  • I tune large pipes for chimes for interactive, kinetic, or public art projects. There's quite a bit of math to consider with tuning and suspending large pipes to get the best resonance, and the mass and damping of the striker is very important to get good tone.

    I've long imagined using big, resonant logs in a wind chime. Would need a stout structure to suspend them but might sound very nice.

    hello, Im in the middle of a project to make tubular bells (I was hired to design a bell tower for a very small church, and I think It would be really cool to have huge tubular bells). Coincidentally I saw your video and I think that If I could make bells just like yours it would be just awesome! Could you tell me please how did you make them? which is the metal alloy how did you tune them?

    • @GreggPayne
      @GreggPayne  5 лет назад +5

      Thanks! The metal is schedule 40 aluminum pipes. Either 6061 or 6063 alloy. These are 4, 1/2" OD with about 1/4"wall thickness. The lengths of course vary depending on the frequency they're tuned to.

    hi gregg
    would you say aluminum sounds better than copper pipes/tubes..?

    • @GreggPayne
      @GreggPayne  4 года назад +2

      Some of my first chimes were 3" copper. Brass, copper and bronze sound good too but of course they're much heavier.

    • @bkrbyex4339
      @bkrbyex4339 3 года назад +2

    Do you have any plans for making these super low frequency chimes. At least some material guidance?

    • @GreggPayne
      @GreggPayne  2 года назад +1

      The low frequencies are just longer relative to the tube diameter. When you get too low the overtone harmonics will dominate so you just have to test what you’re using and see how it sounds. I use at least 1/4” wall aluminum tube or sch. 40. Low C 132 Hz is about as low as 4” pipes can get and still sound OK. Good luck and have fun!

    • @GreggPayne
      @GreggPayne  6 месяцев назад

      Hi, this is an old video! These smaller chimes were 4.5" OD x 1/4" wall thickness and the big ones were 6.5" diameter x .32" thickness, I believe. I also make even larger ones now that are 8" OD x .5" wall tubing, between 7'-10' long.

    • @RyanHarris77
      @RyanHarris77 8 лет назад +3

      +Loyd anonamous I know this is an old comment, but maybe this answer will help others wondering the same thing. He said pentatonic. In the key of C major it's: C,D,E,G,A. In the key of C minor it's: C,D,Eb,G,Bb. Transpose to whichever key you like.
