good question, interesting. thing about Filson (especially black) their colors vary slightly over the years. Mine is a more matte black from few years back, the new ones look darker sheen black. Regardless they do wear in well, not as noticeable as the brown (especially the oils that make it darker). BUT when worn well and worked in the black is that much more rewarding with age. Thanks for the review. This is the only video that I could find on this jacket. Nice job. I ended up purchasing the same one. Hopefully this tin cloth Everyone seems to love lives up to the hype. It definitely doesn’t lack in style. I love the work style especially vintage American work style. I seen you had a video on Red wing iron rangers. I’m definitely going to check that out. Thanks again for the video.
Hi Phil, thanks for watching and commenting. It’s a very well made jacket, I’m sure that you will be happy with the purchase! Gets better the more you wear it.
When you first got it was it really rigid like it could stand up on it's own and you could fold parts of it and it would stay contorted? I tried the P&Co wayfare and it was like that. Like you felt like you could scrape the wax of and like it would transfer onto everything it touched? Totally different to something like a Halley Stephenson like a Belstaff jacket which feels very dry and supple. It's pretty cheeky to move production to Bangladesh and keep upping the price of their products too.
Hi mate! To answer your question, when I got the SLC I could have stood the jacket up, however the rigidity was not that of my Bradley Mountain. Filson uses their own wax to coat their garments. I’m not an expert in the field but the wax softened very quickly on my Filson. If you like the jacket you could rewax it anytime you like. If I was going to rewax I would buy Otter Wax bars and apply that to the SLC. Bradley Mountain uses Otter Wax and it is really long lasting and gives excellent water repellency.
So I'm really considering getting Filson's Single Mackinaw Cruiser. I've come across several comments recently saying in short that: 1) Filson recently got bought out and their quality has since gone downhill while their prices have climbed; 2) that the Mackinaw jacket in particular is not as thick and thus as warm as the same jackets of the past. Any thoughts or personal experience about these 2 comments from anyone? Thanks in advance. And I appreciate your wool clothing reviews!
Hi Wolf, I too have seen the comments around being bought and quality etc. I think that with volume sales and high demand it is inevitable that something has to give. 1) I’m not sure if they have been bought or not. Their prices are expensive. Worth the money? I guess that’s up to the individual. Unfortunately for Filson and the consumer they have been around so long they have comparisons against previous generation products. 2) Id tend to believe that the jacket is not as thick / warm. They don’t have anything to prove, and as long as it’s good enough to bring the $ in. Like my grandpa used to say - “don’t make em like they used to”. Might have been onto something there. A couple alternatives to have a look at - Swanndri - NZ company and Bradley Mountain for waxed cotton jackets. Thanks for watching and commenting
I have both the single and double mackinaw. The single I purchased 3 years ago and the double is over 20 yrs old (still looks brand new). Absolutely amazing jackets. The single is worn down to -10 and anything lower than that I reach for the double. -30 with a fleece underneath and I'm cozy. Truly heirloom quality pieces of clothing.
Filson Mackinaw wool is still top notch, and made in US. Other products have moved production depending on the piece, but it's still good quality. People stress about that aspect too much. The biggest trick is sizing. Read the reviews and check sizing measurements. Cheers!
I own lots of Filson products. I recommend sticking with the staples like the tin cloth and mackinaw wool. Regardless of price they’re about the best you’ll find regarding quality. But I’d steer clear of any of the man made synthetic textiles they offer. In that space you’re definitely buying the name. I wear out a tin cloth vest about every three years. I send it back to have it repaired and they end up sending me a new one free of cost. But I use these clothes as tools. Buy once, cry once. But, if you’re buying for fashion (something I really don’t understand) you’d probably do better with something else. It takes a lot of time to wear these garments in. Once worn in they’ll contour to your body and your movements. It’s really quite something. I can tell you haven’t done much in your jacket as there’s no permanent wear marks, folds, so it’s basically brand new. My guess is if you continue using it how you’re using it now you’ll likely be able to pass it down to your grandchildren.
Hi mate thanks for watching! I bought it directly from Filson. I am 82kg and just over 6ft. I bought a medium which is perfect in sleeves and good in body when pairing with a tshirt. It runs short and fitted so I could have gone a large and sometimes wish that I had got the large. As a reference I also own Mackinaw Cruisers and they run quite large so I have them in small and medium, a large in that would be way too big!! If you wanted a fitted jacket like mine then go true to size, but if you want a little more versatility then size up and you will be able to wear year round.
Not 100% sure mate because different styles run at different sizes in Filson. For the SLC I’d say a large for fitted but more likely XL, can’t be sure though.
What height and weight are you and what size did you end up buying? That is something I think is on every would be buyers mind when watching a video like this.
Great Question! I’m just under 6ft 1 or 187CM, I weigh 83kg or 182lb. I have it in Medium. I could probably go a large if I wanted it to layer but I wear it over a shirt or tshirt. If you have other Filson items, this runs smaller that most, very fitted! As a side note I have Mackinaw Cruisers in Small and they fit like they were made for me! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the review of the Short Lined Cruiser. I'm considering purchasing this jacket so your thoughts and overview have been very helpful. On a side note, that's a nice Hesalite Speedmaster Pro you have there. Which Hirsch strap do you have it on? Cheers!
Not hot or cold, just fine mate. If you want warmth - put a mid layer. If not the jacket will protect from some wind and weather. The nature of waxed cotton can sometimes be a little cold on the exterior until it absorbs your body heat.
That’s a tough question. If I was to decide between my BM cabin and SLC, probably have to be the Bradley Mountain. I like the fact that it’s made in smaller quantities and supporting small business. In terms of quality, I would be splitting hairs but again Bradley Mountain for me!
Hi Charly, yes for the most part. The waxed cotton acts as a barrier between the water and the fabric. I have been satisfied with the waterproof quality, however will need to be maintained to keep it up. Hope that helps.
Hi mate I am generally a 38 in most, which is fitted. I can bump up to a 40, but prefer 38. This jacket is medium and I could easily have got the large for versatility.
Super COLD and not warm at all. Be sure to buy a size larger as you need to layer under this jacket even in mild temps. The cheap tee-shirt cotton lining filson uses is subpar. Waxed cotton is cold and clammy on your skin - even with the cheap lining. They missed an opportunity to make a fantastic jacket, had they used a light wool lining fabric. The upside is you will look good in this cold and expensive pseudo jacket.

I cannot speak for the short tin, but of the three different types of filson jackets I own (tin cruiser, mack cruiser, and packer) they're all a little roomy for my standard size to accommodate for a thick wool sweater. I typically fit between a 2xl/3xl and bought all as 2xl. My sweaters, jac shirt, and flannels are closer to a regular 2xl.
Thanks for this. Surprisingly few vids on this jacket. That you got a medium is reassuring. I’m working on a deal to get one secondhand out of state. The seller returned the medium for a small. We are approximately same size just shy of 5’10” (ish) 165 -170 lbs. It seemed a little off to me as I am usually a medium or ML I like a fitted feel and never need to layer heavily.
