What would you say to someone who claims Pope Gregory the great prescripting purgatory is analogous to Joseph Smith inventing the canon of his own golden plates?

@@josh39684 Just sad I actually was involved with homeschooling circles and met the family.
What is sad about people like Allen Parr is that they don’t have a public dialogue with other Catholics to discuss these issues. Instead, they stay in their echo chamber and beat up a strawman.
Unfortunately for people like Allen they make a living off stuff like this in so much there's no way they could afford to come out and admit spreading false doctrine. We all live in a echo chamber but I will never understand how people who claim to love Christ Jesus could attack thr oldest church who established the new testament, have traditions all the way down to the time of Jesus. It's madness to me
@@humbirdms2784 Parr sounds so ignorant of basic Christianity. Its embarrassing.
Of course Parr doesn't, he just shows ignorance of all the basic creed whenever talking about the Catholic Church, so sad to see him spreading lies about our faith

1. Do what? "This"
2. What's "this"? Eating the bread and drinking the wine.
3. What does Jesus say the bread and the wine are? "His body and His blood"
So simple, i can't see how protestants not only go of course with the understanding, but how they would not admit to “following the many disciples” that walked away from Jesus when they could not agree with the literal understanding. Pride, perhaps.
@@siddywiddyb It's because before "Sola Scriptura" or "Sola Fide", it's "Catholicism is wrong".

Coming from a southern Baptist background, I had no knowledge of "church history." Then I started to wonder what was the first church like? What was first apostle's church like? What was it like to seat with Jesus and listening to his teachings? I did not know Jesus in the southern Baptist church. This lead me to the Catholic Church and church history. I hope to join the true church one day.

Allen Parr said the early Church didn't teach transubstantiation.
Tell me you haven't read early Christian writings (i.e., Church Fathers) without telling me you haven't read early Christian writings.
There were four views of the Eucharist in the early church. In his magnum opus, History of the Christian Church, historian Philip Schaff (Philip Schaff, History of the Christian Church, Volume 2, [Hendrickson Publishers, 2010], pp. 241-245; Philip Schaff, History of the Christian Church, Volume 3, [Hendrickson Publishers, 2010], pp. 494-500) documents the four views the early church held in regards to the way in which Christ was associated with the bread and wine. You had the
(1) mystical view of Ignatius, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus and Cyril of Jerusalem which said the body and blood of Jesus are mystically in union with the elements leading to a sort of repetition of the incarnation, though no change in substance actually takes place as in later Romanism;
(2) the symbolic view of Tertullian, Cyprian, Eusebius, Gregory Nazianzen, Macarius the Elder, Theodoret, Augustine and Gelasius which said the Eucharist symbolizes the body and blood of Jesus and is a commemoration, not Rome’s literalistic transubstantiation;
(3) the allegorical or spiritual view of Clement of Alexandria, Origen and Athanasius which said the believer receives the spiritual but not physical blood and life of Jesus at Mass; and
(4) the literalistic view of Hilary, Ambrose and Gaudentius which affirmed the bread and wine as being the literal transformed body and blood of Jesus which is basically in line with the modern Roman Catholic system. The Roman view is in the minority, while the symbolic and mystical views seem to be the most primitive and popular.”
@@Justas399 You can also find it in the writings to Emperor Marcus Aurelius regarding the early church and eating of the flesh of Jesus. Early Romans called Christ believers in the Eucharist cannibals but the letter to Marcus explained, they don't eat people, they eat the living Jesus spiritually that has transformed into living bread.
@@davidestate You are not getting that doctrine from exegeting the Scriptures.
This is clearly secondary protestant source claiming this kind of nonsense.
This is all great information but let’s not forget all the early church fathers disagreed on seperate issues but the important thing to remember is What the church teaches.
The portion on assurance of salvation is 100% accurate. In my life as a protestant, which is the vast majority of my life, I had constant fears along the lines of "what if my conversion wasn't genuine?", especially as I sinned. When converting to Catholicism this past winter (confirmed at Easter Vigil), I was often asked "how will you have assurance of your salvation, how will you have peace?". Since crossing the Tiber, I have never felt more assurance of my state with God than following confession. Hearing the words of the priest in persona Christi, "Your sins are forgiven, go in peace" is the assurance I had always been lacking in the protestant world.
God bless you, brother. I'm also a convert from this past Easter. I was an atheist before, but God gave me the grace to see how wrong I was.
@@lumberzach77 likewise, peace be with you. Pray for me, I'll pray for you
This is my same experience converting to orthodoxy, instead of always worrying whether or not I was “truly” saved, the only thing I worry about now is if I have broken God’s heart. A Protestant objection is how we’ve made Christ as a “fearful judge”, but I was never more scared of God than when I was a Protestant. No assurance of true salvation, especially when I sinned and walked away from God. Since finding the truth I am no longer ruled by a fear of Hell or not being truly saved. Once saved always saved is a recipe for paranoia. Knowing that though I fall I have God as my Father welcoming back His prodigal is so much more assuring.
Also confirmed at this past Easter with the same experience!
Did you watch Trent's video "Protestantism's Not So Simple Plan for Salvation"? I saw that last Summer when I first learned about Catholicism and it resonated with me fully
I can relate to this, back when I struggled with Masturbation it felt as if I was somehow never enough, that I was doomed to succumb to my flesh. If It weren't for confession, my scruples would have led to me renouncing the faith entirely. It felt so peaceful, knowing that even after failing uncountable times, that I could always find a guaranteed assurance, even If that state of grace didn't last long. It was as if I had the ability to restart my life again, with a fresh new beginning, every week.
I was banned from a 'Christian' discord server for posting this video in reply to someone posting Allen's original. Keep up your great ministry, Trent!
Yes!! My comment on Allan Pars page was removed because they didn't like what I said about his erroneous assumptions.
Keep fighting the good fight. The world will hate you because they hated the savior first.
Yeah you attacked his monetary base of followers so they will always block your comments. They don’t want you to erode their base of followers
That’s rough. Shows quite a bit of insecurity that they need to ban anyone who would dare suggest anything different from group think.
Interesting, I was also banned from a Christian discord server - which one were you a part of?
As a Protestant, I can safely say that it is a good idea to ignore Allen Parr a good majority of the time. 🤷 And also, thanks to my Catholic brethren for standing so doctrinally strong on the Incarnation. I ❤️ you forever for that. 👑
My wife and I have been on a search for a new church. The modern church continues to move closer to closer to culture and further and further away from the gospels.
We want authenticity and tradition, and I’m thankful for these resources when it comes to learning about Catholic teachings.
even in Catholicism, its tricky today, find a conservative Catholic chruch...
I've been there last year when I was seeking which church is truer.
All I can suggest you is that you seek truth itself and not just a good preacher. Of course I truly believe fullness of Christian truth is only within the Catholic Church, but it's your choice in the end.
My suggestion is that you also try an Eastern Catholic church if you got one nearby.
@@glennlanham6309 What you're saying isn't true because there's only one Catholic Church and only one doctrine. If people say things contrary to doctrine, it's the people who are the problem, not the doctrine. Whereas with Protestants, doctrine is the problem.

As I am protestant, I'm usually an affiliate with the Gavin Ortlund Mafia, but I did really like the points you made here. This guy is on the same level as Ray Comfort and Mike Gendron. He has no interest in a dialogue with any Catholic apologist. He doesn't want to explore truth. He wants to feel good about his spirituality. Really old, tired arguments that are easily refuted.
They need to justify their belief by trying to knock down Catholicism.
No matter how emphatically people deny the church their conscience troubles them, deep down they know better.
No, no one is as bad as Mike Gendron. He might be as bad as Ray Comfort.
@@MeanBeanComedy I saw a video of a Lutheran pastor defending infant baptism against Mike Gendron and you could tell how appalled he was at Mike’s out of control hubris. Mike actually said “anyone who defends infant baptism clearly hasn’t thought about it very deeply” it was so ridiculous that it still makes me laugh. The pastor replied with “sooo people like Martin Luther didn’t think about this very deeply.” It was golden.
"Assurance of Salvation" is emblematic of this hubris. "I want to be saved, but I don't want a real relationship with God, just a Divine sugardaddy."💔
Makes me sad. Trent and Jimmy are some of my favorite Christian apologists (period) and I'm a protestant. To not have dialogue and glean insight from such great minds is a terrible disservice.
I’ve always found it interesting how some Protestants go after Catholic beliefs and teachings. Yet never attack Orthodox views who have like 90% of the same views as us… (saints, Theotokos, etc)
Most don't know the Orthodox exist.
All they know is Catholics, other Protestants, and Jewish. Tell them about the Orthodox and their brain will short circuit!
It's a american protestant thing to go after catholics. And because they're americans, they don't even know what orthodoxy is. I live in Switzerland and catholics and protestant go hand in hand with each other. you often have pastor preaching in catholic churches or catholic priest preaching in protestant churches... or holding together a mass. But here in Switzerland the protestant or more or less "homogen"... here you have the "protestant church" and not 1000 variations of protestant churches.
Not surprising. The Catholic Church is by far the biggest denomination in the world. So it’s the big bad boogeyman

I’m so saddened by Allen now I couldn’t finish the video. I used to listen to him when I was Protestant and never felt his arguments against Catholicism made sense. It also breaks my heart that so many believe Catholics are not Christian’s. It seems really disingenuous of him to not investigate the teachings of the Eucharist. I discovered that without this belief, one would not even be considered a Christian back before 100 AD. I was shocked to find out what St Ignatius and others who learned from the disciples taught. It blows my mind how early church history is not being taught. At the very least, he should study history first. I’m so happy to leave Protestantism behind. His comparison of Catholics praying to saints, as necromancy just proves how sola scriptura is wrong. These people believe they get to interpret all the scriptures however they want to 😢
Amen welcome home! I pray you will discover all of the rich treasures of God's true and holy church
Thank you Trent for pointing out the many blind spots in Protestantism. It’s a little wild that while you’re explaining Catholic teaching and correcting Parr’s misunderstandings, you also have to correct his own views of Protestantism! Thanks for your good and careful work brother.
I hope Trent would do a Free for All Friday where he discusses how he researches, because he is so good at supporting his arguments with sources
I love how he quotes protestants to put them up against other protestants. They both go by sola scriptura and both claim to interpret the scriptures with the Holy Spirit yet contradict each other. Who do we listen to?
It's as if he is showing the protestants that 1. another protestant refutes their position, 2. the division in protestantism and 3. no authority to say who is right or wrong in protestantism.
I hope he makes a video using the gospels to support his claims.

I don't understand why Protestants in the US are attacking Catholics, even though both believe in Jesus. In Asia, all Christians stand together and never badmouth one another despite being assaulted by non-Christians, especially Muslims. The attack on us is even more severe than we are called infidels and whatnot. Some Muslim Friday sermons are about Christians and talk through a loudspeaker.
Thanks for this video. I am a proud Catholic.

First of all this isn't new in The US. In the 1700s, it was illegal to be Catholic a lot of states. The Kl4n was actually a Protestant denomination
Mr Parr does one thing in his video... he says I THINK a lot , so it's all basically "his opinion".
I would like to see him explain away Eucharistic miracles.
He would say they are demonic.
as a Lutheran, it annoys me so much when people like Allen Parr make Protestantism out to be low church, non sacramental, and osas. i would rather go to a Catholic church than a Protestant low church because even though i disagree with Catholics on points about justification (which isn't as grave as a difference as people make it out to be) or the treasury of merit, at least Catholics realize the importance of the sacraments and that we must continue in the faith. and Trent saying that "Only God can get me to heaven but you and I can certainly get ourselves to hell." seems very similar to the Lutheran view which would be that we don't preserve ourselves in the faith, God the Holy Spirit does, but we can also still resist God's grace which is a reality we should acknowledge as possible.
I appreciate your thoughts. I agree, there are certainly meaningful differences between us as Catholics and Lutherans, but you are right about this issue. We as Catholics have to be careful not to say "Protestants believe [X]" as if all Protestants are one and the same, but it is also all too common for some Protestants to say "Catholics are wrong because they believe [X]" and not realize that they are actually denying a common or even majority held belief/practice that other Protestants affirm as well.
The Catholic Church makes things up contrary to the teaching of Jesus. No such thing as mortal sins, intercession of the saints or the infallibility of the Pope. Im Orthodox but It’s so nice getting to cheer on Catholic defenders against protestant attacks.
We will NOT let it slide. As a Catholic apologist, I can't wait for my next challenge I'm FULLY prepared to defend Christ's Church.
I was explaining to my grandmother (non - Catholic) about purgatory. I explained how many Protestant/Evangelical Christians believe struggle with sins or don't have a chance to ask for forgiveness and repent will make it to heaven "smoking" (I was one of those that believed that way before my conversion to a Catholic Christian). This sounds a lot like purgatory and this helped me to accept the belief in purgatory.
Protestant buisiness is threatened by the large scale exodus to ancient Church.
Honestly, as long as a person is following Christ I am happy (Protestant here).
@@banmancan1894
Following the inspired teachings of early Church fathers and martyres, thier inspired tradition is what flourished the early church.
@@banmancan1894how can you be a follower of Jesus and be protestant at the same time??
I did find it quite strange that he showed the correct definition of indulgences but then didn't quote from it and instead said that indulgences pay for sins and not temporal punishments of sin.
Asking a saint to pray for us has nothing to do with communicating with the dead. The Saints do not talk back.
Nah 😂go to jesus directly.
Yeah, talking to the saints is not necromancy. We’re not using any voodoo to talk to them.
@@peterlee6148 I hope you have never asked another person to pray for you, otherwise you're a hypocrite
Asking a saint to pray for us is found no where in the gospels. The Catholic Church made up their own religion and it's not based on the teachings of Christ.
@@FleurPillager I would think that a Christian would understand that eternal life is exactly that .. eternal life. For the righteous is doesn't start after death and it doesn't end after death. Alan mentions necromancy. Asking a saint to pray for us is not necromancy. Necromancy is trying to communicate with the dead. Communication is a two-way conversation. I speak to them and expect them to engage in a conversation with me. Catholics do not engage in that. When we ask a saint to pray for us, just as we ask our friends here... the prayer we ask them to pray for us goes ONE WAY...to God in the name of the Blessed Holy Trinity. Why would we ask saint to pray for us? We usually ask a saint that has experienced what we feel we are experiencing or a saint we have something in common with to pray for us .. We pray to God. Just because we ask a Saint to pray for us doesn't mean we bypass God...but we know our prayers will usually be what we think we need, not what we truly need. The saint will pray for what we need which will bring us closer to Christ.. ..while our friends will pray for what our earthly minds want...
Keep it up!! All holy angels and saints alive in heaven, pray for us! Jesus, I trust in you take care of everything. 🙏🙌🕊

So glad that you are here, Trent. You do great work.
'The Catholics' is a passive aggressive way of speaking.
I spoke with a Presbyterian pastor once and everytime I used the word Catholic, he would correct me and say "Roman Catholic". Very annoying, as If he would honestly call himself Catholic in his day to day life.
@@poesia-com-cafeina Which was ridiculous on his part as "Roman Catholic" is reference to the Roman Rite. You should have asked him what a "Syriac Catholic" was. lol
My listening attention shut down when Parr started talking about how he's assured of salvation and has no restrictions on anything he wants to do. It's not that I was blocking his voice out of prejudice against his view, it's because what he says is so utterly nonsensical that my mind refused to consider it. So I just went with my instinct and didn't rewind. Life is too short for such nonsense.
The sheer ignorance of Catholic teachings shown by Parr here is absolutely embarrassing. Considering you would go through the trouble of making a video about it you would think you should educate yourself about what Catholics actually believe.
how about purification true fire in Purgatory ? First Corinthians - 3 - 13,14,15

Allan Parr is so ignorant of catholicism. At least we get his beliefs right.

Having been on both sides, lay Catholics are just as bad. But it's definitely the case that informed Catholics better represent Protestantism than the other way around

Nothing wrong with being ignorant of pagan Catholicism, provided what you say is true about Alan, but not. But there is something wrong with Catholics being ignorant of Christianity, which they are.

18:00 did he just equate smoking crack to texting while driving? To even suggest those two things in the same sentence is wild.

Yes he did 🤦♂️🤦♂️
It is simply unwise to smoke crack, brother. But, yeah, onto heaven you go lol

I can accept smoking crack, but texting and driving is where I draw the line!
Before I even get started, what's sad about Allen is Frank Turek had Jimmy Akin on recently to talk about misconceptions about Catholicism. However, Allen is now an instructor with Frank's Cross Examined Instructor academy (which I and Cameron Bertuzzi are graduates). I can't for the life of me figure out why you would have a guy like this be an instructor when he is producing this kind of content.
Allen Parr is the Mike Winger of Calvinism.
This.
The NLT “translation” of Ephesians 2:8-9 is probably the most egregious mistranslation of that passage I’ve ever seen.
I think the main problem I have with Parr's arguments is they frequently assert "I don't think... ." He consistently places his own opinions as if it were an authority in of itself, there seems to be a lack of any true humility.
Catholicism makes you yearn for righteousness which to me is better than some protestants saying i can't lose my salvation. there is no assurance whatsoever. At least I know when I do good works, even if it doesn't contribute to my salvation, I know to some extent I know I will be with God when I die. Your faith in Christ should come with love for Christ.
I have always said Catholicism always make so much sense compared to Protestantism.
I want to explain to you why God sees our works: A lot of people claim, "Once saved, always saved." But there is something they completely forget about--the carnal nature. When we are saved, we are not automatically released from our carnal nature. We must crucify it. That's why Jesus says to take up our Cross.
A lot of people say, "Works can't get you into heaven. Only grace!" And they are correct. But grace links me up to the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is active! He wants to work for God! Just because I am linked to the Holy Spirit, that doesn't make me a self-indulgent slob. Just thinking that is blasphemy! Because I am linked with the Holy Spirit, He does His works through me! He wants to serve God, and He does it through me!
Let me share a story with you: There is a doctor trying to work on a patient. But the patient is being wheeled around by a nurse who won't let him stay put in his wheelchair. Every time the doctor tries to get to the patient, the nurse whizzes him away. The Doctor is Jesus. The Nurse is the carnal nature. And the Patient is you and I. The carnal nature always wants to be in control. The carnal nature can be tamed and can even follow rules because it wants the spotlight. It wants to feel self-righteous. But, there's one thing the carnal nature can't do: it can't be reborn. So, the patient has to look at the nurse and scream, "GET OUT! Leave me alone!" and then the doctor can get to work. The patient isn't doing a good work when he tells the nurse, "Get out!" On the contrary, he is NOT doing what the carnal nature wants.
Wouldn't it be better if the patient was connected to life support, the Holy Spirit, and the doctor can work freely? It would be far better if the patient was critical and supported by the Holy Spirit's life support, then if he was being wheeled around by the carnal nature.
I like to imagine purgatory like someone picking crops. Some of the crops are not salvageable and are thrown out. The ones that are in good condition may be dirty or have other small impurities that need to be cleansed by the farmer.
Purgatory does literally come from a verb meaning to scrub
Where is purgatory explained by Jesus in the gospels? Oh yeah, it's not mentioned.

Excellent video, Trent. I have recently returned to the Catholic faith, and I am currently reading your book, "The Case for Catholicism," which I am enjoying. As an Eastern Orthodox priest, I want to thank the Roman Catholics for taking the brunt of the Protestant/Evangelical criticism over these issues. 🙂
New set looks great, Trent. Excellent video!
Calvinism has been addressed long ago by Saint Francis de Sales, who used to live in Geneva. Unsurprisingly, no Calvinists at the time were willing to have a disputation with him in public, so he had to write a very long letter instead addressing the Calvinist sect. It has been edited and published in book format in recent times by the English title, "The Catholic Controversy".
Probably because they were in danger of being un alive d by the Catholic Church. They literally burned people for publishing the Bible, reading it and questioning the teachings of the the church.
I’m so glad I’m not Protestant anymore. I’ve been catholic since 2022.
If the Bread and wine is just a " symboL"
Why would this symbol can condemned you if ...
1 Corinthians 11,27-29
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord.
28. A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup.
29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.
“This verse is clear that immediately after death people will be judged based on how they lived their lives.”

🧐
😂 Yup.
Protestants still bring up old arguments that have been answered for years now 😂
You mean for centuries.. 😅
“Righteous” has a quantifiable definition. Three stages of the interior life explains it clearly. It’s not subjective.
Protestants are mistaken thinking the dead in Christ are cut off, the Communion of Saints is actually based on Scripture with Paul's teaching, as in Romans 12:4-13 and 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, that in Christ Christians form a single body.
I love the new thumbnail graphic and the studio setup. It's absolutely wonderful. Keep up the good work Sir. May the Almighty God continue to bless and guide you.
As an Anglican, I love the charity displayed by Trent. I would have expected Parr to seek dialogue with seasoned apologists before posting the video. Trent speaks with such clarity. In our Euchariistic Prayers, we say ''grant us therefore Gracious Lord to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ...''
Good job, Trent. Documented, Compelling, Repectful and Charitable. Thank God for your talent and your work.

He would probably say that any righteousness we have as Christians is "imputed" righteousness, given as a gift from Christ. I think, however, that this is a very narrow view of what it means to be righteous.

Protestant Conundrum: when they want to learn about the cstholic church, they go an read books on the church by protestants authors!!! Who "learned" from other protestants before them!!
This Protestant preacher needs to read Jn 6 with respect to transubstantiation. It is very clear He is speaking literally not symbolically. Those who do not believe in the Real Presence need to ask themselves if they want to be like the disciples that walked away from Jesus never to return in Jn 6:66 or do they want to be like St. Peter and the Apostles when St. Peter replied to Jesus saying, “ to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
A discussion with Allen Par about this would be awesome and benefit the body of Christ. Would love to see that.
