I'm just gonna say it: this is my favorite adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk. I didn't see it in my childhood, so I have no nostalgic attachment to it and I still think it's the best adaptation of the story I've ever seen.

Oh God, memories! This is one trippy film! There is a sinister darkness to this one- Madam Hecuba will always remain one of the greatest movie villains to me, despite the fact most people don't know of her! Still can't work out what's going on with her and those cogs.

I cannot believe I found this! I have been hunting for this animation for 15 maybe even 20 years . I last saw this as a child when I was 6 or 7 so you can imagine my memory was a bit fuzzy. I just had the vague recollection of a girl with hair that comes to a point on her head floating on clouds and the witch that was controlling her. I also knew it was Japanese but I completely forgot that this was Jack and The Beanstalk story! I am just so giddy with happiness right now. I have to find this on DVD!

I'm 33. In the early 80's, my mother rented this for me from the library. It was on either VHS or beta. It scared me as a child. Just so surreal. Those paper wedding guests-especially the priest-really scared me, even more than the witch and the giant. Don't know what made me look this up, but I actually watched the whole thing. What a trip.

I saw this film in Russia when I was a very young child. I didn't think a whole lot of it back then although I dug it, but it certainly planted a strong seed in me. I remember later once I moved to the states, I found a copy of Dark Side Of The Moon in my house. The moment Breathe started, I had a vision of castles in the clouds and swore that I had heard the music before. Now that I've found this I see that it's not the same, but I think this film played a big part in my love for psychedelic and progressive music.

  • @AvengerII
    @AvengerII 10 лет назад +4

Most people that know about this film in the US probably saw it on HBO in the early 1980s.
There are a number of well-known (in the dub industry) early anime dub voices in the English version: Billie Lou Watt, the ORIGINAL Astro Boy is the voice of Jack; Corrine Orr, best known as Speed Racer's girlfriend, Trixie, is Princess Margaret; and Jack Grimes, who played Chim-Chim and Sparky in Speed Racer, is the voice of the Giant!
The home video releases of this film have been spotty in the States; never received a good, widespread release. The DVD release had to be ordered online... you could not find it in stores for the most part. The VHS and American DVD releases are out-of-print now.
There were reported issues with the last home video (DVD) release in the States. The English audio was supposedly out-of-sync and noticeably 2-3 frames behind the animation.
Wish I had still broken down and bought it when it was available on DVD in the US! (I am NOT going to spend $80 on a copy of this film now... NOT WORTH IT, Amazon.com!) It's still likely it will get a license-rescue sometime in the near future. It happens! This film and a number of others are overdue for license-rescues.
I've recently seen a number of anime features from the 1970s and 1980s and they don't come off badly against what was being released from the US and Europe at the time, either... Some of these films had the money well-spent on the story and animation. These were early starts for producers and directors who later worked at the best Japanese animation studios including Studio Ghibli and TMS. Castle of Cagliostro and The Last Unicorn were among the Ghibli forerunners and are films that have definitely withstood the test of time...

I stumbled upon this video whilst looking for the "Jack the Giant Slayer movie", the one that came out last year. And I must say, while watching both, the adaptation seems to water itself down in comparison to this one. I know most people might be tired of hearing us saying "we can appreciate antique art as much as we can appreciate our own", but I just have to say- this has got to be one of the most straightforward and eerie animated films I've ever seen. Kudos to the person who uploaded this and to all the people who gave information about it in the comments. :D

This film was first released in Japan in 1974, but it was released in the US two years later in February 1976. The film you see here is the Columbia version from 1976 with an English dub. I remember seeing this as a kid when my parents used to have this VHS tape which was dubbed from a VCR since my uncle used to record them back in the 1980's along with the "Scooby & Scrappy-Doo" episodes on VHS and others. I lost the tape so many years ago, but it's great to see it once again.

I was student in Moscow when firstly saw this film and loved it for all my life. Especially music is wonderfull. From that time I loved Japan and West. Evil kingdom remained me the stagnat and falsehood of USSR rejime, where all soviet peoples lived under the control of old governors and KGB. The idea and exellent performing of old fairy-tale recieved by me as a one of the astonishing achivement and power of West..
So now Kyrgyzstan is a strategic partner of Japan and even my wife reminded the prinsess of Margaret and all my enemies looked as madam Hecuba and her son and papers ghosts-servants.

      traitor of every country detected
do you protect a culture? Do you enhance it? People, it's bearers?
[there is no point of using "enemy". Enhance, fix, keep peace/a_life]

I watched this movie back in kindergarten back in 1980. Our whole class watched in the school library, through movie projector instead of VHS.

i was introduced to this a few years ago and saw it as a junk knockoff film. i ended up loving it and only now know that it was the original. i can see why i was drawn back to looking for it
