What we need here, is an absolute car enthusiast to review the car.. Perhaps the reviewers have driven so many super cars that they never get quite excited over a new one.. Maybe Autocar should put young car lovers behind the wheels of these cars, so that us behind the screens at home can feel the experience of driving a car that most of us will never be able to afford? ;)
***** I don't think he sounds bored. And even if he were, we're not in school - we're allowed (supposed) to get excited on our own, if the subject is worthy. And anyway, I've watched plenty of car reviews completely miss the point in a sideways haze of whooping. It seemed to take months of videos (for example) for someone to come out and say "isn't the alfa 4c a little bit shit?", because everyone was busy shouting about carbon, light weight, and looks. It's quite nice to not be treated like an idiot from time to time. It's becoming rare.
Never heard this guy rev the engine beyond what sounds like 3-4 thousand rpm. You are driving a Ferrari, at least let your viewers hear what the car sounds like to red line.
Funny to read all the comments saying 'boring review'. It struck me as a down to earth, no nonsense informative review. Just because it's a Ferrari doesn't mean we need to be jizzing our pants whilst the guy is slinging it sideways in plumes of tyre-smoke saying things like "Passion!" over the engine noise. I liked the review and appreciate the way it was delivered - guy drives car, talks about car and how it feels. Kudos.
Yes, that's exactly what it means. Driving a Ferrari is a dream to most, and these videos are the closest many of the people watching them are ever going to get to one of them, so show a little excitement. That's why we watch videos.
So for the last 8 years I've worked for a dealership group that among other brands has Ferrari. Most of the customers I deal with (on the phone) seem pretty chill rather than super passionate. If they have a Cali or Cali T its because its a nice daily, not a dream machine (they usually have something else like a 488 or Huracan too). @@philnleblanc6664
Jeeze, so many people complaining about this video being boring. Autocar is a very straight magazine and always has been. The emphasis is on information. Show me another magazine that has the same amount of in-depth info about the cars capabilities in their reviews. I'll be waiting a while because there isn't one. The guy doing this, Matt Prior, generally does pretty good reviews and if you're actually looking for information about the car and how it compares to the previous one, this is a great review and should really excite anyone who's got an order in or is thinking of making one or even someone who is dreaming one day of putting down that deposit. If you want sideways the whole time, or whatever else constitutes "not boring" you're reading the wrong magazine and watching the wrong channel. It's like going to the library expecting to feel an adrenaline hit. I enjoy these fairly straight Autocar reviews, I hope they keep doing them, although the whinging market will probably dictate they end up having to change to stay afloat in the end. PS. Great improvement Ferrari, now just bring some more beauty to the table and we're set
Shut up with your ''boring reviews'' go watch gymkhana or whatever wanna be car lovers, this is a true neutral review of a new ferrari, dosnt need any burnout or stuff like that. True lovers love information about new cars, and this is what this guys is giving us.
Love how there was some proper driving and even a couple slides but not a complete tire-destroying, sideways review. Love when reviews are more than just drifting.
I want information, but if I wanted pure information, I would've just read the article they, and other magazines, will inevitably write. And while I don't want to watch 7 minutes worth of drifting, I would like some better and more excitement in the presentation side of the video.
I agree, so refreshing to go back to old school Top Gear pre Clarkson days review style. I learn nothing from those types of reviews other than how big the presenters ego is. More like this please Autocar. No more squealing tires or pointless track tests. More real world like this!
The thing I really wanted to know about the Cali T was the sound..... I wanted to hear if the turbo has dulled the sound compared to the old one ....but he didn't even talk about the sound....the sound is the most important thing about a car when it comes to aural excitement ...
You're saying Ferrari has never made a front engine, rear wheel drive convertible, before? Because they have. Not all Ferraris are bred for the track, mate. This Ferrari fits just fine in the lineup.
@Tommy Fletcher No, dude, chill, i didn't mean THAT. Yes I'm aware there are the v12 GT Ferraries(the FF, F12 and it's predecessors), which all of them have more distinct position in the Ferrari line-up. The California is just doesn't have that special stand alone factor for appreciation, it's just a cheaper model/entry level Ferrari that imo should not even exist in the Ferrari line-up, you're missing the point.
chiahao86 Haha, I'm not missing the point, nor am I irate. You're simply offering a negative opinion about a car to be contrarian. The FF is a Ferrari that I can understand making a purist upset, but the California is fine.
I don't think my opinion was toward that car itself, nor trying to be an contrarian. Speaking of purist, Ferrari are definitely not in this category, cool, fast cars, but not purist cars.
Matt Prior, if you are so, so bored driving a brand new Ferrari you need a new hobby This mightn't be the sharpest tool in their fleet, but a more powerful and exciting car than most of us will ever drive.
*Excellent review. Bit sober in terms of the spoken words but concise and instructive and in fact much better to hear without the constant squealing of drifting for spectacularity's sake. Well done.*
nothing wrong with this review but I think I speak for everyone when I say watching Steve Sutcliffe send it sideways for a couple of minutes would have been nice
If I had it, the first thing I'd do is have the ecu tuned to remove the boost restriction in lower gears, to allow for full boost in any gear. I still prefer big displacement motors with superchargers though- My AMG CL55 has the 5.5L V8 with a 2.3L lysholm blower, and has zero lag, makes 600HP and 627TQ. the electromagnetic supercharger clutch activates instantly, or disengages at light throttle driving, so the car IS naturally aspirated when just cruising, but as soon as you put your foot down, the clutch engages in a hundreth of a second, and the blower activates. I LOVE LOVE LOVE those Novitech twin supercharged ferrari's. Those things are amazing.
This man belongs in a library. I was looking forward to a review of this car for so long. And he didn't even answer the one question that I'm sure everyone else is keen to know. Does it sound as good as the old NA version? Disappointing guys.
+Fahad M i have to agree but it is typical English thing. Try to listen to English comentary during football match, oh man, its like wathing paint drying
With the M3/M4 review, half the comments were about how the constant drifting is irrelevant and the reviewer should tell us what it's like to drive normally. Here he's doing just that and now it's 'boring'. I thought it was a great, comprehensive, no-nonsense review. Sutcliffe needs a break too...
last pony turbo was f40 which had no interior at all and this california is dripping in comfort and luxury plus the folding roof is sexy as hell and to top this all its less polluting and more fuel economical.great car
Nice review! Very informative- in 7 minutes he said a lot about the car and if you are not 13 year old, you would apreciate it. Is this a calculator watch???
I fail to understand why people call this review boring. I found it to be informative, which is the purpose of reviewing. The video clearly states the difference between the old and the new cars. It does not sound like being read from a pre-written script. If people want some action, drifts or burnouts or other such stunts, they are not going to find Autocar's channel interesting.
Personally, I like the car. I also like the video. If you're a real "Car enthusiast" you would appreciate the technical aspects given throughout this video. An overall good and quality review. Job well done!
Refreshing that Sutcliffe is not reviewing the car but true, game can be lifted, good to see proper steering control when drifting compared to Sutcliffe's fumbling.
a bit more footage of spirited driving and maybe some misbehavior and this video would be amazing. matt is really well suited to report on cars like this. put him in an F Type R
I love my R231 SL500. Less than half the price of one of these. Fantastic power, torque, build quality & ride comfort. I can't afford a california but I'm not sure I'm any worse off
I am really surprised that car enthusiasts all over the world are still not "getting" it: The bad sounding cars are a result of government regulations and noise emissions limitations. The more efficient engines aren't really the issue here, you can get an amazing sound out of a turbo charged engine too (look at AMG) but noise emissions are regulated and restricted too, so car manufacturers don't really have much of a choice. Very bad (and sad) development for car lovers.
I am not taking anything away from Jaguar, but that would be like comparing a Cadillac to a Rolls Royce. Jaguar is definitely not a Ferrari with the LEGENDARY V12 sound.
Drew Fige Jaguars have a very very rich background... you are referring to a Jaguar as a Cadillac and to Ferrari as RR, comparing them together ? you are talking from your heart, not your knowledge.
Why are people complaining about the presenter, that he is boring,or over intellect?!why? Because he wasn't drifting the car all over the place?aka clarkson?its cool to see a drift, but really, who would drive a california like that?he's reviewing the car as it will be driven,relaxed...he IS a proper car enthousiast!
very nice and informative review people find it boring because they are fuckers and can only dream of a ferrari but can never buy one...i own a california and i must say u have done a great job in reviewing it. Cheers
The Mercedes SL65 AMG is much better looking, white body and black wheels not too mention that sexy V12...perfect! But the California T comes with a Ferrari badge...
i liked the review, interesting to see that ferrari got it right with their new turbo engine! would still take a naturally aspirated ferrari over this any day
Previous incarnation is much nicer to the eye, this one looks like 599 but not aggressive enough to be pretty in my opinion.. however i will not consider buying one anytime soon because, Yugo is a pinnacle of auto industry, buying anything else is a step backwards -.-
They've made that car to attract a new clientele, especially younger buyers,it's a bit like the porsche cayenne and panamera, they make this to collect the funds to make proper goodie's aka laferrari,458 speciale,f12...and thats why i live the california! I did prefer the previous gen's styling, but thats personal!
I love Steve's reviews. But it is refreshing to see a review where powerslides and tire squeal dont overpower the senses. Good info Matt. Soooo the round tail lights are NOT brake lights??? Whats up with that?
Ferrari cars are (in my opinion) represented by two major atributes - sleek design and sound. I am really sad that this car doesn't sound as proper Ferrari should - in this way was the predecessor much more "Ferrari-ish"..
I get that the California T is supposed to be the more comfortable 'baby' Ferrari... but it doesnt mean I want to watch somebody pussyfooting around with it! Its a 552 horsepower Ferrari!! Mr Prior, the pedal on the right makes it go quicker...
There is a balance between entertainment & information, this review is way to far over to the information side. The thing is this is a ferrari, an amazing enthralling bit of kit, to drive one must be quite an experience, the review might as well be for a prius.
To those dissing this car, Ferrari is a business. There is a limit to the number of well-heeled wannabe boy-racers. This is a high performance touring car for a different market segment. Its proper competition is a drop-top Aston or Merc SL, and it whips them.

This isn't a kids review. It's informative and concise. Not every review has to be someone jumping up and down shouting.
Fucking ell'

It is a California. It is built for millionaire's wives, not enthusiasts
Well said
leo karavasilil I know, so has my dead nan.
Glad I watched this review....I just bought a California T about 12 hours ago.

Exactly, people who think actual information is "boring" need to go back to forza or wherever they came from. This is a review not top gear.
It's interesting but boring to watch....no full throttle accelerations or revs. I don't know...

IMO the California doesn't deserve the Ferrari badge, the styling, approach, just doesn't fit in Ferrari category, maybe a top end Maserati.
Take a Maserati over this any day.
You're saying Ferrari has never made a front engine, rear wheel drive convertible, before? Because they have. Not all Ferraris are bred for the track, mate. This Ferrari fits just fine in the lineup.

6:04: Really small rear brake lights. Strange that they don't use the larger circular clusters at the top.

Terrible... The Turbo swallows that nice sound of the V8.
Yeah the Ferrari music is gone :(
Jaguar f type is way better it has orgasmic sounds.
johny johnson hi Jonson welcme

If only the Maserati gt replacement would be as good as this...
Very informative and precise review.

Matt, your wristwatch is awesome!!! :)
Enjoyed the review, thanks
Ok... Siena is a beautiful city.... When will you test it in a circuit ??
I luv all the ferraris and I luv this one too. It's a modern classic already IMO. I'll take it in triple black.
Beautiful car! Elegant and classy.
Isn't this the same engine thats going in the 458 successor? This is an important car.
my little sister fall asleep while watching this:( though at least we know about the California now! which is not bad right?
Very informative review great stuff...
I will one day drive this machine. great job autocue.

What a terrible review, couldn't even pay attention to it.
Wow. Great review man! A very refined car with teeth for the road!

Does this replace the NA California, or just adds to the range?
replace

The solution is to buy older cars then. Or not live in California...

Yet Jaguar manages to make a monstrous sounding Dragon of a car that is better looking and extremely fun and fast. (F-Type)

but i love the look of the old one more.
Great ferrari!! Boooorrinnng review!!
Excellent review - adult, not hysterical - sort of like the car! Keep it up.
really fantastic car. much better than the previous california
Why am I watching this. I can't afford it. lol
You never know Mr beast could be about
Why are people complaining about the presenter, that he is boring,or over intellect?!why? Because he wasn't drifting the car all over the place?aka clarkson?its cool to see a drift, but really, who would drive a california like that?he's reviewing the car as it will be driven,relaxed...he IS a proper car enthousiast!
what watch is he wearing ?
Just two turbos and it's a new Ferrari California. It's much better than the old generation.
very nice and informative review people find it boring because they are fuckers and can only dream of a ferrari but can never buy one...i own a california and i must say u have done a great job in reviewing it. Cheers
Even with the most conservative driving, in actuality I doubt it gets any better than maybe 15mpg
The Mercedes SL65 AMG is much better looking, white body and black wheels not too mention that sexy V12...perfect! But the California T comes with a Ferrari badge...
Give me a california T, fact sheet, and camera crew. I'll make the best review of this car anyone has ever seen.
i liked the review, interesting to see that ferrari got it right with their new turbo engine! would still take a naturally aspirated ferrari over this any day
that exhaust note is ZZzzZZZzz
Previous incarnation is much nicer to the eye, this one looks like 599 but not aggressive enough to be pretty in my opinion.. however i will not consider buying one anytime soon because, Yugo is a pinnacle of auto industry, buying anything else is a step backwards -.-
...sorry I fell asleep. How did the rest of the video turn out?
They've made that car to attract a new clientele, especially younger buyers,it's a bit like the porsche cayenne and panamera, they make this to collect the funds to make proper goodie's aka laferrari,458 speciale,f12...and thats why i live the california! I did prefer the previous gen's styling, but thats personal!
Lol sounded like you're trying to avoid saying that it uses the GM magnetic ride suspension.
Ferrari California T > old ferrari California any day. The California T looks way better I'd say it's an improvement.
I love Steve's reviews. But it is refreshing to see a review where powerslides and tire squeal dont overpower the senses. Good info Matt.
Soooo the round tail lights are NOT brake lights??? Whats up with that?
I really like that, you can't really fault it to be fair
I miss the stacked exhaust. :(
He would be more entertaining reading bedtime stories.
Bit more of sliding so we hear the engine, i think the sound is not very good but only in the end you floor it...
I don't like this car but good review Autocar. No BS, just review.
Ferrari cars are (in my opinion) represented by two major atributes - sleek design and sound. I am really sad that this car doesn't sound as proper Ferrari should - in this way was the predecessor much more "Ferrari-ish"..
New California is spot on, the old one was loathsome.
Love Autocar.
I get that the California T is supposed to be the more comfortable 'baby' Ferrari... but it doesnt mean I want to watch somebody pussyfooting around with it! Its a 552 horsepower Ferrari!! Mr Prior, the pedal on the right makes it go quicker...
this guy is as interesting as watching paint dry
There is a balance between entertainment & information, this review is way to far over to the information side. The thing is this is a ferrari, an amazing enthralling bit of kit, to drive one must be quite an experience, the review might as well be for a prius.
Autocar is getting increasingly annoying. to stay bad has to improve a lot.
To those dissing this car, Ferrari is a business. There is a limit to the number of well-heeled wannabe boy-racers. This is a high performance touring car for a different market segment. Its proper competition is a drop-top Aston or Merc SL, and it whips them.
The front face of the car seems a bit too gentle.
If you want to see big slides and burn outs then go see EVERY OTHER CAR REVIEW EVER MADE. I think it's refreshing to see someone just driving the car as 99% of all owners will drive it.
T off Turbo or Transformer ?
This guy is so much better than that steve guy.
boring review
but the car is miles better looking than the previous model
Sound is compromised we like a natural sounding V8
Would liked to hear the engine sing. It was like he was short shifting at 3,000 - 4,000rpm the whole time.
If you drive this car on Rodeo, people laugh at you because you don't have a 458.
soo true
With that logic, they'd laugh at you in a 458 because you don't have a LaFerrari
HyperLeafBlower Good point:)
I actually prefer the California over the 458 :0
Altough I think the new look is awfull!
***** LMAO. It is what it is:) I like the old one and I like the new one. It's hard to go soft whence you have a hard top.
I want this Ferrari... now!!!
a reason 70℅ of California buyers are new to Ferrari is probably because they pretty much have to get one before they can get a more exclusive Ferrari, like the 458/488
I don't care about the engine and speed. i care about interior comfort and the Ferrari badge that's it.
Amazing boring review, i just kept looking at his watch i want to know what brand it is
Tom Jacobs Seems like a very cheap watch, you shouldn't worry about it.
This was posted on my birthday
Dude, had you just eaten before this, looks like your stifling burps & a little tired haha!
First down vote on an AutoCar vid for me EVER...get Sutcliffe back in the car please
Did you say 3.8 ? Pffft..... Give me a 7 liter v12 gas guzzling, inefficient monster. Should have called this the Hello Kitty version...
Most boring Ferrari test review ever. Such a good turbo charged car with the man doing the explanations without a turbo.
Is it me or that nav screen is almost unwatchabel standing in that position... just too low on the dashboard...
