questo ragazzo fa più del rumore con le mani che quando sta cantonando ... gusto interpretativo molto raffinato degno dell'arte meravigliosa di Otto Schenk...
When I heard this for the first, I thought I heard wrong so I listened again. Owen should never have attempted this aria, period. He sings it awfully, probably the worst I have ever heard - voice technique. An opera voice should have both depth and width of vowel - example, the word "tea" is flat (operatically, that means wide only) and the word "war" is deep. From the beginning, Owen sings this with the requisite depth but then the playful part starts at 2:04 and he changes the placement of his voice to behind the teeth. If you pause play at that point you will even notice how clenches his teeth to get the sounds. You cannot clench your teeth and get the required depth of vowel for opera. He sings it is sul fiato style. Listen to Charlotte and Jonathan here to hear what someone who sings with flat vowels sounds like ruclips.net/video/_3FWcRHYyi8/видео.html (particularly what Rolando tells Jonathan at 3:16). The result of Owen placing this behind his teeth is that he can't get the top notes and there are plenty of them in this aria. The first thing a opera voice coach will teach you is "yawn". What is the importance of this? It to remove all obstruction in the throat. When someone sings with an open throat (yawn) the voice gets its overtones - so it sounds even higher, as if you are listening to an echo. This is because the voice goes to the back (as if it doesn't pass the throat to access head resonance). Listen to Rolando's advice. Listen to how flat Owen's top sounds at 1:52 compare this with Dmitri (he doesn't sing this aria spectacularly himself but I am comparing placement of the voice away from the mouth). ruclips.net/video/TKDXr_fimQ8/видео.html particularly when he does something I can quasi falsetto at 2:26 how conscious he is of retaining the same placement of voice (at the back). Dmitri misses the first top note because he's was too consumed with impressing (he's viewed as a sex symbol in the opera world and young girls mob him in his native Russia) but he sings the subsequent top notes and they have the sharpness/crisp (width and depth). When the the voice is placed in mouth, the top notes become blunt, lacking in overtones). Now listen to the master sing this aria and just marvel but remember to ask yourself why is Owen a polar opposite of this wonder singer ruclips.net/video/Fqw6UTlmceQ/видео.html At 1:10 Sherrill sings the top note that sounds so blunt when Owen sings it. Even Sherrill's not brilliant, I suppose because it falls at the beginning of his head passaggio. But just a few notes later at 1:12 listening to the overtones, crisp focused note. When you compare Owen's top notes to Sherrill's, it he were a photo, you'd be searching for photoshop to bring sharpness to his while Sherrill's would be like you are looking at his through a magnifying glass. I just hope this aria was not the reason Owen won this competition because I found him elsewhere singing Donizetti and he is fantastic with his placement ruclips.net/video/krMCPZBCsL0/видео.html That there is opera-singing, proper - as they say.
holy shit?! You realize this is a young kid. early 20s. where is your recording of the aria? let's hear your perfectly balanced chiaroscuro throughout the voice. I'll be waiting with bated breath.
This person won a singing competition? This is totally awful. The recording is bad enough. Here is no voice production at all!! He is off key, high notes is non exiisting. This is just not opera singing at all.
I Appreciate this so much. The pianist also great. Greetings from a Bass-Baritone from Indonesia here!.
