There were no black children here in London during the Second World War. I was here as a tiny baby and later my school had no black children in fact, the first time I saw a black African person was when I was about seven years old, while I was out on a bus going shopping to Brixton with my mother. That was just one black person…I didn’t see any more until my secondary school and there we had one Nigerian friend who was in our year. She was the only person of colour until an explosion of many pupils entered the school from Jamaica, and this was because my school was nearer to the Brixton area where many settled in the late 50’s. Unfortunately, I witnessed many fights between them in the school, something that had never occurred before, and sadly later in the late 60’s, the school had to close. It was no longer a true comprehensive and had become very rough, many teachers just left and the education had failed.
I was born in 1951 in Leytonstone and I remember seeing my first black person when I was about 9 years old. he approached my friends and I who were playing cricket in the street ,and asked us the location of our local teaching hospital . Looking back I think now he was probably an African student.

The Imperial War Museum display on the Blitz shows dozens of black children supposedly being evacuated from the East End in 1940.
The pictures were in fact taken in Hastings and Birmingham in 1958.

For Bloomsbury, anything remotely to do with diversity, slavery and Africa is a golden ticket, it doesn't have to be true. They see only profit and tick boxing as uneducated buyers purchase their 'histories' and enthusiastically spread the gospel of Woke. Like the BBC, they thrive on their dishonesty (for the moment) but have lost all credibility as a serious publisher with standards and mores. The short-term rush to publish any Woke nonsense and make a quick buck guarantees their longer-term downfall. It'll come sooner than they think, and no doubt new management will try and turn them back into a serious and respected publisher, but that will be far too late to achieve.

I'm not sure whether publishers even employ such people now, judging by the amount of typos and other errors that seem to be commonplace in so many books today. Presumably they've been let go in order to make room for sensitivity readers.

There's an interview with the woman "Atanuke" that wrote this book on RUclips, (so far with only 18 views) Her childish resentment is visible all over it. She's being interviewed by two white older women, they spend the whole thing DESPERATELY not saying anything to step on her toes. As a result, everything they say has to be either a compliment or a fawning comment which they duly deliver. And she receives this impassively, with an "of course, and your point is?…" attitude.
The problem seems to be that she has no idea of objective facts whatever, or respect for the concept: "Facts" are merely things that people can claim, depending on who has a voice. It's all about power; if the facts you discover don't suit you, you make them up, thats fine. To me its her own desire for more power, projected onto the world around her as she cannot believe anyone could be different. Some peoples self-loathing is so acute, you cant help but be left wondering about their moral character.

I'm brown skinned born British and had a black friend in the 80s who kept banging on about Black history and desperate to point out things that black people invented or how blacks were being neglected in society and a lot of the woke trash we are suffering now and he had a massive chip on his shoulder about it all, nice guy but in the end it got too much and I had to distance myself from it as I didnt like the way he was creating divisions between blacks and whites in his beliefs and I didnt want it running off on me as most of my family are white. I have no time for any of this woke nonsense, its never been easier to be dark skinned in the UK and this has all gone way too far.

It was sad to read the number of "famous" black people on the Amazon site who allegedly said things like "I wish I had had this book when I was at school". Wishing that they had a book full of lies tells you something about their character.

A quick search on the Internet to find credible 'reviews', has scarce results - The Guardian has it in 'Best new picture books' with a generic blurb and no real detail. Other reaction is naively partisan, where it is descibed as, "Filling the information gap," along with, "An eye-opening story of Britain, focusing on a part of our past that has mostly been left out of the history books."

I liked history programmes by Lucy Wordsley - until a day or two they were showing a programme about the Blitz (which I hadn't known was on, and wouldn't normally watch war films as they make me too upset). However, I did watch about two minutes because they were interviewing a black fella who has a typical W African Bantu accent, speaking as though his forebears were here at the time. It is a slim possibility as there were a tiny few blacks here during the Blitz. My father saw one for the first time in the early 1930's but not again until after the Windrush. However, as I mentioned he had a clear West African accent. I turned over before I became too annoyed. I value my equilibrium and good blood pressure.
There was actually one known black fireman in the Blitz - his photo's used in a current advert on TV (rather than the thousands of firefighters who were white British).
We primitive ⬜people should be grateful this race of architects and Scientists want to live amongst us and share their knowledge amongst us inferiors. 👍

I was raised in a very diverse part of SE London , but it wasn't always like that . Not one black child at all in my primary school . One West Indian lad did arrive later and ended up being my brothers best mate ,he was a good lad . It was so rare to see a black face then that kids use to follow them out of curiosity sometimes . It amazes me that the propagandists think they can get away with such lies and misinformation , it is so easy to disprove , just look at old news footage or films .

Me too, born in 1962 and grew up in Catford. One black kid in my year at primary school (out of 60 kids) then two out of 90 at grammar school. If I look at the Website of the school that sits on the site of my old school today it looks like it's 80% ethnic minorities (or as they should now be called ethnic majorities).
I was last in Catford five or six years ago and I couldn't get out of it quickly enough. Unrecognisable.

Every time a book such as this is published I wonder where the hell our historians are and why they are not decrying such lies and falsehoods publicly. Established, prominent and published historians, such as Mary Beard, are utterly silent on the blatant misrepresentations of David Olusoga (for example), even appearing alongside in high-profile BBC series.
When Martin Bernal published his 'Black Athena' book (and follow-ups) arguing (predominantly linguistically) for an afro-asiatic foundational influence on Greek myth, classicists argued their case against his (somewhat fantastical and evidence-lacking) thesis. Debates were held. Counter-theory books were published. Opinions aired. Ultimately, the thesis was discredited.
How academia has fallen since the late 80's.

When you see statues being toppled, as they have been throughout the west, a small minority being represented in almost every commercial, and being passed off as though they are the indigenous inhabitants, as is also happening in many western countries (the Scandinavian Airlines commercial "what is truly Scandinavian" "Viking" still shocks me), and foreigners being given preferential treatment over a country's own citizens it's not hard to imagine that history is being rewritten.

Not like that now I'm afraid yours and mine were of a bygone era of how we knew it. Schools now are a mix of everything got to cater for all the worlds cultures and languages before our own British kids, Britain was built by our white ancestors in history that was created over centuries. It’s really quite astonishing how much black people apparently did to build and defend Britain, especially considering there was barely a black person to be seen anywhere in my youth. What few there were must’ve been almost 😂incredibly industrious and talented!
The reviews on Amazon are, thankfully, mostly unappreciative at least. We can be sure that the sales are artificially boosted by libraries and schools across the land ordering multiple copies. I do believe this book is now getting the attention it deserves, articles in the press and widespread exposure not just in this place. These writers, publishers and reviewers are all on the Diversity & Inclusion grift.

I worked in agriculture for over 50 years as a agricultural engineer blacksmith and never have I met a person of colour on the land or who own the farm

She forgot to consider that video cameras were already in existence during the World Wars and documentaries still show on tv about them almost daily on channels like Yesterday. There's a lot of footage in those shows of soldiers, civilians and casaulties. Maybe it's because I haven't watched one of those in a while but I don't recall seeing any africans in the footage at all

My mother grew up in WW2 London. She could not recall ever seeing a black person in London at that time
'Black farmers' had me rolling! It wasn't that long ago a minibus load of black Londoners were hitting the headlines with the declaration 'The countryside is racist'. The "truth" about the Stephen Lawrence murder remains elusive though. If those who attacked and murdered him did indeed do so solely motivated by racial discrimination why, then, did they not also murder Lawrence's friend who was also black?

Simon - everything you say is true and accords with my understanding of British history - I, too, am a history buff. So I decided to go onto Amazon to warn prospective purchasers that this is a work of pure fantasy. There were already several reviews in that vein and 86% of reviewers had given it only 1 star. But Amazon would not allow me to leave a review, saying: "Amazon has noticed unusual reviewing activity on this product. Due to this activity, we have limited this product to verified purchase reviews.". I would hardly describe the constructively negative reviews as "unusual reviewing activity" but I suppose that Amazon was worried that the book would stop being a best seller if the only reviews were negative. So, now the only people allowed to give reviews are those who are more likely to give 5 star reviews! You couldn't make it up!

I am originally from Romania but it is sad what the UK has become..I hope that british people will learn to be more proud about themselves..I still respect English people a lot for their clarity of thinking but most seem depressed about current affairs
I can remember when I was at school in the 1960s and early 1970s, there was no black pupils at infants school, one in my junior school and none in my secondary school. But my generation will soon be gone and then there will be nobody left who knows it's a lie. Anyone from future generations will still be able to find out from careful study of old photos etc. but no doubt they will be howled down by the so-called experts.

The "inconvenient" handbag strap supposedly "lost" as evidence for 20+ years at the Lawrence murder scene - and the _eventual_ subsequent claim that it was "part of a weapon" - even though it was covered with female DNA - and absolutely NO trace of the suspects' DNA (and I can only suppose was also carrying Stephen's DNA), leads me to only one possible conclusion about what _really_ happened that night...

I emailed Bloomsbury and told them what I think about it, and I urge everyone on here to do the same. I suggested they should withdraw the book and issue a public apology, but obviously I'm not holding my breath.
I did that a few days back, and took myself off their mailing list. I told them I would never buy another of their books because I could no longer trust their books to be accurate. Haven't had an answer yet.
