+PlagueOfGripes I agree - seeing the process of a game going through development, having problems and getting cancelled, with reference to specific things that went wrong, is definitely more interesting. However, I think it's also probably down to the amount of information that can be found out about the projects in question, as I have no doubt that a lot of cancelled projects are intentionally kept secret. By the way, hello, Plague.
+tltar253 True. Even though I didn't care much for Arkham Knight, I do hope a new one will be developed eventually. There is TONS of the Bat mythos that they've barely touched upon. I will never know peace until I see a cool version of the Zebra-Man.
I'll forever remember them for Battlezone 2. The first game for which I bought a new computer so I'll be able to play it (the second was Rome Total War), and didn't regret it for a second.
+madasylum1 I blame the new generation consoles. This is the mindset of a developer... Publisher: "RELEASE THE GODDAMN GAME" Developer: "But it's full of bugs..." Publisher: "CAN'T YOU JUST PATCH IT A MONTH AFTER IT'S RELEASE?!" Developer: "Ohhh yeah. We can update!" *Update fixes half bugs*
I hate when a company feels they have to release a movie based game to collide with the release date of the film. Goldeneye came out 2 years after the film and that is named the best game based off a movie. Also I remember reading that Ledger had recorded lines for this game but don't know how true that is.
Of course nowadays, titles move in and out of the public eye much quicker than when Goldeneye was released. But yes, rushing for release dates = terrible adaptations. A movie isn't complete until its complete, and a game based on it should be based on the complete state, so having them release simultaneously is a recipe for disaster.
+KevinT1149 I think it has more to do with how each contract is made, for instance in this video it's said that their rights to "use" the movie would run out in december of that year, making it impossible to release it afterwards, although I do agree with you that it needs more time to be a good game
Yeah it was out 2 years after the movie but Rare really pushed the deadline for the game, I remerber reading when Nintendo got the beta version of the game it was so buggy they say to Rare to stop the project that there was no way they fix bugs in time. So Rare payed the project theyselfs
+KevinT1149 i unfortunately have to disagree, i mean just TRY and play goldeneye today, it is probably one of the most outdated games i've ever played.

Jeez that's a lot to program, and being peer pressured to release the game that's not finished yet then people hate on it because infinite storage space for frame rate and debugging doesn't exist. Like valve working on half life 3 or chapter 2 part 2. Somebody is trying to come up with new game mechanics, a compelling script fans won't hate, original puzzles, and program that.
Man, this video was kind of heart breaking. I really feel for the developers who busted their asses to salvage this thing just to get their studio destroyed by EA.
+Tank207 I don't think EA is to blame in this case. They bought the license with a strict deadline already and gave them a lot of resourses to achieve the goal, it's just that there were a lot of development problems. Even tough EA has done some dickish things, you can't blame them for shutting the studio down after losing that much money (and they did offer the chance to relocate). This would have happened no matter what publisher it was.
It's not EA's fault, they should have picked another engine and rebuild with it, it would have given them time to finish the game instead of spending a year trying to stabilize an engine that they did not understand. Nobody's to blame but those stubborn Pandemic developpers. But as usual it's easy (and brainless, idiotic), to blame EA like a sheep following the hating EA trend.

This is why developers shouldn't be rushed to have a game adaption of movies. Even when they do come out, they tend to be mediocre anyway. I am curious if this cancelled game had any influence on Batman: Arkham Asylum, though. Specifically, the idea of a dark, open world, stealth action Batman game.
+Ben Herschell well the only reservation id have hearing that are legally how the assets transferred considering the legalities and red tape in the way plus the licencing, or maybe it was just the concepts that transferred?
+jedimasterpickle3 Honestly, I find most movie tie-in games aren't any good. Except for Spider-Man 2 and Speed Racer, there hasn't been one that really got my attention.
+jedimasterpickle3 I like the fact when we had the game for the original Amazing Spider-Man film in 2012 it wasn't a straight take on the movie but was actually a sequel using what the film established whilst making all the new additions logical, and it worked really well as a result. Too bad the follow up game for ASM2 sucked.
With the Arkham series now done, they should do a series of games based in the world of Nolan's trilogy. Just imagine the gameplay of that series put into the world of the Dark Knight. We could get a Heath Ledger Joker, Tom Hardy Bane, Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow, Hathaway's Catwoman and maybe TDK trilogy-inspired designs for new villains like Penguin, Riddler or others. It would be amazing!
I was surprised how great of a game it was! I was already clear out on PS4. I decided to order it for PS2. Have played through it three times now! Great movie game! Way underrated.

When you realise Batman Begins was on the PS2. When you realise you haven't had a PS2 for 5 years. When you realise that game is 8 years old. When you realize you've been spelling "realize" wrong. I'm getting too old for this...
+Gearshifter09 Realise is the correct spelling outside of North America. The word was originally Realize everywhere, but late in the 19th century, it changed to realise very quickly outside of North America. So both are correct, except in North America where only realize is correct.
This game actually looked like it had potential. The character models looked fantastic, even down to the stock NPC's. As much as I do love the Arkham games, an open world Batman game in a more realistic/less cartoony city would've actually been pretty cool. The Arkham games can sometimes feel like a slightly more realistic Schumacher Gotham, while TDK series is straight up Chicago/Pittsburgh/actual cities.
This definitely would've been an amazing game. I thought "Batman Begins" was done very well. It's sad that "The Dark Knight" video game never got to see a release. I remember hearing about it,around the same time as the movie. After "Arkham Asylum" was announced,I think people pretty much forgot about this game and had their eyes and attention on "Arkham".
This video always makes me wonder how a trailer for Arkham Asylum ended up on my Dark Knight DVD. Maybe just a later DVD build with different trailers, does that happen? It's also kind of eerie how closely the concept resembled Arkham Knight, just with a movie tie in skin.
I love these little mini-documentaries about cancelled games. Keep making them please. It's so weird that Batman Begins was the only one to get an AAA game out of the whole trilogy. They should have kept it linear goddamn it. But like Liam said, the issue was time. EA just didn't give them enough.

yeah. I wish they just used the old engine kinda like rocksteady on arkham knight (but its still buggy) or it might ended up like ac unity (at launch).

That literally doesn’t stop from someone making a game from something they and others will like, plain and simple. The Dark Knight Video Game (2024) can still happen if people/companies stop being greedy, stupid or scared. And it would make a lot of money if done right. I don’t know about you but a game where you play as Christian Bale’s Batman fighting against his version of Joker and gliding around his world and using a different Batmobile that isn’t a tank but a car with many gadgets and weaponry including a built in bat-bike thing, is already different unique and has potential to be entertaining. It would just be Arkham Knight just not in the Arkham Series or style if that makes sense. Kinda like Gotham Knights except has more potential to be great
I really love learning about stuff like this. Just seeing what was going on behind the scenes can sometimes be far more interesting than the final product. Makes me miss the retrospectives GameTrailers made as they went into detail as to how a game came to exist, not just what that game was like to play (and now the idea of DYKG doing franchise retrospectives and timelines really interests me).
The Arkham series was developed by Warner Bros Studios, who sold previously the rights to Batman games to EA, but after the contract expired, they could make whatever they wanted. They probably anticipated the moment the contract would expire and started making a game before that. EA can't sue them for making a game with their rights as long as they don't fill in a patent or do anything official to show it to the public.
Can anyone imagine the horror if that Batman game contract with EA didn't expire. Arkham would have never happened and EA would be making Batman games.
Huh, really interesting to hear how the development of this game went down. Really feel sorry for the devs. Really enjoyed this guys! +DidYouKnowGaming?
2008-2009 huh? Well it was a necessary sacrifice... ;) And if Pandemic (the real Star Wars Battlefront games!...) had to die so the Arkham Trilogy can be born, Well it worth it! ^^ Plus Rockstady listened to you Nolan's fans: they made the suit and "batmobile" of The Dark Knight in Arkham Knight...
shadowprince101 I was being serious. I don't like movie based video games. They always suck, and makes me wish they would have focused on their own story, rather than one I already see coming.
Really enjoyed that documentary vibe, man. Great stuff! Would have been interesting to see if they'd been able to complete it within a better time frame. I've just gotten around to beating Arkham Knight, so as soon as I saw this pop up I knew I had to watch it!
+Psycho Bastard ...no. Eidos Interactive owned publishing rights to make a Batman video game at the time, but didn't have anything planned until the TDK project was canned. As soon as word got out, they hired Rocksteady to develop a Batman game, and thus Arkham Asylum was born.
I had a friend working on the game. He was working on the backgrounds. And even leaked me some images of what he was working on. He didn't tell me what the title was until they had announced it. He was one of the employees that went to LA to finish Saboteur. Apparently the accommodation they stayed in was pretty fancy.

Makes me miss the retrospectives GameTrailers made as they went into detail as to how a game came to exist, not just what that game was like to play (and now the idea of DYKG doing franchise retrospectives and timelines really interests me).
So they tried to make, essentially, an Arkham City before the Arkham series ever existed. Wow. That's insane.
revive this game! complete the unfinished job..
I was thinking the same thing

Could have been a great game. Well, we have the batman arkham games, so im not complaining.
I Always Thought That Video Game Developers Waited Until They've Seen The Full Finished Movie Before Making The Video Game(s)
I thought there weren't any Dark Knight games because of the Arkham Series?
The Arkham series was developed by Warner Bros Studios, who sold previously the rights to Batman games to EA, but after the contract expired, they could make whatever they wanted. They probably anticipated the moment the contract would expire and started making a game before that. EA can't sue them for making a game with their rights as long as they don't fill in a patent or do anything official to show it to the public.
Batman AA was made because of Dark Knight videogame was not made.
just realised why this gave me a little nostalgia. this show reminds of the late great all your history
You know the story is gonna be a tragedy if EA is involved
How awesome would it have been for Heath Ledger's Joker to be in a video game!!! Such a shame it never got to happen.
I made the levels.
never got the hate for the Batman Begins game. I remember it being pretty fun. It's been years though, so who knows
Can anyone imagine the horror if that Batman game contract with EA didn't expire. Arkham would have never happened and EA would be making Batman games.
Oh, my god...I can't even imagine! ;_;
Dear god, that really put this in perspective for me. The TDK game was a worthy sacrifice after all! xD
Jesus Christ, imagine having to spend money to get more gadgets.
I think the channel should focus more on these in depth lore videos they're awesome and amazing
This video had a lot of d-dale.
Huh, really interesting to hear how the development of this game went down. Really feel sorry for the devs. Really enjoyed this guys! +DidYouKnowGaming?
2008-2009 huh? Well it was a necessary sacrifice... ;)
And if Pandemic (the real Star Wars Battlefront games!...) had to die so the Arkham Trilogy can be born,
Well it worth it! ^^
Plus Rockstady listened to you Nolan's fans: they made the suit and "batmobile" of The Dark Knight in Arkham Knight...
And this failed game led to the creation of the Batman Arkham series
If this game wasn't cancelled, we wouldn't have got Arkham Asylum. We should be happy it got cancelled.
Igor19485 Asylum was in development when this was also in development
Yo...yall should keep doing these
this proves it then... EA is the Worst Company
I really have been liking the new format. Keep it up!
I have never played a game based on a movie that was good... ever...
Lerios didn't really care for it.
+Anthony Dunlap spider-man 2 ?
shadowprince101 nope. I don't like playing a game of a movie I just watched.
***** now you're just basically saying no to everything for the sake of it at this point lmao
shadowprince101 I was being serious.
Thanks EA for Arkham Asylum!
+Batfreak Warner Bros. and Rocksteady gave us Arkham Asylum, not EA
+MagnificentBoshtet Yes they did and it never would have happened if the TDK game wasn't cancelled.
+Batfreak not really they would still be out if tdk was released
+Psycho Bastard ...no. Eidos Interactive owned publishing rights to make a Batman video game at the time, but didn't have anything planned until the TDK project was canned. As soon as word got out, they hired Rocksteady to develop a Batman game, and thus Arkham Asylum was born.
roger that but still beside arkham games was even a batman steampunk one that was cancelled and wasn't in project by rocksteady
Oh Pandemic... you make my childhood fun as hell.
that sucks
Thought it had something to do with movie goers who got killed viewing it. Thought he was the joker. Maybe thats a different movie.
My dad actually worked on this game
Great video, I really love background information like this and it seems you have a lot more to check out. Keep up the creativity! :)
FUCK EA
oh man i never realized Pandemic had been closed :( they were one of my favorites growing up
I recall the chanel having a patreon, so it would be really helpfull for you to mention that in the video or even in the description.
I had a friend working on the game. He was working on the backgrounds. And even leaked me some images of what he was working on. He didn't tell me what the title was until they had announced it.
He was one of the employees that went to LA to finish Saboteur. Apparently the accommodation they stayed in was pretty fancy.
And then Arkham Asylum came out the following year and gave us the Batman game we didn't deserve, but the one we needed.
I'm glad we got Arkham Asylum instead.
Arkham Asylum 🗑️
Origins ✅
why batman the dark knight video game got cancelled?
The video LITERALLY explained the reason behind its cancellation...
bruh
@@drunkencel4091 Ok.
Even though the Arkham Series is legendary, I would have loved to have played a Dark Knight game,
