  • Degasi was a medium sized ship that was owned and operated by the Torgal Corporation - a small clan-corp of the Mongolian Independent States. The Torgal Corporation was by no means massive, but it did have plenty of experience hauling materials across space, and talks were even being made of the company constructing a brand new phasegate. At the head of it all was Paul Torgal, who became the company’s CEO following his mother’s retirement. Often traveling with a skeleton crew, Paul was well known for his ability to make impulsive, but profitable decisions.
    For the Corporation’s next mission, Paul planned to accompany his son Bart as they traveled to a new deep space station, where Bart would serve as Chief Operating Officer for the next 5 years. The Degasi was selected for the mission, and the crew was stripped down to just 6 members as a result of the seemingly simple task at hand.
    For a while, the mission went quite well, the ship was making good time, and the crew were never distressed. Nothing was out of the ordinary until Paul observed a planet in the 4546 system. The object in question was planet 4546B - a near earth-sized terrestrial planet which appeared to contain a liquid ocean. Knowing that these types of planets were the most likely to contain life, Paul makes the decision to detour and investigate up close...

    People rag on Paul too much, and worship Margeurit too much. Both of them had very different views, and neither of them were inherently correct, as Bart says. Paul was playing things safe, perhaps a little too safe. His ideas for survival were sound, but a sound plan never lasts against such an unknown and alien environment. Margeurit was too hot headed and reckless, while she was right about needing the resources from the deep, she was wrong to want to stay down there just for said resources.
    Paul was very understandably not okay with the idea of going deeper, any normal person in such a situation would want to stay on solid ground. His constant threatening to dock Maida's pay also shows that he was confident in escaping, and that he was fearful of the ramifications that could come his way if he did whatever it took to survive.
    Meanwhile Maida was too obsessed with beating the environment. She doesn't like Paul for being a corporatist bourgeoisie in her own words, but also holds a very imperialist "Kill anything threatening, and use the resources to kill the next big thing".
    It's only when Bart reveals they're sick that reality seems to set in for both of them. That they're sick with alien bacteria, and know nothing about it. For once the two are not fighting eachother for power, and their reactions reflect their personalities. Paul is afraid, but trusts his son's intelligence and asks if theres anything he can do to help his son possibly learn more about it, any resource he can scrounge up. But Maida doesn't want to be threatened by it, almost as if the idea of being taken out by an invisible bacterium is insulting to her, so she starts cracking remarks about the absurdity of it and what it could do to them. She doesn't want to be weakened by and lose to such a thing.
    Really, the writing and characterization of the Dagasi Survivors is incredible.

    2 things I noticed:
    Paul saw a light below him so I think he found the lost river and not a squid. He might have been killed by one though. This makes more sense since it's a hint for the player to go deeper.
    Bart talks about visions getting worse. I don't think Kharaa causes these so it's most likely the sea emperor trying to communicate with him like she does with the player but Bart thinks it's the illness.

      perhaps thats why she asked what we are. not because she doesn’t know what a human is, she has to, she has seen them before. maybe she asked because she was curious “if you swam with the current or against it”

    • @waah5901
      @waah5901 Месяц назад +3

      @chenath9582 well shes canonically over a thousand years old lol. She talks about the percursers like she was there, that it was the same batch of eggs they were trying to hatch that you have to. The universe has telepathic individuals, it is an established ability held by some. We see the Sea Emperor communicating with Riley no matter where he is on the map, thats targetted telepathy at over 1 and a half kilometres sometimes. Extrapolating and inferring from that data, we can make the reasonable assumption that she has insight into what you're thinking/feeling. I would imagine that she wanted a sentient being that understood her beyond pure comprehension. She wanted to trust her babies to a likeminded soul.
      If you want more than that then, yeah, we trigger hormonal releases to feel emotions. Sea Emporer has canon enzyme manufacturing abillities, ones she implies she either has command over or understands the inner-workings of to some degree - she mentions in some of her dialogue something like "the aliens foolishly tried to synthesise it" as if it were impossible to synthesise and she knew that and knew why. Understanding beyond estimation at least. If you combine those two things, it isnt a stretch to say she has some kind of untethered connection to the planets ecosystem, that through this she can confirm telepathic readings that you genuinely engage empathy towards her and the planet, and that, in-turn, you are the correct vector of the enzyme knowledge. She was also probably lowkey super deseperate at that point and was largely more willing to trust us than others until that point.
      I like to imagine the Sea Emporer as the devs attempt at showing the "waking earth" theory. That we are an integral part of a totally interconnected ecosystem, not above it. That, in a cool and weird, fairly philosophical way, we are the planet evolved to observe itself. We are the macroscopic white blood cells of the planetary organism, the sentient caretaking component of an ancient and relatively infinite being. Sea Emperors quite literally take this role in a number of ways. Humans should be the Sea Emperors of Earth, but are too indoctrinated by the Alterra's of our world. That we own all, when simply, we belong.

All he wanted to do was research and learn. I feel so bad for him. Obviously Paul and Maida as well, but Bart was so level-headed. Being the mature one at a younger age couldn't have been easy, especially with how hot-headed his father and Maida were (or are in Maida's case.) Such a shame what happened to the degasi crew. I’m curious to know what would’ve happened if the other 3 members survived. Maybe more input would have led them to discovering the truth of the aliens, reinforcement platform, the sea emperor etc. And to think that Bart (and kind of margeruite) were on the right path to figuring out all the things that ryley eventually did. Also a shame that the aurora destroyed barts final base. Would’ve liked to have seen those pda’s. I wonder what I would’ve been like if the reaper never destroyed their base. What if ryley was part of the degasi crew. There’s so much potential for what if scenarios about this game. I know that Marguerite survives and is in below zero, but I haven’t played it yet, so idk if she mentions the events of the first game, or anything else she has to offer. Paul mentions tentacles, calls it a kraken and reapers are the prey of seadragons, so maybe a fresh one was too much to pass up? And of course ingame mechanics lock creatures on each biome, but in nature animals, even more apex predators, do as they please, so it's not that hard to imagine a seadragon hunting for reapers outside the lava zones. i feel bad for Bart, he was young and such a romantic, kid deserved better. Does anyone know when the Degasi crashed on 4546B? Like how many years/months before the Aurora? I might have missed that information.

Curious around the world and he was determined to find the cure. Too bad he didn't make it. About Paul, even though he is elder, he was arrogant and completely listens only to himself and stuborn. I will say, I love that the devs went out of their way to create backstories for the victims of the degasi. They didn’t have to. Hell they even could’ve just made these bases belong to other Aurora survivors but they chose to expand on them, make them distinct and even give them flaws. They very well could’ve made it had Paul not been so reluctant and Marguerit wasn’t so reckless. Marguerit was fearless and a talented fighter, Bart was intelligent and Paul had information on their technology that could’ve helped them with finding new equipment and getting them where they needed to go.
