Wow, I did not know this about Gary Busey. I clicked because I am a Leon fan and thought it was strange to have Gary talking about him and wondered what he'd have to say. Very pleasantly surprised.
Was lucky enough to work in a recording studio in Dallas and we had the honor of introducing Black Grass as the back up singers for the Carney album. At the end of the session, all went next door for a beer except Leon and me. All equipment was turned off and I was rolling up microphone and headphone cables. He was plinking his way through a new tune he had in mind. I asked if he needed anything and he said no. So I asked him to play "A Song For You" which he did. I was by myself in a recording studio with Leon Russell playing my favorite of all his tunes. It brought tears to my eyes - especially later when I realized I could have been recording it - it might never happen again - a 1 on 1 with Leon in a darkened studio playing that song. What a great memory. I loved both the man and his music.
This is one of the best interviews with Gary that I've seen in a very long time. It is clear he likes you and trusts you a great deal because it shows in everything. Gary appears very relaxed and friendly. Kudos to you for bringing that out in him so wonderfully!
I had the pleasure of meeting Gary several years ago at a fund raiser for brain injury survivors. Having anticipated this moment, I couldn’t resist asking, in a deadpan manner, him he was Buddy Holly. He looked at me sincerely and said he wasn’t but that I must be a fan of his and that he appreciated me, with a slight tug at my sleeve. I was thrilled at his calm and interest in what asking what had brought me to attend the event. Unforgettable.
I find it amazing that this guy that everyone thought was crazy was friends with Leon Russell. If Leon Russell did not find anything crazy about him, no one else should. LOL?
After just visiting the newly reopened Church Studio yesterday, watching this interview was so fascinating. Gary Busey is right , Tulsa is an amazing place , and that is because of the people here. Leon’s Spirit is everywhere at “The Church” . I highly recommend the visit to this hallowed ground.
I got to meet Gary at a ComicCon and I asked him about his time playing music with Leon. He lit up when he was talking about playing music and hanging out with Leon.
What is amazing clip of Gary Busey there. I never knew any of that. Gary has kind of a reputation of being a little cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs in Hollywood but everything he said about Leon makes perfect sense. Leon and I were born on the same day April 2nd. I never got a chance to meet him which I regret but I got a chance to see him perform at the Berkeley Community Theater in 1973. I'll never forget him climbing on top of his baby grand and play his black Les Paul Custom he had that place rocking he threw his tambourine in the audience and I grabbed half of it and the guy two seats down from me grabbed the other half. My poor girlfriend was in the middle of us covering her hcead so as not to get injured. After about a minute he helped me let go with a punch to the ribs. It's too bad I really wanted that tambouribne. But my hand was splattering blood from the sharp metal discs of the percussion instrument into my palm. It was quite a story and I embellished it as much as I thought I could get away with. Leon was an amazing man and I shed a few tears when I heard he passed. Elton John was instrumental in getting him into the Hall of Fame truly a Class Act.Leon was one of of a kind. I'm glad I lived in is time on Earth
This whole story is taking me to church! Great video, memories are priceless💰 LOVE Will Ò the Wisp Back to the Island Lady Blue ...ah Leon. Love new info+ Gary 😎 (my Bob) Amen🙏
Busey was an OK legend prior to his ascension into Hollywood...GB is a survivor and a helluva character. GB should be in a certain type of roles you see Bill Murray in...any character role really...its a shame they think he is a wild card.
