So funny I was a deck seaman in 1982. (AFS-7) San Jose I was called the N-word so many times and was fighting and ended up in the brig for 3 days bread and water and that is what's what they gave me, but they didn't kick me out. Fast forward I retired after 30 yrs as a E-9 and they paid for my medical school. Now I'm a doctor at the VA Hospital. So I know.

Please don't go PACT. When you're picking a rate at MEPS, tell them you're willing to wait for a rate to open up. ANYTHING but PACT, CS, or BM

I was undesignated for 2 years...i took an early seat to boot camp and this was the only way out of my bad situation...i studied the asvab day and night for 6 months straight...i took the re take and became a machinist mate...life is what you make of it in the Navy...i retired back in 2008...the road to it was tough...but i am happy i went through hell to get there.

They got your ass. Ya man they got me to. I scored like a 36 on the asvab all I qualified for was like RS,BM,CS they told me with the pact program is I will work with every rate. Obviously not entirely true majority of the time you’re with the BM’s chip paint, prime, paint haha. I was fortunate enough to work for hazmat and went DCPO but towards the end I was able to work with the HM’s and get some essential quals

I was an AT and so long as my stuff wasn’t broke, there wasn’t much for me to do but the mechs always needed an extra hand pulling gearboxes and rotor blades so I got to be a “team player” when there is work to be done. When the bird came back down for one of my weapons systems, I was the only one qualified and needed so I got to stick around when my squadron mates got to go home! Sometimes it sucks being the “smart guy” too! I went into CIC daily to get all our crypto stuff but I was happy to spend most of my time out where I could see the sun and feel the ocean breeze! The A/C was nice in CIC especially in the IO in the summer months so I’d linger a little longer and visit with some of my OS buddies!

I got out 2 years ago on a 3 year APACT Contract. Now what I can say is that if your plan is to further yourself in the Navy by trying to go Officer or go to college as soon as possible, do this if they offer you super short contract like they did for me. I’m currently enrolled in Air Force ROTC pursuing a pilot slot once I commission. All in all everyone has a different reason for joining, so if you have a plan jump, but if not I don’t recommend doing this if you plan on staying on the enlisted side of the Navy for awhile with a good job. I planned on being a mustang because my Dad didn’t advise just commissioning because he knew I’d be a better Officer with prior enlisted experience.

@bigtenfootball3417 Every rate I wanted they was A school required , I got our went to University, enrolled in Air Force R.O.T.C and receive my commission as a Second Lieutenant ,Combat Control Officer. I left a Major. That Seaman Apprentice is a waste of potential and holds people back from reaching thier full potential. The Air Force treated me much better also . I wasted 3 years as deck seaman, could of been in college learning something useful other painting and moping etc. I'm not bad mouthing the Navy but get an A school or wait until is available. As a deck seaman you have no value to the Navy because they spent no money training you and will kick you out for the slightest infraction and many in deck division were not happy. Many could of went Marine Corp or Army Infantry and they would of been given some respect because you are Combat soldier.
