  • What can old dogs teach us about human aging and cancer? Dr. David Waters wittily shows us how getting "out of the laboratory and into the living room" allowed him to make a ground-breaking discovery in very old dogs that could hold important implications for new and effective cancer treatments in people.
Dr. Waters is Professor of Oncology at Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine and is nationally recognized for his research on dogs as models of human aging and the comparative aspects of cancer in humans and dogs. Dr. Waters is also Associate Director of the Purdue Center on Aging and the Life Course.

Love this video. Thank you 🧡🌺 my baby girl, Kota (husky mix) passed Sunday..18 years old this past October.. I thought I was more mentally prepared but I wasn't. A part of me feels gone.. the bond, the love and joy..ill miss her everyday. I chose not to euthanize her..she passed barking up until the end, fighting it so hard because she didn't want to leave.. I just wish I had been holding her instead of getting in bed to rest for a few hours.. dogs are so much more than a dog.. a best friend..a child. The innocence, the genuine endless love they give is an amazing gift to experience..I am forever grateful she was a part of my life. Love you Kota girl 🌺🧡💖

We had a Bernese mountain dog, Ema. Bernese lifespan is up to 8 years at the most. Ema lived 16 years, a bit slow in her last few years. We made a ramp for her so that she can walk out of the house into a yard by herself because her hind legs didn't serve here very well when old. During nights she was always in the house as well as during extreme (hot or cold) weather, otherwise outside. She used that ramp until two weeks before she died in her sleep. A magnificent girl she was.

My best friend Leon was a pit bull and he lived till he was 18. At the age of 16 he choked on a bone and it caused him to have a massive heart attack. The vet didn't think he would last the night but he slowly recovered over a period of a fee weeks. But soon after that his legs started to go and he went downhill from there. I miss him so much - he passed away 5 years ago and I wish they didn't have such short life spans - it's so unfair :(

I think they need to study the owners as well. The owners may be doing things (or not doing things) that benefit the dogs and result in lowered cortisol levels. Hey, maybe the owners have lower cortisol levels too.

    • @sammyblackchow9541

Good point about the owners. I've been on a number of Chow lists for twenty five years. I've known some people and their dogs on the lists for 20 + years. I've noticed that some people have had similar behavior problems with completely unrelated Chows. It seemed to me that a problem with the dog could be owner related. I've lived a stress free life and my Chows reflected this. They did get wound up with a stranger at the door if I wasn't close by.

Please share what you've learned. I have a 14-year-old Amstaff and he is still rocking it. Hoping that he keeps going as he acts like a much younger dog since we introduced a young Shepsky rescue into the household. We have all been deeply grieving the passing of my son, his boy, over the past four years. We've turned a corner and Cheezy is noticeably older but still energetic. The vet says his heart is strong and he is stubborn. I saw a video of a 20-year-old pitbull and it was so inspiring to see and gave me hope for a longer lifespan.
