Hey Mark this video was an immense help and value to me! This was one of the most complete explanations I've ever heard on the subject. thanks to this video i just learned what i was doing wrong when setting up my scope for my eye. This time i set the rifle in a vice with the cross hair on a tree exactly 200 yards away. Focused my parallax until there was no shift when moving my eye, THEN focused the eye piece to be 100% clear for me. HUGE improvement as i have never been able to 100% have the target and crosshair PERFECTLY in focus. I have perfect vision and just always thought this was normal. For one of the other to be somewhat out of focus. Mad my cheap lil swfa 10x 1000x better than i thought it was. Bet that is one extra step that will improve my hit count while learning moa and scope dialing.

Great explanations (parallax error, target focus & reticle focus with the eye piece) . Thanks for sharing. I bought 2 budget priced optics from a particular company ($250 & $600) and I couldn't figure out why the $250 optic looked so much better to me when a friend who is much more familiar with optics clearly saw the $600 scope as the better. The $250 scope had a diopter range of [-3 to +3] & the $600 scope's diopter range was only [-2 to +2]. The optimal setting for my vision is close to (-3) which is having the Eye Piece all the way in or flush with the scope body (factory default). The optimal setting for his vision is nearly 1/2 way or approximately zero. What a costly way to learn to check for diopter range when shopping for a scope. Now I know.

Using the scope shadow to check center is a fantastic tip! I have in the past had cheap scopes that didnt have parallax adjustment, wish I knew about that tip back then!

Just been looking for a really good explanationa dn you guys nailed it. Thansk Mark. The best bit was pointing out the need to be "disconnected" from the rifle - common sens ewhen you think about it but I hadn't been and in the UK only getting to shoot high calibre once a month, you need to get everything in plave before you hit the range ! Keep the videos coming guys, I thought you'd stopped as I'd seen pretty much everything else.

Back when I was a Knight’s Armament dealer, I got to know their primary shooter, who did the qualification testing for most of their MK 11 Mod 0 rifles. He once told me that when doing demo shoots for military or LE customers, he could always determine who was a real shooter by whether or not they did a parallax check before shooting.

In my early days of shooting when all I had was my .22 magnum with a Niko sterling 4x32 scope I would machine a piece of perspex to fit perfectly in the scope eye piece with a tiny hole or cross hare in the centre of it. I would line that up with my reticle to eliminate parallax error.

wow that's crazy to think how many people have spent thousands on load development when it was just the parallax off center. I finally saved up for a nice long range scope and it wasn't shooting as good as I expected at 100m. I never liked that you have to adjust the parallax and I never knew how to adjust it. Now I do. thank you Mark

I got to say that is a good explanation of Parallax. You talked about focus and eye relief. Back in the early 80's I hunted varmints a lot at night. Work all day and well need that extra money. Long story short I learned to shoot with both eyes open. That of course changes the what I call get a full scope.( no shadows ) Well, I made different adjustment all over. Changed the eye relief just a little actually, then the focus. When I make any changes in these areas I start out on a clean wall with just a color push pin and I get in the scope and out. I do this as I throw down to shoot. I don't study it to much. I see, I get out and wait. After a few of those I make some adjustment and recheck. I always want to be able to shoulder and throw down and see the clearest and fullest scope image with both eyes open as possible. Then I check in the dark with a light from off to the side that is spotting the wall of a barn or even a post in front of a barn or some kind of object where you can tell if your focus is still like you want and the Fullness is still as you had it. Normally its the same. I also check at different power levels and double check. Well the big pay off. Lots more exciting, and the other eye is being trained to see another target. Takes a bit to learn this but it is a RUSH> man its cool when you have taken time to get several packs of coyotes in a big open field and you never turn a light on, then boom there it is, gun up, the roll makes the mercury switch turn the light on and those shots or just wow. Not to brag but 5 for 5 almost continuous. 100 to 300 yard every time. Money in the bank.
It was after a few weeks I got the hang of it, I found a buddy that like to shoot. So we would both go out and of course he started my new style. The best part was he is a lefty and me a righty, so the team effort he working left to right and me right to left would get us 8 kills out of 10 shots on out average after he got the hang of it.
With out going in to more of the hunting details and such, My point is Take your time setting up. Your focus and style is very important. That rush in my day for the money was actually the most fun I ever had. We was at it almost every night and made good money and saved a lot of baby calves and sheep from these Coyotes mostly. Hey, these coyotes or smart but they or dumb and curious to. By the way, I had a Ruger M77 22-250 with a Weaver 3x9 Low light with fine duplex. Now key in the imagination when you make those running longer shots, like 585 away from you. It was fun. Oh, the scope light was popular in the late 70 and 80's. It was light weight, face about like a standard old DD battery flash light and worked on 9 volt with a mercury switch. I forget the name but I can not find that light today. I personally do not like the pressure switch or the heavier lights. I don't do color lights either. If anyone runs across the type I am talking about, could you send me a link. The Scope shadow Trick was something I discovered myself when dealing with cheaper scopes. Even I shoot with top of the line scopes nowadays, I still check the shadows before I shoot 😀

Great video, never trust the numbers on the parrallax turrets !
Target image clear = good parallax turret setting,
Reticle image crisp without effort = good eyepiece setting (perfect if the target image is also clear with no parallax error)

Clear image is not a good way to do it, the head wiggle is correct.

Proof of an expert ELR shooter @10:59 Calls 1500 yds "Normal" range....LOL ! Great advice as usual. Edit: I'm just a deer hunter, but I discovered a while back the "circle". I call it the peep method, and it works pretty well for me. You have make a quick shot sometimes while hunting and in that scenario it works great.

My question is, are you more partial to the N-F or is it another reason that you choose to use the N-F over the G2 for this video? Thanks.
Thanks Ken, both great scopes and all scopes need this attention, as for video I just wanted a rifle there to show some of what I was talking about, scope brand didn't matter, as for the G2 it is a great ELR scope but the reticle would been too fine for these close range demonstrations, cheers
