I’ve had a Woodenville Barrel Proof store pick, that was excellent. I would also add Chattanooga Distillery as a great non KY distillery. Did their tour and tasting. Really enjoy their products.
I love the toasted series from Penelope!! I'd also recommend Laws Whiskey House. I've had 3 different picks (4 grain, Rye, and Sauternes finished Rye) that were/are phenomenal!!!
I live in BC, Canada so of course there is duty on top of the purchase price but that is included in the sale price. Actual taxes are 15% here on the shelf price.
@fredminnick I think you may have mixed up Penelope and Pinhook. Isn’t Penelope sourced MGP out of New Jersey? I could be wrong, but I’m more interested in which brand was your actual pick 😬 Cheers, sir 🥃
I have to agree with you, Fred. We need to keep trying new bourbons and widening our horizons. I try to pick up something new every few times I go to the ABC store. Sadly, here in VA we don't always get the selections you would find in stores that are not state-owned. Speaking of VA. We have a number of whiskey distilleries here in VA. I would be interested to see you sample some product from the Old Dominion some time.
Some excellent suggestions. I was hoping to see Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon. I tend to favor Scotch and Irish and for me that's actually become my favorite Bourbon. I also work at a liquor store part time for the discount and that's the one I suggest to people because I've never tasted a Bourbon quite like theirs in the best possible way. That Dettling sounds interesting for similar reasons, that high variance in temperature adding barrel influence but I don't think it's made it to us in NY yet. Again, great video. Cheers!
I picked up the Woodinville port finished bottle for my first finished bottle and I really love it. I'm afraid I'll be underwhelmed by Angel's Envy after that.
Woodinville makes the best Port finished I've had. Angels Envy is really muted on the influence by comparison. John J Bowman is real good too for the Port.
@@FredMinnick St. Louis. Looks like some Total Wine stores have a different French Lick bourbon, and a non-store pick 80 proof Cedar Ridge. The Penelope 4 grain can be found at our local grocery store though.
I think something went wrong with my Woodenville experience. I had a limited edition double oaked that is perhaps the best I’ve ever tasted. I was really underwhelmed with their standard bourbon. I am perplexed at how the same distiller put me at both extremes of the good/bad spectrum. Maybe I just got a bad bottle of their standard bourbon.
I had a standard Woodinville bottle a couple years ago that will be the only I'll ever buy. I don't get the high praise surrounding it. To me it was very average at best.
I almost lost it when you were talking about the distiller from French lick as your pick if you had to choose if ‘something was to happen’ you look so much like Leonardo DiCaprio in Don’t look up. Cheers 🥃
I love Dettling bourbon. I picked some up when I was visiting my son in Andalusia AL. I also love the Wapsie corn bourbon at Wigle. It could use some more aging but the flavor profile was good.
In 1964 Bourbon was designated the official spirit of the USA ,I stopped at Cedar Ridge Distillery and bought their employees pick a cask strength and yes 👍
California's general sales tax of 6% also applies to the purchase of liquor. In California, liquor vendors are responsible for paying a state excise tax of $3.30 per gallon, plus Federal excise taxes, for all liquor sold.
all well and good. I just moved to a small town. Woodville, is one of my favorites. But we will never see it here. Could you do a session on interent delivery services, that might carry these products to us low lives living in the woods!?
Maryland tax is 9% for any alcohol. I'm a big fan of the Woodinville port cask finish. I recently got a bottle of store pick Penelope barrel strength toasted series that is phenomenal! Thanks for highlighting some lesser knowns.
In Ohio the sales tax varies lightly by county. In my county it's 6.75%; in the neighboring county where all the good bottles show up, it's 7.5%. And since we're a control state that only gives retailers a 5.5% or 6% margin on liquor, if you use a credit card most retailers charge a CC fee of 2.5-3.5% so they don't lose half their profit to the CC companies. Am I the only person that gets oregano from Woodinville?
Something I really liked but never had or heard about was 13th century out of Colorado, sourced mgp I believe, if you like high barrel proof bourbon give it a go, 90 bucks, saw bottles available in Nebraska randomly.
I still can't forgive you for twlling everyone how good Old Grandad 114 is ans now you're talking about Woodinville? Hahaha just kidding love ya Fred. You got one hell of a taste for whiskey and we really appreciate your contributions to the community and the industry as a whole. You got me started in this journey and i really appreciate you
I'm in a holding pattern. Not much new stuff that I can even get especially if it has lots of buzz from a larger distiller that will release it Nationwide. Luckily my local bourbon group does good barrel picks but we're starting to see price increases. Including picks from some of these mentioned distilleries. I love Woodinville and was able to get some Maddie Gladden off Seelbach's. Your Cedar Ridge pick is great and Wilderness Trail might be my favorite distillery in general right now.
Based on past videos I went and got some Middle West Spirits bourbon and some Jack Triple Mash. Both uniquely different but oh so good, so thank you for your reviews.
Update: Whiskey Wash asked the TTB, and this was the response: “I reached out to our Regulations Division and they confirmed that Bourbon Whisky can be produced in Puerto Rico and Guam. Please reference United States in 27 CFR 5.11. Regards, Paula A. Landsberger”
I understand that bourbon can be made anywhere, but me personally I won’t buy anything but Kentucky bourbon. I have to support my home state even here in northwest Florida. Cheers all.
Great video! I'm amazed when people get so focused on spending all of their time chasing a few allocated bottles. I love to hear about new things to try!
Well done! Really appreciate the spot light swinging over to these lesser known but high quality whiskey distilleries and blenders. Woodinville cask strength is EXceLLeNt!
Is that an old label for Penelope? Cedar Ridge has a port finish that looks really good. I agree that people should really take the trail less taken and explore a little. Drink some local stuff. The more you buy from them, the better they get. Finished whiskies are really taking off! Keep an eye out for them.
Yep! That is one of our (Penelope) original labels! We used that label for batches 1-4 of our Barrel Strength. We've seen moved to an etched glass bottle with a small red label at the bottom for Barrel Strength! 🙌🥃
You’re doing a great job at steering people away from the allocations with videos like this. Much appreciated. Keep it up man.
Thanks for the sticker!!
Thank you Fred.
I’ve had a Woodenville Barrel Proof store pick, that was excellent. I would also add Chattanooga Distillery as a great non KY distillery. Did their tour and tasting. Really enjoy their products.
In Arizona the "spirits" tax is $3.00 per gallon. It is .84 cents per gallon for wine and .16 cents per gallon for beer.
That is crazy that the spirits tax would be 1875% of the beer tax
Big fan of Spirits of French Lick Four Grain
I did all that and then came back to Wild Turkey 101.
Wait, I thought NJ-based Penelope came from Indiana (MGP) rather than Kentucky. Bourbon in Charlotte, NC has a 7% tax
It is, might be mixing them up with Pinhook. Which is a Castle and Key label that's been using MGP for a while.
Have you tried anything from Bluegrass Distillers of Kentucky?
Love seeing Woodinville at the top of your list, cheers Fred 🍻
I love the toasted series from Penelope!! I'd also recommend Laws Whiskey House. I've had 3 different picks (4 grain, Rye, and Sauternes finished Rye) that were/are phenomenal!!!
Visited Woodenville. Awesome stuff, new everyday drinker.
Shush Fred🤫!! Dettling is my secret hitter no one knows about! Local place here in Ga always has it, so long as we keep it on the downlow! 🤫🤫🤫
My question is the, can a spirit have the label of bourbon if produced in Hawaii or Alaska?
I love these. Love variety. Thank you for the suggestions!
I live in BC, Canada so of course there is duty on top of the purchase price but that is included in the sale price. Actual taxes are 15% here on the shelf price.
Love your tips, Fred. 👍🏼
Sales tax in Minnesota: 6.875%
Liquor & spirits tax: 2.5%
So yeah, it adds up.
I live right next to Alabama and Dettlings is not really on the shelf.
The Penelope has soooooo much going on. Thanks for turning me on to it.
Henry McKenna is $61.75 a bottle now at my local store.
Alas, seems just like yesterday when I could grab this bottle at Total Wine for $28
@fredminnick I think you may have mixed up Penelope and Pinhook. Isn’t Penelope sourced MGP out of New Jersey? I could be wrong, but I’m more interested in which brand was your actual pick 😬
Cheers, sir 🥃
Yep! We (Penelope) are NJ based and we do source from MGP! We used to bottle at Castle & Key.

Filibuster is another Distillery that comes to mind.
love wooodenville.. exchange tax free
Standard Cedar Ridge is one of the worst bourbons I've tried. As a native Iowan, I really wanted to like it but, nope.
Middle West Spirits Baby!

Luv woodenville & penelope 👍
Thanks Fred! Your intro was rt on about what we have experienced. I appreciate expanding our horizons!
I picked up the Woodinville port finished bottle for my first finished bottle and I really love it. I'm afraid I'll be underwhelmed by Angel's Envy after that.
You will be. Woodinville is KILLER Bourbon.
Woodinville makes the best Port finished I've had. Angels Envy is really muted on the influence by comparison. John J Bowman is real good too for the Port.
Looks like Penelope is the only accessible one around here.
Where do you live
@@FredMinnick St. Louis. Looks like some Total Wine stores have a different French Lick bourbon, and a non-store pick 80 proof Cedar Ridge. The Penelope 4 grain can be found at our local grocery store though.
Didn't know Penelope was contract distilling now. They started with MGP sourcing, right?
Indeed. The bottle of Penelope Toasted I have is MGP.
Pinhook sources from Castle & Key (Vertical Series is MGP tho). Maybe he got them mixed up.

6% sales tax, but in PA we have an 18% Johnstown Flood Tax.
Dettling can be found at Bill's package store in Clarksville TN. I passed on em because I knew nothing about the product. I've moved since.
Henry McKenna just sits on the shelf where I’m at. Everyone has realized…..it’s just pretty good bourbon
Indiana sales tax is 7% + $2.68/gallon, so approximately $0.54 liquor tax per 750ml bottle.
Sales tax for Bourbon (or any alcohol for that matter) is 21% here. Plus €590 per 100 liter excise duty (at 35%abv).
I almost lost it when you were talking about the distiller from French lick as your pick if you had to choose if ‘something was to happen’ you look so much like Leonardo DiCaprio in Don’t look up. Cheers 🥃

The william dalton will make you feel the hoosier countryside on your tongue. It will definitely not be in supply for much longer.
In 1964 Bourbon was designated the official spirit of the USA ,I stopped at Cedar Ridge Distillery and bought their employees pick a cask strength and yes 👍
I would add Frey ranch and starlight to this list!
good one!

You BT fanboys should stick to your BT bottles. Somebody wants a Dettling bottle, let me know. I’ll see what I can do.
Oh. And that Dalton is stupid good. Can u say Weller who?….

You mentioned 20-30 yrs old the notes where different. What are the doing different in present time?
Something I really liked but never had or heard about was 13th century out of Colorado, sourced mgp I believe, if you like high barrel proof bourbon give it a go, 90 bucks, saw bottles available in Nebraska randomly.
Thanks Fred! Of these recommendations I’ve only had Woodinville, and it was fantastic. Will have to try the others

Dettling is crazy good! Reminds me of those Whoopers malt chocolate candies
Wisconsin $3.25 per gallon plus .11 cents admin fee
Very interesting. Thanks for my new list of bourbons to try.
Great brands... thanks for putting this out. 🥃
Minnesota is roughly 10% for alcohol sales tax.
The woodinville barrel proofs are far better than the 90.
Will have to look for that Applejack, I love it in some apple cider in the winter
Woodenville is a rock solid pour. I wish Missouri Distributors would level up to other states and keep the revenues here.
I’ve nothing but good thing about Detling. I wish we had it in my state.
Spirit Tax is $2.50 a Gallon in Louisiana
The pick I have from cedar ridge is a cinnamon bomb.
Absolutely love Dettling here in AL!
20% liquor tax in Seattle 🤬
Great one, Fred. Thanks
Dang it not a one available in Utah
Can you make bourbon in Guam, Puerto Rico, or American Samoa 🤔?

Love trying different bourbons. Unfortunately, I do not recall ever seeing any of these on the shelf here in CT
I’m in central CT myself and I can find good stuff in NY. Fortunately my business takes me there once a month and get some good bottles.
Great list!
$0 tax in Taxachusetts
I understand that bourbon can be made anywhere, but me personally I won’t buy anything but Kentucky bourbon. I have to support my home state even here in northwest Florida. Cheers all.
sad
@@sarahplain8880 Agreed, so much goodness all over the country.

Like French Lick Indiana where Larry Bird is from?
Yup
Yeah, but more importantly where we make unique whiskies!
Well done!
Really appreciate the spot light swinging over to these lesser known but high quality whiskey distilleries and blenders.
Woodinville cask strength is EXceLLeNt!
Fred have you tried Blaum brothers from Galena I'll. Has been my go to for the last month
Yes. Great people and pushing the envelope for sure
