This song is about her mother, who is suffering from alzheimers... she mentioned how her mother would often loose track of time as her memory faded and would often ask her children "are you mine?" There is an interview from 2009 on the internet where you can find the quote. The song has a really touching and personal meaning when you put the pieces together.
Kim and Kelley: I have waited a minute to say the right thing. I had the pleasure of speaking to your mom at your 2001 show at the Congress Theatre in Chicago when she mentioned she was was "the breeder of The Breeders" My eyes tear. I sat in the back of the theater for about two minutes and chatted with her. She gave me a hug I have to say I have only felt an absolute earthquake of love and pride from only a handful of people in my life. Your mom was without doubt at the top of that list. Best wishes, AC
kim deal is a super star of indie music. with a strong back catalogue of recording behind her you can dip into any of her material from any time period and find absolute gems. these gems can range from cool as fuck indie rocker songs to something than can be achingly beautiful, timeless and precious . the above mentioned song I think is another glowing example of that .
This song always takes me back to a specific time and place; an unusually frigid winter, which was only granted levity, mostly in retrospect, through finding great songs like this and one or two good friends. Strange as it seems, I often want to go back to that time and place, but I can always listen to this song, and I'm pretty much there.
Saw Pixies in Moorhead, MN last night. Great, but not the same w.o. Kim. Love everything you do, Kim. Thank you for this beautiful song! You are a good daughter and a beautiful human being for the care you have repaid the generation before us. Bless you.
Thanks Kim and everyone involved here. This is very special. If i had to listen to it without knowing what it's about, i'd say it sounds like truth, even if i don't know what the truth is. Maybe it's the emotion coming through. I don't know how many takes you did but it sounds like the very first one. And listening to it knowing the story behind it, well... It's achieving what Reed's heroin did when conveying the emotional aspect of an experience. When you know about it, the song hits you hard.
It's great that Kim is still making beautiful music. her quiet songs are my favorites. lullabies like likkle more, are you mine, beautiful moon. and with the breeders: pinnacle hollow, off you, and others. And her rockers too, cannonball, huffer, saints, divine hammer, and more. i like when she does those cover songs too, like Archangel Thunderbird, which are very hard to try and cover with only a 4 people band
As a musician,(oh boy here we go)......How should i put this!!!! I love the creation process(what notes should be played here or what melody should i do here) that goes into the work not the necessarily the work itself. I will forever love Kim and Kelly's work because i love the sounds they create together!. Of course there body of works are amazing too. But its more than about hits and money!!! These are only to help others to know your music exist!
Kim Deal is one of the most important persons in music history lately. Fuck all those Ladies and Gagas and whatever.. if she had balls she would have been a Mozart and I'm drunk right now.
Still years later but... You don't need to put Lady Gaga down to raise Kim up, they're both talented artists I guess you just aren't into avant garde pop...
Maybe she'll rejoin Pixies when they are finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and perform live. It's such crap when Nirvana is inducted as soon as they became eligible and Pxies have not even been on the ballot sheet yet (imagine how 'Nevermind' would've sounded if there were no Surfer Rosa or Doolittle)? Time to start petitioning for Pixies R&R HoF!!
She's happier there so i guess things could be worse. It's always worse on the family than the patient. Not very comforting, but still. She's happy than I've ever seen her in my life.
He's not saying the pixies are worse because Kim left at all. He's just comparing the two. One can be better than the other without "throwing the band under the bus". You can make an impartial decision and like Kim's new work more, doesn't mean you now hate The Pixies.
So wait a minute---SHE CHOOSES to leave---and all of the sudden THEY suck because they decided to move on WITHOUT her?! She WASN'T the whole band, you know---just a PART of it. If they decide to go on without her...their choice. I think it sucks that people like you throw the band under the bus because they decided to make new music without her. I'm bummed Kim left---but just because she isn't there, doesn't mean The Pixies die---just remember who wrote most the songs for that band--NOT Kim.
Stick to the solos chuck. Quit this pixies muck..... Kim u are right to boycott pixies. The new album is sabotage. Long live nostalgia. It's violets fault for I can hear this grand duchy influence all over there album.
Well lets fixate on Herman Brood, if youre Frank Black. Capitalize on someone elses miserable life. Yet glorify it at the same time.(alcohol and speed were friends?) And make some bucks, because youre out of ideas and creativity. Im sure you have Herman Brood Originals hanging in your living room Chuck. Or stashed away with the original twinkies. ( do they smell like piss?)A few chords and cha ching! Just keep getting fatter. Long live Grand Duchy!!! Or is is Grand Duchebag?
Wauw, just wauw. I guess you're not from the Netherlands? Frank did not capitalize, he was honouring Herman Brood with a tribute album. Yes he made poor choices, yes he was a dopehead, but he also left an enormous legacy as an multi diciplinair artist. From his early years with cuby and the blizzards till he chose to jump of the hilton in Amsterdam. He was so much more than his media personality, he was a pure honoust artist who made a lot of stupid decisions throughout his life but still created so much great art! And no, i have no originals hanging on my wall, but i will never underestimate his unique personality, his music, his art and his legacy. The world will never have a second frank black an also never a second herman brood.
This is OK at best...no one would even listen to this all the way through if it didnt have kims name attatched..shes really mellowed out in her old age.....not horrible but not great.
Just stumbled upon this gem. I'm not a huge Pixie fan, but I like some of their music. Nirvana definitely got a lot of their style from the Pixies, no doubt! I don't remember Kim doing anything this soft and beautiful; her voice is so lovely here. I hope she makes more songs like this, I know now it's about her mother's struggle with Alzheimer's, but if you listen, it seems like it could encompass other mental frailties that we as humans can suffer or succumb to. I hope to hear other music like this! If there are any other songs Kim has done like this, someone please enlighten me. gorgeous song!!! Thanks Kim!!!!!

Fuck...After reading your comment, the song felt like the saddest thing ever.
:( Damnit It's still lovely in a way, but I feel like Eeyore now.

Kim knows how to make music intimate. Her sensibility touches everything she has been a part of.

Kim Deal is the coolest, most badassed lady in rock. I fucking love her!

Such a sad song. I love Kim Deal!
I came across this at 1.40 in the morning because I can't sleep. What a perfect song to find.
Lewis ito 5 year later, in the same situation , at the exact same time; it’s my turn to discover this. What a strange life

Thank you Kim for this beautiful song about Alzheimer.
Thanks Kim and everyone involved here. This is very special.

Kim Deal is one of the most important persons in music history lately. Fuck all those Ladies and Gagas and whatever.. if she had balls she would have been a Mozart and I'm drunk right now.
well said. im drunk too.
gzuf I'm dead sober and everything you said is true.
I'm on kratom and gabapentin years later and I agree as well!
Still years later but... You don't need to put Lady Gaga down to raise Kim up, they're both talented artists I guess you just aren't into avant garde pop...

This song is a shot on the target about alzheimer. There will be no better song than this about alzheimer.
it reminds me of Marceline's song "I remember you" from adventure time
Are you kidding? So fucking cool!
I'm 56 years old and my mother doesn't remember me either.
I quit a really good job because I thought I would be able to keep her out of a nursing home.
I was wrong wrong wrong very wrong
She's happier there so i guess things could be worse. It's always worse on the family than the patient. Not very comforting, but still. She's happy than I've ever seen her in my life.

Very different from the pixies, but very good.
I heard this from a movie a couple years back but I just can't recall what movie it was. Anybody??
This was shot by Kurt Ralske. He was UVS founder and Kim was in one of his song from 90's as singer.

Made the mistake of downloading the recent Peel Sessions and realized the Pixies are shit without Deal--they need to retire and start new projects
:-)

I want gay marriage to be legalized in my state so I can marry her if she comes through on tour. I'm straight, btw. This song is beautiful.
I'm straight and would totally marry Kim too

Stick to the solos chuck. Quit this pixies muck..... Kim u are right to boycott pixies. The new album is sabotage. Long live nostalgia. It's violets fault for I can hear this grand duchy influence all over there album.

Sounds like a Julee Cruise wannabe. Not nearly as good though.
