I keep my focus on the simple things
Try to find some peace along the way
Wish I knew how long I’m supposed to wait
Holding on
But just barely
Got the feeling I’ve been talking to a dead, dead line
Always a reason
Let it change
Is there anyone there?
Listening while you cry, cry, cry?
Always a reason for the pain
I’m doing the things I’ve been told everyday
Then why does it feel like I’m moving in place?
Never had anything to prove
But never was anyone like you
All you fought through
All you had to face
Made you stronger, unafraid
Got the feeling I’ve been talking to a dead, dead line
Always a reason
Let it change
Is there anyone there?
Listening while you cry, cry, cry?
Always a reason for the pain
I’m doing the things I’ve been told everyday
Then why does it feel like I’m moving in place?
I gotta believe that you’re there
When I sing
Cause if you’re not real then I’m losing my head
Got the feeling I’ve been talking to a dead, dead line
Always a reason
Let it change
Is there anyone there?
Listening while you cry, cry, cry?
Always a reason for the pain
I’m doing the things I’ve been told everyday

Still criminally underrated.
lmao, dude, jimmy eat world has been criminally under rated for nearly 20 years. I literally own every album and have listened since the start and I twisted in and crawled at night wondering how they didn't make it super big.
and I absolutely cringe everytime I hear bleed america and the middle, cause god damn, their stuff is SOOOOO good and that's not even close to their best.
Jimmy Eat World is the best! But you need to listen to " Live Not Survive" by SLT! You are missing out !!!
Stating underrated is the most boring overrated comment. Please be better 🤪
@@maximumvalues No. I won't change myself to fit into your world view, fuck you. I will do worse. Spiting you will be my lives mission.
I like how when he says "Every day, every day, every day" the notes change with each one representing the time going by, but when he says "moving in place", each time the notes are the same like there's nothing changing - likes he's stuck in place. Gotta love multi-layered writing.
I feel like this song is about people with 9-to-5 jobs

It's called word painting, and I think it is super cool.

After listening to Jim talk about his creative process and him leaving alcohol and struggling with the idea that he feels unsure about himself when creating if he is not like in a bad place emotionally, I think I understand the lyrics better. Like he is expressing all that and how he tries staying 'mentally healthy' everyday and not drinking alcohol, and trying to kind of push himself in a positive state and change his mindset and not worry too much about the reception of his music if he is just enjoying himself. Don't worry, Jim, you are still a legend already no matter what.
Still writing killer songs after all these years. So impressive.
Agreed. He's always been to grade song writer
9щ9
I think this is the best music they've made in a long time - sign of a truly great band
I seriously can't stop watching, there is something so magnetic about it. The hypnotizing rhythm of the song itself, this minimalistic scene with extremely pleasing and odd character design, dead and at the same time kind of lost gaze of the cultist guys, the extremely lyrical Mad Max overlord, his makeup, the slight VHS effect on the video... I love this.
The aesthetic is more Dune than Mad Max, but yeah, the cult of personality leader seen in both settings.
Had never seen either so I couldn’t tell you the relevance of the theme but the song title “555” are angel numbers Change is a part of life, and when we see the number 555, something is telling you that a transition is in play in your life and all around you. Every change brings stress; it's part of being human.
Beautiful
@@joshuamuir6512 that's interesting. Im not sure what the lyrics are meant to convey but my first impression hearing them, it sounds almost like he's talking to god. But take that with a grain of salt. I have no idea what the song is about.
@@koalabear4884 well the artistic value he adds is simply amazing. Notice the only time he shows any form of emotion is when all of his followers were amassed in the end. I have to agree with you because the sense or experience I felt with the piece in the elements experiences and in the timeline showed. Almost as if it’s just a man pursuing his vision, no guarantees but learning your lessons on top of blessings. We often get out through crap in our life to prepare us for the next hurdle of crap lol. staying vigilant in his beliefs and continuing to build - whatever that may be obviously amassing an cult as they were slowly multiplying in numbers. Now the track title “555” or angel numbers translating to basically the word “change”
Can’t help but make me feel as though he were plotting a takeover of some kind. A massive change was about to occur because again the only time he showed any real lovely emotion is when his task seemed to be complete and he reveled in the moment for all but one second.
But again his intent isn’t depicted in the video it’s our perspective that paints the story. Great video great use of the angelic language that very few are even aware of lol.
I have been listening Jimmy Eat World for approximately 20 years now - seems like a lot - and I can clearly say that this is one of my favourite songs from all. Jim does a perfect job in this and I really appreciate the band’s efforts to still be active and producing quality music - keep up the good work guys. 👍🏻

Always baffles me when people lament songs not being (even more) popular. Why would you want your hidden gem associated with... _those?_
@HadzabadZa great art deserves to be experienced by as many a conscious mind as possible.
(Quoted: ) .... "a really cool explanation of the song title '555'. It's about how movies and tv shows and games use the '555' area code for fake phone numbers because that area code doesn't exist. So if you call the number, it doesn't take you anywhere. It's reflective of having prayers (or phonecalls) that go unanswered by the universe. A dark song, he says."
For me, a matter of interpretation where I've typically still seen light where others claim they can't see it or are enveloped by darkness. Seeing that light is not always a subscription, though, easily prescribed to in others. It seems upon that precipice in which it proves to be a careful exploration taking place which one may want to avoid blurring of your boundaries by others if what one is highlighting as an opportunity for a brighter perspective and exercise on the approach beginning with a reappraisal mechanism exercise that, dangerously to themselves and others, is mistaken by others who have confirmation bias potentially working to silence and/or smear you for having said ~counters to their life prognosis/subscriptions and prescriptions.
555 is also used in Thailand. It is their version of hahaha or lol.
555 is the number of humans in The Bible.
@@michaelwatson1390 ,
Yep. I didn't editorialize the quote I copied & pasted. It's the telephone prefix for phone numbers (and not the area code) used in script writing.
Hm. Reading that '444' is often a reference used to represent angels or guardian angels?....

When he takes off the glasses and you get the full scope of his emotions it is incredible how much pain you can see and feel coming out of him.
yes that part is very striking, it also shows how modified he is by showing his eyes as an unnatural color, like he has modified his soul to an extent, its really very good the more I watch it

Used to listen to Jimmy Eat World as a teen. Now I’m a father, and my 7 year old loves this song! Too cool
I'm a dad too now, and my son has been listening a lot of the old songs I used to listen to. I haven't introduced him to Jimmy Eat World yet. I guess he's ready.

P.S. this isn't related to the comment or anything but I just tried typing this band's name as an acronym and that didn't go well 😂
I also have a 7 year old and he walked on me once playing this song on You Tube. He asked „ what song is that?“ i said „my new favorite.“ then he answered „cool song!“ and sat with me til the video was over.

The only Jimmy Eat World song I've heard that isn't unremarkable, throw-away background pop.
That this song and this music video exist together feels like one of those beautiful flukes in the universe.
completely agree. they are meant for eachother
I work security at a music venue, and a few months ago during a show a fight broke out and I was assaulted, and I ended up falling head-first down a flight of stairs, where I suffered a concussion, multiple skull fractures and missing teeth, hearing loss and a torn rotator cuff. As someone who suffers daily from depression and anxiety, this incident is not at all what I needed. I had a lot of downtime during my recuperation. This video was released around the time of the incident, and it caught my intrigue through suggested videos one day. I'm glad I watched it. This song describes exactly how I felt in the midst of rehabilitation and dr appointments and all the physical and mental pain, and this song helped me not only cope with my temporarily poor mental condition, but it also helped bring me back to 100%. The visuals in this video are astounding and surreal, the sound and vibe of the song along with the lyrics are powerfully uplifting and the message is strong. Thanks so much for helping me get back to where I need to be. I won't forget it. Well done.

I like some alternative too. I can get into almost anything that could fit into the rock & metal sound spectrum. I hate that crazy ass metal where they have trash vocalists who do nothing but do their best imitation of Satan or other some kinda creature! Just non stop demonic sounding screaming vocals that are not audible and you can't understand None of the lyrics... Trash music and I hate it. Senkimone Same :)
Same!
My love for Jimmy goes way back, but this song is their best by far. I never get tired of it.
Love it, for those of you that don’t know “555” are a set of angel numbers which means change. Sometimes when the universe or god is trying to get your attention you’ll notice sets of repeating numbers all over the place. It’s crazy because it’s almost unreal but when you have faith and trust delving into the great unknown it’s odd to say it but everything just slips into place naturally. Truth is no matter how much we fight or resist, change is inevitable. What’s will be is going to be no matter the amount of straining or stressing you do over it. But what’s meant to be will be and things have a way of working themselves out for the highest good of all. So just enjoy the moment when your life’s journey is transitioning. Great song.
Thank you for this- I knew it had to do with angels/signs we see when we need it most- and I was going to look it up and then I saw this comment. It’s a beautiful reminder to me that someone is watching.
you are a MANIAC!
its not. jimmy eat worlds lead singer said its about trying to call the ghostbusters 555 number when he was a kid and the disappointment of finding out its not a real number.
@@tcorbhuman lmao but it is, angel numbers are real. Only those who have had the experience know what I’m talking about. On that note Music is open to interpretation that’s the beauty of it. So criminally underrated...
For those wondering:
“I’ve always liked the Rick Springfield video for ‘Bop ‘Till You Drop’. A reptilian overlord managing his minions gets overthrown by his workforce. He’s kind of trying to keep them in line, but one guy breaks into song and mass rebellion ensues. From the overlord’s perspective, that day was a pretty bad day. I always thought that was funny. So ‘555’ sees me cast as a galactic evil master, overseeing an army of cloned species doing my bidding - this is the only life they know, joining me in song in this post-apocalyptic dystopia.” - Jim Adkins
The video is a science-fiction post-apocalyptic nightmare filled with clones and an evil galactic master played by Jimmy Eat World frontman Jim Adkins... It’s about resisting accepted norms but also the fallout that can cause. (According to AltPress)
Didn’t do anything for me... I’ve always loved jew, but this is like an ugly spot for such a beautiful band
That's fucking perfect.
Jai I am loving the song, but the video was a big head-scratcher for me at first!
@@ZoeRice22 Its pulled Jimmy Eat World away from the middle of the road soft rock which they had ended trapping themselves in following Bleed American. Classic 80s sci-fi references.
Thomas Moore yes the sound of the entire new album is just flawless if you ask me :)
This video fits the music flawlessly. It’s hard to describe but I feel like this is a reality somewhere, like an intense lucid dream. The emotion flowing through the brief glimpses you catch of the eyes, the tension in all of the controlled movements. Glissando of the baseline during the chorus is beautiful and sad. Hits hard. Misunderstood villain who has good intentions. Triumph in heartache.
Maybe not just a misunderstood villain - maybe somebody who doesn't realise that he's the architect of his own loneliness, consoling himself with clone armies and a badass evil chair. At the end of the video he feels like he's broken through something, but who or what has he broken through to? He's not allowed anybody in his world other than himself.
So Scorpius from Farscape ^^
I'm totally down with an entire album with this theme and style. Weird how this song takes me back to my childhood in the 80s. Love it.

Why does it sound so nostalgic when it's new?
Jake Serra that’s when you know it’s good!
I was just talking to someone about how I really thought this was from years ago. hard to believe it came out a month ago. I love it though!
This is intentional, they are using the famous "4 chords" in the chorus section. You have heard this chord progression time and time again in other songs and that is where that nostalgic feeling is coming from. Search "4 chords" from The Axis of Awesome
To me it sounds like their old stuff but just with a modern touch. It's good.
I guess... Due to the use of synthesizer... The production also... making it somewhat in the style of eighties radio rock like 'journey'
This is giving me some serious late 80's early 90's late-night mix radio vibes. I dig. Takes me back.

Same... at first I was like wtf ... did not like the song .. but it came on while I was at work and I liked the song without the video
@@demonwaterdemonwater4993 this is my impression about life in general Tbh :')
They were going for a serious 80's video vibe here with mega Dune undertones.
80s influenced without having to slam our face with references and effects
valid
Sounds like a Talk Talk song, I can see Mark Hollis ticks in his acting too
Why? Expressing emotions can be hard after a void, asshole.
Now you can hear it.
Try illusionary
Sometimes I really dig cheesy, reference heavy stuff. But it is refreshing to see someone make an 80s inspired song without immediately making the visuals about the 80s. It makes it seem less gimmicky and more about a sound production choice.
@@jacobmartinelli7496 are you alright? Who are you even aiming at this and what are you trying to say?
Alright, I finally had to comment on this amazing video and song. It seems to me like a person who has kept the faith and is approaching middle age, with none of the tangible rewards that were expected. The growing sense that it was all for nothing, that there wasn't always a reason for the pain. The setting of a sci fi movie with cheesy special effects is like all the tricks that your mind uses to convince you to keep going down a path that isn't like anyone said it would be. To convince you there is a chorus of agreeing voices with you, but its just one voice cleverly manipulated. It is all smoke and mirrors to both entertain us and keep us playing our parts, without telling us it is all empty.
I feel like they paid close attention to his emoting, and especially the times the smile drops enough to reveal doubt, worry, and sadness in the eyes.
Maybe you just never learned the source of the pain?
This gives me nostalgic feelings from the early 90s for some reason. Idk why
This is so good but you must hear “Whispering Wolf” or “The Wave Acoustic” by SLT 🤘🎶🤘🎶🤘
When you've conquered the Universe but haven't conquered her heart.

This comment made my day.
Never expected this from J.E.W... BUT... I can't help but LOVE it...
I watched it once and was 100% "WTF????"... but for some reason I have watched it 5 more times and want to keep hitting replay...
10/10... love it!
bbqwithchris when I first watched it I was watching random things. It popped up. Grabbed my attention. My initial reaction was. Wtf?? But. I’ve been obsessed with it ever since! 😆
“Evil overlord has a moment” 🖤
I searched 555 and this song popped up. THANK YOU UNIVERSE , the message is clear I will let go of my past self and move forward. Try to focus on the simple things and be grateful for them♡
This is what happens when you break up with a super villain.

dammit I busted out laughing way too loud at this and I didn't know how to explain because my family already doesnt like any of my music choices or genres so I just had to sit here laughing, looking like an idiot .
I've been listening to this song nonstop for over a month now.
Amanda Galindo same.
Everyday everyday everyday
Same here, i listen it on a random playlist and cant stop
Same. Getting a divorce. Dad just got cancer diagnosis. I suck at humans lol. Raising a child is so difficult. This song is perfect.
@@eclopez946 Nice.
This song speaks to me. It soothes my depression for a few minutes. I play it over and over. Thank you, guys.
absolutely one of the best songs and videos in the last decade
His face expressions are gold!
miniharez the mouth twitches and stuff? My fave. 🤗🥰😘
I’ve watched this video now 1,323 times. RUclips emailed me this morning “you good bro?”
Word?
Brennan Gatlin I’ve kept this on repeat, blasted through several speakers. Love this.
Music and video are hypnotic
havent got to see the yet
i watched beveryll hills 90210 today for 750 minutes straight
I just also realized that the 'angel number' (I don't know much about them but..) 555 means change. And that you're going through a change in your life and that it is time to let go of the ‘old’ that is no longer positively serving you
"There's always reason to let it change"
You are my beautiful discovery of this day❤
Jimmy: I wanna look as tired and evil as I feel
FX Make-up artist: Say no more, fam!
And nails it.
it's good to see jimmy eat world survived the apocalypse.
Caused*
Survived 2020
And apparently they "did not eat world" as we are thankfully still here to enjoy this gem lol :)
Well, now we are living in a lockdown period.. Feels like in a apocalypse
You from seven months ago had no idea of the apocalypse that was about to happen in 2020
i never thought when i first heard this band they would become so important to me later in life, Jimmy Eat World is fucking amazing.
this track IS weirdly extremely surreally nostalgic. and anyone saying "it's because of the chords they used", no. yes they are using familiar chords, like millions of other songs, but that doesn't mean every time a song uses those chords you think "omg this sounds so nostalgic". quite the opposite, those chords are actually completely normalized, because we hear them constantly; those are not the "standout" factor here, and the fact that the progression is very "standard" is what makes it even more fascinating how this track stands out in a surreally different way
So weird. I’ve been seeing 555 every where none stop then I stumble across this song
Juanita Lackey same, finally someone else... more people need to see this and like this comment. Something different is coming...
Me too. Also I looked up 555 and it says it's the number of jesus christ... I also had a very vivid dream/nightmare and woke up right at 555.
Get you a man who looks at you the way Jimmy looks at his cultists.
Garrett St. Amand goals.
Hes so proud, like a father 😂
if i could laugh reacc i would lol
Underrated comment. After reading it I can't rewatch without giggling when he slow zooms across the sea of faces.
Phyre comment bro....phyre! !
This is one of my favorite music videos ever, the aesthetic and mood are absolutely perfect.
top 3 of the best songs of the group the sound, the voices, the tune of the music, everything is very good ...
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!
This character is so cool and definitely needs a backstory, and the song is even more badass.

I love this. It reminds me of some of the emotional pop songs that were out when I was a kid, from people like Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Cyndi Lauper, etc.
Why is this song so underrated??? I don't understand.❤❤❤🖤🤍 I'm pretty sure I've watched this video over 50 times now. SO GOOD!!!

"We interrupt this Jimmy Eat World album to bring you Peter Gabriel."
They do some great Peter Gabriel
Peter Gabriel has any song that is similar to this one? I need more THIS in my life
@@thales6790 Yeah, some of his songs are in this vein. "Come Talk to Me" from Us, among other songs from that album; much of the album Up, "Mercy Street" from So (and "In Your Eyes", for that matter), and others I can't think of right now.
Damn..... True. Never thought of that.... Wow. You called it.....
Kinda reminds me of muse.
Their sound has matured so much since "in the middle" or "sweetness" which were both also landmark for their time. I don't know how this song didn't hit harder with people because It's amazing. It doesn't quite make me cry like "drugs or me" but it's so interesting to listen to.
Cautioners, Sundown, or Hear You Me doesn't make you cry???
Will always think of Mike Gill when I hear this song, thanks for preserving him a bit in this tune
it's crazy. this song feels so poppy and modernist...but when you actually listen, most of that feeling comes from the drums. the bass is doing the heavy lifting, the guitars are atmospheric and nigh nonexistant. coupled with the drums mostly using MIDI pads instead of acoustic drums.
the reality is that this song is way more acoustically oriented than most of what is considered rock by the radio industry these days. this is real rock. just compositionally modernized.
tazmon122 felt the same vibes “musician
Great comment, guitar as texture, bass as melody, very new wave feel.
Feel that bass come up and feel like its going to wash over you and it stops and another punches you in the guts! Genius!!!
The song in general is pretty good - but why on earth do all the vocals nowadays have sooo much processing?!?!? My 12 and 15 year olds won't even listen unless it has mega processing and auto-tune.

This band has helped me pull through some very dark periods in my life.
I can relate to that. Oddly enough, when this video dropped I was going through some really really heavy stuff and I was literally thinking about how I can't change anything that's going on no matter how bad I want to then this song pops up on my feed. Once again, Jimmy Eat World comes out what's something I need to hear at a very dark time
Amen to that...JEW, over the last 15 years has been a 'go-to' for me.
Mu brother died in 2011 of lung cancer. Jimmy Eat World got me through some really really shit days. I just got to see them live for this albums release in the UK last month and it has reminded me how much they affected and helped my life. I genuinely can say they are my favourite band now and forever. Also on the off chance any of them read this. Thanks for getting me through the worst time in my life. I wouldn't be here without you guys.
"Pain" always helped 🤝
That song just got to the moment when i was like listnening for songs of my teenage like "work", "pain", unheard for decades, when i heard that, standing in a winter forest alone, being a little high. and just wow!!
Such a great band. This song is so poignant. Such a great 80's-early 90's vibe.
