The Dwarves don't live underground, that was just racist rhetoric from the Island Lord. They aren't like the Orcs who lost all their land and were driven out, the Dwarves are still a major political power in the world. That's why Senshi "not being from the surface" was such a disturbing notion to Chilchuck, because it WOULD be very strange.
So... After a catastrophe, he decided to restrict all technological progress and retain the world in a state without progress just to prevent it from being repeated instead of learning from those mistakes and following the natural advancement of every thinking race?
That wasn't the smartest decision I've ever heard.
Chilchuck lowkey caring for Laios, Marcille and Itsuzumi like a father will never be not funny lol
He's very mature for his age
It's a joke...
@@Mettrop_2nd Otta...
@@doctorrocks Otta got a point though, albeit the horrendous crimes in her business, she is one of the few elves who doesn’t infantilize short life races. And most of the women she dated were around 18-40 years old while she was around 17-22 if you convert their age to tall man’s numbers.
@@Huhu0137Otta becomes even funnier if you imagine that the half-foots break up with her, not the other way around. They’re trying to pay off their mortgage and Otta is still partying in clubs. Difference of maturity.
@@whiskeredwolf4861 yeah, that would explain why she is so embarrassed by Lycion’s joke lol
I think what's most interesting about Dungeon Meshi is that people forget this show isn't about a group of friends entering and exploring a dungeon, but a group of strangers and acquaintance at best now learning to come together through similar experiences despite having different goals, and this episode really reminds you of that. The only two who know each other best here is Laios and Marcille, and that's only through their link with Falin. A core Dungeon Meshi theme is "bringing people together with food" and I think Dungeon Meshi accomplishes that almost perfectly in every single way throughout.
Fun-Fact: The official manga translations for DM mistranslated Thistle as Sissel even though the Adventurer's Guide spells him as Thistle in english characters. He's named Thistle after a flower that exists IRL, so it's not meant to be vague or anything.
Anyway, a few months ago, Netflix anounced Thistle as "Sissel" on their social medias, but they got ratio'd so fucking hard that apparently between then and now, they reverted to Thistle.
This episode marks a victory for the manga readers in a years-long battle!
the way they say his name in japanes kinda sounds like Cicero
I noticed that too, I wish we had proof that it got changed due to the backlash because it's likely true and that would be so funny
I love how marcille just cut a chunk of her hair off like that, just to save senshi
it speaks volumes as to how much he means to her, even though they spent a relatively short amount of time together... and we know that because of how she said that hair is very important for doing magic :)
9:29 It was not obvious since Senshi said that he lived in that dungeon for 10 years, not his entire life, since dwarves live hundreds of years, they thought that Senshi had already seen the surface before, but it seems that his entire life was underground.
We know that Senshi has been to the surface because he said he goes up there to buy spices and other ingredients and supplies he can't harvest from the dungeon. He was in favor of heading back to the surface after they lost Falin, and he didn't freak-out or anything when they saw what looked like the surface when they met the original castle inhabitants, so I think it's safe to say he has been up-top before.
@@Snes_Controller yes yes, We know that now he can return to the surface whenever he wants, but he doesn't want to do it or he does it rarely because he stays to guard the dungeon. What Chilchuck is referring to is that he did not grow up on the surface and does not fully know what is there, they thought that Senshi had a normal life before arriving in the dungeon but he was really isolated
It's ok to cry for the skyfish. It was truly the best character
That shot of marcille chilchuck and izu all sleeping together is my new favorite thing. Family
truly a girl dad
@@rpaintegg fr
Chilchuck having a family is either a wtf moment or something we subconsciously know because anyone who has any knowledge of them can't help buy spoil it because yeah it is pretty funny.
yup, spoiled for me from basically day one lol. Manga readers are obnoxious for every series.
@@Henrique-wv9xq loud* manga readers. obviously there are manga readers that keep to themselves.
Using animal meat for resurrections is normal, and dead goats and pigs are what are normally used. Marcille explains in episode 12 that double the amount of calories are required to replace whatever was lost. It's also why, in other instances where characters have been resurrected, they try not to move bodies around too much to preserve as much blood as possible. In episode 15, Marcille states that the ancient magic she specifically uses allows her to draw upon an infinite energy source. In the case of resurrecting Falin, revivification isn't Marcille's specialty, and Falin's body was so far gone that she needed more power than she has access to to successfully revive Falin.
Baby Senshi looks like Steven Universe.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that
Thats rude
Had the same thought and I was like “noooo” lmfao
He...

GEMS!
Finally someone else, I'm not crazy
16:44 I just realize in the flashback that the red beard dwarf is wearing senshi’s helmet 😮
It's because.....
Meat is used in normal resurrection magic marcille is not using black magic
good pfp.
Half-foot trivia: Chilchuck’s name is actually his a combination of his first name(Chil) and middle name(Chuck). His last name comes from his father’s first name, Tim, and combining it with the suffix -s. So his daughter’s last name would be Chils, by Half-foot culture.
Marcille's reluctance to explain the secret ingredient used to create golem cores in a previous episode is explained here, with her using her hair to summon a familiar.
It's heavily implied that for golems you need to use something more intimate.
In the Adventurer Guide, Golems are made from human bone meal and Fairies are made using semen.
i dont think delgal ever specifically asked thistle to study dark magic, its just that when thistle was learning magic he was reading books from different cultures and so yaad hypothesized that some dark magic books snuck their way in there on accident somehow
In cryptozoology and ufology, "rods" (also known as "skyfish", "air rods", or "solar entities") are elongated visual artifacts appearing in photographic images and video recordings. Most optical analysis to date have concluded that the images are insects moving across the frame as the photo is being captured.
According to wikipedia
We saw an example of a fairy last episode with the elves. The little fairy that is flying around is a crafted familiar.
The Dwarves don’t live underground they’re the dominate geopolitical power in the world alongside the Elves
Chilchuck Being married with kids just makes the scene of Senshi giving him "the talk" even more funny in retrospective.
Laios you could've cooked the griffin instead and let marcille mourn her skyfish for a few days. You just wanna get back at her for not letting u have your giga double-headed dragon aren't you!
I'm sure he just did not think twice before he cooked it. You know, he is Laios. He's emotionally dumb but has no bad intentions.
@@YijieSong Ofc, i was jesting :p
Oh don't worry they're going to cook it 😀
Processing a carcass for eating is different from just killing it
The Sky Fish and Chips reminds me of cordon bleu, meat wrapped around cheese and fillings and fried. The ones I tried were ham and cheese wrapped with fried chicken breast, very tasty.
It makes sense that Delgal wanted thistle to study magic because we saw in the living painting episode that Delgal's father was killed, and it traumatized them both. Thistle making everyone in the kingdom immortal sounds like a direct respond to that, and it also seems like a good reason why to study magic
I'm anime, so I'm not sure if this gets brought up later or if I'm even correct in my interpretation, but I think thistle mirros marcille somewhat, they're both elves surrounded by people they love with shorter lifespans I think the king dying heavily traumatized thistle just like how the death of marcille's father traumatized her, and we know that her biggest fear is people dying before her, I think thistle had the same fear and that's why he made everyone in the kingdom immortal
rare Record of Lodoss War appreciator! You're close that it's based on D&D - it is the adaption of a personal campaign that was recapped into magazines at the time. It got popular enough with readers to earn the OVAs!
Are the OVA's and TV series that he mentioned significantly different adaptations or sequels to each other? Should I just watch one and not the other?
Watch both, but they don’t really have anything to do with each other.
@@zephshoir They're set in the same homebrewed setting, just at different times and with different characters. I personally prefer the OVA, but the TV series is much more cohesive from a storytelling perspective (i.e., a structured narrative that modern D&D gamers might appreciate better. I just don't like Spark's party tbh)
If I had a nickel for each time skyfish appeared in an anime, I'd have two nickels.
Which is not a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
What's the other one?
@@emmittcarpenter1452 Likely Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean.
Unless there's a third anime with 'em.
@@BalrogQuote yeah, that's the one
what other show u thinking of, I can think of one piece
i was laughing tears when i saw marcille flopping on the ground like a fish xDDD
4:52 suddenly, memories of Sukuna's actions flowed into Izutsumi's mind.
Important but minor note: thistles eyes and the symbol on the book aren't an hourglass, its the infinity symbol
glad I wasn't the only one that thought of punpun when i saw those cute birds, I think it ruined cute bird things for me.
ポニョのTシャツ可愛い
Finally the episode where Chilchuck's revealed to have kids has aired. If only the obnoxious manga readers could have not commented about that sh*t in every video or clip where Chilchuck was even mentioned (tHiS mAn LiTteRalLy HaS a wIfE aNd KiDs hurr durr), it would have been a cool reveal. At least we're past it now.
personally, rather than Indoor Fish, the Skyfish reminded me of a cryptid called Rods, which infact, is also KNOWN as the sky fish. in the year 2000, on camera, weird stick-like creatures were recorded flying around on camera, and could only be seen through the camera lense, leading to the conclusion in research circles that it must be too fast for the naked human eye.
..and it was later discovered in 2006 that Rods are actually just an error with the photography equipment, and an illusion of the light. so, sadly, they're a very short lived cryptid. However, I'm fond of them! and I'm fairly sure they were the inspiration! though, I'm an anime only, so I'm sure some manga reader who's seen an 'extras page' from the chapters adapted that didn't make it into the anime will prove me wrong or something lol.
it took me a while to figure out and i dont think its a spoiler? because the information is already there. just in case, i will try to hide it, most of this is only my interpretation of events anywaysies
the ancient magic (forbidden in a sense that it's illegal and dark because it's stigmatized and secretive) that marcille uses is defined as such when she uses mana not from herself, but from the dimension of the infinite (as explained in the episode where she gets petrified) its kinda what the whole dungeon seems to be powered with and how thistle manipulates it?
with falins revival they essentially used the dungeon as a battery (temporarily) and what seems to have fucked her up was using the personal dragon of thistle for materials (its soul was bound to its flesh and thus they got mixed up)
so no i dont think she would need it to make familiars. we already have seen her use magic circles a bunch and the blood bubbling thing is what already happens with normal resurrection and healing
Senshi against a 20 ton red dragon: "I'm gonna fight it!"
Senshi against a 500 pound griffon: "Get me the fuck outta here!"
record of lodoss war is a dnd campaing 's "Live play" the what happened was published in a magazine, turned novel
5:53 bro came up with a racist stereotype on the spot that's actually really funny ngl
get well soon you guys
1:22 It is based on a manga
Un saludo al Barufis desde Irapuato
Watched the episode, fell asleep, woke up to you guys' reation to it
Skyfish (Rods) also appeared in JoJo 6.
good review!
Feel better soon!
10:12 Oh I see you are a man of culture as well
チョッパー帽子かわいい!
I too am on the Frieren/Marcille --> Deedlit pipeline of anime elf appreciation.
おやすみプンプンって海外でも知られてるんやな
I wonder if Senshi is still going to treat Chilchuck like a child, even after learning that he is a family man
The story is based solely on a manga. There is no other source material like a novel.
0:40 (spit take) what?! thank god ppl are reacting to that gem of the series. yeah RoLW creators did all the things that critical roll did 25 years before them. published stories, live play through radio, adaptation of said adventures then publish own source books set in that world. again all this in late 80s/early 90s. speaking of the trpg sourcebooks fans fully translated all the original books and posted them on discord. the rpg is called Sword World which lodoss war and other stories like rune soldier is set in. there is sword world 2e which if heard of record of grancrest war then its by same writer and grancrest war is in sword world 2e setting.
also english dub? ... eh. ngl i wont complain too much. of course original voice is better especially that era when englush dub is way more cheezier then today, but again thankful at least ppl watch and acknowledge lodoss war. especially most younger anime viewers in their 20s dont know or dont want to watch older media in that era.
overall one major request: pls if you can publically upload them onto youtube. the series needs love, even if only few thousands of views thats enough to spread notice of a classic anime. also kinda shove iti n critical roll fans face saying cr team is original on what they do which is wrong since again lodoss war beat them by 25ish years.
