I take your point about the baskets and trolleys but haven't experienced any of the other problems in my local Lidl. It is a nice round trip of about a mile from my house and I walk it most mornings as a leg stretch before I head for the hills. My local Lidl doesn't have self service check-outs. It is well staffed by friendly and polite people aged between about 20 and 60. They always ask me if I want a receipt. I always pay by card and have never been asked to donate to charity. I never use their toilets so I cannot comment on their cleanliness. - Although sometimes on the walk home I wish that I had used them! I am 74 in 3 weeks.

Our supermarket in Saltcoats is ok too. The checkouts are manned and they never allow a queue to wait very long before they open another checkout. I admit the baskets can be a problem as they are very low and I recently had an eye operation so am not supposed to bend or lean forward for 3 weeks so I had to buy less, so I could carry it in my arms. I have never been asked if I want to donate to charity.

I'm a wee bit younger than you Eddy but I concur with everything you say! The social niceties and empathy for elderly customers is sadly lacking as the big companies merely see us as faceless consumers. As our WEF overlords have stated, "useless eaters'.

I agree 100% Ed 👏. In Aldi (that other one😂) recently, a young man tried to aggressively herd my 80 year old Mum into the self service queue instead of the manned till. He did not realise I was with her as I was a few steps behind. Needless to say, I went through him like a dose of salts. It is disgusting the way elderly people seemingly have to just put up with the modern technology. I am 54 and find the self service checkouts daunting myself.

Thank goodness its not just me that has a problem with this supermarket - I havent been in the Lidls at Victoria Road Glasgow for nearly 7 years even though its not far from where i live due to a similar issue - I made the mistake of complaining that there wasnt a manned checkout one night and one of the girls that worked there shouted at me in a loud voice "you dont swipe you dont get - you dont swipe you dont get - so i didnt get i just left the stuff and walked out and never went back - and i remember the problem with the filthy baskets - I used to spend time trying to find a clean one and just ended up taking the one that was the least dirty

I'm just 5 years behind you and I have to agree about the trolley/baskets. And yes, they are usually in need of serious cleaning. Never thought to pick up a trolley outside. The self service checkouts are often not quick and without choice if you want to use cash. (Heaven forbid). I use cash to annoy them. Haven't noticed the charity scam yet. I like to choose my own, and when I can afford it. I also like a receipt to check the prices of things and what I've spent. Apparently that's a nuisance to them also.
Poor treatment of the customers, particularly older ones. Not a nice experience shopping these days.

    • @EdExploresScotland
      @EdExploresScotland  4 месяца назад +3

I've never understood the, 'Do you want a receipt?' thing. It's crucial as proof of purchase and, as you say, to check the till price matches the shelf price, which it sometimes doesn't.

  • @OorDonald

Ed, II agree with you 100%,. Not shopped at my local Lidl for over a year. I always went there early in the morning so it's much quieter than later on the day and then the three tills started to be cordoned off. One staff member (Looked Ex Military) was in the self service pen which was to the far side of the store from me and standing close to a till, all I heard was use the self service at the top of his voice and pointing. Im like what!. He then repeated it and pointing and had to shout, Im not using it and had the cheek to shout across the store "everybody else are using it". I shouted I don't care too hoots and pushed my trolley away from myself and started to walk out. They quickly opened a till. Every morning after this they still asked you to use the self service. I had to ask a staff member to open the till up before heading to the till. Once there they are always so busy talking to the backroom staff. with the mic and headphones they have on and completely ignore you and they its everyday banter. Happened most times. Enough is enough so I have to travel further away from my house to shop which is not easy at times but Lidi ain't getting my cash. Sainsbury's are trying to force you to use the Self service. I am medically Retired with acoustic shock along with chronic tinnitus/ear pressure and affects ones balance so self service is not for me. and shops play loud music with no quiet periods (that's not 2 hours week) also so I can not shop there too, makes life so tough. All the best Ed ps Have always enjoyed your channel. Great research and presentation, 100% genuine

For a minute I thought you could only enter by scanning a QR code with a smartphone like Aldi did at one place. They built a new LIdl near me but it means two dangerous right turns on a busy, badly-surfaced road on my bicycle. It's not worth the money saved when I can walk to the small local Co-op. I'd rather support them, not put them out of business.

I agree with everything you say and my butler (who does all my shopping for me) agrees too! He prefers Waitrose or Marks and Spencers though. Only joking! I'm not sure what the answer is though I enjoy going to a 24-hour supermarket at midnight sometimes when it's quiet, full of staff, few customers, no music, hundreds of trolleys to choose from, lots of bargains (I'm from Yorkshire!) but no cafe. I've just been watching 'Still Game'.... I think you should ask to join the cast! Your story would make an excellent bonus episode. ISA could be the cleaner! Thanks for doing these videos. (I wonder if any Lidl managers see them? I used to know a Lidl manager and he got a free big car - a BMW or Merc, I think. I know that the Lidl shop-floor staff get one of the best/top wages per hour in the UK. I feel sorry for the rest.)

Firstly ,Ed , congratulations on the 10,000 subs 👏 it's richly deserved . Nowadays when you complain about lack of staff whether using phone services or physical , you get the same line , ' due to unexpected demand ' , day in day out for years , ignoring the same patterns . The social attitudes you mention , to me this really started in the Tory 80's when every person was commoditised and you are judged on your ability to generate revenue , and a certain prime minister telling us , " There's no such thing as society . Best regards Ed .

I avoid using self-checkouts at all times when it's possible. Sooner or later they will get the technology good enough that they will no longer need the staff. Then they will just have a skeleton staff to watch over the store and have all customer interactions done by "machines". It may be progress, but I don't think it's progress in the right direction.

Lidl and Aldi do seem to operate with the bare minimum of staff. Agree their trolley basket things are utter crap, the one you pull just keeps hitting the back of your feet. Morrisons have some new trolley's that are plastic and smaller, but again not shallow. It's almost impossible to find a shallow trolley you don't have to bend yourself double to get into. Asda have some but not enough. Lidl should realise that people are not going in there to do their big shop 99% of the time, so there's no need for huge trolleys whatsoever, the same with Iceland, you're only going in there for a few things obviously not £200 worth. My elderly parents in their 80s are just about done with it all, they feel that the world is not for them anymore, but they can't sit still for 5 minutes they have to be out doing something, usually shopping for other people. When I shop with them as I do monthly, I can see where all these issues are coming into play and there have been times I've lost the rag seeing the way they've been treated.

Nice one Ed, on the odd occasion when i go a walk i pop into McDonald's for my porridge and a coffee. I show off by using the touch screen to order and at the end of the order is where i try not to get kfuffled when they ask you if you want an extra this or a swap for that and then the charity button appears ( I donate to charities through either buying or handing in books or clothes but as of yet they still won't accept the wife )
Talking about Partick, i was in another big store there a few years ago with said wife, it was November the 6th and we'd opened the front door to what looked like Custers last stand with all the sticks from rockets embedded into our garden. So we're chatting away ( Im doing all the nodding in the right places ) and collect a trolley, walk through the door and over the tannoy came Roy Wood and Wizzard "I wish it could be Christmas Everyday" November the 6th! I turned to my wife and told her that i would wait for her outside. I enjoy Christmas but AT Christmas. Same with after Christmas and New Year, they're sticking Valentines cards out and, once thats over, out comes the Easter eggs and cards.
I don't use self check outs I always use the tills . Word ive heard on the street is that Morrisons are either taking them away or cutting back on them. They might be convenient for some people but their not for me.
Hope you had a good Birthday Ed 👍

Your absolutely right Ed the main problem is places like Lidls & every other supermarket is there's absolutely no pride gone into these places I can't wait to get in and out of these places as quickly as possible it's certainly a changed world we live in and sadly it's not getting any better but instead a lot lot worse,. Gone are the old days of the old co-op where all the people were in a line of independent checkouts one did the till the other did the baskets and another did the trolleys, now if you ask an assistant anything you'd be just as well asking the wall it's got more sense Lidl is a German company that sells sub standard rubbish and many of the other supermarkets are just as bad. But most of all they don't show customers any respect at all especially the elderly.

Well Ed I cannot say I agree with all you say but will agree the blue plastic baskets could do with a good wash down to remove the deposits caused by leaking yogurt and other dairy products etc and yes they are a right pain to load or rearrange your shopping in. ☹️ I use a trolley as for me its far easier. 👍
But as for the checkouts both self service and staffed,Ii have always found the staff to be more than helpful and up for a little chat if only to mention how are you or the weather. Yes you often have to queue but I do elsewhere too.
I am in Dundee so have a choice of lidl stores across the city but find them all pleasant to shop in.........and I am in my 60s too !! Perhaps a smile and asking them how they are as you start to get served....and not a frown... goes a long way to getting a similar response from the staff ? 😂

While it's impossible to disagree with anything you say, I don't mind Lidl. That's because I know what I want, where it is, and be in and out in a jiffy. I sometimes visit a large Sainsbury's and it's complete sensory overload. 20 types of yoghurt and 10 choices of baked beans kind of place. Best time to visit Lidl is 20 minutes before they close in the evening. Barely anyone in there and they want me served and gone even faster than I want to be out of there.

I can use them but after 40 years in retail I absolutely refuse to do so. My turn to reseive good customer service. I do make a fuss in any shop before I will 😂. Even though my husband is mortified ❤

Well done Ed a very good rant and , not just for Lidl, for supermarkets in general. The shop and the shopping experience is not now designed to bring the shopper a "pleasant" experience?
Rather it is designed to maximise profit (cutting staff), reduce time (and staff) at the till and minimize disruption to people who do not really care, all they want is your money, as quickly as possible and for you to be gone so they can get on with their day.
I saw an older person (in the Co-op) take the shopping to the till in one of these pull along "Baskets"? then asking the young man behind her to tip the contents on to the belt, which he did much to the amusement of myself and others and then she simply walked out the doors, maybe a protest, possibly dementia, or maybe just another p**sed of customer. Anyway happy 69th.

Never been in Lidl. Don't use aldi. Will NEVER use self checkouts. Im not old in 50 but have a bad back. I always use cash and go to the same checkout people i know won't rush you. If im unfortunate and get someone rushing me through i just make them wait and ask for the bill when im ready. I hate modern life! Even my bank has closed!

We’re all no longer human beings to these companies, we’re consumers & if we don’t like it tough.
I’ve had a Scottish Power farce going on for over a year in which it’s impossible to communicate with them. Ended up Citizen’s Advice where even they were pulling their hair out with them. (Got it sorted eventually)
    Btw is it your Birthday?
If so then have a great one & don’t go smashing Lidl’s windows!!! 😂🎉

I like your channel dude but I am going to disagree with you here. I quite often use Lidl (pronounced Leedl but maybe you knew that.)
I shop at the Govan one. There are no self service checkouts. The staff are polite and well turned out and all have to do various jobs around the store. Yes the baskets (which have a handle you can use to pick them up by the way) can be a bit manky but otherwise the store is always very tidy.
Maybe when the fabled Govan - Partick bridge finally opens next month you can saunter over and try our Lidl over here.

Partick Lidl is the worst .
    Dirty black trolleys
    Dirty toilets
The Staff are rude , unpleasant and miserable like they don't want to be there .
I have made a complaint about the staff .
I have been to a few Lidl stores and Partick is the worse.
As for Poundland the charity buttons are annoying , it's like checkpoint Charlie , 'Do you want a plastic bag , do want to buy the Terry's chocolate orange , do you want to donate to charity press the green button blah blah , do you want a receipt?
Your right about the complaint procedure they don't really care .

Talking about European pronunciation, as a young man in Glasgow I helped out in a french restaurant in exchange square the evenings and had to pretend to be french, when someone asked where I was from I answered "gou va", the french Manager went bolistic, he didn't understand that the Glasgow clientele wouldn't realize "gou va" was actually govan. I told him I couldnae say Maryhill and get away with it!

Respect. My parents Drilled into us Common Courtesy as the Base of all our interactions within our family AND in public. Courtesy and Common Sense is unfortunately not very Common these days. Nor is the Wisdom and Hard Earned Experience of "We Of A Certain Age" sought out or recognized.
