  • Originally built by the Gondorians of the Second Age, Helm's Deep would come to play a pivotal role in the protection of the lands and people of Rohan. Named for King Helm Hammerhand, the defensive system would boast a deeping wall and the great fortress of the Hornburg, named for the king's own horn. In the later third age, heroes like Théoden, Aragorn, Éomer, Gimli, and Legolas would face off against the armies of Saruman, defending the Keep.

    Helm Hammerhand is probably my most favorite Character from LotR who wasn't in the 4 main books (besides a quick mention). He was truly a badass and deserved every bit of fear he instilled. Also Helm would also hunt the Dunlandings (and their allies) with a hammer occasionally.

    It is said that after the horn in the hornburg was sounded before the charge of king Theodin. It's sound echoed throughout the valley as if something or someone was still blowing on it. Many believed it was the wraith of Helm Hammerhand blowing his own ghostly horn.

    I did not remember that Eowyn took the women & children to Dunharrow instead of the Glittering Caves. I understand though why PJ had them all in the Caves in the movie.... made for more dramatic tension when the Uruks started breaking in. The Elves & Haldir showing up was kind of an unnecessary change, but it didn't bug me that much overall. I'm just glad they didn't go with the original idea of Arwen showing up too! Great stuff though, sir :)

    I find it funny that no Steward ever decided to become King, even when all were certain no appropriate heir remained, or would appear, yet they had the authority to make another man a king, and start the royal line of Rohan. Good thing none of the other, later Stewards felt this gift of their own territory had been a mistake, and demanded its return from the "phony king" of Rohan.

    • @Omnilatent
      @Omnilatent 2 года назад +2

      Well, they acted in the "kings behalf". They didn't have the numbers of people to fight in their northern realm and knew the Rohirrim had "the opposite" issue in the north: Too many people and too little land, so this was a win-win situation for all: Gondor got an ally, that saved them from attacks from the west, east and north and Rohan got a land to live and strive on.

    • @QuasarEE
      @QuasarEE 2 года назад +2

      I've heard it explained that it's due largely to the Numenorean custom and law still maintained in Gondor, which is a highly conservative (in the sense of unchanging over time, not some kind of political rubbish) society. The steward proclaiming himself king would be in violation of the law, and would not be accepted by the people, and according to Numenorean custom a king needed his peoples' consent to rule.

    I have already seen your video about Aragon before LOTR and your video on Isildur, but I am still a bit confused.
    I would prefer something with a family tree in the side of the video where characters are cross off a they die, so that it is clear what line remains possible candidates for the throne and what died out.
    Hope you find the idea good enough to create a video :)

    The scene is so iconic that it troubles me to see Helm’s Deep without « the battle of » before it 😅

    What's the song that plays everytime at the end of his videos, when he's listing the patreons?
    It's so soothing, but I don't know the name.

    I love that we're using Lord of the Rings Online maps here. I'm not surprised, though. That game does such an excellent job of representing the books and world, that it substantially adds to a "Middle Earth Nerd"'s ability to understand it all.

      That only happened in the films, and was extremely impractical / unlikely given the circumstances - they'd have been needed at that time in the north to defend Lothlorien from Sauron's northern attacks.
