I've been struggling to find pickled herring (just can't get myself to like the German style after getting used with Ahti/Abba/Boy), but this makes me want to build a brännvinsbord 😃 The salmon caviar is fantastic. Great video, thank you!
I see pickled herring in stores in the US, but it's usually more the German style ( roll mops) Only place that I've found matjes herring was IKEA and closest one to me is over 400 miles away.
@cookiegirl2cookie197 So one of the most unexpected places where I found pickled herring was a Kosher supermarket. I live in an area that has a sizable Orthodox Jewish population. I think they originate from Poland, the Baltics and Ukraine, so it kinda makes sense that they would have similar foods.
@finnishyourplate Not here. Mainly Scandinavian and Finnish but in third and fourth generation so they still make pulla and pancake put there really isn't any imports coming.I was kind of thinking of going to west side of state in search of lute Fisk but needs to be seen... I just spotted some herring on Etsy so I ordered it. The price wasn't too bad (not great, but cheap enough so I can have some for my rosolli and rye bread)
Thank you! That reminded me: I wanted to try making vorschmack, but kept forgetting. I know that at least some varieties of it are considered traditional Finnish dishes. Would it be uncommon to have it on a Christmas/New Year's table?
Usually most new year eve'sh dish is considered boiled frankfurters with potato salad and rosolli with pickled herrings but I wouldn't mind vorschmack as a main dish. Vorschmack became famous in Finland mostly by being the absolute favorite dish of The President and Marshall of Finland Mannerheim.
Oh interesting! I wouldn't say it's common, but it is associated with very fancy dining for sure. I once ordered some from Finland, my first time eating it, and it was delicious.
Itse tekisin ehkä mieluummin kanapeita noista, tiekkö sillipala per sipsi ja sitte kermaavaahtomätiä, joko siihen palan päälle tai alle, ja ehkä vielä joku vehreempi tillin rimpsu koristeeksi.

@finnishyourplate I bet you could find some Scandinavian type anjovies/sprats for Janssonin kiusaus in those markets too.
@cookiegirl2cookie197 Yes absolutely! I've also seen sprats in stores that have Baltic groceries.

Hyvä idea, kiitos!
