A big point I feel needs to be addressed is that the “party” isn’t just the music. Kendrick, Lecrae, and Dee-1 are also calling out the PEOPLE in the industry, their character, and how it has impacted the industry and listeners.

Artists used to go out their way to get their music played by a radio dj. That is how a lot of artists got to be so big. Shaggy is a good example. His career was built from one dj playing his music. I don’t know when the idea became you have to be big to be played on radio. Was a time when people called and requested songs or the dj liked something and played it on air or in the club.

He was one of the last award winners, and he said, "Glory to God, y'all believe in God, right?" and shamed the room. Problem is DJs don't have the POWER to just play anything. Them program directors know which records get spins and the heat check all of them joints to make sure the agenda will be pushed. DJ esp ones on thr prime slot play the program radio joints. Going off script could get you fired. All them ad slots and companies ain't pay for you to spin some real hip hop joints for masses. That's why DJs be afraid 😨 to take risks. If a handful just played whatever in the prime slots you'll see a shift but that probably won't happen unless they unify. Can't just be a one off situation then back to regular schedule programming.

@@dn30001 of course it's a business. Real hiphop is dope but does it make money 💰 for the corporations??? Kanye put out Jesus walks 🚶‍♂️, it blew up, we got a whole era off new blog era/conscious MCs (Lupe, kendrick, cole, cool kids, chance the rapper, etc) . I like kendrick but idk if he got enough of a movement to really shift the game. Maybe PGlang can be that for the near future, but it takes more then a few MCs. Got to be collection like how Ye did indirectly.

@jman1562001 lets be clear..the MAIN objective to "the business" is to destabilize any type of balance first and foremost. So much money is being put INTO portaying black degenerative behavior in the music as opposed to pulling money OUT of it. This is why your mention of Jesus Walks is a great point of how that subgenre can generate money....but they purposely avoid those type of records.

Conscious music have never been a balanced in the normal grouping to Rap like “Trap Music” & “Gangsta Rap”. So why yall tripping on those two brothaz that finally getting shine..?

The problem is no conscious mainstream rap artist, except one or two I can readily think of has found balance between having a meaningful message while creating effortlessly listenable music. It’s almost like every lane of hip hop/hip hop artist has evolved except the conscious artist. Some people don’t want to think ultra deep while dissecting bars, others do. Some people need to feel something to trigger thoughts. A lot of conscious rap artist are strictly mental with no soul and it come off as preachy or pretentious. Some artist truly have elevated to a higher level of consciousness in real life and most listeners just can’t relate. That’s ultimately key to the balance, they have to make it relatable, realize who the audience is and make it sound good. If there’s no balance then it’s ultimately fallen in deaf ears excluding the people that solely prefer that style. Kendrick more times than few makes music that true is artistic, but doesn’t reach and hit home the way Pac did back in the day where it truly reached the community and no one disputed it or him. You don’t feel a lot of what Kendrick is saying, his thoughts are expressed very well and creatively but a lot of it is something I hear a lot of people say they don’t like how it sounds or it’s all the same at this point. Imagine ’Not Like Us’ but he was saying conscious things. It’s not like he’s been doing the old Kanye ‘All Falls Down’ or ‘Jesus Walks’ type conscious but successful records that majority of people like. His balance is off and I don’t think he really wants his messages delivered to who needs to hear it, so it’s coded. I currently think J Cole is the best overall conscious mainstream pure hip hop artist that’s out. You get what you need from him but also what you want. He has commercial songs that are of more conscious or self aware content while also building majority of his albums around the same and even more detailed consciousness, you relate to how he delivers his thoughts and because of that you feel it more to me imo, it may not be as deep or artistic but I think that’s what makes his delivery near perfect. It’s artist enough where you relive his talent and skill, it’s sounds good so it has replay value which I think gets the content across to more people repeatedly. Some other notable ones were mentioned like Wale, Big Sean, another was ‘College Dropout’ Kanye, Lupe, Common even to some degree with ‘I used to Love HER’, ‘The Light’, ‘The Corner’ and ‘The Food’. It’s more enjoyable to listen to while receiving a message.

If we take it back to mid 90s (93-96) i say Hip Hop was at its most balanced radio wise or commercially cuz at that time you have Tribe, Pac, Snoop, Cube, Dre,, Nas, Biggie, Wu Tang, Fugees, De La, Redman, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Outkast, LL, Da Brat, Lil Kim, Foxy, Salt N Pepa, Jay, Scarface, E-40, Common etc. All successful platinum or gold all aharing the same space all different styles and that was just the radio then now its all one sided so it makes all Hip Hop look one way when its not but there not pushing the options
