- In its 47-year history, Starbucks has transformed from a single coffee bean store in Seattle to a 30,000 cafe international coffee power house. But massive expansion hasn't come without growing pains.
It's no secret that Starbucks has been struggling to get U.S. customers to frequent its cafes more often. While sales have been positive, the number of customer visits continues to stagnate.
Same-store sales, a key metric in the restaurant industry, have dwindled over the last 12 months as competition heated up and customers were uninspired by some of Starbucks' limited-time offerings. While comparable-store sales exceeded expectations in the fourth quarter that ended Sept. 30, rising 4 percent, much of that was due Starbucks charging more for its lattes.
Under the careful watch of Howard Schultz, Starbucks pursued a strategy of aggressive expansion in the late '80s and early '90s. By the time the company went public in 1992, it had 165 stores.
Four years later, Starbucks opened its 1,000th location, including international cafes in Japan and Singapore. Growth was so rapid that, just two years later, Starbucks opened its 2,000th cafe.
While unit expansion helped boost sales throughout the last two decades - Starbucks has had positive same-store sales growth since 2010 - the company has now spread itself too thin.
With more than 14,000 locations in the United States alone today, Starbucks has cannibalized its own sales. The company is regrouping and rethinking its expansion. It is expected to shutter 150 underperforming locations in 2019, three times the amount it typically does.
Compounding its problems are changing consumer preferences, an issue CEO Kevin Johnson has addressed with investors. People are shying away from sugar-laden calorie bombs, which happen to be one of Starbucks' staples. In 2015, sales of Frappuccinos were 14 percent of Starbucks revenue. However, in the first half of 2018, Frappucino sales were down 3 percent - and accounted for only about 11 percent of the company's revenue.
Making matters worse, Frappuccino sales also were hurt by a lack of innovation, analysts said.

Howard Schultz is a really successful businessman, by this video's description, he sounds like the Steve Jobs of coffee, turning a coffee shop into a "Café experience" and charging a whole lot more for it.

I'm actually skeptical of this. How much of the recovery was really due to espresso training and fresh grinding of coffee beans? And how much was just the market recovering again? Schultz was bought back pretty much at the bottom of the dip, the stock market in general recovered quite quickly after 08
@@wdai03 He also re-trained staff on customer service, and shifted their focus to delivering the best service to their customers- not just esperesso drinks. It says so in the video

Except the fact that Howard Schultz sold the Seattle SuperSonics to Clay Bennett in 2006 and ultimately Bennett relocated the team to Oklahoma City and became the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008.

CNBC completely neglected the fact that Starbucks is not just a coffee business; it's a real-estate business. Look at all the property they own. Even if they closed down stores, those property values had probably shot up in the past 40 years.
I wonder how many they lease vs own. Fast food does this too.

I’m so glad to have found local cafes in my area. Those have been a game changer for me in the world of coffee. Coffee for me isn’t just a some caffeine drink that you dump cream and sugar into, it is an art as well as a science.

Peet's Coffee is locally roasted. Each pack is marked with the roasting date. I don't buy coffee that was sitting on the shelf for more than two weeks after roasting. It makes a huge difference in the taste.
My Mother goes to Starbucks everyday. She loves that place. People are just addicted to it for some reason.

I've only been to Starbucks once and that was because my dad wanted to try it, I thought it was a random tea and coffee shop at first lol
I make my own coffee at home now. It's cheaper and faster than going to Starbucks every morning. I only go to Starbucks in the morning, if I run out of coffee at home, but I have to account for more time to get to the office.
Exactly and that's what's killing Starbucks there's so much good micro brand coffees out there like Invader coffee or Black Rifle coffee and even companies that weren't available to the masses like Community Coffee which is a Louisiana coffee. It starts it used to be if you want to Coffee you had to go to a diner or a store of some kind and then instant coffee and canned coffee came available and everyone just started making it home now the trend is repeating itself and there are better coffees than what you can get at Starbucks or really any coffee store that you can Brew right in your home and that's what people are doing I myself love the fact that I can experiment in my own home at a fraction of the cost that I have to pay a store like Starbucks. Much like the beer industry where micro breweries are taking over and killing sales like the giant Budweiser. The coffee industry is following suit.
Over a long period it adds up to a lot of money which can be better used for investments and leading a comfortable life instead of worrying about the next pay check. Same goes for unreasonably expensive cars , watches and Iphones. And people have this unreasonable thought process that everyone is looking at them and judging their lifestyle when nobody really cares. There is no better feeling than waking up in the morning and knowing even if you get fired youll be just alright

I am a former SB Barista and I have been making my own cafe Espresso drinks for years with my Delonghi Espresso Machine.
When I travel, I do try to find a local mom & pop coffee ☕ house. My SB app has $$$ on it since my friends gives me SB Gift cards

Actually, in Asian countries, Starbucks started a plan to make us love it even more. As early as 2004, Starbucks has brought their trademark planners in Singapore, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Yes, Starbucks Planners existed. All you need is to collect 18 stickers (1 drink = 1 sticker) to have a planner or a travel organizer journal.
Thank you for the video, guys. I am in love with the concept of Starbucks. Earlier I was thinking that the coffee is overpriced but apparently after comparing with other coffee shops I figured out that the price includes not only a HUGE cup of delicious coffee but at the same time the rent of the table and chair where you may stay for 3-5 hours and no one will tell you a word. As I freelancer, I am choosing Starbucks for the atmosphere!
In addition to that, I've read a book called " How Starbucks Fought for Its Life without Losing Its Soul". I highly recommend it to everyone! It's a remarkable story, revealing how, during one of the most tumultuous economic periods in American history, Starbucks again achieved profitability and sustainability without sacrificing humanity.

coffee has been such a part of life and culture that it makes perfect sense Howard Schultz is a genius.
All your videos are good. It shows the sales growth. It would be great if you can add the net profit over the years which would show the exact growth.
Food for thought: I find it difficult to criticize Starbucks because they are more generous to their employees than most any other comparable company I personally know of. Plus, their employees do not seem overly stressed. In fact the opposite, they appear to have fun & enjoy their job while at the same time they do a great job. Starbucks trains all of their employees well so that they take pride in their product & feel good about being able to do their job well. In addition, they offer an above average pay scale with benefits that very few if any other companies offer such as: medical, dental & more that I can't recall at the moment. But, the best benefit is free college through the highly rated online Arizona State College. I think Starbucks is giving back big time & it is a great opportunity for many people who might not be able to go to college otherwise. I have asked many of the employees all across the country about their job satisfaction & I plan to take a more serious poll regarding how many are now or plan to take advantage of the college option, but so far, quite a few are using that benefit.

It sounds nice to drink and support local cafes, but they're about as expensive, if not more expensive than a Starbucks. Also, unlike local cafes where if one closes then you're out luck, if a Starbucks closes, you always know there will be one within a reasonable distance.

Nicholas L Starbucks grow their own beans though. They have several farms across the globe as well. Other local coffee shops also purchase their whole beans from starbucks too just branded differently

Great overview of the growth of Starbucks Cafe. I was privileged to have visited the Oldest Starbucks in Seattle, WA near the fish market. Great legacy there. I salute.
I personally think Starbucks is gross; the coffee beans are over-roasted, so it tastes super bitter and not pleasant at all. Their specialty drinks are often just a bunch of high sugary syrups; not an authentic coffee experience by any means. With that being said, you've gotta respect what they've done as a company and brand over the past few decades, and they generally provide good customer service, which I can't say about some other chains. I *will* stop by on occasion for their to-go protein boxes when I'm in a rush.

There are medium roasted and blonde coffee as well, for those who don't care for the bitterness. But better yet, it is best when you customize it - ie. Tall Vanilla Bean Frappuccino with 1 shot of Espresso in a Grande cup!

@@ChrisGuiver Gloria Jean's Coffee is quite similar to Starbucks. I think Starbucks gets a bad rap, and for the most part you'll be getting a nice cup of coffee. Is it the best? Definitely, not! However, I'll take Starbucks over most nation wide chains. I hate buying a cup of coffee and not feeling anything (I.e. Dunkin Donuts or that random lil cafe). I think Stabucks made a few mistakes in the Australian marketplace and forgot to factor other variables. Big mistake was Starbucks expanding too fast. They should have just opened a Starbucks in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth to start. And place it in a strategic part of town (business center). Australians have access to lots of good coffee from Indonesia, and that country very well might produce the best coffee (I lean towards Sana, Yemen). So most regular cafes will probably have really nice fresh coffee. Finally, price is a big factor. At times Starbucks is just too overpriced.
In the end, Starbucks is solid (overrated for sure...but most people dont care for the "best" coffee. People tend to buy for convenience, familiarity, and on some level socially). I think if they offered more affordable options on the menu people would be happier with Starbucks.
My favorite coffee brands are Peets, Kicking Horse, and Death Wish (love deathwish just a little expensive). Also on the organic side (I like organic things mainly for taste). Any recommendations for other coffee brands?

I work for Starbucks and after 3 hours into my shift we did a register check and it was slow and I sold over $600 worth of product imagine this times the crazy number of stores and if other stores were busier and you are making money

Nope. One local bakery who is their contractor suddenly became famous when people found out they are supplying the bannoffee pie on our local Starbucks. You’ll know when something is frozen lol. Their pastries and breads line up actually became impressive recently.

@@Raiya_ru17 If your Starbucks is serving a pie, it's a independent store. Basically, it doesn't have the same connection to corporate. There's almost no independent Starbucks, almost all of them are corporate.
I also work at a corporate Starbucks. Our paninis are frozen, and if yours sells the same paninis as corporate locations, it's also frozen. They are still good, I eat them (usually for free tho) but like...they absolutely arrive at our store frozen.

Got to love CNBC. Starbucks rarely dominates any market outside the USA. It doesnt in most of Europe, certainly not Australia or New Zealand. In fact in Australia they had to shut many stores as you can get better made and roasted and cheaper coffee in pretty much every cafe in the country.
Thank God it doesn´t! It would be so boring with Starbucks everywhere! I mean, yes, as business it is incredible, but the variety offered to a customer seems to be lacking more and more with all these big companies everywhere.... I love coffee and I buy it from a small company in my country and to be honest when I compare the taste of both... Starbucks is nothing but a trend from the US when everyone is carrying a huge cup of coffee with them on their way to work but it has nothing to do with ENJOYING the coffee... mostly when it´s a huge cup full of milk and sugar....

I've been to Starbucks once and I was a teen back then. My mom didn't allow me to drink coffee so I bought a pastry. It was the best pastry I've ever had. Idk much about coffee stuff but the cake was amazing.

In Malaysia, I did say the coffee is sold at a very high price that only rich people can afford as one cup of Starbucks coffee ranges from RM16 to RM22. As a Malaysian, us getting coffee made by ordinary people is fine enough as it costs around RM2.50, which is ten times lower than the price sold in Starbucks. From my pov, I did say Malaysians tend to drink Starbucks due to their variation of coffee and social status of drinking better expensive coffee.
I'm Malaysian and i drink starbucks every week cus i love it and im not rich at all. It's just if you can spend your money well then u can buy it
The quality is consistent
I've only had their coffee twice or so. It's too dark and burnt for my taste. I prefer Caribou coffee.
There are 7 SBX in my neighborhood that I frequent. I don't think I go to any one of them more than 25% of the time. It depends on mood (inside or outside), friendliness (small table or a large shareable table with 6 - 10 people). or other errands (N, S, E, or W), parking lot size and convenience, or working intent (work 4 hours or drive through)? Where I used to live we only had 1 SBX and 12+ independent shops within 8 blocks. I never went to the SBX because their coffee is the worst. You have to add a lot of half/half and brown sugar. At other coffee shops you can actually drink the coffee black like a fine wine. SBX is for WiFi and "dessert coffee."
Wifi and filtered water for your bottle, bathrooms is about all it's good for.

If the market has taught me anything, it's that it usually makes a comeback, but I can't seem to concentrate on the long term, especially because important things like my retirement and my reserve are having a disastrous impact on inflation. I need a solution and a data trajectory that I can trust as soon as it is practicable.
@@AnnieBeischel Currently, the best market strategy is to work with a credible investing coach. Since a while ago, I've been in touch with a coach, mostly because I lack the depth of understanding and mental toughness to deal with the ongoing market conditions. You lack the information necessary to succeed in a competitive market, not because you're doing anything wrong, but rather because of your lack of experience.
In fact, I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to mention this, but I'd advise looking up "Stacy Lee Decker" because she was a big deal in 2020. She oversees both my portfolio and serves as my mentor

at my university there's 3 starbucks stores on campus (2 actual stores and a truck) and then theres at least 5 more within a 5 mile radius of the campus lol its madness
Because people is stupid and drink coffee because is cool. They don't like coffee actually, it's cool to be seen with that 10L bucket o sirrup , milk, sugar and 30 ml coffee in it.
nope, coffee tastes really good. And what you described isnt coffee, it's an American abomination. Most people just have coffee with milk or not even with milk, none of this sugar and syrup flavouring crap

@@MrDylsha My coffees from Starbucks always have to have 2-4 bags of sugar 2 milks and 2 creams otherwise I can't stand it. I don't understand how people can stand to drink black coffee that is what I call yuck. But Starbucks mostly doesn't have that which is good and handy for me.

Starbucks were basically everywhere in London leading up to the 2010 until nearly every store I can think of started closing down. I sure at least 50% of its stores it once had to be closed.
Meanwhile in that same period Costa Coffee had been expanding aggressively both at home in the UK and abroad. The ‘08 crash and over-saturation I doubt had much to do with it, otherwise Costa would have suffered the same fate.
