The fixing looks doable until he started scraping the chips off and then soldering the smaller yellow chip. Was there a part where he diagnose the issues before doing it and then tested again prior to putting everything back together? I seen videos where they use multi-meters to test.
Usually it’s not the capacitors, it’s more or likely the RSX (the GPU). They were known for their insane power consumption and heat output. The 90 nm variants (the ones found in the launch models) had the most issues. When they started decreasing the size, this decreased power consumption and made them a lot cooler temperature wise. at 14:40 if you play the video at .25 speed you can see that little plastic clip inside the colling system that you had no idea where it goes. why the heck is there plastic inside of a cooler
Why is it always a capacitor? I gotta say, watching these kinds of videos inspire me to know at least the basics of everything. It would save me so much money.
Because of heat dissipation the capactiors overheat and with time they will fail and thats what causes ylod most of the times.Cpu nor capacitor are the cause of ylod very rarely the gpu itself
Manufacturing deficiencies in the 95nm process GPUs cause power draw issues after a number of heat/cool cycles. The core issue can be temporarily fixed by the cap replacement but will not last. Even when syscon is reporting capacitor errors, you have to take a step back and understand what killed the caps.
Why did you go straight to changing the NEC token capacitors? You should use the correct tools and check the syscon error log for the exact cause. What you did here is most likely only temporary.
I seen someone say it plays PS2 games. It also plays PS1 as well. Those are still very much wanted PS3's. Also the yellow things/orange things you used to replace what exactly is that? I am actually getting into working on systems and any information helps. Thanks
I wonder if the heat you applied to the board when replacing the capacitors was enough to reflow to get it to turn on and it seemed like it was the capacitors that fixed the issue. Also, why not delid the CPU/GPU chips and replace the dried up thermal paste underneath? Seems like you went through a lot of trouble to skip the most important step in restoring these?
Great restoration, I love your videos. Would it be fair to say that most of the dust gets into these Playstations and XBoxes because they have these monster fans that suck in liters of air every minute? When you look at where the dust has accumulated, you can clearly see the air flows through the whole console.
Thank you for the kind words! You're absolutely right. The powerful fans in PlayStations and Xboxes do indeed draw in a lot of air, which unfortunately brings in dust and debris as well. This dust tends to accumulate in areas with high airflow, like around the fans and vents, which can affect the console's performance over time. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help keep your console running smoothly. Thanks for watching and sharing your insights!
Lol, those NEC/Tokin caps on the PS3s almost never go bad, so replacing them with zero actual diagnostics to "fix" YLOD is a total fad if you follow the latest developments in the PS3 repair community. This "repair" will not last. In the vast majority of cases YLOD is caused by a dead GPU and the only real way to fix it is by replacing the GPU (now there are ways to use the newer versions, but it is far from trivial).
Look at the likes and dislikes on this video and you will see.. Luckily people understand nowadays, that the easy fixes are not the problem, often. Just remember the times everyone was using a hairdryer for ps3s and the oven for graphixcards fixes. People are finally learning.
you can ask an immodest question. How is the chip dump related to the replacement of the processor power harness? After all, it is known for certain that the screen of death on the console is associated with the video chip dump due to overheating. and how did you find out that it was the power harness that was faulty if you did not perform any diagnostics using an oscilloscope or a tester?
That PS3 is a backwards compatible model, which can run from PS1, PS2 to PS3 Discs, which other PlayStation 3's can only play PS1 and this one is an extremely rare model. Take very good care of it!
Fun fact: your info is incorrect, YLOD is a general hardware failure and he should have diagnosed it properly by soldering wires on the syscon RXD and TXD pins and using a UART, if the error code produced by said chip ends with "1002", it indeed is the power going to the RSX not being correct which means the NEC Tokin tantalum caps are the culprit, if the error produced is anything else, like a 3034 which indicates a dead RSX chip, then yes, it isn't the culprit. If the issue is a 3034 then your only solution basically is to get a new chip.

I would love to have my PlayStation3 repaired as well.
It has the same symptoms as the video.
Check out R.I.P. Felix. Get some real information and answers.
Hey love to watch your videos super satisfying. I have a PS2 that won't start should I open it up and try to fix it or send it to get it repaired. I live in florida. Don't know much old console repair shops.
It’s rather easy it may just need a ribbon that runs for $7 and easy to install, or it needs a power supply. Perhaps just dirty. Mine did the same took 20 minutes to fix good luck 🤞
What in gods name, that's a pretty nuclear way to go about fixing this.
Nice work! Was it necessary also to replace a new cmos 3.3v battery?
at 14:40 if you play the video at .25 speed you can see that little plastic clip inside the colling system that you had no idea where it goes. why the heck is there plastic inside of a cooler
It's not. He just assumed it is.
Why did you go straight to changing the NEC token capacitors? You should use the correct tools and check the syscon error log for the exact cause. What you did here is most likely only temporary.
Which capacitors did you replace the NEC ones with?
Thank you for the tutorial!
I seen someone say it plays PS2 games. It also plays PS1 as well. Those are still very much wanted PS3's.
Also the yellow things/orange things you used to replace what exactly is that?
I am actually getting into working on systems and any information helps. Thanks
This is awesome 🤩
21:00 what game
Blur
Blur, I think
Blur a really, really good game!
What a controller....
I would like that you give an explanation about that orange or yellow light. Mine is dead since long time 😢
You know, that thing can play PS2 games as well it's an early backwards compatible model
Thank you for giving me this information! Have a great day.
Thanks for watching and sharing your insights!
this is what dkoldies is supposed to do
What do you use to get out the scratches out?
Nothing , he replaced them with fake ones
Oh God that's not the correct way to apply thermal paste 😢 16:58
Bro, I missed giving a whim to the thermal paste. Missing the upper parts
You don't need to spread the thermal paste. It will spread once you put the cover on it.
Many thanks for the tip.
Some people spread some not. He did not put too much so his way is good as well...
you can ask an immodest question. How is the chip dump related to the replacement of the processor power harness? After all, it is known for certain that the screen of death on the console is associated with the video chip dump due to overheating. and how did you find out that it was the power harness that was faulty if you did not perform any diagnostics using an oscilloscope or a tester?
That was amazing! Also are you playing a ps3 with Xbox 360 controller lmao
It is not an Xbox 360 controller it is a Rapoo V600 Ergonomic Vibration Shock Controller Gamepad for PC, PS3, and XBOX360, thanks for the visit
Is this a permanent fix
That PS3 is a backwards compatible model, which can run from PS1, PS2 to PS3 Discs, which other PlayStation 3's can only play PS1 and this one is an extremely rare model. Take very good care of it!

10:09 How many degrees did you use the heat gun?
I think enough to accidentaly "reflow" cell and rsx solderballs by doing this. So in that short time he did that it probably was 450-600'c...
Fun Fact: The NEC/TOKINs aren't the culprit of the issue, and it gets fixed by the heat applied near the chipset
Looks like you were testing the console with an Xbox 360 controller ??
Looks like a dk oldies refurbished console
good restore👍👍
Thanks 👍for the kind words! Thanks, buddy! Have a great day.
09:48 oh god 😩
Why didn't you remove the factory thermal paste, using a new one from the MasterGel Maker cooler?
You applied the thermal paste very badly and carelessly.
I’m pretty sure it’s suppose to mimic thermal pads
He used shitty chinese thermal shit
Then make a video on how to do it correctly….
That wasn't thermal paste. It was flux that you use when soldering. It cleans up as you go along.

I also got a ylod once. I hit it once and it works ever since
Slap it back to functioning, I like it. Brute force method.
whats the name of the game in the last minute ? its amazing beacause don't make nothing of noise the ps3
Fun Fact: The PS3's wording uses the same Mata font that was used for Sam Rami's Spider-Man trilogy.
Got a PS3T where I’ve dropped the console and cracked the corner of the case against a coffee table. Thankfully it’s repairable but the lower part of the case will need replacing.

Agreed. And quite ugly. Imagine going at a circuit board with a fucking screwdriver! Never! And then a grinder? WTF? Good thing this guy has broken stuff, cause I certainly wouldn't let him touch anything thats working.
