The more I hear about and see this engine the more I'm loving it. I desperately want this to be the first engine I collect once I solve my current space and money issues.
If Hornby or Bachmann realeased the D16 in GER condition with it’s blue livery, I guarantee that would sell. From the moment they were first introduced in 1900, people have loved the design of the Claud Hamiltons.
Amazing 4-4-0 steam locomotive! This is one of my favorite UK steam locomotives that’s a 4-4-0! I love the details on this locomotive! Great to see your doing a revisit to this! 👍
As far as I know, the only D16s to wear apple green were 8900 Claud Hamilton and the two Royal engines 8783 and 8787. I agree with you on the early variations I think Hornby should do the D15 and the D16/2 as those were definitely in apple green and they both have the decorative valances were the D16/3 (Hornby's model) does not. Also the Royal Clauds were of the D16/2 variety with the decorative valances and Belpaire fireboxes so those would definitely sell well if Hornby were to modify the existing tooling slightly. There's some color photos of 8787 and 8783 if you're interested. :)
I have to admit I love the Apple green livery I am very impressed with the haulage capability. One to look out for, when the shows and sales start again. Thanks Sam 🚂🚂🚂
This and the Hornby B12 are beautiful models and my favourite LNER locomotives. Hornby get criticised a lot, some of it deserved and some not but this shows what they can do. A lovely model with a real quality feel and finish.
Sam, Just a thought, but I think the missing inside cylinder detail are those red parts in the retail bag sent with the loco for the purchaser to fit if desired.
We used to have decently heavy locos from Hornby Dublo, such as their Bulleid rebuilt West Country class pacifics -- fantastic animals, massively powerful and absolutely bullet-proof. In 1961. 15.27 -- The 'grey' ring on the smokebox should be bright polished steel. This was actually a common feature on locos which had such a ring, especially on lovingly-tended passenger locos. An honest and thoughtful review as usual. Thanks for going to all this trouble for us.
That would be absolutely amazing - but a real challenge too... single driven axle with 3x non driven... a terrifying thing to design! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I've just checked the current Hornby catalogue, and the D16 - LNER black - is listed as a 3-pole motor. The B12's, on the other hand, do have a 5-pole motor
Hi Sam have you tried taking a Locomotive like this or maybe a cheaper one for your first attempt and upgrading all the fine detail with metal it makes such a difference, I have removed plastic pipe work, hand rails and replaced with metal changed the plastic coal for real coal put weights in etc. Give it a go and see what you come up with.
Hey Sam, I know this isn’t related to the video, but since you can make rolling stock that can actually brake on its own, maybe you could try a hand a making a working slip coach…
Sam - if you look at Hornby's "D16 the Journey "video the opening sequence shows a transparent boiler and there is clearly a small flywheel outboard of the worm, so there have been changes, at some point. I have a pair bought Sept 2015 but I've never opened them up. I did hear they will take the K1 motor - if you could get them
Hi Sam, just bought this loco! I appreciate that you go into such detail and give an unbiased assessment of each product. Since I live in Canada I can't go to the shop and see for myself, so your reviews enable me to make informed purchases. Keep up the good work, us New Worlders depend on you!
I have the B12 and the front guard irons don't get in the way on R2. I think you should fit them. Being big and red they are quite noticeable as they were on the prototypes
In regards to unpainted axles some locos don’t have them painted 76017 at the watercress line has 4 unpainted axles and 2 painted axles on the driving wheels
I was watching another channel where the prices of models today were compared with prices 30 years ago, and the conclusion was that £160 is actually not an uneasonable price to pay for a quality model. I was surprised! I guess if the models were still manufactured in the UK, prices would be far, far higher. The D16 is one of my favourites as well.
They sure would be much higher if produced in the UK... and if only new locos were £160 these days.... they're mostly way over £200 now, which is certainly not reasonable! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I'm not so convinced these days. With the massive hike in the cost of production and transport from China it can't be long before making things in the UK becomes more cost effective again, especially with the time savings that can be made.
Good thing you decided to re-review this it definitely needs those changes to be a really good engine but if it was cheaper it could be a very good starter engine
o my goodness, just last night I was looking at your old reviews on the d16 and I was considering buying one and then right after school I see this in my recommended.
This was AWESOME! I don't know if you remember me, but I am BallisticFire and JourneyThroughTheRails. I see your channel is still growing, and that's awesome! -Nick
Got the LNER lined black version of this (different running number to yours though) myself, this review made me get it out and it's now being ran in. As I completely forgot I owned one of these. It is running really nicely so far though. Managed to pick it up for £80 brand new a year and a half ago as well, so it's definitely got value for money in what you get. Cheers
Hi Sam, I have this model and I agree with all of your comments. I also have a sound fitted LNER black version and although not as visually attractive is still a great little model. I run DCC and In my case the black version works very well at low speeds. Keep up the good work!
The actual Claude Hamilton was designed by Charles Holden and used on the Great Eastern Railway as a locomotive to haul certain port trains around the Harwich area.
It is nice . Got a nice sheen to it . Always think it looks like a shortened B12 . I think the reason it doesn’t appear in -regrouping livery is that this loco was rebuilt by LNER , which this model represents . I’ve got the black BR one . Should have gone LNER green .
The D15 was first brought out by the Great Eastern Railway. It would have been in Cerulean Blue, and designed by one of the Holden family. I believe it was George Holden who designed this particular locomotive.
Hi Sam, following your last review of this loco I bought an LNER lined black D16 and must confess that although I loved the look of the loco - like yours it wasn't the best runner at slow speeds. However if anyone else is interested (and is quick) these they are available off Amazon at the moment for the bargain price of £78 in lined black - along with some other bargains (just picked up a B12 for £104 and a Peckett 0-4-0 for £55 :-)
Hi Sam, Guess that on DCC this loco would perform better at slow speed. All in all value for money. Hornby & Oxford Rail loco's are my favourite. Would indeed be a good candidate for an upgrade and pre-grouping liveries. Thanks for sharing this honest review ! Cheers, Filip
My first D16 was also poor at slow speed, so I sold it on (having clearly explained the poor slow speed control). I've since bought two second hand ones that were better runners - still not perfect, but better. I think part of the problem is just the gearing. With better gearing to give a lower top speed, the motor would rev highly and more smoothly at slow speeds.
I love mine, in BRITISH RAILWAYS black with the E prefix (as opposed to the 6 prefix). I'd be tempted by a 2nd if Hornby did the earlier types of Clauds. Although I should first get a new B12/3.
I like the LNER class D16 it has a nice finish to the color and the same whth the red lines on the under frame. Die cast gives a more proto typical model. I agree whith you the D16 is beautiful loco. 👍👍👍👍👍🇸🇪
Hi Sam nice loco. I have a br black one I got ages ago. Btw do you fit detail stuff on any of your models, or do you prefer to keep the detail bag intact? And do you fit crew to your locos?
I’ve had a D16 for about 3 years and it’s a lovely loco and has the same motor as yours . I also have a Dapol D class which is doing the same as yours , I did test it with a meter and the motor seemed ok I am wondering if it is a gear problem. I did send it back to Rails who said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it but they have said the same about their new gas turbine that can’t handle third radius curves . I’m going to send my D class to Dapol for repair , I have used them before and they were very good .
Yes, Sam - love these 4-4-0’s, so much so I bought a black one as greens were all sold out. But…..it just will not run smoothly (at any speed) forwards. It’s been back to Hornby twice, but they say it’s fine! It’s not and even though I’ve tried to clean and re-set it, it keeps moving forwards in jerks, but reverse is fine. Weird and very disappointing. I just have to run it in reverse with a freight load. Disappointing service from Hornby.
Hey Sam, I just noticed that when you were testing the locos performance, the 2nd set of wheels on the tender were stationary and were sliding along the tracks, I think you should have a look at that in case it causes any problems
Would you consider reviewing the new OO9 models that Bachmann revealed the other day? (I was astounded to see that their Quarry Hunslets locomotives could navigate a curve with an inner radius the size of a 2p coin, but) I'd specifically like to see a video on the new Ffestiniog Double Fairlies. It is undeniable that OO9 gauge is becoming increasingly popular and I think there would be a lot of interest in your thoughts. You'll undoubtedly mention these releases in your upcoming monthly news video, (given that it is news,) but I'd love to see more on this sort of thing in detail. Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos. You certainly bring a smile to my face when I see you've uploaded. Cheers.
Hey Sam im just wondering but my hornby tank engin like one you would find ina starter set is spraking on the rolling Road track I'm just asking if its normal because I only got the rolling Road
Hornby's previous LNER 4-4-0 was the D49 hunt class. Originally a tender drive "smart" model (same basic chassis for four different locomotives) it's still available as a railroad model, but loco drive these days.
Yaw dropping beauty, that was our first reaction. This is serious quality. Nothing can actually beat die-cast imho. Die-cast makes a loco look like the real machine in scale. Plastics and all of the modern paintings and methods just still can't touch it. The level of detailing is really fine enough. Again, it is the entire package doing the exquisite magic. If there is one thing I might always consider questionable is plastic running gear. I suppose you don't run your locos daily. Metal gearing will simply last forever no matter what. Perhaps they are not as quiet but that only adds to the seriousness of the model running on the track imho. However, apart from that, this is a yaw dropping model, specially for the money. She's stunning. Btw, quality of a motor is relative I should add. Crawling ability or durability... E.g, the old Fleischmann or Märklin disc collector motors don't do great crawls but last a lifetime and beyond with relatively little tlc.

Hey Sam, (change in email) in another video you said that you were going to review american rolling stock or passenger cars. Ex. Combines, coaches, domes, heavyweights, observation, baggage, Railroad post office (RPO), and full dome cars.
Did you have to find the box to put the model back inside it Sam? Aren’t tour locos normally on the shelf? Or are those the ones you don’t have the box for anymore?

As far as I know, the only D16s to wear apple green were 8900 Claud Hamilton and the two Royal engines 8783 and 8787. I agree with you on the early variations I think Hornby should do the D15 and the D16/2 as those were definitely in apple green and they both have the decorative valances were the D16/3 (Hornby's model) does not. Everytime I see this train on your channel I have to steel myself from buying one. Always looks great!
Also, tight package 😳
Hi Sam, You should say, "This loco" when it's a model you like and refer to it as "This thing" when you are going to slate it!
Yes, pre grouping, in GER blue!!
Could you review the new super detailed lner bogie coaches
This Is so Ironic Because We Have A D16 4-4-0 Class Of Locomotive In America, 2 Surviving Examples are PRR 1223 In Strasburg, & Wilmington & Western 98

I love 4-4-0 config for locos
