The thought of having both species live in harmony was pretty exciting. Hey, you nearly had lizard people living in Australia! They might not have liked the UK tho, it's probably a bit chilly for reptiles 😂 That said, I was so mad when they revealed Aleyas body and negotiations broke down. Not to mention, the mother doubled down with the drill to wipe all the reptile people out! Not a very nice lady! Overall, not exactly a win for Team Tardis. Peace couldn't be made between the two species, and poor Rory lost more than his ponytail this time! 😭

Remarkably- and also depressingly to be honest- that might be the most peaceful outcome of Human/Silurian relations on the show so far. I genuinely think this is the first time in the shows history that at least one side wasn’t wiped out entirely. Don’t worry Rory. We the viewers will always remember you. Because you were awesome. It definitely came close to wiping out yet another species 😔 I wish there was a better resolution for everyone, but you're probably right - this may be the best outcome. It was such a tough episode to watch.
At the start of the Eleventh Doctor era I almost mentioned how after a lot of recent tears you probably wouldn't be crying so much for a while given the more light-hearted tone of a lot of this era, but then I remembered that there would still be a few episodes like this which would hit you hard, especially once you mentioned how much you liked Rory pretty much from the start. It's quite the gut punch not just that he's shot but also wiped from time and Amy's memory (I guess as a Time Lord the Doctor is immune from that effect). After your last video I rewatched the original Silurian story and was reminded how many similar elements from that and other Third Doctor stories in particular, and given the writer I guess it shouldn't be surprising that even when he's writing a good Who story he can't claim that much originality. I did enjoy that it showcased that even with his appearance and quirky personality, this version of the Doctor is still a wise old man with the benefit of centuries of experience dealing with various races.
Yes, everyone has their favorite era of Doctor Who. Although I still believe that Jules is a "Tenth Doctor 🥹🫠" kind of girl, I remember it being 11 for me. When I started watching the show, I started chronologically from "Rose" but at that time, season 7A had just finished airing (so you have an idea who was the Doctor at that time, won't give anything away here). But as soon as I caught up with the 11th Doctor, I soon realized that those stories hit me harder emotionally than anything before that. In terms of Doctor Who at least. And this episode is also a good example for that. I mean, it could also be a factor that Steven Moffat became the new showrunner at that time, that guy definitely left some fingerprints 😂. And I know many people don't like him, but I for sure am a sucker for his writing. I'm technically a fanboy of his ever since I watched his "autobiography" Coupling. Would def recommend that show, although it's about 20 years old so some of the humor is certainly dated. I just love the character writing in it and some of the situations. Stereotypes, yes. But in a fun way.
They're still people! Just not humans, that's all. I love this two parter (I say this pretty much every time lol), but I was definitely frustrated by the mother's actions. It just goes to show, as did the original story in classic who that The Doctor referenced here, that humans will go to more extreme lengths when they are very afraid.
I think you're right, Jules. Ambrose is quite annoying and was clearly in the wrong for doing what she did, but we also know that Restac murdered Malokeh and was planning a coup even before she found out about Alaya's murder. As charismatic as the Doctor is, I'm not convinced he could have won her over even if Alaya had been alive. Alaya was just as militant/anti-human as Restac and I think they would have seen Alaya's return as a sign of human weakness. I do like this two-parter, but it's the double-whammy of an ending that stands out. Poor Rory.
The reason the failure of negotiations is so sad even though it's just a show.... is that you know it's true. We cant even get humans to share the earth with humans.

This is my favourite S5 story as I loved the setting (both the beauty of the city and the idea of living among another species) and complex character interactions and it highlighting that humans are not just the victims but equally capable of causing harm. So many amazing lines and an important thing to note when The Doctor uses the sonic to destroy the guns its not pointed at them its facing up as Moffat was very particular about not making it seem like a weapon itself.
Everyone has their favorite companions, and there are numerous, but I'm a bit of an oddball. Rory is by far my favorite of all the companions. All of the "normal" or "main" companions are exceptional in some way. Rory was just a man who loved his fiancé and wanted to spend his life with her. He's a bit scared, and usually looked down on, but he has heart, does what's right, and protects those he loves while overcoming his fears to do it. I'd argue he is one of the most loyal and brave people in existence. It seems a bit silly I know, but I named my cat after him. He even have the correct last name for it.
Remember Rory! Love seeing your reactions. Also I wanted to say, I watched this on my TV while I ate lunch. You’re playing in my TV right now in Colorado. Thank you for your content and I hope you enjoy being displayed on my wall while I go back to when I first experienced this story.
Great reaction Jules! Been a while since I’ve seen Doctor Who, but your sincerity and earnestness have been like seeing it through new eyes. It’s so nice to have a reactor who’s so earnest about this show. I was so moved by Rory’s death when I was a kid, it’s such a good moment for Amy, and so sad. She just realized how much she loved him just a few episodes ago, in Amy’s Choice
The character of Ambrose really annoys me, as does any character actively working against ongoing negotiations for selfish reasons. And, yes, wanting to rescue her family _is_ a selfish, if understandable, desire. Her actions are even more annoying since she _knew_ that part of the negotiations would be the return of her family. I get that she didn't trust the Doctor, an odd person she just met, but she had no reason to _distrust_ him either so she should have given him the chance to fail before she acted on her own, particularly given that the Doctor clearly knew more about the "enemy" than she did. (also, tasers are _not_ non-lethal weapons, they're just less lethal than guns)
Well done remembering the celery stick! Can’t remember if this has been covered, but the reason Amy (and Rory) were able to be in 2 places at once was because of how far away they were, time travellers CAN meet themselves but it’s a lot safer not to, so they waved from that far off hill to avoid interfering with their own past.
As I've already told, I'm not a big fan of Rory (to say lightly) so I was delighted at the finale of this episode. Although seeing Jules being so sad made me a little sad too. I absolutely love next two episodes, 5x10 and 5x11, for different reasons. So finally, after 4 weeks of not-so-great in my opinion episodes, I can't wait to watch Jules react to a brilliant "Doctor Who" again!
Rory's death is so impactful. They do such a good job on a character that is so new. What /really/ does it is the erasure of Rory. That hurts so much. Amy's grief and screaming and then Rory is gone and she doesn't remember him. Gah! Heart wrenching.
Hello Jules, 💜 Late edit - others have mentioned, I forgot whilst getting all up in the rest - very nice recall on the celery - a class move! 😜 Good seeing you again. I wish it was under happier circumstances. This is a tough one, not only the end of Rory, but the, seemingly endless “Who?” which are nothing more than “Wait! Are you saying Rory and Dawn, and Ben, and Glory are related? What!?!”, which proves amongst things which never go away, lame jokes are included… they just get tired and sit around collecting dust. This episode can be viewed a number of ways. As you say, it is interesting to see things from a different perspective. But the show does point out that xenophobia is universal, as are the presence of those willing to use this fear to promote their own ends. Alaya/Restac, members of the warrior clan, were two such individuals. Whilst Ambrose also harbored a dislike or maybe even hatred of the different, the not like her, she also suffered from fear, and, as such, was chosen by Alaya to further her own agenda. The Doctor has been around for 900+ years, and has visited thousands upon thousands more, so I assume he is a very good judge of character, or at least, able to pick out the traits of beings he meets. He immediately recognized Alaya for her propensity to provoke, and likewise knew that the way she would put her plan into action was through fear, a weakness, which she found in Ambrose. I think this is very much included in his warning to be The Doctor recognized this as well, I think, and that is more what he meant when he labeled her much less than the best of humanity. Not only for contentiousness and prejudice, but for giving into her fear, losing faith, and giving up. And Ambrose had indeed given up. Rory recognizes this trait, as well, telling her that he trusts the Doctor with his life, to not give up - there is still hope. The Doctor’s line - “When you talk about this, you tell people there was a chance, but you are So Much Less than the best of humanity… “ is my favorite from this episode. 🥲 The ending was devastatingly sad. Rory had come around. He respected the Doctor, and he showed more of his own selfless character as he willingly stepped in to save the Doctor. And Amy, at the end, well it’s just sad. This was a really good episode, much deeper than just an us and them. I always wonder how many times the Silurians will have to sleep for a thousand years before the groups can learn to get along? Have a wonderful Thursday, Jules.💜🤗💜 I hope it's peaceful around the home and hometown for you. The wind and rain finally gave up here, so maybe there is hope for you, way over there, as well. 😉 I look forward, as Always, to your next. More so because it’s your choice. Be well. 😊
This is why people should have cats, Amy would never have missed Rory either way, and the female murderer would not have been so invested in her family that she had to kill Lizzie. It gets better.
Totally understand how this makes you feel really bad - I know humanity and I know there’s no way they’d accept sharing Earth with another species as proposed here.
They wipe out other groups of humans all the time. We can see how indigenous people are treated. _Doctor Who_ doesn't make such a big change in society that makes it so publicly different from our world -- mostly.
As someone whos caught up on the most recent episodes of Doctor Who watching someone watchcan episode like this is more interesting than the episode itself because i get to see things from the perspectige of someone who knows nothing all over again
I'll tell you what, things got hairy there at the end, I really thought that the crack might spell disaster for our TARDIS team. But both the Doctor and Amy escaped unharmed - everybody lives! No casualties whatsoever. This episode does a pretty good job of pulling double duty, wrapping up this two-parter while also taking a pretty big leap forward with the season arc. That crack really shows up out of nowhere, doesn't it? And as if ghe shock of Rory being erased wasn't enough, but then the Doctor pulls a piece of TARDIS shrapnel out of the crack? Oh dear, what could that mean? I love the Silurians in general and I really hope that one day we'll actually get an episode that shows a future where they're able to finally live side-by-side with humanity. Oh and if you're intrigued by the idea of Silurians in the Outback, I just so happen to be writing such a story for a series of fan audios (ahem, shameless plug, ahem). The next episode is one of my absolute favourites Jules, I can not wait! It's my third-favourite story in all 61 years of Doctor Who, so that should tell you something.
I was going to quote the great Douglas Adams at you... something about "the things being people too" ( 5:27 ), but I couldn't find the exact quote and wasn't going to pull the book off the shelf and go searching through it. So here we are. Howdy.
It's from when the group first arrive in Milliways and Arthur marvels at the "people, the.. things" Ford tells him that "The 'things' are also people" "The people, the ... also people" Arthur corrects himself.
Arthur Darville has a successful career on the West End stage - I've seen him three times. Not sure why I'm mentioning that, since Arthur was never in Doctor Who. 😏
And to think, two species were *this* close to peace and prosperity on Earth. Isn't that always the way? If only we could find a way to get along, whether it's with each other or with those who had the planet before we did! And if it wasn't enough of a loss, we also lost... never mind, sorry, not sure what I was talking about there.
Great to see the conclusion from last weeks episode this is going to be great. my birthday is coming up on the 14th pray for me😁 you have a wonderful week my friend.🎃👻🇦🇺

Always look forward to your reactions though 🤗🤗🥰🥰 (that's hugs and kisses) ...
The demonstration of the worst of humanity and the best of humanity is clearly the messaging here. Rory, fortunately, served as the pinnacle of the best of them, even though it came at the expense of his own life. It's very bittersweet. Also remember, everything in Doctor Who is pretty crucial. Keep that piece of the TARDIS retained in your mind and that's all I'll say.
My little bit of paleantology and cladistics knowledge get irked by the naming conventions here. At least this time around they recognise that the reptile people would post-date the (fish-dominated) Silurian period by a considerable amount (although the name "Silurian" would fit with them being found beneath Wales (home of the Silures Celtic tribe). But they cant be "Homo reptilia" because they're not genus Homo. Should be something like "Draco sapiens". Small point, I know...
They actually reference that in the Classic Who serial 'The Sea Devils'. It was the second appearance of the species, and they'd clearly got a number of letters after 'The Silurians' was broadcast because the Doctor just openly stayed that their name made absolutely no sense whatsoever, and that the time they were around in was way after the Silurian Era (and the incorrect dates around the moon). But they're kinda stuck with the completely incorrect names because the story was so popular, so y'know.
Spoiler free: the thing that annoys me about this episode is that she had a taser. Even with a different physiology, a taser isn't going to kill anyone, human or homoreptilia, unless you use it for a really long time. Plot conveniences annoy me when they don't make sense. Though as you said, even if Alaya was returned it wouldn't have changed anything. The other thing that annoyed me was killing off the homoreptilia doctor but that was understandable because he undermined her so she went for revenge. The loss of Rory is always difficult. I adore the casual insults of endearment between Rory and Amy because a lot of couples talk to each other like that without any malice. Pour one out for Rory, he'll be missed.
Yeah, I feel realistically, the one upside we get if we discover another sapient species is there's very shortly peace among humankind as we finally discover the ultimate "them" to fight. Ender's Game gets it right. And the portrayal of the Silurians indicates they're probably the same way. There are outliers among humanity capable of widening their definition of what it means to be alive and worthy of the respect afforded to people. But most of us will go so far as to dehumanize even members of our own species based on creed, skin color, ethnicity, or country of origin. Ad infinitum. And once you've decided someone else doesn't count as one of your kind, you can justify any atrocity. Rory in this episode DOES represent the best of humanity. So do Nasreen and Amy. But you also make a good point about Ambrose. Fear is the short circuit to the worst of us. Just like Midnight. Ambrose had the most on the line. I love Rory extra hard in this episode. "I trust the Doctor with my life" to other people after all the problems they had. So kind and understanding with all the other scared people. Does his best to save Alaya, but doesn't give Ambrose nearly as much grief as everyone else. And when someone's pointing a gun at the Doctor, he takes the shot with NO hesitation. He is compassionate. He is brave. He is levelheaded. He is good. His death and erasure is the bitter tragic crown to this episode's big loss.
Pretty terrible writing in these two episodes I found. Sadly, the writer would be back. On the positive side I love it when Jules speculates - she so often gets things spot on that I never did on first viewing. Sometimes she's wrong but I love how she thinks things through.
Yeah, Amy’s choice is a really weird episode. I mean she has to choose between being an expecting single mother or having fun with the doctor. Not really much of a choice if you ask me, which explains why she picked what she did but still.
We share with animals we just happened to do what we did with our intelligence, our curiosity actions and more. Insects /animals have their life cycle and place others don't as much. They have their differences under the Earth. Anything is possible, some make a deal, others won't its tough. But the themes/questions make sense IRL or alien/other factiions in a show. Trying to make connections, negotiations so broad, almost a Star Trek episode but different. They kill their scientist yet who fixed and improved the weapons too busy playing soldier. Emotional responses and chances ruined. She is ignorant and ruining things. Bad bargaining, bad actions by those too dedicated to their values but not good enough bargaining. Poison or a gene combination. Peace and leadership, working around the consequences and those not able to escape sure and blow up their lives work. XD What a human alien connection and a new plan. Rory ah, how they deal with this hmm. The doctor not knowing hmm I wonder why. Very wrong she did. Amy by herself but going on. The TARDIS part hmm I wonder. XD What does it mean hmm.... Let the theories begin. :) They always bait us with emotional moments but what happens next we wait for what continues on. It's hard on rewatches and going ah this has happened but first watches it hits hard for sure. We all know whether they truly go or we go eh still was good regardless of the events of past episodes how they still land. Rory had his short time but I think compared to other every man types he stood out well enough. Tardis part hmm, it could be from any situation..... What does it relate to. The other details to work with. For S5 after S4 specials I think the stakes are well continued of scale for sure. They aren't the same, but they are well built scale I think. I remember many things but had some vagueness over time, some items I remember, other times names or conversations more then faces. I don't usually have moments that match tv shows, I also prefer it, not much happens and its better that way than something played out. The uniqueness of it all is fun. A lot of odd quirky sayings this episode.
Lots of populations are just 'protecting their family' but it doesn't make them any less an enemy. Endless empathy for the outsider inevitably harms your own family.

Awesome video as always dude! Cannot wait for the next one!
Remember Rory! Love seeing your reactions.
Also I wanted to say, I watched this on my TV while I ate lunch. You’re playing in my TV right now in Colorado. Thank you for your content and I hope you enjoy being displayed on my wall while I go back to when I first experienced this story.
Gorgeous Rory! We will never forget!!
Aww thank you for your very kind words. I'm so glad you've been enjoying!
So Ben is Glory, and Glory is Ben? Oops, Timey-wimey... In the meantime. Legions of fans are still asking who Rory is, kerk
Yes, it feels like a repeat of that all over again 🤣
Hello Jules, 💜
Late edit - others have mentioned, I forgot whilst getting all up in the rest - very nice recall on the celery - a class move! 😜
Good seeing you again.
I think this is very much included in his warning to be
The Doctor recognized this as well, I think, and that is more what he meant when he labeled her much less than the best of humanity.
The ending was devastatingly sad.
I look forward, as Always, to your next. More so because it’s your choice. Be well. 😊
This is why people should have cats, Amy would never have missed Rory either way, and the female murderer would not have been so invested in her family that she had to kill Lizzie. It gets better.
I definitely agree with people should have cats hehe
This has been sush a brilliant run of episodes. So great!!!
We have to remember Rory for her.
Yep. Rory's gone. History. Vapor. A ghost. We'll never see him again, that's for sure. Well, on to the next adventure!
As someone whos caught up on the most recent episodes of Doctor Who watching someone watchcan episode like this is more interesting than the episode itself because i get to see things from the perspectige of someone who knows nothing all over again
RIP Rory, gone too soon 😢
Jules!!! Great new video.
Out of all the Doctors youve seen, (5, 9, 10 & 11) how would you rank them?
When I saw this , I was happy , Rory was gone. He irritated me. I love Amy though.
I really like Rory haha!
I was going to quote the great Douglas Adams at you... something about "the things being people too" ( 5:27 ), but I couldn't find the exact quote and wasn't going to pull the book off the shelf and go searching through it. So here we are.
Howdy.
I still need to read Douglas Adams!
It's from when the group first arrive in Milliways and Arthur marvels at the "people, the.. things"
Ford tells him that "The 'things' are also people"
"The people, the ... also people" Arthur corrects himself.
@@julesreacts If you do, I'm sure you'll get the comment I've made to your videos 2 years in a row when I make it again next year. 😝
Great to see the conclusion from last weeks episode this is going
to be great. my birthday is coming up on the 14th pray for me😁
you have a wonderful week my friend.🎃👻🇦🇺
Whats a Rory?
Neither side were innocent. Both sides were aggressive
Hey Jules 🙋♂👋... Great et of episodes (these last two) ... very interesting. I've been pretty busy lately, but had to come see "my girl" 😉😊 and share some time with her. Just know that I'm lurking around and am here, but I may leave a few less comments ... I'm just inundated with a few things (friends funeral [Yuck!], consolation for his wife (my friend) and another friend with a similar issue, a couple of research and computer build projects). Always look forward to your reactions though 🤗🤗🥰🥰 (that's hugs and kisses) ...
Two for two today Juliette!
👍
Tardis aren't built, unfortunately. They grow. And there is only the Doctor's. Remember the episode Rise Of The Cybermen?
True, yes! I don't know how it grows, though. I wish I could see the process!
Usually the TARDIS is indestructible and cannot be destroyed but the mystery is here how can it happen?
Wait you keep talking about some “Rory” guy? Idk I don’t remember him..
Goodbye Rory 😢.
Don't worry. I'm sure the Doctor will be able to buy another T.A.R.D.I.S. at the used time machine lot! 😉🤦♂
Pretty terrible writing in these two episodes I found. Sadly, the writer would be back.
On the positive side I love it when Jules speculates - she so often gets things spot on that I never did on first viewing. Sometimes she's wrong but I love how she thinks things through.
Thank you!! I actually love being wrong sometimes 😅
Rory has died. Everyone take a shot
Rory ran back to get her and she said, "Other Way Idiot." Amy didn't deserve Rory
I think that's just Amy, though. Some people use words like that as terms of endearment, when they feel comfortable and close enough to someone.
👏👏🙌🙌✨✨
Doctor Who has far too many Deus ex Machina. Very irritating
Rory🥺
That mother is the definition of your average Karen....always hated her honestly.
Oh no, Rory died! Anyway...
Love the Top Gear reference! Thanks for the laugh 🤣
Your missing episode 8
No, last week.
I was a bit slow to add it to the playlist, so maybe just check the channel directly if one is missing 😊
Freaky episode.
Yeah, Amy’s choice is a really weird episode. I mean she has to choose between being an expecting single mother or having fun with the doctor. Not really much of a choice if you ask me, which explains why she picked what she did but still.
What are you talking about? The choice she made was Rory, that’s it. She didn’t choose anything else
@@captannemarvelwhat’s a Rory?
XD
What a human alien connection and a new plan.
Rory ah, how they deal with this hmm.
The doctor not knowing hmm I wonder why.
Very wrong she did.
Amy by herself but going on.
The TARDIS part hmm I wonder. XD What does it mean hmm.... Let the theories begin. :)
They always bait us with emotional moments but what happens next we wait for what continues on.
