  • While not the most reliable machine on the market, it is loaded with good useful features including being able to play 14" reels and three speeds up to 30ips.

    It's great that Mara exists. The great problem for most people interested in tape machines is refurbishment if they don'thave the knowledge or time to do refurbishment themselves..

      Indeed! It is very, very assuring to have such a resource and be able to have a live Zoom discussion when something goes wrong. And apparently they have very large installed base - clearly people value that service.

      @@WesleyWattley-xy4fgI think you will get the best information by going on Tapeheads.net forum and asking there, it is frequented by service guys and also customers. I simply don't know.

    I had Mara restore my MCI JH-110A one inch 8 track. They did a wonderful job.

    informative video. Nicely done. Not many machines will take the 14 inch reels. They usually contain 5000 feet of tape. Nice tape head pre shown on this deck too.

    Where do you get your tapes from? I assume that they are master copies not just copes from qobuz or LPs.

    • @Foxbat9000
      @Foxbat9000  4 месяца назад +1

      The tapes I use come from different sources, depending upon my particular needs and the type of music I want. There are some official direct copies of the masters, a few real masters, the safety copies I made and I also use the material from Qobuz - when I want a particular piece. I usually use hi-res files, and play them through a very good quality tube DAC, so they tend to sound very good - much better, than the RUclips can convey.

    Your voice sounds much like Janos Starker. Love your channel.

    1 year warranty?? According to their web site it's 6 months parts and 90 days labour. Well worth over 6K for the base model.

      Sorry, I was quoting from memory, I am pretty sure it was 1 year when I ordered it, but perhaps they changed it since then.

    Any models that are tape lifter-LESS, like some of the Studer machines? Are not they way less prone to causing oxide shedding?

    sorry for the dumb question whats the name of those open reels that you always use? also what is the advantage. I have an MCI jh110 with a JRF 1/2" headstack modification. Is it possible to do that with 1/2" tape?

    • @Foxbat9000
      @Foxbat9000  3 месяца назад

      People use different names for them: pancakes, platters, flanges, or the more official AEG DIN.The advantages are easy access to tape, lower cost and slightly higher capacity due to smaller hub diameter, and to me the overall higher convenience. I have never seen that used with 1/2" tape, but I do that. I had to modify the hubs for wider tape - you can see that in another video. However, even though I believe there was at some point the solution for that machine, I have never seen it, so I had to make my own.

      getting away from the stock playback electronics even on a consumer machine such as a Pioneer, Teac or Akai makes a huge difference or improvement in sound quality. Tons of stand alone phono preamps are in the marketplace both new and used where you can convert the playback EQ to NAB or IEC and not all of these are super expensive. You'll need one with at least 55 to 58db of gain so MM only units will not work, need one with an adjustable MC input.
