Rimworld Beta 18 is here and we begin Episode 1 of our Rimworld Ice Sheet Tribal Challenge! Survival on the Ice Sheet is tough and we spice up the survival challenge even further: We pick Rimworld’s Tribal start but only choose one single colonist who will start with nothing. No weapons, no food, no medicine, no materials. Starting with nothing is one of the hardest challenges in Rimworld and we also crank up the difficulty to Randy Random Extreme.
The Ice Sheet is one of Rimworld’s harshest and most dangerous biomes. It is not quite as inhospitable as the Sea Ice biome, but it’s a close second. The freezing temperatures make plant growth impossible and animals like Snow Hares and Polar Bears only rarely find their way onto the Ice Sheet. Visitors also do not pass by frequently: Both Raiders and Traders tend to avoid the Ice Sheet, leaving us with little contact to the outside world.
The modified Rimworld Tribal start offers an additional challenge: We start with only a fraction of the available research projects unlocked and research speed will see a hefty penalty. Our single tribal colonist will therefore start the game without electricity and - new in Rimworld Beta 18 - also without a bed. Tribal colonists can also only access a very limited set of childhood and adulthood backgrounds, giving them further disadvantages compared to more developed factions.
Starting with nothing on the Ice Sheet might be the ultimate Rimworld challenge. Without weapons, armor, medicine food or building materials, the survival of our tribal colonist always hangs by a thread. Despite these challenges, the Ice Sheet start goes surprisingly smoothly: Our single tribal colonist hunts some food and builds a shelter around a steam geyser for warmth. The natural heat of the steam geyser keeps the small starter base warm and our colonist from freezing to death. We soon welcome our first group of visitors on the Ice Sheet, but have nothing to trade with them.
Episode 1 of this Rimworld Tribal Ice Sheet Challenge ends with a small shelter, equipped with all the things necessary to start bigger projects in the next episode: A simple research bench, a stool, a table and a crafting spot offer plenty of opportunities to increase our colonist’s chances at survival.

The goal of this Rimworld Ice Sheet Tribal Challenge is to start with nothing on the Ice Sheet with a single tribal colonist and survive to reach the end of the game. While Rimworld Beta 18 does not have quests or achievements, it does have an end - provided you survive long enough to see it. Survival is key in this tribal ice sheet challenge: Food will be scarce, temperatures will be freezing and our tribal colonist will be all on his own to face the dangers that Randy Random throws his way.
I am by no means an expert on Rimworld strategy and tactics, but I have successfully survived this ice sheet scenario off-camera for multiple years and I have picked up a few neat strategies along the way. This Rimworld Tribal Ice Sheet Challenge tries to mix challenging gameplay with a few strategy tips and tricks on how to survive on the Ice Sheet with a single tribal colonist. Strategy and planning are key for survival in Rimworld Beta 18, especially on the Ice Sheet. Every move needs to be carefully thought through, otherwise it might end up in disaster. While this series is not a complete Rimworld Strategy Guide, it will heavily feature elements of a Rimworld Ice Sheet Guide. We will discuss strategies for choosing a starting location and occasionally switch to more of a Rimworld Guide. You will find info cards throughout the entire video, serving as overview strategy guides for different aspects of the game.
Rimworld is a Sci-Fi colony builder simulation game focused on managing a small group of survivors. Rimworld is developed and published by Ludeon Studios. The game was released as an early access alpha version in 2014 and saw a release on Steam in 2016. As of today, the game is still in early access but out of Alpha, with Rimworld Beta 18 being the current version of the game. The game has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and players alike.
All Rimworld Beta 18 gameplay for this Rimworld Ice Sheet Tribal Challenge was recorded on the PC in 1080p Full HD.
There's no better feeling than the start of a new series! We finish 2017 with the launch of the Rimworld Ice Sheet Tribal Challenge. The series will be a strategic approach to Rimworld and the challenge that we have created demands that every move we make is carefully planned and executed. This includes a rather lenghty preparation segment that you can skip through with the timestamps below:
► Selecting a Landing Site on the Ice Sheet: 5:20
► Creation of our Tribal colonist: 8:32
► Ice Sheet Start of Gameplay: 12:25
Your voice reminds me so much of a pilot, I love it
Great work ! Hardmode ! oh yes!
Brilliant series, I'm am settling down to watch the whole lot, loads of Information I previously did not know and will incorporate into my colonies. Superb Description and Detailed Information for what and why.
Sorry man, If I or my tribe saw you, interacted with you for 5 minutes we would see a S&M Hannibal Lector to eliminate post haste. Speaking of which. Do they have a Vampire mod for this game? It seems like it might be better suited to that intellectual play style.
could you please be more faster ?
This series convinced me to buy Rimworld. 2,200 hours later I think it was money well spent.
Bought this years ago still can muster the courage to start on an ice sheet though 🤣🤣. But i enjoy the game everybit

Coming back to rewatch this series like 4 years later. As far as time spent and enjoyment gained from a game Rimworld is easily in my top 5. Not sure what order it would be but it's definately up there with Stellaris, Stardew Valley and Runescape. No clue what else would be in there. The Pokemon franchise as a whole at first I guess?

The sound of your voice combined with the way you narrate makes me feel like I'm watching a relaxing episode of the discovery channel, following a primitive man through his struggle to survive in the harsh ice-age.

the universe is very unforgiving, sometimes strangling a rabbit can go awry, yes but simply giving up is far less engaging than trying again and again, switching your tactics just a little bit but enough to see yourself triumphant
rimworld is very much about getting the initial ball rolling and then mowing everything down with it, randy or cassandra always do their best to entertain the public rather than please the craftsman of the story
Why, yes, RUclips algorithm. I'd love to watch Pete Complete's entire ice sheet series for the third time.

This is so nostalgic.. You are the reason im so picky with stone types, I remembered that fact for 2 years until I bought the game myself!
I can't figure out what it is, if it's the tone or the accent or the style of narration, but this episode makes me think of David Attenborough. "And now, we see the Cambiar in what passes for its natural habitat, eating snow hares raw due to the lack of available resources."

Yep his really good at explaining i like it
kinda made me wonder why he put the first dumping stockpile for the first rabbit meal away from the shelter he'd just built, eating the rabbit out in the open instead of inside and warming up some while doing so. He then left the door open so everytime the pawn went to sleep inside the building, it had outside temperature haha. Also if he built the building like 1x1 bigger, he would have made the room "rather tight" instead of "cramped". Not a bad start still and should make for a great LP.
Whiskiz Yo He left the door open because the room was too hot with the door closed.
he can carry a massive adult polar bear back at his base but not two snow hares at the same time lol
So with the Pete seed, we can no longer find the same spot, however there is a nearby mountain range called Cambiar mountains.
Ah, good, it's not just me... I wonder, maybe this world generation has changed when going to 1.0... There's also another mountenous spot with marble, sandstone and granite near there, though it has caves... I'll check that one out ;)
That one was no good, but I found a map very similar to Cambiar's!
Use the seed "pete" with 100% coverage but also reduce the "overall temperature" slider by one point (I noticed that with the new defaults, no tiles got anywhere near as cold as in Pete's series, but with this I got at least the numbers to match up pretty well).
Very near the north pole (press W until you reach it, then press A or D to rotate - the rotation center is the north pole) there's a tile at 87.45°N 120.74°W, three tiles away from an impassable mountain ridge that starts at the north pole. This tile is adjacent to three flat ice sheet tiles, two large hill tiles and one mountainuous (hope that helps finding it).
It has the same stone types, a chokepoint with a "courtyard" in front of the mountain in the North-East and even also has a polar bear and a couple snowhares on the map. Unfortunately the geysirs are only good for early game, as none is inside the "courtyard", so no geothermal energy. Instead you have ample room for four our more wind turbines in the courtyard (also makes for more space for invaders to land in, but oh well...).
There is a second chokepoint in the middle of the map, separating north from south, which is useful for that early game as there's a geysir near it.This tile is much farther away from any settlements, so trade caravans will have to wait for the transport pod stage.
I think this is a close as we will get without resorting to some heavy modding ;)
Generation changed again with 1.1 XD My best tip, though it's not perfect: use seed pete, keep the coverage at 30% and reduce Overall Temperature all the way to low. To the north-west there's a point where two mountain ranges meet at the coast at a bay (due north from "Badchest Mountains and due west from Skunk Claw Hills). It forms an upside.-down U and near the top of that, at 44.33°N 29.87°W there is a Mountainous ice sheet with Marble, Granite, Limestone. It's drectly south of one of the impassable tiles of the mountain range.
What you get: Geysir to the south-west in a secluded bit of mountain, but not as secure as Cambiar's (you have to construct like 20-30 walls to close it off; you get a lake directly behind yourr traps though, good for shooting accross). It's a lot bigger than Cambiar's Courtyard, it fits quite a number of wind turbines. There's a bit of compacted steel there, but on the way from your starting position there are also steel structures you can deconstruct (I think that's faster?).
Three snowhares and an arctic wolf are also on the map, unlike the Combiar's polar bear you can also make meat out of the wolf if you want to risk it (or are fine with reloading).
Excellent delivery. Methodical, interesting, no childish hype and still entertaining. Well done. Keep it up.
Coming back to watch this series after the conclusion of the desert challenge. Absolute banger
Just came back here from the finale to reflect on how far we went with the adventures of Cambiar, our favorite cannibal. Great series, Pete. All in all, one of the best things I've watched on RUclips.
Me too.
So I decided to see if the seed used in this series is the same now as it was then (it wasn’t) but I decided to look at the ice sheets and it just so happens there’s a mountain range down there named “Cambiar Mountains”
Just came back to watch this series all over again, because I just can't wait in between extreme desert episodes!
Coming back to rewatch this once again. 5 years later and it's still a great watch!
Holy shit- this series was from 4 years ago!?! Granted, I joined on a little way in, but hey... makes me feel like I've been around a while... 😁 Keep it up dude!
Rimworld is one of the most fun games to watch. It just has incredible replayability, especially with such a HUGE mod community. The creator, Tynan Sylvester did a great job. Don't ever forget that name!
I know this is a while after this was put out, but for anyone that wants to duplicate this playthrough like I did after watching this a couple of days ago, there's a couple of updated tips I'd add, some of which is because of updates, so that's not to say all of this isn't good advice when it was made!!
1. Raw cannibalism isn't worth it. You get +20 for eating raw human meat and -7 for eating raw meat, for a net mood value of +13, but you also run a high risk of food poisoning, which can really mess your playthrough up. Alternatively, if you cook human meat, you get a +15 value with a much lower risk of food poisoning. So +2 higher value and way less risk of getting sick.
2. Traps are a lot harder to use now. You can't reset with the new update, so you will drain thru steel like crazy. You can use things like sandstone, but the build points to construct are 6-8X that of things like wood or steel. I have a maze similar to Pete, but invest in turrets as fast as possible to try to pick off before they get there because rebuilding traps without steel is horribly time consuming. There is a mod that will let you reset traps instead of having to rebuild them every time. A bit of an arguable immersion break if you add it, but I'd argue it's well, well worth it as an alternative.
3. Not sure if he mentions this in this 1sxt video but he will a lot later on--infestations because of warmth. True, but I've tried a couple of ways and its still worth warming at least your room and research areas. The decrease in speed without that is more noticeable than the risk of infestations. The other places (storage, kitchen, etc) are worth keeping cold though. More than likely that will stave of infection and them being cold aren't really negative buffs. Keep your warm areas super small though. If an infestation does happen there, that way you'll have minimal attackers that can fit in the room.
I'll add more thoughts later if anyone is able to see this in the mass of comments way before me! Also if you find this useful, give it a thumbs up so other people can see it :).
Noice ta
It’s 13 20-7 =13 not 14
Thanks! Very useful :)
I'm currently in the middle of an anxiety episode and I just want to thank you for this series. Your calm voice and expert gameplay make me feel like it'll be alright.
Man I haven't thought about this in years time to do a full re-watch
...I have 3.190,1 hours in this game.
Today I learned that the stones have unique effects/are different from each other.
this is one of the best lets play series currently out there. not only for rim world but in general. great game knowledge, calm nice voice, dark humor and very high production quality.
You have recently become on of my favorite youtuber's, I love the detail and craft you put into your videos. Your world building is beautiful and i appreciated it when i started with your 2k18 my league series and now I am so glad that you started one of my favorite games Rimworld. Please Keep it Up, I will support.
Thank you for that, it really means a lot! :) It might be an unsual combination for some, so I'm happy to hear that you like both this and the 2K18 series.
Every so often I come back to this and the desert series because the storytelling and your voice is just so nice to listen to
Revisiting this video purely because I’ve just started my own ice sheet challenge… and my very first visitor is a dude named Cambiar. 😳 Heck of a coincidence, but I’m glad it reminded me of this series!
my favorite youtube series, my favorite youtube personality, my favorite cannibal
Coming back to this series that introduced me to Rimworld is so nostalgic. I based my first colonies on this setup on the ice sheet. A crash course into the cannibal life on the Rim.
I've played rimworld for years, but I couldn't help but sit through you telling us how the game worked, and everything, just because of your voice
@ 23:30 Visitors Traders - no Item or silver to trade, but you get the second event: Cargo Pods. and your visitors are still on map -> If the trador wants some or all of it -> Just create a stockpile area over the cargo pods landing. and it will count as in your inventory for trade. It can help any of you in this scenario, if you have a wealthy trader in demand, don't miss the occasion to trade all of it from your base. no need to haul it :-)
Apparently. the most difficult narrator for this particular scenario is Peaceful Phoebe. Her raids aren't as big as Cass' (or Randy's, on average), but that _actually_ means you'll have less resources to work with, on top of the "breaks" between raids being much longer, which means a slow and painful death from starvation or freezing.
On the flip side, once you've made it to the late game, Cass will just pile on the pressure until you lose. Randy is of course random, which makes the challenge more entertaining and also more frustrating at times, but still probably not as frustrating as Phoebe.
I like this laid back commentary style, it feels like a documentary.
This was actually really cool to watch. I'd never consider a single colonist colony normally, but your playthrough actually shows some tricks I'd never even think of - combining work areas, for example. Your voice is also excellent - very smooth and calming. You definitely make an excellent narrator.
Huh, I wanted to play along but the seed seems to create a different world now. The location you got was so perfect.
I watched this a year ago and never rely thought about how much work this must have taken, and just how awesomely entertaining this play through is. A brilliant piece of work to be sure! Thank you.
The fact that this has 1.445 million views atm is great.

This series never gets old, the most strategic gamer on youtube!
My favorite youtuber doing a Rimworld Ice Sheet run? My favorite run of Rimworld? Christmas isn't over after all!
Thank you! Do you have any important tips that you feel I need to know?
Try to rush turrets because Randy will overload you ASAP with mechs, don't focus on plantations because of the constant ships that will be falling. If it's a psych ship just leave it alone unless you have the fire and manpower to fight the mechs. Other than that, human meat is never enough. One great haul will be gone before you notice it :)
AND do not recruit anybody who's not a cannibal. Use them for a few days (if their stats are interesting) and then kill them out in the cold. Otherwise they will have major breaks from eating human meat and Cambiar may grow attached to them. That would give you a few days of "having nobody to do anything" which will kill you in a Randy Ice Sheet xD
Very good points! I haven't had mechs yet in the playthrough I started off-screen a few weeks ago, but they could be devastating. Recruitment will be extremely slow, there's barely enough food for one person in the early game. And Hydroponics were not all that useful the last time I tried them because of the high power consumption.
Correction: I had mechs, but no centipedes. Scythers were not that big of a challenge though, most of them fell victim to the deadfall traps.
went back to the original series to remember everything that Pete has gone through.
whoever read this, i hope you're having a great time watching all of Pete's videos :D
I will. You too!
My god, what a good series, I'm about to watch it all again!

Hey Pete! Just want you to know your Rimworld playthroughs are better than most tv show series' I hope you continue to make them! They are so fun to watch! I'm all caught up on your current desert playthrough (which has been really good btw) and I thought I'd take this time to watch through your Ice Sheet playthrough from beginning to end. Also, your voice is lovely.

Here we are again; such a fulfilling end to such an amazing series. Time to binge it all over again and see the amazing colony and Cambiar take over the ice sheet with his iron, cannibal fist.
I know it's been a while, but I loved this series. If time allows with your real life, would love to see another on the opposite end of the temperature spectrum: a desert, high-heat challenge. Whether or not, loved the show. Great job! Thanks for the entertainment and the education.

Can you name your minions with sub names? That would be cool looking how your subsribers struggle and die out of starvation.
Great idea! I think Cambiar will likely remain Cambiar - I have become too used to his name while I made this video. But naming new colonists after subscribers is a fantastic suggestion. I'll think about how to collect names.
Please don't let me die out of starvation... or get eaten by space goats.
I can't make any promises...
Or get eaten by Cambiar... fuck that guy.
Ahahahahaha! Yes, yes, yes! This is an excellent idea! Hey Pete, if you see this, can I be a smart but weak character? I'll be hilarious to see me try to survive something like this!
I know this is a bit old by now but I really admire your narration and smooth voice. It makes perfect to watch late at night and really stands out from other rimworld content makers! Keep it up, great work!
You sound like ReformistTM, and by god that is a wonderful thing
By far the best Ice Sheet series on YT.
This sounds like a nature documentary... I'ma watch XD
My recommended feed kept showing this one. I normally don't watch RimWorld letsplays, but I gave it a shot. I love your commentary it reminds me of a nature documentary narrator except we're watching some tunnel digger mad child grown cannibal making it out on the ice sheets. I really approve of you editing out the waffling and deciding on what to do and just having a continuous stream of changes throughout. A lot of letsplays of this game drag on with commentators struggling to figure out what to do.
Anyone else watching this again whilst waiting for more episodes of the new Rimworld Series ? :P
Not only your voice sounds like a documentary, this is an actual documentary of a Rimworld playthrough
I actually love you and this

No dubstep intro, no "Hey its your boy", no like and subscribe shilling, nothing. Just good gameplay with even better commentary.
I found your channel at four in the morning by accident and I've never even heard of this game. I have a love for strategy games in general though and combined with you making good content, I'm all ready to binge the whole series dropping likes on every vid.
Cheers man.
OOO! Finally an excuse to learn about this game and watch someone play it!
An Ice Sheet run is the best way to learn about it, from my own experience :)
I definitely learned a lot from playing on the ice sheet, it forces you to micromanage a bit more than usual.
Back where it all began for me with you Pete ❤
After this series, or when this series was active a lot of handicap implemented, so do this in actually version will be harder or at least diferent:
- Penalties when seen fresh and rotten dead human bodies
- No plasteel, components from any mechanoid except the centipedes (only 5 plasteel and 1 component, but idk if it reworked again)
- Traps now requires materials to rebuild
- So much less steel from mechanoids
- No scyther blades from scythers
- You cant sell clothes from dead bodies (edited 1)
- No milk from muffalos
I saw the first 6 minutes and thought: Oh, dude, this gameplay will be short. And yet, the calm voice was entertaining and I could listen to it while doing stuff at work. Nice!
just something to note. A steam geyser is bad solution to escape hypothermia in a survival situation, because you will get you/your clothes wet which will drain your heat even faster.
The hypothermia would only be a problem once you step away from the geyser. If you dry off before you do so, you'd be fine.
But how do you dry off without stepping away from the geyser?
You don't literally have to throw yourself into the steam, just stay relatively close to it to warm up
I can believe I'm going to re-watch this series.
But is soo good, pls Pete.
Make more rimworld, your voice and the time and effort you put on this videos is just amazing.
you forgot the psychopath trait... needed to stop debuffs from chopping up people
Nope, cannibals don’t care about it either. Otherwise it would be a bit strange.
I don't care what i'm watching on your channel, your voice is mesmerizing and an epitome of beauty in sound.
I'm sorry but your title seems to say "Order up, one dead tribal."
over a million views, seems legit
only 86k subs.... something is not legit.
your channel is a definition of hidden gem. I hope you get to a more appropriate sub count soon, you definitely deserve it.
My person would probably already be dead.
Oh yeah, it really has reached 1M views! Nice job, Pete! Now, I feel like rewatching the series just to see Cambiar owning the Ice Sheet, the Mechanoids, the Raiders, everyone.
