Modern Errors on Capital Punishment

  • In regard to the death penalty, one can only conclude that the present Magisterium…that is the present, modern teaching authority of the Church which has not attended to the Magisterium of past ages…is in a state of discontinuity or rupture with Tradition. The present teaching of modern popes and bishops is at least highly ambiguous, or unsound, or dubious, or even erroneous. As Fr. Kevin Flannery, a one time consulter to the Sacred Congregation of the Faith, stated: The realm of human affairs is a messy one, full of at least apparent inconsistency and incoherence, and the recent teaching of the Catholic Church on capital punishment-vitiated (corrupted)…by errors of historical fact and interpretation-is no exception. And such confusion and error is not unheard of. As the Church has stated in the past, it could happen that some non-infallible Magisterial documents might have a few deficiencies that will eventually be corrected by the Church. But we must ask why this untraditional view on the death penalty entered into the Church? What worldly ideas have badly influenced the present Magisterium?

Great Sermon. I know a lot of modernist thinking people like to use the argument against the death penalty regarding people falsely accused of crimes and executed for them. As a result of that thought, criminals will spend years rotting in prison waiting to die, which for me is a far worst punishment than being executed shortly after sentencing. Only a small fraction are actually innocent of there crimes. Even if I was innocent and I was on death row, at least I would be given a chance that most people don't, and that's the date of your death. Knowing that, it is an opportunity to set your affairs in order and prepare you soul for death. Many in life either put it off or never have the chance.

Great things in this homily. It remembers me that I do not understand the teachings on "let the one without sin, throw the first stone...no one condemned you? Neither do I." Since, after the execution of death penalty it is not possible to honestly say "Go, henceforth sin no more" the meaning is not clear.

Jesus was against the mob justice of the crowd attempting to stone the woman. He put up no fight against the proper authority of Pilot and the Pharisees during His crucifixion. Though it was a bad judgement to have Him executed, it was still a valid judgement through legitimate means.

In our consideration of capital Punishment, we ought not lose sight of what Athanasius said of the connection between sin and death. Sin is a turning against God, who is the source of all existence and life. So in turning against Him we begin to move away from life itself and thus towards death. Therefore, those condemned to death for their crimes are not condemned merely by the technicality of their infraction in the eyes of the State, but by metaphysics itself, as are we all lest we repent and make reparations. For those most severe of crimes, the only reparation is death, in which those of us who seek a clean soul must unite this and all reparations to the suffering of Christ, the ultimate innocent condemned to die at the hands of a corrupt State and by the demand of an inconsolable crowd. Thus, if the state judges us wrongly, we may know that God will judge rightly in the end, and accept our sufferings for the sins we have certainly committed in unity with the sufferings of our Lord.

Death sentence is a blessing for the convicted as it gives them a sure date of their death, which can helps them change their hearts to God and seek repentance and grace. Ordinary people have no idea of when they will perish in this life.

    From the Gospel of Matthew:
22:1 And Jesus answering, spoke again in parables to them, saying:
22:2 The kingdom of heaven is likened to a king who made a marriage for his son.
22:3 And he sent his servants to call them that were invited to the marriage: and they would not come.
22:4 Again he sent other servants, saying: Tell them that were invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my beeves and fatlings are killed, and all things are ready. Come ye to the marriage.
22:5 But they neglected and went their ways, one to his farm and another to his merchandise.
22:6 And the rest laid hands on his servants and, having treated them contumeliously, put them to death.
22:7 But when the king had heard of it, he was angry: and sending his armies, he destroyed those murderers and burnt their city.
22:8 Then he saith to his servants: The marriage indeed is ready; but they that were invited were not worthy.
22:9 Go ye therefore into the highways; and as many as you shall find, call to the marriage.
22:10 And his servants going forth into the ways, gathered together all that they found, both bad and good: and the marriage was filled with guests.
22:11 And the king went in to see the guests: and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment.
22:12 And he saith to him: Friend, how camest thou in hither not having on a wedding garment? But he was silent.
22:13 Then the king said to the waiters: Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the exterior darkness. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

Did St. Paul, when Saul, participated in the killing of Christians? The murderer of St. Maria Goretti was sent to jail for awhile, but he was not put to death, later released and helped with the beatification of St. Maria Gotetti.

Neither St Maria nor Our Lord have pronounced in revelation on the justice or injustice of Alessandro not being executed. However, one may easily infer that a long prison sentence of forced labour (he was already used to that) to go back to his cell and do as he wished (I won't say what, not meaning to be crass), were not sufficient incentive for him to repent. For many years he did not. Had execution been the more immediate outcome of his murderous act, then he may have repented earlier. It is a testament of grace that St Maria's intercession overcome the feebleness of our justice system.

How can father preach contrary to the magesterium? He has convinced me to the contrary. Executing someone will not save live once the murderer is in custody and punishment, an "eye for an eye" is done for emotional satisfaction, not justice.

Father is basically saying 3 important thing for everyone to realize. 1stly it is already doctrine by way of the Universal and Ordinary Magesterium that the DP is a valid non immoral option for the proper authorities. 2ndly No Pope has authority to go contrary to this. Also authentic development does not contradict prior teaching

It depends, we should judge situations based off intent/motive, circumstances, mental health, and many other factors. Good judgements are rarely cut and dry, black and white; it's a very nuanced thing that should be carefully and prayerfully examined.

Innocent life murdered in the womb. That's black and white. I obviously stand with JP 2 and his statements in 1992 on capital punishment. Pope Francis is just reinforcing what has already been said. I do respect father's points in his homily, but I disagree on his conclusion.

    • @-GodIsMyJudge-
      @-GodIsMyJudge- Год назад +1

@@ryanofsantanvalley4220 I'm saying that a person who is remorseful, that seeks God's forgiveness, is in a different situation than someone who vehemently rejects it (knowing full well the consequences). Which obviously isn't every situation but certainly some of them. Even still, such a person knows the consequences and still decides to break the law and deprive others of their right to life - so their punishment would be just. Just as the repentant man who was crucified next to Jesus knew that his sentence was just.
Also, I think that you aren't thinking your statement through very well... What if a woman has a health condition where both her life and the child's are in jeopardy? Is it still so evil for her to have abortions? If she didn't the child would still die either way, and so would she! So yes I stand by what I said that it isn't *always* so black and white

Priest, to certain souls in certain prisons, death would be preferable. However I think the prison ministry may be able to heal and redeem lost souls as Sister Prejean I think demonstrates. Loss of physical freedom keeps souls with wolf like behaviors from Gods sheep even the non violent black sheep. This in turn allows a dark soul, to light in the humane, not luxurious prisons aka loss of freedom, but not buried alive situations, it allows our Christian Brothers and Sisters to overcome evil with Good God.

Prejean has contempt for the victims, her sympthies are with the convicted, read about the victims suffering , did they get a chance for redemption ?, how about the condition of thier souls ? Fear not kindness restrains the wicked, take a look at some crime scene photos for perspective, the excuses offered for the crimes of these excretia is always sickening and offensive.

This priest is in violation of donum veritatis and he owes religious submission of intellect and will to the Pope’s teaching on Inadmissiblity of execution and dignity of the human person. Also the early church never taught the death penalty was for retribution or punishment but primarily for the protection of society. The priest here also does not provide any citation for this retributive justice theory.
