F.C. Grace was my great grandfather! People came from all over the Midwest to get their furniture in Denver, or the other store locations in Clarinda, IA and Kidder, MO. Some of my earliest memories are of watching my grandpa (primarily F.C. Grace Jr., who took over in later years of operation) talk to customers, and myself “helping” haul furniture into trucks to find their new homes. Things have changed and the family business no longer exists, but when I’m working anywhere north of Kansas City, my clients inevitably all have memories or roots that can somehow be traced back to F.C Grace and maybe a piece of furniture still in use today!
I grew up in Harrison Co. and remember going with my dad Denver to buy furniture and appliances at F.C. Graces. He had pictures of his fishing trips he had gone on on the walls along with some of the fish. I remember your great grandfather set in the office and he and my dad traded war stories as they say for hours it seamed. Finally my dad wrote a number on a piece of paper and handed it to him. He looked at it, said "we have a deal" and stuck out his hand and shook my dads hand. Then he told the lady at the counter "wright this up and have the boys help him load it in his truck." We went there to buy a dish washer and we did and a deepfreeze and a new recliner. LOL That was over 50 years a go.

About 7 years ago, my buddy and I went through Denver, MO on our way to fish the MDC conservation area east of there. It was certainly going down memory lane that day. Tons of history in such a small county.
I graduated from Worth County R-III in Grant City, and my father was born and raised in Allendale. Lot of family still live in and around Worth County. Your video of the area is wonderful, and brings back a lot of memories for me. Thank you very much for taking the time.

whenever i go to an old cemetery like the one at which you started this video, I am reminded of a quote that I cannot attribute now but the quote is you actually die twice: once physically and the second when the last person who ever says your name dies. So when I go to an old cemetery like that I every once in a while will pick an old headstone and say that person's name just so it's said again at least in that moment. who knows if it had been said in a hundred years before me

Excellent video that brought back many memories. The buildings in Denver, Missouri that said, “F C Grace Furniture” made me smile about a family drive to Denver. In the early to mid-1960s, FC Grace Furniture was quite the home furnishings store in Northern Missouri. They advertised on the Kansas City television stations and KFEQ television in St. Joseph, Missouri. The had all kinds of furniture, electronics and flooring options. At the time, my parents and my self, would visit my aunt and uncle, that lived a few miles southeast of St. Joseph, on the weekends. Often times, we would pile into my uncle’s 1959 Sedan de Ville Cadillac (Yes, the model with the jet blast taillights) and go for a drive. Gas was cheap and the Cadillac had cold air conditioning. It was a good way to see some of the sights in the area. As a 10 or 11 year old boy, I was not involved in the planning of these trips. My uncle had decided that he and my aunt needed new carpeting for their house. Based on the television advertisements, he decided we should drive to Denver, Missouri to check out FC Grace. So, with my dad driving, we headed north to Denver, Missouri. The road network at that time left something to be desired. The Interstate system was still a great idea a few years from being completed. So the trip was on a combination of two lane highways and blacktop county roads. The trip took forever. I noticed on highway signs that we were closer to Des Moines, Iowa than we were to Kansas City. A couple of times I ask my dad if we were lost. “No”, he replied. He might have taken a wrong turn but that we were making great time! Finally, Denver appeared on a mileage sign. We were almost there! As we pulled into town, it was apparent that FC Grace had several buildings in town with different merchandise in each one. As we stopped in front of the building with “Carpeting” over the front door, it suddenly became apparent that they were CLOSED on Sunday! Missouri had a law at the time that forced most businesses to close on Sunday. Nobody had called ahead to see if they were open or not. After looking in the front windows for a period of time, we headed home. My uncle ended up buying his carpeting from a local store in St. Joseph. Thank you for memories of a family trip that bordered on the Griswold’s vacation to Wally World!
It's so green there, I've forgotten about how green it was in Missouri. The cemeteries are certainly well kept, it's nice to see that. The new building in Allendale is Allendale Baptist Church. The new church was opened December 2021. The old church building was where the pile of rocks are now. Hope to have a sign up soon for the new building.

Death-Go-Round cracks me up! The one near me growing up in Muskogee OK was in Palmer Park. It was literally a flat round metal disc, no handrails. We got it up to 30+ MPH when I put the back wheel of my motorcycle on it and gave it the gas! It started howling so loud people came out to see what in the world was going on. All of the kids high-tailed it before we got in trouble!
Good video as always. I just saw another video about the county seat of Blaine, County, Nebraska. The population is 12. The county has a population of 431. One thing I noticed about the first towns you visited was that all the buildings still have their roofs. Some roof's do need replacing, but they are still there. Most small declining towns have buildings with fallen in roofs. The small city in Iowa had buildings more typical of declining small towns.
Looks like FC Grace owned the whole town of Denver. Worth County might be sparsely populated, but it sure is beautiful! Some of those roads look like driveways...Great video. Thanks!
Nice video! In comparison, I'm from a medium size town. As far back as I can remember (early '60s) the sign at the edge of town has read,"Welcome to Hartford KY, home of 2000 happy people and a few soreheads."
I just moved to Wentzville Missouri from Chicago and love this place! I want to go and explore some of the small towns but I’m not sure I’d be welcomed due to my skin color but this is a really beautiful state to live in and I’m so happy that I made the move 2 years ago! ❤❤❤

Last job I worked as a trucker owner operator hauling dirt was in north west Missouri building roads for a windmill project. Gotta love those old ghost towns and cemeteries in the weeds and fields, not to mention the bugs! 😊

That was my thought as well!! I am on a board of Mitchell Cemetery in Harrison Co. We struggle for funds to keep up maintenance but we all volunteer to help keep it maintained.

While watching today's video and following along with you on Google Maps, I couldn't help but notice the many rivers and streams in MO. They're everywhere. And the towns all looked, yeah, small, but they also looked very clean and tidy. I especially love seeing all the old churches. Was that a cicada in your vehicle at the end? My childhood stomping grounds. My grandparents and parents bought all their furniture from Graces in Denver. My dad’s family all grew up in Grant City. One of my uncles married a Fletchall. Saw some of my long lost family names on some of the tombstones you showed. Makes me yearn to head back to northern MO.
My father grew up on a farm a few miles south of Grant City. He and our family moved to Maryland in the 1950s to follow a job. He always wanted to go back to live, and finally did after he retired in 1983. I remember going there to visit in the 1950s and 1960s. It was pleasantly different for an urban boy!
Appreciate your work. While visiting Worth Co. in Aug. 2023 from Oregon state, I was limited on time & unable to explore further. A volunteer Ben Glick (deceased 2017) created listings & photographed markers in all cemeteries in Worth Co. & Gentry Co. These resources are available online 2008 & later updated 2014.

One thing for sure, it's farm land because I saw corn and soybeans growing. Since I live in Linn County so I know what corn and soybeans looks like after 34 years I should know what they look like. My Father grew up in Beloit Ks which is in Mitchell county and he would tell us what was growing. Oh what beautiful scenery so peaceful and quiet. Almost like Alaska only without the mountains. My brother and I long for a peaceful place to live and Worth County sure would be peaceful. Of course he doesn't want to get to far away from his daughter and grandchildren. Oh well maybe some day. As far as Irena, goes I don't believe you can get to where the town stood as the road is closed going to it. In the late 80s the old buildings were all that was left. It was a stop along the railroad.
The term I've seen is "city/county" for a place like St Louis City. Carson City and San Francisco are two city/county combos in my neck of the woods As always... Edit: A fine example of why Swifty Swift has the reputation it does. Yes, I watch a trucking YT channel!
The Missouri/Iowa border area has some interesting topography, a lot more scenic and less boring than I imagined it would be. I'd be interested in knowing more about the history of that part of Missouri. I, too find rural cemeteries in what some would call "the middle of nowhere" very interesting, with more people buried than you would think. All those people buried in those rural cemeteries represent people who were important to someone, and there was a reason they settled where they did--even if that area may not look like much to others
I live in Worth County..just outside of Sheridan..been here over 20 years now..sadly not a lot round here anymore...but wouldn't trade the peaceful country living for nothing!

Amazing how people cluster in unsustainable cities rather than living a good clean life. I live in the general area and the living is AMAZING. I came here 40 years ago from of all places the famous 'Boca' and it has been a great life among wonderful people, scenery, freedom from micro controlling GVT, obscene taxes and the general pressures of life in 'civilized' places. I can have a small farm, raise my own food, and when I built my house, I went to the county seat and asked about a building permit. THEY DIDN'T HAVE SUCH A THING. The said just come in and tell us when you're done. The never came out and 'inspected' and just asked a few questions about size and materials. I could and CAN use my own land to do as I please. Only restriction on these freedoms was it applied only to 10acres or more. Pretty easy when land is cheap. So if you are a freedom loving, hardworking individual not afraid to meet the adversity that nature may present, likes the idea of off grid life, you can find a place out here in the 'boonies'. Just don't come with the idea life is easier, it IS HOWEVER, BETTER.
I’m guessing the cemeteries are so full. As in days gone by farmers had large families to help on the farm. I noticed not only a lot of infants graves but also young adults graves in your pictures As large and as populated as some of those cemeteries were. It shows the hard life of early settlers in the Midwest
I have to say, as much as I'd love to live your life traveling around to all these places, i find that when I have the chance I really don't like traveling. Here is an example. This weekend I had the chance to go to Salina spur of the moment. It's a 6 hour drive from where I live in Iowa. There was a bad horror movie marathon playing at a local theater, MST3000 style and it really looked fun, fun enough to actually make that drive I think. But when the time came, I just didn't want to go. I find that i like the idea of traveling but I don't like the actual traveling. I would rather stay home. it's so weird. I get fired up to want to go somewhere and when I have the chance, the day comes, I just don't want to. It seems actually traveling every weekend like you is harder than it seems, at least to me. I'd rather just stay home.
I understand what you’re saying. To me it’s like exercise. Sometimes the hardest part is starting. I’ve had those feelings before but by the time I stop at my local gas station, fill up, and start drinking a coffee my mind begins to think about what lay ahead. And then I get excited 😊
Many Many towns in N. Missouri S.Iowa decimated by ---70's railroad removal, 80's farm crisis (main culprit), hog confinement 90's, meth late 90's till now... Lonesome Dove type of places. I ran all over N.Missouri in the late 80's as my dad ran for US congress 6th district NW Missouri. Twice.
Trivia Question...... Who is Worth Counties most famous resident. Answer- Harlen Leeland (Harley) Race, Born in Quitman Missouri but grew-up in Grant City and graduated from Worth County RIII High School where he played Football, Basketball and Baseball, How do I know? Because my grandparents grew up with him and were life long friends.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Yep, They really were lifelong friends too, I can remember when I was a kid whenever he came to the area he would stay at my grandparents house and always brought other wrestlers with him. there were times there was 10-12 guys sleeping on the couch or down in the basement. I met ALOT of the stars in the late 70's to mid 80's and my grandparents never bought ANYTHING while they were there, Grandma especially loved it when Rufus R. Jones came because she didn't have to cook, Before he was a wrestler Rufus was a certified chef and was the head chef at one of the best steakhouses in Myrtle Beach South Carolina.

Last job I worked as a trucker owner operator hauling dirt was in north west Missouri building roads for a windmill project. Gotta love those old ghost towns and cemeteries in the weeds and fields, not to mention the bugs! 😊
This area looks so idyllic and wonderful - what a place those little towns would be to grow up! ❤ As beautiful as everything looks in summer, I bet it's also stunning in autumn and winter with the hills, and fields, and bunches of trees...🍁 I'm going to have to see if that tearoom in Allendale is still in operation. That was my thought as well!! I am on a board of Mitchell Cemetery in Harrison Co. We struggle for funds to keep up maintenance but we all volunteer to help keep it maintained.

While watching today's video and following along with you on Google Maps, I couldn't help but notice the many rivers and streams in MO. They're everywhere. And the towns all looked, yeah, small, but they also looked very clean and tidy. I especially love seeing all the old churches. Was that a cicada in your vehicle at the end? Loved this series. Missouri is beautiful country. People come for the churches, schools and businesses. When those 3 leave so do the people. Sad when more souls are in the cemeteries than in the towns. Always great to find a deathgoround 😉 Stay safe and GOD bless

I grew up in Harrison county to the east. We would go to Allendale to the boot store that was there to buy cowboy boots.
It's weird seeing more headstones than citizens for sure. I bet the town was even more beautiful when it was busy. So many untold stories there.

My childhood stomping grounds. My grandparents and parents bought all their furniture from Graces in Denver. My dad’s family all grew up in Grant City. One of my uncles married a Fletchall. Saw some of my long lost family names on some of the tombstones you showed. Makes me yearn to head back to northern MO.

My ancestors are from this county and some are buried there. You actually showed some of their headstones.
My father grew up on a farm a few miles south of Grant City. He and our family moved to Maryland in the 1950s to follow a job. He always wanted to go back to live, and finally did after he retired in 1983. I remember going there to visit in the 1950s and 1960s. It was pleasantly different for an urban boy!

The rolling hills, the trees, the agriculture, and the streams and rivers! Who could ask for more? My kind of area. A fair part of southern Iowa and northern Missouri are like this. So inviting to set up residency in an area such as this one.

There's a historical marker (I think in front of the courthouse or something) about Glenn Miller first learning how to play music in that town. Great coverage so far! I can't remember if I asked you this before but do you plan on exploring Shelby County, MO soon? I got plenty of memories there

One thing for sure, it's farm land because I saw corn and soybeans growing. Since I live in Linn County so I know what corn and soybeans looks like after 34 years I should know what they look like. My Father grew up in Beloit Ks which is in Mitchell county and he would tell us what was growing. Oh what beautiful scenery so peaceful and quiet. Almost like Alaska only without the mountains. My brother and I long for a peaceful place to live and Worth County sure would be peaceful. Of course he doesn't want to get to far away from his daughter and grandchildren. Oh well maybe some day. As far as Irena, goes I don't believe you can get to where the town stood as the road is closed going to it. In the late 80s the old buildings were all that was left. It was a stop along the railroad.

The Missouri/Iowa border area has some interesting topography, a lot more scenic and less boring than I imagined it would be. I'd be interested in knowing more about the history of that part of Missouri. I, too find rural cemeteries in what some would call "the middle of nowhere" very interesting, with more people buried than you would think. All those people buried in those rural cemeteries represent people who were important to someone, and there was a reason they settled where they did--even if that area may not look like much to others

I have relatives in that area, mainly in Gentry and Harrisson counties.
Amazing how people cluster in unsustainable cities rather than living a good clean life. I live in the general area and the living is AMAZING. I came here 40 years ago from of all places the famous 'Boca' and it has been a great life among wonderful people, scenery, freedom from micro controlling GVT, obscene taxes and the general pressures of life in 'civilized' places. I can have a small farm, raise my own food, and when I built my house, I went to the county seat and asked about a building permit. THEY DIDN'T HAVE SUCH A THING. The said just come in and tell us when you're done. The never came out and 'inspected' and just asked a few questions about size and materials. I could and CAN use my own land to do as I please. Only restriction on these freedoms was it applied only to 10acres or more. Pretty easy when land is cheap. So if you are a freedom loving, hardworking individual not afraid to meet the adversity that nature may present, likes the idea of off grid life, you can find a place out here in the 'boonies'. Just don't come with the idea life is easier, it IS HOWEVER, BETTER.

I’m guessing the cemeteries are so full. As in days gone by farmers had large families to help on the farm. I noticed not only a lot of infants graves but also young adults graves in your pictures

I have to say, as much as I'd love to live your life traveling around to all these places, i find that when I have the chance I really don't like traveling. Here is an example. This weekend I had the chance to go to Salina spur of the moment. It's a 6 hour drive from where I live in Iowa. There was a bad horror movie marathon playing at a local theater, MST3000 style and it really looked fun, fun enough to actually make that drive I think. But when the time came, I just didn't want to go. I find that i like the idea of traveling but I don't like the actual traveling. I would rather stay home. it's so weird. I get fired up to want to go somewhere and when I have the chance, the day comes, I just don't want to. It seems actually traveling every weekend like you is harder than it seems, at least to me. I'd rather just stay home.
I understand what you’re saying. To me it’s like exercise. Sometimes the hardest part is starting. I’ve had those feelings before but by the time I stop at my local gas station, fill up, and start drinking a coffee my mind begins to think about what lay ahead. And then I get excited 😊
Although the local population has gone down, the cemeteries all well-kept. There are probably several reasons for that.
It’s like Iowa is the short story.

Many Many towns in N. Missouri S.Iowa decimated by ---70's railroad removal, 80's farm crisis (main culprit), hog confinement 90's, meth late 90's till now... Lonesome Dove type of places.
I ran all over N.Missouri in the late 80's as my dad ran for US congress 6th district NW Missouri. Twice.
I always wonder how many tires you go through per county

@@TravelwithaWiseguy Yep, They really were lifelong friends too, I can remember when I was a kid whenever he came to the area he would stay at my grandparents house and always brought other wrestlers with him. there were times there was 10-12 guys sleeping on the couch or down in the basement. I met ALOT of the stars in the late 70's to mid 80's and my grandparents never bought ANYTHING while they were there, Grandma especially loved it when Rufus R. Jones came because she didn't have to cook, Before he was a wrestler Rufus was a certified chef and was the head chef at one of the best steakhouses in Myrtle Beach South Carolina.
