- Founded as a refuge during the War of the Elves and Sauron, Rivendell would come to be one of the greatest cities in Middle-earth. Imladris would not only outlast two sieges over the years, but also become famous for its tranquility, resistance to evil, and the wisdom of Lord Elrond.

Merry Christmas, everyone! What other realms/cities would you like to see covered in their own history videos?
Please make a video about eregion
Arnor, Realms of 1st and 2nd ages, Nargothrond, Erebor, Mordor, Doriath, Angband....Valinor!!!!! Whatever!!
Can you do the history of the Gray Mountain
I would like to see tom bombadil once again
would love to see the history on the iron hills, or eregor or mordor or orthanc where sauromon was stationed
Before WWI Tolkien came to Switzerland. He saw a valley with hundreds of waterfalls - not far from where I grew up - and he called it Rivendell ♥️
It was mine and my grandfather's favourite walk.
Lauterbrunnen Valley
@@PerfectionHunter yes, exactly! It literally means "valley of many fountains." ♥️
Lord Byron passed it a hundred years earlier as well...
The James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969) was shot close by, and not far from it "Band of Brothers" as well (Although they pretended they were in Austria 😄).
That brings a tear to my eyes honestly
Wow great info . Rivendell is one of my favourite fictional places I would love to visit the realize counterpart in the future !
Why does the fading of a completely fictional place make me sad? Yes, good point at the end, we all need our Imladris.
Me too as Rivendell is a place we cherish in our minds.
Perhaps it will return. It's never gone as long as we hold true to it.
The fading isn’t what makes me sad. It’s the poor elves cursed to see it all fade over and over again. That’s the Gift of Man for ya.
@@jandunn169ou’d think with it being a major passing point between the West and East you’d think with the Elves leaving that Humans would dwell there in time. This isn’t a place like Minis Morgul that’s so drenched with evil none would dwell there, this is peaceful beautiful Rivendell, an Established well kept settlement. You’d think the people living near Bree would settle it. Easy home.
You should visit Yosemite in off season, it is as peaceful and marvelous place as anywhere on earth, with the sounds of falls filling the Valley. Heck, the Awanhee hotel even looks like the House of Elrond as described in the books.
“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”
I would add family and friends in that quote. Happy holidays everyone!
I think cheer covered that
Merry Christmas Nerd of The Rings and fans everywhere. Whether celebrating with family, mourning or celebrating alone, or not celebrating at all, I wish you all the joy in the world!
👍
@@jerrydeem8946 Merry Christmas then, it was a silent night for me too.
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you both also enjoy a happy New Year too, even darkness must pass.
What a bizarre thing to say
Did you know Tolkien was actually inspired for his descriptions of Rivendell when he was on vacation in the Swiss Alps? Especially when he went through the valley of Lauterbrunnen.
I was there this summer and it was amazing... you can really see the comparison!
Oh my word. What beautiful writing and what beautiful narration. Around min 8:30 you start to experience grief, and around 9:30 you start to cry. All for the loss of something completely fictional. What power words can have, and what beautiful emotions they can evoke. Thank you for this lovely channel.
I always get so sad when Aragorn mentions that by 120 FA, no one lives at Imladris 😔.
If only the Eldar could've stay, if only we could still have those memories of the Elder Days, the wisdom...
The world would be a better place, but alas the time of the Dominion of Men is here, for good or ill.
Merry Christmas to all fellow Mellonins. Have a wonderful day.
As always, excellent content 👍🏼🤝🏼.
If only the Valar had never brought the Elves to Valinor-as Ulmo & Mandos urged.
Why wouldn’t men live there ?
I think they should of made Rivendell into a hotel resort in the fourth age because it’s an amazing place.
The Elves left for Valinor, the Dwarves returned to the very earth that bore them, all the magical creatures fades into nothingness and we are left alone in an empty world without our friends...
@@Will.Flavell Yep, those Disney Dollars would be well spent....
I always wonder how big Rivendell actually is. It hosted many great armies and withstand multiple sieges. However on the drawn pictures it is shown as only a great hall with some additional buildings. I suppose there are many secrets about Rivendell that us humble men will never discover.
Merry Christmas to you all!
Thinking the same here. It has to be bigger than the Rivendell we’are seeing on different paints.
Since both Rivendell and Imladris are names of the valley itself, I suspect the valley could hold multiple locations with Elven infrastructure and buildings, and the House of Elrond is only one of them.
Elves are good archers, agile and discrete. It could just be that the forest works as their castle. They could have archers lying in wait on hundreds of trees and just let the enemy advance towards Rivendell just to be caught in a killzone.
What a lovely Christmas gift, Imladris! I would love to see a history of Gondolin.
I just spent the whole day watching the trilogy with my parents and was just in awe (for the 100th time I’ve watched) of Imladris, wishing I knew more about it. Ran into this after, Merry Christmas to me 😂
Oh my gosh Rivendell is my absolute favorite place in LotR
I remember when one of this channel's first videos, "The Religion of the Dwarves" was in my feed when this channel first started, after watching that video I instantly subscribed and I'll have to say that it is truly amazing how quickly this channel's subscribers have increased over that time thanks to the high quality of the videos and I'm sure a little bit of luck from that enigmatic RUclips algorithm.... Personally, I think one of the best features of the videos is the use of maps and showing where each person and event is and their movements in chronological order, this is EXTREMELY helpful in understanding the events, especially of the first age since the place names and geography/cartography are not as imprinted in the mind as those of the Third and Second age.
I have been to the actual location of Rivendell after my *Final High School Exams* HSC, *(Pre Covid)* it was Beautiful!!
I wonder what the sibling rivalry is like between kids born 100+ years apart ...
For the elves, 100 years isn't a long time. Their standard calendar unit was the "yén", which would be equal to 144 sun years. When Aragorn tells his companions about the history of the Rohirrim and that 500 years have passed since King Brego build the golden hall of Meduseld, Legolas remarks that 500 years are a rather short amount of time in the eyes of the elves. When he listens to the very old trees in the Fangorn forest, he says that "I feel young again for the first time since I have been travelling with you adolescents [Aragorn and Gimli]." (For reference: Aragorn is 88 years old at this point and Gimli is 140 years old.)
When a hobbit tells you Elrond's home is perfect, then it IS perfect.
Is Rivendell a "dimension/pocket" where the time and space are different from the other places of Middle Earth? Like Lórien where the time flow differently from other ambients?
"Anyone would think that time did not count there.
And perhaps that was the way of it (...) in that land, maybe, we were in a time that has elsewhere long gone by."
It seems that the memory of the Elder Days (the First Age) was preserved in Rivendell, while in Lórien, the Elder Days themselves still continued. At least this was what Frodo thought about it. However, Bilbo remarked to him that he always got confused with the time/calendar while being in Rivendell, so it might be that there was a similar, but weaker form of the "Lórien effect". (Which would make sense, because Galadriel was more powerful than Elrond). I think Tolkien once wrote somewhere that in terms of power, she was second only to Feanor among the children of Illúvatar.
I've wondered about this too. I think the land takes on a bit of the elves, timeless.
@@untruelie2640 Yes, the different time streams in Rivendell (memory of Elder Days) and Lórien (reality of Elder Days) are due to the presence of two of the Elven Rings and their Keepers: Vilya with Elrond in Rivendell, Nenya with Galadriel in Lórien. That the Elder Days are experienced differently in each Elven refuge is probably due to the attributes of each respective Keeper and possibly the differing properties of each Ring. The Elder Days may linger only as memory in Rivendell because Elrond, while mighty among the Half-Elven and heir to Gil-Galad, was born in Middle-earth, not Valinor, and had never himself seen the light of the Trees. The Elder Days may be more of a reality in Lórien because Galadriel was the most powerful of the Noldor remaining in Middle-earth, born in Valinor during the Years of the Trees and surpassed in power (if not wisdom) only by her uncle Fëanor.
@@JasonBGrant Thanks for the elaboration, I couldn't have put it in better words. :)
"And the house of Elrond was a refuge for the weary and the oppressed, and a treasury of good counsel and wise lore." -- Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age
Elrond would have been a comic shop owner if he lived in the modern age 🙂
I think that a bit of Rivendell has seeped into all of us. 15yrs ago, I was asked by the son of a much loved landowner to forge a memorial for his father, he said that the shape had "Just popped in to his head". when I looked at the drawings it looked strangely familiar and while I worked on it I realised that I had seen it as a reading table in Rivendell. It stands in the woods that the old man had planted with a slate plaque on the top and visitors do not seem to be able to pass without stopping.
Of all the places of Middle Earth, Rivendell is the place I would love the visit the most. There's just something about the descriptions and depictions of it that really speak to me. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!
Yours are few videos here on RUclips that can bring me to tears. Thank you for this! I think this has sparked a new approach/tradition for Christmas Day for me now: to envision my own personal Imladris and in doing so, bringing a bit more joy and light into the world.
Great point at the end for us all having our own Imladris to go to. Wonder what it would have been like to not only see it in person, but after the elves had departed. Great video as always and I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and great rest of yalls weekend
Rivendell might be a perfect place to celebrate Christmas when the power of Vilya still exists.
Thanks for sharing this great video and merry Christmas.
The fact that you are uploading this on Christmas makes it even more special! Thank you!. Merry Christmas!!
Merry Christmas, Nerd of the rings! Imladris is one of my favourite locations in Middle Earth, along with Rohan and The Shire. Thank you so much for this Christmas gift. 🌲🌲
Thank you for using the map in your videos, it really helps put everything in perspective
This one made me cry. Talk about fernweh! Thank you! Excellent content, as always. I hope you had a very nice Christmas.
Dude I have just discovered your channel and I have to say one thing: WOW. Amazing work brother, I REALLY love this channel as it explains a lot of interesting things of the best story ever written. Keep it up
Merry Christmas Matt! Thanks again for such great content like always! Another great video as always! One of the greatest cities to ever exist in Middle Earth💗
I've been really enjoying these videos recently. I started off as a lot probably do, a movie goer, who has slowly becoming a true Tolkien fan.
As I continue to read and learn, I'll always enjoy coming back to these videos, to further my understanding and enrich the lore of this fantastic saga!!!
Thank you for putting out a video on Christmas, I’ve had a bad year and a worse month. This video made a day brighter
Thank you, Nerd of the Rings. And a Merry and Pippin Christmas!!

Merry Christmas Nerd of the Rings and everyone! Thank you for the amazing content and explanation of this vast amazing universe Tolkien left for us.

Beautiful- simply beautiful. Thank you and Happy Holidays 🎄
How does a video about a town make me tear up. You are fantastic.
Dang, you posted on Christmas. Merry Christmas to all of you nerds out there! I would love to live in Imladris.
I'm not a nerd but just as guy that could not get through one of JRR Tolkien's other books, so I am so grateful for you being a SUPPER Nurd Of The Rings and deciphering all of Tolkien's books.
I can promise you, if you ever do get a chance, to Persevere with the books (it’s never too late, or too old to do so :)
…fantasy books, if that’s your cup of tea, will never ever be the same again if you do. Otherwise this channel is amazing lol
Congratulations on the 500,000 subscribers!
Thank you for this beautiful video and that last beautiful msg 😢 merry Christmas 🎄
absolutely beautiful video!
Ah, the beauty and sadness of Rivendell. Beautifully portrayed, and like many here have commented, it is the sort of place that is sorely missing from our world. We do have a few places that evoke Imladris, such as parts of Switzerland, Bhutan, and possibly a few areas of the Canadian Rockies. We can go to these places and imagine what it could have been like to have existed in a fantasy world such as Middle Earth. Great video, thank you and happy new year.
I love how the painting at 3:43 is obviously inspired by Lauterbrunnen, to the extent that it has its conspicuous clock tower in it! I'm sure it would be of great help to the Elves of Rivendell to know exactly what the time is...!!
Merry Christmas, Nerd! Excellent as usual. I wish you all the blessings of the Eldar and the Undying for the New Year. Namarie.
Excited for this one!
Very informative and beautiful narrative. Thank you.
December 25th the Fellowship set off on their journey! Such cool timing 🕯
Merry Christmas NotR, & to all the fans of the Legendarium. All of this Tolkein content brings me so much joy 🙂.
Merry Christmas everybody hope you have a wonderful time! It has nothing to do with the video but I got the original Lord of the rings book for Christmas and I'm so happy
This is a fun channel. It popped up in my recommendations and I have watched a bunch of videos and enjoyed them. I used to follow a guy who did good LOTR videos then he stopped because he said the Tolkien estate is super litigious and tried to take down all his videos. It was sad I felt bad for him. Anyways hope this channel has better luck.
Thank you and Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas Nerd of The Rings. Imladris is my favorite elven realm of 3rd age. Esp after saw the extended scene from the Hobbit where Bilbo going around Imladris
Merry Christmas and thanks for a year of great videos!
You really need to make an animated series about this I will watch it in a heartbeat ❤️ Great work and merry Christmas to you and your family
Great Presentation. Merry Christmas.
Awesome! Hope you had a Merry Christmas!
What a beaitiful video and message! Fantastic!
Perfect topic for Christmas time especially in these difficult times.
Great work as always, thank you.
Another great video, love Rivendell so much detail and beauty there, tbh it always did sound kind of like paradise; a place of songs, peace and quiet where one could write poetry, music, books and history. Honestly for a humble history and lit-geek like myself, Bilbo had it all in those great halls. Hope you also had a great holidays and a slice of Imladris (which at this time of year sounds like a rare delicacy lol), good sir.
I love seeing the many, varied, depictions of Rivendell in art.
Great vid! I hope you and this whole community has a lovely Christmas break ☺️
Waaaaah wonderfully explained!
Thank you for your passion and dedication! I really LOVE and Enjoy so much your content! 🙌🏻✨
Best wishes from a big fan from Bogotá, Colombia!
thankyou for this :) so incredible how in tune Tolkien was wow !!
The most beautiful Christmas Day upload 🥰 thank you for this
Let us celebrate not only Christmas, but the day that The Fellowship departs on their journey to Mordor.
Thanks for the excellent Christmas present, Matt. God bless you and your family during this Merry Christmas season. 🎄
Yo, Merry Christmas Matt!!! Keep up the legendary work mellon!!
At 6:46 you mention that Bilbo went here on his 111th birthday, but I think he went first to Dale, then settled in Rivendell once he had revisited the dwarves of Erebor. I was paying closer attention then usual on my last reading, and I corrected my own misreading of LOTR.
You are right. In the appendix of TLotR, it is said that he travelled around for about one year before he finally settled in Rivendell. (This included wandering around in Eriador for a bit before visiting Erebor, Dale and Esgaroth for one last time before returning to Rivendell).
As always, your videos are beautiful.
merry Xmas Matt cool vid really enjoyed it
Thank you for sharing.
Merry Christmas! Another awesome video. I admit to being a bit bias, Elrond is one of my favorite characters in LOTR. In most fantasy tales or video games, elves are my go-to pick. There's just something cool and mysterious about them. Keep up the great work.
Love this channel
Fun fact: when the tales of middle earth came to an end, Elrond went insane and fought Captain America while trying to bomb New York
Well, he became a rogue A.I inside a simulation later on, so there's that.
However, he was last seen fighting John Wick...
nah he became autobot villain
or Anarchist Vigilante
I thought he was a drag queen that crossed the Australian desert.
Great video.
Merry Christmas everyone.
I really love that drawing of Bilbo writing in his book in the Hall of Fire. Could you link to the artist?
Merry Christmas to you and your family my friend!Thank you for your nice videos!Elen sila lummen omentielvo!
Thx for the Video and merry xmas.
Merry Christmas, mellon!
Beautiful. Thank you.
this guy needs to make an audio book
Merry Christmas 🎅 fellow nerds! Many blessings from my family to yours!
love that last line
Not sure if you have a video on this, but if you don’t could you make one on the differences between the books and movies? Maybe highlight which differences you liked and which ones you didn’t? Love your channel and the way you tell Tolkien’s stories!!
Merry Christmas brother love to you
Rivendell the most beautiful place in Middle Earth
Happy Birthday J.R.R. Tolkien!
