Secret Invasion adapts the classic Marvel comics crossover event for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It deals with a harsh reality post blip, as Nick Fury returns to action to fight the Skrulls (who we last saw in Captain Marvel and WandaVision). In this video we break down every MCU reference and hidden detail you missed.

Now this is the kind of mCU we’ve been missing. I love the cosmic stuff, and the multiversal stuff, but the MCU needs a ground level hero to show real human stakes. This is the first regular people storyline we’ve seen since hawkeye-everything else has been gods and the multiverse. So I am very excited to break this spy thriller down, let’s go.
We begin in Moscow, which is a perfect setting for episode 1. It immediately puts us in mind of cold war spy thrillers like James bond-that same genre that this show is emulating. The moscow font is also the same as black widow and captain america civil war: another couple of MCU spy movies. So that sets this series directly in that wing of the MCU.
So we open with former CIA agent Everett Ross, whoo we first met in Civil War, then saw again in black Panther and Wakanda forever. And in the opening scene he is revealed to be a skrull./ the big question is was he a skrull the whole time, or is he a recent plant? I’ve got theories that say he has beena skrull for years, in a video that’s releasing tomorrow, so subscribe to make sure you don;t miss it.
He goes to meet agent Prescod.
Doug: Yeah, why’s he look familiar?
That is Richard Dormer, who played Beric Dondarrion in Game of thrones.
Doug: flaming sword guy, cool. [high five]
Now , as for Ross, we cover this backstory thoroughly in our secret invasion recap video. But quick refresher, in wakanda forever he was arrested for leaking information to the wakandas, but was sent to prison by okoye.
Faux ross says, of Fury [he’s ono Saber]. So we saw saber in the marvels trailer-it’s the floating space headquarters of sword-that’s the government agency that kind of policies everything that happens in outer space. Monica Rambeau is an agent of sword, and we see in wandavision that she was called up to the agency by a skrull, working for fury [clip]. So Skrulls have had an open partnership with humanity-and now, something has changed. I’ve got some theories about that which I’ll talk about in just a bit.
Basically, swords replaced shields after they fell, and they mostly dealt with protecting earth from space. Prescod’s opening monologue hits pretty hard for people living in the real world [imagine a world where information can;t be trusted]. And this is one of the big problems in the world today, no one trusts the news, or what they read on the internet, spreading misinformation is far too easy, so we don;t know who to trust. It;s the perfect setting for a spy thriller, filled with nefarious agents who can change their form. The tagline of the secret invasion comics campaign was even, “who do you trust?” [batman 89 joker, who do you trust]
But this world of misinformation would be even worse in the MCU, where crazy stuff is happening every day-gods, aliens, robots, giant god alien robots sticking out of the ocean.
When we get a good look at Prescod’s newspaper clippings, we see the chain of terrorism that he talks about later. Now all of these events have happened since the blip. Which makes perfect sense. The blip removed half the people in the world, so missing people would be very easy to replace. And three replaced people are skrull agents who sow discord.
    Doug: Yeah, what’s their plan?
So the way Prescod spells it out, the skrulls stir up civil unrest in countries. Linkedin wakanda forever, when we learn that the US wants regime change in wakanda [president wants regime change]. We see this clipping of the leader of the columbian rebels gaining popularity with young people. This guy is a skrull, who starts a rebellion that will make him the leader of the nation. An extremist leading a nation of disaffected young rebels is also very similar to what Gravok is doing with the skrulls, so consider this clever foreshadowing.

Storytelling 101. Make Fury look even weaker and give him a reason to shave his beard, became a badass again and get some badboy Hollywood music when he wins. Every single trailer for Secret Invasion has said "Fury needs to do this alone!". Now he's got no Avengers and no right hand.

@cityoftrees9953 Talos didn't want him to kill that skrull because Talos wanted to prove to himself that he's not weak. It seems that Talos and Fury have a similar burden to overcome this season. Are they both too old, too weak, to be the heroes they need and want to be? Talos was trying to prove he's still got it and Fury took that away from him.

The reason it is truly hard for me to believe that Maria is really gone is because if she is this is probably the saddest ending any of our MCU regulars have endured... for a character thats been with us since the beginning to go out with no sacrifice for the greater good, no completed character arc, and with her and her best friend to close on somewhat shakey terms, while also even possibly believing he was the one to kill her... not to mention her only action in the episode was her getting beat up by Ni'ah... i refuse to believe the MCU would do that to one of its longest casted heroes.

The equinox doesn't refer to the shortest and longest days of the year, that's the solstice. But maybe instead of the song representing this being the winter of Fury's life, it's representing the Autumnal Equinox, which marks the end of summer and colder days ahead, to show that he isn't in his prime, but he' still got life. Additionally, Fury is changing, like the leaves during fall.

The Skrulls need to capture someone and use that machine to take their full memories. Otherwise they can only use recent memories and it would be much harder to maintain cover. So the real Ross is likely still alive and being held captive in their base New Skrullos with all the other prisoners. Also the Invasion only began after the Blip when Talos was removed from the council so Ross had to have been replaced sometime after Endgame

@@culchiefilms1791 Thing is, after Endgame, Ross still appeared in Wakanda Forever, and if he's doing Midnight Angels with Okoye, he should still be out there somewhere. I could be wrong but his imposter might've just used his face like Talos once did with that surfer during his arrival on Earth, which was why Beric Dondarrion and Talos easily figured out that he wasn't the real Ross. I’m an Art teacher. Although the SI intro art style was “painterly” I felt the art movement it was referencing was Art Deco (see Tamara de Lempicka fluid but angular high contrast style).
Abstract art styles became prominent after WWI not WWII. Cubism movement (Braque & Picasso), Dada , Surrealism all emerge before WWII. Early forms of Non-Objective art styles (Pollock, Kandinsky, Mondrian) start around the time during and after WWII.
The iron man painting is referencing Jean Michel Basquiat. I didn’t ID the subject matter as iron man but the crown motif (in the top left corner of the painting) clearly points to Basquiat.
