Hi there. you’re the best I’m the one that had trouble undo in the passenger seat on my Spyder F3. Well, I took off the trunk and run a big screwdriver to the area where it is locked and I ended up breaking the plastic that holds everything but it works I fixed it.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Oh no ...was Dudley Dooright there and the lady in black lol. We watch a RUclipsr called Mike a scavenger and it is amazing what he pulls out of the trash to scrap. And it's only metal stuff but the waist is ridiculous. We see them everywhere in the US. They are growing in numbers for sure. At the French Thousand Trails in Pompano Beach they all had Can-Ams. I've lost plenty of organs driving around America. Harbor Freight will have the channel locks. We love trains. Good job John you saved the day. Love the AirBnB. Another great video.
Wow! I have never checked mine😮, I will start doing that in the future!!! Thanks for the video! A small pipe wrench will work with the crescent wrench for the ball.
Loving it as ever. Good spidey senses picking it up. Loctite on the nut. I carry plummer tape. Acts as a nyloc.Seen people ignore things to their own detriment.
What would an odyssey be without a little adventure! Nothing that a martini can't smooth over. What a beautiful air bnb and what a view!! Cheers John and Miriam!
That's a scary adventure, I had a similar incident awhile back on a logging road in Nothern Ontario. When the ball actually detached from the hitch while I was towing a boat into a lake. Never to be seen again. Thankfully I always bring a spare and tools otherwise it would have been a days drive back to the main road without the boat. I am certainly glad yours was caught in good time without a major incident. GREAT INFORMATIVE POST !!!
The have a wrench for the hitch ball sized for the ball and an adjustable wrench can be used for the nut. An option you can use is red threadlocker to assure the nut will not work loose.
We don’t have a trailer, but I like the idea of doing a quick visual check at every stop. We’re leaving for Sturgis, SD, on 8/1. Our own adventure soon to begin.
I noticed when you put the ball into your hitch that the shank ( threaded part of ball) had a lot of play in the hole. You may need a ball with a larger shank.
Glad you caught that in time.We bought our Spyder used with a Freedom trailer. But never used it for the first year. but my trailer hitch was loose so I just tightened it up to the spec and never thought about it then when the recall came out for the front sprocket, I took it in and had that done and the dealer said I didn’t have any adjusting blocks to adjust the ax, very interesting never had a problem with my belt misalignment but anyway, we got that all taken care of but for sure do you want to check everything before you have the problem take care.
Glad you found the problem and got it fixed before something bad happen and ruined your trip thanks for sharing your adventure enjoyed watching take care have a great weekend
Hi John and Miriam, thank you for sharing your adventures with us. If I can make a suggestion, a heavy duty spring washer between the nut and the tow bar would most certainly prevent the tow bar from loosening up. I discovered this when the same thing happened to me whilst towing a boat some years ago. Greetings from OZ
Glad you averted a more serious problem, had that tow ball come completely loose. One other item I would personally carry would be a spare drive belt and all tools necessary to replace it. One well placed stone could easily leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere, also far, far away from a spare part.
Hi John & Miriam, thank you for another interesting video. 😃 I never thought about the hitch ball coming loose like that. Glad you were able to catch it before it came off completely. Being aware of strange sounds while ryding the Spyder is what saved you. I always listen to my Spyder when ryding. Safe travels and God Bless Artie & Tracy
Well, I certainly learned something. I have an annual maintenance routine for my Mini Mate trailer, as well as a pre-tow routine to verify the trailer is secure, but I have never included a check of the hitch ball nut. This video is a valuable lesson, so thank you, John 😁👍
Thank goodness it was "not as bad" as the breakdown on Rt 66 last year! So glad you could get it fixed yourself! It's always a great feeling to be able to get yourself out of jam and not disrupting your trip. We once fixed a buddies broken shifter (he lost the connecting nut) with zip ties on the side of the road. Those and duct tape are standards in my tool kit. Sometimes ya never know!
All the times we've driven from one end of quebec to the other I don't think there's been a time without a breakdown usually something to do with a tire, if a vehicle can survive quebec it'll survive anywhere lol Your compliments about us are greatly appreciated.❤
Beautiful video.. and very glad everything worked out.. great tip carry a few extra tools that you might need in an emergency .. I do a walk-a-round and visual check.. before a ride it's a good routine to get into..
Short list: passport. They did ask about where we were going and if we had fruits/veggies/tobacco/alcohol/firearms. When John said that he had a cigar, they wanted to know if it was Cuban (it was not).
Hi Katy. Are you home now? We will want to hear all about your awesome trip! You and Sebastian will have your video debut next Saturday. Hope John is able to capture the joy we experienced in our day together.
John, the wrench you used is fine for the moment, those hitch ball nuts need to be torqued to a specific poundage. Have a shop do that for you, auto body, motor cycle, any shop where a specific torque is needed. They have the tools needed. I have a hitch for my 2700# camper that needed the hitch ball tightened to 600#. Tool cost $800, body shop did it for $20.
@@miriambryant1896 Hello! 😁 We came back last week, after 4 week of travel. We had so much rain 🤪 but still had a great time. The views were unbelievable ! Peoples were intrigue by the spyder. We did some camping but because of the weather more hotel!
Loctite and a pipe wrench or adjustable jaw wrench to hold the top. When you get home you can drill a hole through the bolt below the nut and put a cotter pin in it or goober up the threads or give it a tack weld. Plus you didn’t tighten that near tight enough… you need a 3’ long pipe on that wrench…
Nice video, I've been thinking about buying a used Spider. At 72 years young and a few strokes two wheels are out. Would like to know if the smaller motor would hold up to two up riding.
We always ride two up (often with a trailer attached) and have never had a problem. John chose the 2014 model bc it is more powerful than the earlier models.
take the nut off the other ball and put it on too locking the two nuts against each other is the way to do it and it will never work loose if you lock the nuts up against each other instead of just tight against the hitch
Blue Loc-tite . Don't leave home without it.

Walmart parking lot repairs are the best, lol!
Lots to love about Canada, Miriam!!
glad you got to meet up with Spyder Richard! What a wonderful guy!
Ugh good thing you stopped. I lost the trailer ball nut while pulling a 23 foot boat back in the day. People always cross the safety chains!
Hi John, I put a little blue locktite on mine and it never comes loose.
Nice AirB&B...great job, Miriam!!
Oh man I'm happy you didn't lose your trailer glad you got it taken care of my friend great video ride safe
Grease the ball, for less stress and friction on the ball to possibly turn. You're all having too much fun, I'm jealous!
Glad you were able to get that fixed!
My family and I love Canada! Years ago we kept our boat in Sarna Ontario which is on Lake Huron.
The people there where always so friendly.
I actually drilled a hole and inserted a cotter pin. Just in case . Won’t back all the way off.
Glad your safe.
You forgot loctite for your motorcycle hitch ball stop nuts coming lose! John and Miriam's 😊

Canada is beautiful I’ve loved it every time I’ve visited

It's good to put on a little bit of that Lock tight the blue one, not the red won't seize it. It'll just keep it from loosening up.

I’m glad that you’re taking the side roads but sad they caused a hiccup in the hitch.

BLUE LOCTITE.......And just a friendly FYI, you can't get that ball nut as tight as it should be with a 10 or 12" adjustable wrench.

Safe travels, Steve! Can’t wait to hear about your trip to sturgis.
Hi John. Can you please share what the video gear you’re using. Your videos are FANTASTIC!!! Thank you
Prism helmet cameras and GoPro 7 and 3. Power Director editing software. Thank you for the nice complement!
Glad that it was nothing major but it is a great lesson to remember. Thanks for sharing with us the good and the bad.

Blue locktite buddy and you won’t need a bunch of wrenches. ❤
Good call...😊
Double up the retaining nut, that’ll lick it up. Loctite, drill a hole in the shaft, add a reusable pin. Good luck in your travels
Big fam of the pin or idea.

Did not know I could do that, thank you
I learn that lesson after my escapade in Nothern Ontario has never loosened again a $1.75 game Changer!

I’m glad it all worked out! I would use a longer wrench before you leave on your next trip and give it alittle extra!
Use torque putty to ease your inspection of important parts, if the putty cracks you know is starting to get loose.
I will think about checking it ! We had no problem with ours during the trip but lets take no chances! Thanks again for your tips

Electrical tape, Blue Loctite, 550 cord and Multi Tool are good companions on a long road trip and don't take much space in a bike tool kit.
John says his kit includes all but the loctite and he is looking into including that. Great advice!
@@miriambryant1896 Excellent. Be safe !

Grease is good but a little messy but most everything on trikes is put together with blue loctite or something similar.
So how many miles on the ol' Spyder?
42,000
Balls come with lock washer, so what happened to it? Also Loctite Threadlocker Blue 242 would be added prevention.
It failed!!,,, next time Threadlocker!!

the small 2 cylinder engine worked fine on our test run of about 300 miles
We experienced some very "interesting" road conditions on the Alcan, lol! Very slow going for the Spyder.
Slow but sure…. How’s the camping going? We have so many questions!! Can’t wait to get all the scoop.
@@miriambryant1896 going pretty well...we do a mix..cabin, tent, air BNB, Priceline motels, b&b...🤗💜
DO you prefer the full face to the half shell helmet? I have both and the half helmet allows me to see more, but the full face feels much safer.
Hello, What GPS and Mount did you add to the center handle bar? Most likely have the Dealer wire it for me. Thank you , Dennis
It is a stock system installed at BRP, using the Garmin Zumo.
LocTite that thing. In a pinch on the road you could use finger nail polish
What brand is your phone holder and where did you get it?
Its a RAM mount system, available on Amazon
colorful language you say, lol
