I don’t blame you guys for not liking licorice as I don’t like it myself however I will eat the bullets, as for the Rocky Road in my opinion Darrell Lea makes the best by far. In case you did not know Darrell Lea was founded in 1927 by Harry Lea. After 85 years under the ownership and control of the Lea family, the company went into voluntary administration in 2012 leading to its acquisition, sale and restructuring under new ownership. On 10 July 2012, Darrell Lea was placed into voluntary administration due to a review of the business by its directors who had concerns about Darrell Lea's ability to meet its ongoing financial obligations. The company was reported to be losing $200,000 a week, and half of its company-run stores were closed immediately, with the loss of nearly 200 jobs. On 3 September 2012, the company was acquired by the Queensland owners of VIP Petfoods, the Quinn family. The business was further restructured, with the loss of 172 casual and 246 permanent jobs, leaving only 83 Darrell Lea employees. The last company-owned stores were closed by end of business on 9 September 2012. The Quinns turned the business around after injecting about $30 million into it and building a second factory in Ingleburn. More than 500 products were cut from the product line which halved annual revenue, but stopped the ongoing losses. Darrell Lea products continued to be sold through its licensed retailer network which was expanded into IGA, Coles and Woolworths. In January 2018, Quadrant Private Equity purchased Darrell Lea from the Quinn family for about $200 million. Tony and Christina Quinn retained a significant stake in the company.

Perth is too far south for it to be tropical. It’s about the same latitude as Sydney, and of course on the coast. The weather is not as notorious as Melbourne. Winter temps probably around 10-19 Celcius, summer 28-40C. Western Australia does have the hottest place in Australia, Marble Bar, with temps exceeding 50C.

With the chocolate covered liquorice, the chocolate needs to melt in the mouth first, then the liquorice adds a nice contrast to the sweetness and texture. Same with the chocolate soft centres, having the soft centres seep through the chocolate is the experience that adds the flavour. You lose the "flavour hit" by biting into them and combining the flavours at the same time. I think it's could also be that the chocolate coats the palate before the liquorice is exposed.

I’m a truck driver and we Transport Darrell Lee product all over Australia. When you walk into the warehouse at Ingleburn, all you can smell is the Licorice.
True, you should suck on the minty choc balls first because that gives the chocolate centers enough time to melt and then you can bite them easier. Same for the jaffas (orange chocolate balls)
I agree, most of the lollies needs to "melt" in the mouth to get the full flavour experience. I cringed with the way they were biting into like they did

@IWrocker , Darrell Lea is probably the pre eminent liquorice company in Aus, with the allsorts as kids we'd separate the layers and eat them individually , me folks used to run 1 of their franchises too and there were 100's of standard products and then specialty products came in for easter and christmas on top of the normal range, but it was a lot of work due to having to have so many wrapped at christmass and so many tied bows on products too.
I know they went through a rough patch & got sold to private equity, but I wish they could bring back some of the older products again in limited runs here and there.
@@MonstaAU ahhh i haven't lived in aus for 16 years, me folks owned the franchise 30 years ago, I liked their peanut brittle and brazil nut brittle, their chocolate coated liquorice logs, and the rocky road. i have found their soft liquorice occasionally in some of the UK supermarkets, on and off over the years in UK but never consistantly unfortunately.

Licorice is a common flavour in Australia. When I was young, my favourite was a Choo Choo; a hard licorice toffee style, which you would just suck it. Anise is a flavour you require to acquire a taste for.
Fun Fact regarding the ANZAC Biscuit. The name is protected by Law in Oz and Newzealand. To sell commercially branded "ANZAC Biscuits", the biscuits (not cookies) must be made to the officially recognised recipe. No choc chip, raisins etc can be included. I am not a fan of licorice either. When I was a little kid I would separate the licorice out of the allsort and only eat the coloured bits...lolz
Funny, I pulled them apart and only ate the liquorice
Lol
Licorice is fairly popular here, but I can understand how people dislike it.
The size of the Vegemite jar is what makes it exclusive, not the product itself.
Perth has the same climate as Adelaide and Sydney - Temperate.
Hahahaha…. No way he’s a rabbits fan… get rid of that as fast as you can…
LETS GO ROOSTERS, LETS GO……
I love seeing Pedro, he's a character!
We have grown up with choc covered liquorice, which is also popular in the UK...you have to keep trying them.
I know that Americans have grown up with red vines which are not popular here.
If you would like to know some aspects of oz history therecis a pretty good movie called the proposal. Set around 1855 1860 by the looks. Jaffas were made for rolling down the wooden floors of movie theatres, or picture shows as called here
Each to there own I love black licorice and with chocolate is the bomb.. I guess it what your use too. 🙂🇦🇺
Pedro was ruthless against that adorable kangaroo snack.....no mercy.
Someone get him a see you in the N.T.shirt....that will be hilarious.
Also its 13c in Perth right now at 8:30pm
I’m a truck driver and we Transport Darrell Lee product all over Australia. When you walk into the warehouse at Ingleburn, all you can smell is the Licorice.
You’re gonna love those Red Rock sweet chilli & sour cream chips, they’re the best 🤤
Pedro looks like he just came out of the saloon ,a gun slinging sheriff ,the Chikito is yummy
sitting here eating Darrell Lea strwberry licorice twists as I watch this video - how ironic
Niceeee
True, you should suck on the minty choc balls first because that gives the chocolate centers enough time to melt and then you can bite them easier. Same for the jaffas (orange chocolate balls)
Chef from South Park has entered the conversation
I agree, most of the lollies needs to "melt" in the mouth to get the full flavour experience. I cringed with the way they were biting into like they did
Just had a solid chuckle at getting a Timtams advert as you were unboxing Timtams
Chocolate bullets are One my favourites. Rocky road is the bomb! You do know liquorice is a natural laxative. 😜
That red Mexican blanket ... highly jealous
As with all rockabillies and kustom car nuts. Very pretty to look at.
Yes, it's so beautiful.
Weather….. oh my. On Christmas Eve in Perth it was 43, Christmas 44, Boxing Day 42, next day 40 or 41. Celsius.
It’s pretty timely that you got a Galah (pronounced Guh-LAH) and Kookaburra in this week’s mail, as the Guardian Australia is currently running its annual Australian Bird of the Year poll - with new voting rules after some suspicious owl bot activity in last year’s vote 😝
I’m pulling for the bin chicken too finally win! Gotten so close a few years in a row, pipped at the finish line by bots. Any animal that able to survive and thrive, even after we destroyed their habitat definitely deserves a win!
@@katherinemorelle7115 sadly the bin chicken was cut yesterday! I’m pulling for the pink robin because it’s a floof, but if the tawny frogmouth finally get the top slot this year, I won’t be mad at it 😉
@IWrocker , Darrell Lea is probably the pre eminent liquorice company in Aus, with the allsorts as kids we'd separate the layers and eat them individually , me folks used to run 1 of their franchises too and there were 100's of standard products and then specialty products came in for easter and christmas on top of the normal range, but it was a lot of work due to having to have so many wrapped at christmass and so many tied bows on products too.
A little bit of history rocky road was invented by Darrell Lea named after rocky point road because the original Darrell Lea factory was on this road
I'm from Australia and your videos make my day lately guys.keep it up mate.
don't nibble them ,put the whole thing in
On the map find Mandurah, South of Perth then look inland you may see Pinjarra. This is in Western Australia.💖🇦🇺
Perth was cold 2 months ago. We are really at the start of Summer now.
I would like to see your pantry. Especially your store of Tim Tams.
we have Cheetos over here, but they are cheese and bacon balls (and now puffs)
Chocolate and licorice is a match made in heaven, in my opinion. Then again mint and chocolate is a perfect match too. Haha
I think it's interesting to find an American who has dedicated so much of their account to finding out more about Australian culture. I also really enjoy your videos because when you state your opinions you're not rude in any way. So many Americans make fun of us and our accent and call us weird for the way we do things, but I've noticed you take the time to listen to us and understand the slang and that honestly means alot. I also think you would like Australian TV. Here are some shows I can suggest for you to watch.
Wentworth
Doctor Doctor (it's called 'The Heart Guy' in the U.S)
Offspring
To name a few 😊
You have to try the Raspberry twists coated in the milk choc. They are the ultimate!!
That cap is priceless up the bunnies "South Sydney Rabbitohs" been around since 1904.👍
That first Twisty Ian took out was by far the biggest one I’ve ever seen in my life
They are pretty good. I was living in Australia for 10 years before I discovered. Had to go across country to Melbourne as didn't have on west coast.
Also digging the night rider music at the end 👍
Australia... The Millennium Falcon of country's!!
And trust me... Perth is NOTHING like Chicago!!
I find myself watching these videos more than once.
If you're still doing tastings come easter expect a lot of packages with darrel lea rocklea road eggs. They're about 10cm long half eggs made of milk chocolate and filled with all the rocklea road bits until they're overflowing the half egg. They're to die for.
Wow! I’m really interested, and being from Zimbabwe I don’t get to experience these foods. By the way I love your channel!!
The liquorice allsorts we'd peel of each layer off as kids ..and as an adult shhhhh lol. Not all with coconut I've never heard of that actually. Black liquorice must be and Aussie thing as I've noticed alot of Americans don't like it or never had it. So glad you love out Darrell lea stuff. As a kid it was a little boutique shop and was so special to go to. Wed get the little bo peep bottle and stretch it out as long as we could lol. All their stuff is still amazing. Enjoy IWROCKER family xo
Hi Ian.. they used to sell mango, apple, blackcurrant darrel lea licorice too. havent seen them since they changed their product distribution methods though
The apple flavour was so great, i miss it
Licorice is a common flavour in Australia.
The Department of Veteran Affairs will action any violations.
Hi Ian and family. The NRL cap sent to you is South Sydney Rabbitohs.Co-owned by Russell Crowe.I love this team.Followed them my whole 60 years.Unfortunately we lost this years grand final.Still forever love them.
Really enjoyed that. Loved that you tried a few things as you opened them. Twisties in a buttered roll is so good. And thumbs up for your honesty. Nobody likes everything. 👍
A must do is soft black darrell lea licorice dipped in nutella. Was my go to after school snack (since you guys don't really like black licorice, can do it with strawberry or raspberry to good effect, Just gotta be soft licorice)
How have I never tried that?!!! 😃
@@gamesetmatt23 I don't know! But now you must, and please report back ♥
You have just added a huge game changer to my list of amazing snacks to have when I get the munchies. Its Soo good thank you for sharing this
@@aussiepotatis4441 Oh you are sooooo welcome!
Darel lee licorice is good but if u dont like black licorice you wont like it lol
My favourite is the raspberry white choc bullets followed by the black liquorice milk chocolate bullets.
Hey Ian, love all your content, Perth Weather is similar to California, say San Francisco or San Jose, a Mediterranean climate.
