Winter is Coming - W.P. Road Redbirds

  • Shot the night before the last day of the 20th Century celebrating the 40+ year run of painted SMEE IRT cars, truly the archetype NYC Subway Train. And just for old times sake, a little bit of graffiti.
Also note the incandescent lighting at Pelham Parkway. This station was on the verge of being overhauled, so the lighting remained on borrowed time. It was the last platform on the IRT to receive fluorescent lighting. After that only the Rockaways and perhaps a couple of other places, lasted a few dozen months longer. By 2010 virtually all mezzanines and odd street stairs were finally converted. In 2015 there are still a few bulbs lit up, but no public area that I am aware of is entirely lit by incandescent bulbs.
Outro by Alan Hawkshaw - Night Rider

The stations looked so good with the dim glow of Incandescent bulbs instead of those white flourscent lights they have now. And nowadays they are trying to make all of the stations have those hideous blinding LED lights. The system is slowly but surely loosing all its magic.

I could tell from the windows that these Redbirds were originally Bluebirds. The Bluebirds first went into service in 1964 on the IRT No. 7 Flushing Line for the 1964-65 World's Fair. They were finally retired in 2003 after 39 years of service.

Trainluvr outstanding! You were on "my" subway line! Very cool. The route is not as attractive as that of the #7's (which was your line). For me, the White Plains line was an integral part of my childhood. I enjoyed riding the #2 countless times with my family way back in the day. Nice catch on the sharp curve next to Simpson St. station (2:17). As a kid, I found winter especially enjoyable (and COLD!) since that was Christmas shopping time for us.

+trainluvr Thankyou. I know I comment in "over the top" fashion to your vids, but you're one of the very few people that I've seen on the web that has captured the New York City aspects that I remember well and miss. I was pleasantly surprised that you had this video as Queens is a bit of a stretch from the north Bronx, transit-wise. Neat that you enjoy jazz as well. In playing your video above, one jazz tune that, imho, fits so well with it is George Benson's 1977 jazz hit "Valdez In The Country" (currently on RUclips). Just play that tune while watching your vid and you'll see what I mean :-)

Those incandescent bulbs at the Pelham Pkwy. Station were really a leftover from the old days of the IRT. It's like something out of Roger Arcara's Transportapes. Maybe they should run the TOMC for the Holiday Train this year.

    Just Beautiful ❤️!!!
Perhaps one of the best contemporary New York City Transit videos I've seen.
You really captured the mood that I loved so much growing up on 219th Street!!!
I always loved the snowy wintery atmosphere on the IRT. (A Blizzard had just started, while traveling to CCNY from 219th St.station , Dec 22, 1971, in particular, I remember).
    Great Work Man!!!
Thanks again for Sharing, from my old #2 line, that nostolgic feeling!!!

I'm from Queens and when I was 12 or 13 I had my father take me up the West Farms el for the first time. We entered the subway before the snow started. When we came out of the portal snow was covering everything, and I had never seen the older style stations before. This was at night in the 70s. When I shot this video, Pelham Parkway was the last station on the line to have the old lights because it was due for a full rehabilitation. By that time almost everything, except the Rockways had newer lighting, ruining the mysterious atmosphere.

      @@trainluvr Thanks again Trainluvr,
Yes; Thanks for capturing that rare, incandescent, moody environment, in the Pelham Parkway Station... Especially while it was snowing!
(Remembering also back in the early 1960s, the IRT Lo- Vs, with their lighted, multicolored, incandescent market lamps.
This added a lot of cozyness, to almost a winter like Christmas
      Mood).
Thanks again for your great Photography, and capture!!!

I wonder who lives in that building on the NW corner of Southern Blvd. and Westchester Ave. They must have a great rail fan window to watch the trains pass by. What happened to all the Lo-V cars that used to run on this route? They were reliable in the winter with heat that worked although I am sure the conductors weren't fond of the outside door controls in rainy or snowy weather.

+Ryan Terry Ryan, really neat that you have the sounds of those carbon steel trains. The ones that always stood out to me ( when I was a kid) were that of the Westinghouse air compressors on each car pumping while the train was stopped at the stations and the that of the brakes releasing. I remember that there was always a slight "Huff-like" sound from each car about 2 seconds before the air was fully dumped to release the brakes. Another memorable sound was when a train would reach the end of the line, the motorman would engage the ICC Brake (I think that's what it was nicknamed) which created a very loud "CHAAAAAH!" sound. Seems goofy, but to a kid that often rode and liked buses and trains, it was pure enjoyment!

You're right as the R32 (and R38) are in the same family as the Red Birds. I don't know about the R42's as that was a newer generation. But the more sounds that can be obtained for these classic trains, the better! Thanks for your contributions so that these trains will be remembered and appreciated with accuracy.

why they stoppin these trains for?

    • @thegreatone861
      @thegreatone861 8 лет назад +7

The reason why they got rid of the Redbirds, because MTA keep rolling stock for 40 years tops, at that time, the year 2000, yet the Redbirds were 38 years old. And those was replaced by the R142. Also, they started to rust and the roof had holes in them. But those were the best trains. Good breaking system.

not a single worlds fair car that i saw, btw if you did not know, the redbirds ran with diffrent rolling stock, r33s, r36s, r26, r28s, r29s, all i saw was r26s, r28s, and, r29s, you can tell the diffrence by the windows, on the r33, r36 (worlds fair cars) there is only one long panel of glass, as with the r26s, r28, and r29s, the windows are split into 3. if you did not understand me, look at the images on google

No, there's an R33 at 1:07. Car 9125. The mainline R33s & R36s had windows identical to the R26-29s. It was only the Worlds Fair variants that ran on the 6 and 7 lines at the time that had different windows. The 2 line was full of R33s when this was filmed. The 5 had a bulk of the older R26-29s.
