  • As a life long fan, it was a thrill for me to interview the legendary Leon Russell aboard his tour bus before a show at the Woodstock Opera House in Woodstock, Illinois, in 2003. I also had the opportunity to speak with his lovely and talented daughters Sugaree and Tina Rose. I've seen Leon dozens of times over the past 35 years and it has been quite satisfying to see his triumphant resurgence this past year (with special thanks to Sir Elton John), as well as his recent, if belated, election to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Thanks also to Mike Preston, friend and host of Pyscho Babble for providing the video. Enjoy!

I saw Leon in concert more than any other artist , while I enjoyed them all , his shows in the late 70's and early 80's were my favorites

Having seen Leon just last week in a good sized room in Tahoe, I find it hard to believe this interview was from 2003!!! He seems so much younger and more vital now in 2015! WOW, the man is timeless, and tireless, played about 20 days this month. The band is him and three musicians now and he sounds GREAT! My favorite set was just him and the piano. The CD "Signature Songs" is just like live! Thank you Leon, for sharing your songs and stories with us for all these years! The feeling of instant intimacy at your show was palpable! And, no 👓 meant we could see your wonderful facial expressions! See you next time!

Wouldn't you. With or w/o cocktails, he has done more lyrics than most read... An under-recognized music MAN.

@TheBasenjiman Leon has some serious medical issues, he is sometimes in a wheelchair. Elton John is
brilliant enough to realize what a talent Leon is, they've been on a world tour together.
As far as "small" venues go, that's Leon. He loves his music, and does it wherever it's appreciated. Cate

Yes, very lucky Patsea111 - I think I've come to realize that Leon's reputation for being a man of few words is because seems to be a very private person. At first glance that might seem odd for someone who has "acted out his life on stages with 10,000 people watching" but it is true nonetheless. I would love to talk to him at greater length because I am sure he has great stories to tell and wisdom to impart. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction will be March 14th.

Everybody has trouble remembering the words to hundreds of songs. You should get up on stage in front of thousands of people and try it sometime.
