Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu Demonstration by Amano Shizuo sensei his students during the 2017 Meiji Jingu Reisai Kobudo Demonstration, at the Meiji Jingu Shrine.
    Representative: Kondo Katsuyuki
Video presented in collaboration with the organizer, the Nihon Kobudo Shinkokai: kobushin.jp
-- Official presentation by the Kobudo association --
The Daito Ryu was openly taught for the first time at the end of the 19th century by Takeda Sokaku, however, the origin of this art dates back much further, probably about 900 years, originating with Minamoto Yoshimitsu. One of the key points in Daitoryu and the principle of "Aiki" is to render the opponents attack powerless in an instant and to win without fighting.
The leader of this organization is Kondo Masayuki, sucessor of Kondo Katsuyuki.
The Daito Ryu is famous for being one of the main base of Morihei Ueshiba's Aikido.

Daito Ryu, criticized by MMA combat sports enthusiasts, is the empty hand art of the palace guards. Visitors had to disarm to enter the palace court thus any enemy would have to overpower the armed guard to acquire weapons to attack the court. Thus Daito Ryu responses are tailored for weapon retention, responses to very strong grabs and holds which would be employed to prevent a guard from drawing his blade while other enemy would disarm the guard. Thus all grabs and holds are done w/a death grip during training, under the idea the defender is armed w/wakazashi sword and tanto dagger and if he's not held w/total strength he'll deploy a weapon to cut down the attacker. This is why many Daito Ryu responses are to wrist and arm grabs, as well as bear hugs, shoulder grabs, grabs towards the belt where weapons are carried. Additionally, the finishing strike w/shout is shown as an empty hand kill but to practitioners it's understood that this simulates drawing the tanto dagger or wakazashi short sword to deliver the killing blow to the attacker. It's not an art designed for unarmed or disarmed warriors/knights on the battlefield, nor civilian empty hand dueling. It's specifically created for armed samurai knights assigned as indoor palace guards whom carried weapons & members of the court whom carried a tanto dagger. Think of a modern court bailiff who carries a pistol in court while visitors must all disarm, thus any intent to attack the judge must over power & disarm the bailiff of his weapon to use it against the judge. So Daito Ryu is an effective art created for such a scenario. Very effective for police, law enforcement, anyone whom carries a weapon concerned w/weapon retention & counter-abduction in a combative situation. I explain this because very few uninitiated understand what's being demonstrated when they see Daito Ryu. So they claim it's w/out merit in an MMA cage, grappling match or fist fight. It's purpose is NOT unarmed dueling. It's extremely effective for it's designed purpose.

First, some history context would be needed in order to understand the differences.
You can start off with Kobayashi Kiyohiro's interviews by Guillaume Erard: guillaumeerard.com/daito-ryu-aiki-jujutsu/articles-daito-ryu-aiki-jujutsu/interview-with-kobayashi-kiyohiro/

it always amazes me how choreographed these demonstrations are. I get that it's a show, but people don't attack like that

As answered earlier, those are "demonstrations" not of efficiency, but techniques, and the audience is mainly composed of seasoned practitioners of various arts.
The purpose is to show what the art does in training, not how it is supposed to apply to real situations.
Of course, each school and teacher has its own way of doing demonstrations, but the point is generally to always show the same kind of technique, so expert eyes can see the evolution of the practitioner.
Most people start martial arts because of what they see in movies and want to learn how to fight. The truth is, most of them are completely inefficient because the efficiency doesn't come from the art but from the person and the person experience (basically, if you want to learn how to fight, you have to fight...).
In Japan it is very unlikely that you see a demonstration that emulate a real fight, and that's actually the most honest way to demonstrate the art.

@@seidobudostudies Most martial arts and katas known today are watered down. Most combat martial arts taught and used during the old age were taught with efficiency and application in mind. They usually directly addressed attacks or situations that were commonly faced during actual combat. They did not teach "techniques" and hope that the person will be able to naturally figure out how to apply it in combat, they TRAINED for actual combat with techniques that apply directly. Almost none of the real combative stuff has survived to the modern era for a range of reasons.

And this is based on what precisely? Research, arguments, logic reasoning? Because all I see in your message is your opinion but nothing to demonstrate your point...
On the other hand, we have researchers such as Donn Drager, Oleg Benesh, Alexander Bennett, Karl Friday, Ellis Amdur, who argue that Koryu bugei did not have as a primary vocation to be systems of training for the battlefield either, and that they were in fact already, to a large extent, educational methods.
So, regarding your *opinion*, I would simply answer that what is claimed without proof can be dismissed without proof.

hackedit4u You're right, it's not "cool". It's devastatingly effective. Techniques that can shred ligaments and snap bones, tear muscles and pop joints out of their sockets aren't supposed to be cool. But if you are attempting to say these are fake or ineffective, I can guarantee, after having trained in Daito Ryu for some time and having trained with police officers who have used Daito Ryu techniques with brutal effectiveness, that it is extremely effective and extremely painful.

Well, he's right actually, but he just doesn't get the point.
Those are "demonstration" not of efficiency, but techniques, and the audience is mainly composed of seasoned practitioners of various arts.

Now, if you think Karate or Judo, or any other Japanese martial arts works better than Aikido because their demonstration look better, well, you're completely wrong but in that case, it means you definitely don't have experts eyes.

I've been lucky enough to train in Shotokan Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu. I have no doubt that Daito Ryu is my favorite. Not only because of it's lineage and beautiful traditions but because of it's brutal effectiveness.

Seido Co., Ltd & BudoExport - Budo Equipment & Practice in Japan I agree.
I have a brown belt in Okinawa shorin ryu karate do
And am a 4th you in kyokushin
And have been practicing judo for 1 year.
I respect aikido despite it being a very soft art compared to what I practice.
      And often go to demos.
I have been to aikido classes to cross train for a few months, and feeling the techniques first hand makes you verify their effectiveness.
Similar to judo,if you get caught and don't resist right, you going down.

    • @seidobudostudies
      @seidobudostudies  6 лет назад +1

Well, soft... it depends on the teacher.
Look at Chiba sensei's Aikido: ruclips.net/video/fzohxs5C3Kw/видео.html
I've heard of more than one Karateka who thrown the towel after a few months with him.
That kind of practice isn't very wide spread, but it is still Aikido, and if you look for it, you'll get it. Same with Karate isn't it ? Most of the teaching is quite soft, but if you do Kyokushin for example, it's a bit more... intense !
