    Some advice from a veteran of over 50 years who has used reel to reel tape...never ever touch the tape itself EVER with your bare fingers! You have now contaminated the tape with finger oils and will degrade the quality of the tape in that area now and spread.

    Or detour around guide roller completely? Fast rewind of 14" 1/2" tape is a scary experience. Since playing tape is a process of continously polishing down the magnetic heads until the gap open..... Sometimes I will insert a short piece of wax back paper of double-side tape in front of the recording head during casual listening.

      I sometimes do that too, I use either the hold down tape or aluminum duct tape.

    Lyrec PTR-1 "Frida" is absolutely wonderful. Fortunetly I have one of the earlier MK-1 in my collection. A810 used "shift" or "modifier" key to achieve slower wind in three step (?). For A820 it is a different story. I don't have A80. Your improvised method of stopping guide roller is very creative. I probably would do the same under this situation: it is simple and fuctional. BTW very impressive collection! Lyrec TR55? OTARI MTR15?

    • @Foxbat9000
      @Foxbat9000  7 месяцев назад

      No, no TR55, as I have never seen one for sale in the US, and no MTR15... they are rare, and I missed one recently because I was busy with something else at the moment. I would not mind having one in good condition. But Sony APR-5000 is something close to it. :)

    Thank you very much for a very informative and important video!
    Do you know any way of doing this with the ReVox B77 HS, and the Technics RS 1500?
    Keep up the great work! 👏🏻👏🏻

    • @Foxbat9000
      @Foxbat9000  7 месяцев назад +2

      Two very different cases. The B77 is already very gentle on tape, but low speed wind can probably be achieved by using a drop off resistor (as is done in many Japanese machines) or even a transformer - a system similar to that of the Telefunken. Ether way it would require a much more involved surgery than I did to the Studer. In case of RS-1500 I have not been inside of one, just owned it many years ago, but since it has the tape speed sensor it appears to me that a change in software could take care of that. That, however, is not something for a home hobbyist. From memory the wind there is brutal, so some improvement would be welcome.

      @@jameslaidler2152 I am not going to lie to you by saying accident can't happen... yes, there is a BIT more risk, so you better know what you are doing. I have been lucky so far, and I have really pushed the envelope - like using 14" pancakes on 12" platters. :) You definitely don't want to be arguing with your teenage daughter while doing that. :)
      But realistically, most studios use that format day in and day out, 24 hours a day.

      @@Foxbat9000 As I know it has the same Yaskawa print motors as Frida has, so they should not be weaker, but perhaps the tape tension is different.

    • @Foxbat9000
      @Foxbat9000  7 месяцев назад

      @@szvencel The whole layout is different. Frida has a capstan and two tension control systems, left and right. In Fred the two motors gently move the tape across a very simple tape path with low resistance. So the motors could be the same, but doing very different job. I have not measured the tape tensions in the two machines (might do it later), but the Fred's tape pack is very soft. Especially when you are using pancakes.
