      Nail guns dont work that way (hollywood bs), they have multiple safeties, but its a air hammer design so if you bypassed them it still would just drop to the ground after a few feet. But ya you can buy full auto air guns. They kinda suck though. The gas density is limited in the expansion chamber and a portion of the energy is used in the blowback to cycle the next projectile/pellet/BB/round whatever.

      Lewis and Clark stayed safe with no injuns attacking them because they gave a demonstration to each tribe they met. It took one thousand pumps to fill it. After loading, with just a flick of the bolt it charged and loaded the next round. I don;t know why they don't make modern versions.
      Also, Napoleon had standing orders that if anyone was caught with an air rifle they were to be put to death immediately. Air rifle men would sneak into camps and pick off the officers .

      I learned this recently also.
      I always thought air rifles were a new concept, but they've been around since the 1500s. And I could see why they would be an attractive alternative to muskets considering how many shots you can get off in between refilling the tank, and how accurate and effective they were. For a while they were more accurate than the typical black powder rifle. You would have to manually refill the tanks with a pump similar to one you'd use for a bike which would take a bit of time, but some of them had tanks that you could remove and swap for a pre-filled tank and continue shooting.

      @@party4lifedude If you think about it, most guns work the same way, it's just that those burning gunpowder generate the high pressure on demand and per bullet, while air rifles get it from elsewhere and store it. In many ways that can be to their advantage. They even featured in the original Sherlock Holmes stories, where the sinister Moriarty assassins used air rifles because of their quiet operation. No match, of course, for the crafty Holmes who fitted his windows with metal blinds to ward off their pellets.

Don't get me wrong, I love airguns, but you will need that compressor, and power to run it(some will run on 12v). If you have a decent sized tank, you could go a good while before refilling though. They do have high pressure bicycle type pumps, so, you could fill the rifle itself with that..it is a good workout, in a pinch, it's doable. That rifle might take 3-400 strokes, and you have to put some weight into it.

      Just for clarification, If you want an external silencer in this gun, it must be registered with the ATF, since it can be used in a firearm too. Hence all those air rifles with shouldered barrels : all the barrel is enclosed by a tube with bafles, ant that tube cannot be used in other kind of gun.

But, here is the thing, they can be pushed to 300ft/lbs with a longer barrel (traps more energy) which will have a clean pass through from both ribs and both lungs for a humane kill. There are of course more powerful PCP air rifles out their, but most with energy beyond that right now are single shot (big bore guns), whereas this one is semi/auto with anywhere between 10 and 20 rounds per clip. Another good one to consider are the western air rifles rattler and/or sidewinder if you just so happen to want full auto ...

    Went off and found this gun on the website. 679 fps; with a 180 gr bullet that gets 184 ft-lbs, or 250 J. So... this air gun has the power of a .380 auto. Not bad actually.

    I've got the .45 version. Nice, accurate gun that's dirt cheap to shoot, especially if you catch the lead and recast it. I tend to use mine with a 295 grain hollow-base bullet. One thing with air guns is that, since the pressure is constant, they absorb the energy more efficiently as the bullet gets heavier.
    Oh, and there are magazine-fed variants. I've also got a 9mm one that takes 5 round stick magazines. Gets 30-40 shots on a charge depending on how high I set the pressure dial. Of course, I don't have a fill tank, so I have to use a hand pump... That's a bit of a workout...
    I haven't seen any full-auto ones larger than 25 caliber, but it wouldn't surprise me if they exist somewhere.

    use helium next time. You'll be able to get MUCH faster velocities out of the air rifle, it's a legitimate thing, don't feel like explaining it >.

    • @darkminer64
      @darkminer64 7 лет назад +14

      helium is much lighter than nitrogen and oxygen (AKA air) therefor it goes much faster (less resistance).
      there, I explained it for you.

    • @tangerian319
      @tangerian319 7 лет назад +11

      well, the physics behind it is much MUCH more complicated than that. It has NOTHING to do with density per say, it has to do with the physical size of the atoms, Helium is much MUCH smaller than molecules in air, and thus do not run into each other as frequently, and thus can impart more energy into the projectile much more effectively. There's a video on youtube, probably like a hundred of them that explains it much, much better than I care to do in a comment.
      Either way, whether I'm right or you are, it would still be one hell of an interesting experiment to run with this weapon, given that there are air rifles out there that use helium (or even Hydrogen) to have a muzzle velocity that reaches close to orbital velocities, which is crazy. not saying that the air rifle featured in this video would be able to do that, but... there are these rifles out there.

      to be fair, it's not too common where you hear about someone who's both a vet, and hunts. But, if you think about it, it does make a certain amount of sense. Many hunters are big into wildlife conservation and the like, You save the babies so that the biggest and strongest ones can then make more babies, some of which you might manage to hunt and make a stew with. But if you let the babies die, you might well not have any squirrels for the stew eventually.

    I used to think air rifles were a relatively new concept, but they've been around since the 1500s. Like someone pointed out here, even Lewis and Clark used one in their expeditions in the Americas. I can see how air guns were an attractive alternative to muskets, although you would need to spend quite some time filling the tanks manually with something resembling a bike pump, between filling tanks you can get quite a few shots off without reloading and they were more accurate.

      Do it, I'd be very interested in your design, only problem is the only part of gunsmithing you need for this stuff is barrels really. Everything else functions a lot differently than a firearm. I'd however be very impressed if you were to break the mold on PCP air guns. Good luck to ya!

      Shamandan pretty sure an old friend of mine had a semi automatic air rifle, he used it to hunt rabbits

      Your Mother Trust me the barrel is going to be the easiest think, im more worried about the air because i dont think it can give the gun enought power to make the bolt slide back and put another bullet in position to fire + the air is going to be runing out like crazy

    • @diamondflaw
      @diamondflaw 7 лет назад

      Had an idea for spring actuation to move bolt to open position and then air charge to fire round would move bolt back into closed position... all energy from compressed air would be discharged down the barrel that way and the bolt would immediately retract as soon as the pressure was expelled. The trick then becomes making a catch so that the bolt return can't happen until the pressure is fully relieved... Why am I doing your design work for you - I should build this thing.

    Matt said" don't mess this up like I do everything in my life" which is very funny cause he has done everything right! Best wife ever , 3 beautiful children and a fantastic career , I wish this channel was around 30 years ago because he us such an inspection to me and probably would've helped me make better decisions in my life , I'm 43 now so I feel it's too late for me to follow my dreams 😣

    for anyone wondering, price ist 699$ ... 😳 edit: i guess its kinda fair.. when shooting its still cheaper than some real guns that you probably could compare energy wise... 🤷🏽‍♂️

      Not much more than a decent 9mm handgun, and I'm pretty sure you could put whatever in the barrel as long as it fits right. Tons of specialized ammo as well.
