  • @andyham6094
    @andyham6094 7 лет назад +38

    This kit is heaven. Just compared this kit to the other new video you guys just put up of the DW collectors series kit and I def prefer this kit more. If I was gonna spend top dollar on a drum kit, I would definitly get a Tama star over a DW collectors. Preferably the bubinga or walnut. I actually prefer my starclassic BB hyperdrive kit over DW collectors series kit. I used to have a maple/mahogany collectors series kit but sold it after getting the starclassic BB hyperdrive cause it just sounded way better to my ears with better hardware with just a fraction of the price!! I got my 6 piece BB kit straight from the Tama factory in the exact finish I wanted, exact sizes I wanted for 1969.00 total. Now that is a damn bargain for what you get. The new hardware they brought down from the star series to the starclassic line like the quick lock tom mounts, quick lock floor tom legs with the air cushioned legs at the bottom, the new swivel wing bass drum mount which is by far the best bass drum mounting system ever created IMO, the sturdy new bass drum legs/Spurs, and the new claw lugs that don't hug the entire lip of the bass drum, and that beautiful beefy, loud, punch and attack signature BB sound for that price compared to the DW collectors which I paid just as much for that kit as I did for my damn car, and plus the hardware, mounting, tech, and most importantly the sound I was never ever happy with. And used to have the DW 9000 double pedals and 3 different parts broke on me and had to send it in to de for repair each time and took about 3 weeks to a month for each time to get my pedals back just to have something else happen which left me with no pedals for important shows I had coming up or just practice and had to borrow someone else's. Finally I got the Tama speed Cobras since they are a lot cheaper then the dws and was gonna use as backup until I first played them outta the box without adjusting any settings and knew right away i never wanna play the dw 9000s ever again. I never got totally comfortable and adjusted even with all the settings it has along with all the breakage problems. So I sold that pedal off for a super good price immediately. Now I use the new 2016 version speed cobra doubles and have had no problems ever with it but bought the Tama 2016 version iron Cobras as backup and to just have a normal length footboard to go back to in case I wanted. It took a lot of searching through all these different major companies like DW, Pearl, Yamaha, Sonor, Ludwig, Gretsch, but finally I realized that Tama is just the company and sound for me personally. Everyone is different and has their own preferences but dw's arent worth the price to my eyes and ears. They have some amazing looking finishes but every company does. I prefer the lugs, overall look and design, the tech, and most importantly the sound of Tama Starclassics or Stars anyday. I really respect Tama cause they are always innovating and coming up with something new to make drummers' lives easier and more enjoyable. DW does the same with trying to innovate but I just think Tama is s step ahead of everyone in everything from drum kits, pedals, cymbal stands, mic stands, accessories, and even marching and percussive drums, and just Tama drums and hardware in general. Also I prefer the superstar classics or superstar hyperdrives over DW performance series and design series. I'm not bs'ing when I say this, I would pick the superstars over any DW collectors series kit anyday. And that's a bold statement given the different in price between those two kits. DW collectors has all different shell types and different factors but I think DW collectors maple mahogany or cherry are the best sounding DW kits to me, and they aren't anymore near any of those Tama kits. Tama starclassic bubinga is just the cream of the crop to me, prefer Starclassics over the thinner shell star drums which are a lot more open and responsive which is why a lot of fusion, jazz guys love star drums. Starclassics are thicker shells and have that amazing punch and deep beef to them that I love, and why a lot of metal, rock, punk guys love Starclassics. But I see a lot of gospel guys and pop guys playing Starclassics and star so u can use either kit for anything. Tama star and starclassic bass drums are absolutely thunderous.

      Nice, but all of this depends only by the ears drummer, because in my preference, i choose the attack and sweetness of DW collectors instead of the dark tama sounds. i enjoy dw sounds much more. Greetings! (im not native english speaker*)

      @Almost027 7 лет назад +2

      Compare it to the brady kit they had quite a while ago. watch?v=B5onPUdg-SU That kills everything else, DW, Tama, Pearl, you name it.

    • @andyham6094
      @andyham6094 7 лет назад +4

      Almost027 you forgot to write IMO. Brady ain’t killin tama Starclassics or tama star drums to my ears. I like Brady and have played on 2 different kits. They feel pretty damn good but something about tama drums and how they sound and feel is what I love. I would pick tama over anything else any day. Ur preference is brady which is cool but mine is def tama over anything.

Too many players reviewing these kits made from "out of the ordinary" woods, seem to focus on a snare groove with merely a few tom hit. We're here to listen to the tonal quality/differences of the shells. Thanks for this!

    For the record these drums are very special indeed. To the poster who suggested getting a Mapex Saturn kit instead they are indeed fine drums, I owned a Saturn 4 for a while, but they're are not in the same league as Tama Star. If you can find some on demo go and try them out and see for yourself.

    • @andyham6094
      @andyham6094 6 лет назад +2

      Mark Yates agreed. I used to have a Saturn 5 and sold it for a DW collectors then didn’t like that and then got a tama starclassic and couldn’t be happier. Best drums I’ve ever played in my life. I prefer the thicker shelled focused more aggressive Starclassics to the thinner shelled more open warm star drums but there’s no denying the tama stars are possibly the best built quality top notch craftsmanship and just beautiful drums on earth. Can’t go wrong with tama specifically Starclassics or star drums

    I've got this set, and with the heads that came with it, i can't get that sound without muffling or very loose heads.
    Did you change the heads?
    The other video with walnuts has the same long decay like mine, not the short decay like this video.
    G2? Hydraulic? Muffling?
    I've been playing a very long time and these shells seem to have the longest decay I've experienced.

    • @ramenthenoodle_
      @ramenthenoodle_ 5 лет назад

      gaboogablah keep in mind that why you hear is from behind the kit. From a distance is a completely different sound. None of the drums are close mic’d so I’m sure the sound is from either room mics or overheads from a few feet away which won’t capture the decay in the same way that your ears do sitting behind the kit!

    I really want to like these drums, because I have always loved Tama hardware, but even with this demo by this excellent drummer I am not impressed. I also demoed an original Tama Star four-piece kit (forget the wood) in person at DCP with the intention of buying it, but the rack tom had some weird overtones that I couldn’t get rid of matter how I tuned it. If you are considering buying Tama Star, I would play them first even if you have to travel across the country to a drum shop that has them in stock. I ended up with Sonor SQ2 beech, which wasn’t even on my radar, because it blew every other drum set in the shop away. The sound of it still knocks me out every time I play it, and I’ve had these drums for almost six years now. It’s like the gift that keeps on giving! So try before you buy! Late

    • @ivanbajovic3476
      @ivanbajovic3476 Год назад

      On the gig those overtones simply gone under the sound of guitars and other instruments. SQ2 beech is great alone, but live with full band sounds dead if you don't mic them.

With the tariffs imposed in the past year on Bubinga and other exotic woods there’s no way Tama can keep using Bubinga any longer other than MAYBE the Star drums and special order Japan made drums.
