  • The trailer for the new Willy Wonka movie starring Timothée Chalamet just dropped, and I’m not gonna lie-I’m slightly concerned. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was one of my favorite movies growing up, so I really don’t want this to be a miss. Am I overreacting, or are you skeptical too? Let’s watch and react.

I don't mean this to be rude, but, how many thousands of times am I going to see this same exact ostensible quotation spammed in comment sections before people catch on that this isn't an actual Tolkien quote? It's heavily paraphrased from dialogue said by Frodo in the Return of the King, and some of Tolkien's writings in the Silmarillion... the sentiment is there, but the prose is far clunkier than anything Tolkien ever wrote.
Also, probably not a good idea to corrupt, as it were, the original writer's words in a comment meant to be pointing at others for doing the same-- it only undermines your point, which is one I otherwise agree with.

"Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker." Nobody could beat Gene Wilder for the role of Willy Wonka. He acts with every molecule of his being. I think part of what made him so charming in that original movie was that he always had a twinkle in his eye when he spoke. He was engaging to watch because he was always so expressive. Gene was a natural who never needed to act much.

    • @kaitlyn419
      @kaitlyn419 10 месяцев назад +6

Wilder’s Wonka is the epitome of crazy vs genius. He projects a high energy, spastic, charming, sarcastic and wise take on Wonka which is appealing and enduring to many people. He encapsulates pure imagination more.
Depp’s Wonka is a low energy, awkward, introverted take on Wonka that embodies ‘man locked inside his own world for 15 years with Oompa Loompas.’ This take emphasizes his methodical and mysterious traits, unpredictable, yet childish and imaginative. Along with the darker color palette, I feel like it’s his quirky awkward reserved nature that many people find so creepy.
Both are valid takes, it depends on which one you prefer. I love Depp’s more, personally, but one thing most can agree on is how TC seems like he’s trying both too hard AND not enough. He’d be better off playing Depp’s since both have a raw awkward nature about them
      Edit: typo

For me, Wonka’s character had a subtle edge to it. Something that made him almost as scary as he was amazing. We see a glimpse of it in Wilder’s portrayal (for example, scene “YOU LOSE! GOOD DAY, SIR!”) and in Depp’s, especially in the book. Just from the trailer, it feels like this new Wonka has got no edge at all, almost as if it were surgically removed. What a shame! Don’t forget, people, there’s been a big censoring project for Dahl’s books! New, “less problematic” versions have been published, and they are approved by The Party. I assume this new movie is a ploy to get some co-signs on that “Oompa Loompas are racist”/Woke-censoring B.S.

I'd have been down for showing a normal kid that has dreams...and then through the process of building the WOnka empire becomes introverted and eccentric. Unless of course there is another movie down the track that shows how Wonka went from optomistic to closing his factory...but feel that transition and change needed to be shown in one movie. Then open up the story more if needed.
I feel like Wonka didn't have a younger sidekick. I'd have thought an older one. It is a kids movie though after all so guess it needs A kid in there somewhere.

In my humble opinion, both Gene and Johnny brought life to the character in their own quirky ways.
I enjoyed both films and think that they have both aged well.
The music of both films added value to them, especially Pure Imagination, because of this, I believe for the hard-core Wonka fans, the music for the new film would be critical in that regard.
Chalamet, in the trailer, seems as though he's acting the part, rather than naturally projecting the character as his predecessors did so well.
The back-story presented in Johnny's outing as Willy was quite intriguing and helped in realizing Johnny's Wonka characterization.
It would be a shame if that element gets lost in this prequel-of-sorts.
In some ways Johnny's Wonka, and Gene's Wonka, share some synergy.
It would be tragic if this new depiction is at odds with those that went before.
Because of the decades between the previous films, there is an intrinsic perception of canon with regard to the Wonka character, more so because of his larger-than-life oddball persona. I believe that this needs to be most significant thread that has to be woven for the new film to be successful.
    Fingers crossed.

The Johnny Depp version was closer to the book, but I always liked the original version. I think I'll be ok with this one because it's not technically a remake; it's an origin story. We would expect a young Willy to be growing into himself. If he has a sidekick, great. If it turns out the ooompa loompas introduced themselves, interesting. It would explain WHY the 1971 ooopmas were happy to be there.
On a stupid sidenote: how often does autocorrect mess up what we're typing? But autocorrect accepts and even suggests oompa loompa?! Lol

Just watched this movie yesterday, I thought it was amazing. The ethnic diversity of the cast didn't feel super forced, it kinda felt like watching the 90s version of Cinderella with Brandy. Plus the storyline (remember those in a movie) actually fit in with the original Gene Wilder version. Obvious bits of social commentary, but they were very much shown with a comedic angle. And the musical numbers were nothing short of astounding.

You definitely get Harry Potter vibes from the special effects, but that’s not a bad thing. The political aspects didn’t feel forced. There has to be a bad guy, and that was the chocolate cartel in this case. I understand where the concern over wokeness taking over the story comes from, but was just a fairy tale in the end.

IIRC Wonka's callousness was a result of his success. He was originally a personable if bizarre man until his chocolate was turned into a status symbol by the wealthy and other candymakers started sending spies into his factory and bribing the workers. He became so disillusioned with a project meant to make people happy thar he fired sll his workers in favor of Oompa Loompas and sealed the factory.
Him being bright eyed and energetic marries well to the backstory, actually. The tone of the trailer is whimsical but it's hard to imagine yhe movie wouldn't end with Wonka sealing the factory.

Even Roald Dahl's wife helped with the direction of it. I like both, but lean towards Tim Burtons version bc they showed more respect to the original material than its predecessor. Ok, going back to the Ooompa Loompas in the book. I am a child of the 70's am 55 now. So I grew up in the era these books and concepts were acceptable. Wonka did indeed travel to deepest Africa where he met the Ooompa Loompas who were a pygmy tribe. Being small, they were hunted by monsters they had little defence to. Their food was bland and tasteless. However, their currency and reason for existing was the cocoa bean. Which being the basis for Chocolate, Wonka had plenty of.
It was a mutually beneficial Business arrangement. The Ooompa Loompas were paid wages in Cocoa Beans, while also having safe accommodation at the factory. They were NOT nor NEVER been exploited or being slaves! They were willing and complicit as part of a business contract. As far as Roald Dahl being racist. He was of Indian decent being born in India, the fact he inlcuded Black people in the story makes him inclusive and diverse, the depiction and behaviours of them were always respectful by Roald Dahl. He should be commended. Today's Social Engineering of pandering to those being too offended easily, cancel culture, woke culture, BLM culture, Rainbow Flag culture and all the other loony lefts, Need to be rounded up and assessed for mental health issues.

If she had any brains instead of moaning she could write a diet book specifically aimed at black people, gullible black women would rush out and buy it, she’d make a fortune when in reality the book will just be full of the same stuff as other books but she’ll be too fat and lazy to do that

@@michaelwhitehead6594 it is slavery just not chattel slavery. There are multiple times of slavery. Wonka would be charged with slavery if any one from the government saw how working conditions for the Oompa's since his factory is in Britain I think and he has to follow British wage laws. But Wonka would also get in trouble for the children learning there lessons. What you described is what slave owners use to use to justify their slaves in the US. Also also people today justify their slaves today like sex slaves who "willingly" stay. If they now live in I think Britain in his factory which is not allowed for your employer to also be your landlord for a work force that large, but if they aren't paid in $ none of them could leave even if they wanted to since they have no $ to buy food, water, housing, etc. They might not even understand the concept of $ as they get everything from Wonka in terms of food and shelter etc. If they go into London they can't buy anything or have a history like credit to apply to get anything like a flat. Imagine if Nestle had African small people working in a factory in Switzerland and paid them in lollipops but said they willingly work there for no money and they are better off than they were in Africa. I grew up with the original movie and my kids grew up with the new movie so we are all excited for the next generation of wonka. There are so many different things to love about the two current movies, which each took creative choices that were miles from the original book, but were each in their own way lovely stories.
That's one thing people keep forgetting. That a movie is for entertainment and politics shouldn't tell you what is good and what is not.
My son and I are planning to go see the new movie in December when it hits the big screen and give our own, none political, based on pure love of movies opinion of the next willy wonka.

    1) The stories are fresh and original
    2) The costume dramas are gorgeous
    3) There are so many handsome Asian actors!
Admittedly they are still playing catch-up with some things like CGI, but getting there. If you can handle reading subtitles, it opens up 'a whole new world'. Plus, when it comes to series, I like that the whole story is wrapped up in 8 to 40 episodes, not year after year of the same old thing in endless seasons. The Philippines and Vietnam are also worth checking out for TV (or streaming) shows.

This was going to be my point. Its a prequel and so the character of Wonka is still developing. In the original movie the Umpa Lumpas came from Loompaland where giants with funny names I cannot remember would eat them so Wonka saved the last of them and took them with him back to England. It would seem from this video that Hugh Grants character may be enlisting Wonka for this very purpose and if thats the case it will easily dispel any racism claims unless people think saving the lives of tiny magical orange skinned people is racist.
I also agree the movie appears to be adding in new characters of colour and not drawing attention to that which I like. There is no reason to think Wonka didnt have a black female sidekick on some of his early adventures. So long as she does not become the centre of attention and does not outdo Wonka I think nobody will care what her skin colour is.
Comparing this to the recent images from Snow White ( and the 7 " magical creatures" that are def not dwarves ) I think this looks like a much healthier movie and one I will likely be going to see.

I never watched the old movies, I read the Roald Dahl's books, so maybe there's something in the old movie that I just don't know about, but I want to ask: Why do they keep wanting to give Wonka a backstory? They tried to do that in the Johnny Depp movie, with his dad being this anti-candy dentist or whatever, and it was weird.
Why are people hyperfocusing on Wonka? The story is NOT about him. It's never about him. The original Roald Dahl story was supposed to be all about Charlie and these other kids getting to experience a magical experience inside this place that gave people wondrous experiences through its candy products. Wonka is just supposed to be *there* with no explanation of why and how he managed to insert all the magic stuff in his chocolates, and frankly, I don't need or want to know about Wonka's backstory.

    • @murderoustendencies
      @murderoustendencies 11 месяцев назад +4

The original movie didn't do that. Interestingly though the original one was called "Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory" while the Depp (Burton) one was called Charlie and the chocolate factory. I'd argue the first one really focused on Wonka and the second did focus on both. I think this new film and the Burton one have to be taken separately as it is entirely in Burton's character to focus on a specific character and just put his imagined version of his story into picture. To me it just fits very well with the type of work he usually does, and you'll notice it really isn't supposed to be cannon, and it's a very exaggerated, incomplete and dream-like version of a backstory.
This new thing sounds really generic though. I think some people are just unimaginative and want someone else to create a backstory to fascinating characters and they end up solving so many questions that it's just not interesting anymore, there's no mystique anymore (my personal pet peeve is nurse Ratched).
Sorry for the essay, I studied cinema LOL.

@@murderoustendencies : I don't mind your reply at all! Hopefully you don't mind my also-somewhat-long reply. I wrote my comment in one big rush, so it might have be muddled, and I want to clarify it a little bit.
Whenever I see people talk about the Chocolate Factory story in general, everyone's all about Wonka (especially the old movie version, Gene Wilder I believe his name was?).
So the Burton movie and this new movie going on to make up this whole plot about Wonka's backstory seems to stem from that general Wonka-fixated mindset, and it irks me somewhat. I wasn't saying that the new movie is related to the Burton movie.
I get that maybe to most people the movie is their first exposure to it, so it's very nostalgic to a lot of people, but I'm book-only so I don't share that feeling.
Also, for the same book-only reason I always thought it was such a shame that all the movies did not give Wonka a goatee. It was how he was described and illustrated in the book. It kinda makes sense in this prequel, since he's supposed to be younger, but dang, was it so hard to just let Johnny Depp keep his beard for his Wonka role?

I'm interested if they are going to blur morality in this one. The original Gene Wilder one had some lessons for kids not to be greedy or spoilt. I bet thats where the wokeness is going to hit. Like in Malifecent we are supposed to feel sorry for the evil fairy who hurt sleeping beauty, whereas traditionally a the evil fairy was evil, it dosnt matter why because we judge her on her deeds, it was quite black and white. But now we're all moral reletivists, we'll see what things they're going to justify now.
