Great article on the History of Natural Hair! Understanding African history through Infographics at Afrographics! Website afrographics.com/category/african-culture/
Thanks for the link and the video. On point, I'm not sure that the ancient Nubians and Egyptians all wore wigs. I saw videos on the Afar people. Many of them look very much like the ancient Egyptians and Nubians. They have the same styles as the ancients. They actually wear their hair and style it with butter and animal fat. I actually tried it myself.
why don't we learn about culture like this is social studies class? all we learn about ourselves is that we were slaves. sure it's apart our history but not the only thing we have on our timeline
Naps Of Nature I'm in 10th grade and the history we've learned was how white people came for imperialism and killed people for their land. Lmao the lesson made whites look evil as hell 😂💯
Melanin Gawdess But that's not all there is to it. They never teach all of it or the empires of black people. You'd be surprised how much we don't know. They don't teach about he Haitian revolution for example which was a situation where black people beat white people
@ask_yo_girl_about_me lemme be yo waifu Oh but the difference between you and I is the Carribean. I am so Black I make Nina Simone look Caucasian. Speak what you know. I'll speak what I know. My Black hair is down to my ass. My curls do what I make them do. Avocado, coconut oil and lots of conditioner.
and the ones you see most of the time they shave their hair during transition or big occurrences in their lives then grow it. You have to understand the culture. But we still slay bald, TWA, BAA, hair wraps what can I say it's in our genes lol... and most of those are South Africans the African ancestors of most black Americans are West African. Culture is very important in Africa dressing from hair to toe, language, music, food really important for occasions et al
That's because they show you young girls. It's seen as vain to have long hair in many African schools so the girls keep their hair in low cuts. However, times are changing and now they just wear one style. Uniformity.
I'm noticing a lot of African American women are wearing their natural hair. This is a happy time for me as a black man. Talk about visually stimulating, wow!! The more black women wear their natural hair, the more they'll explore better ways of cultivating, new styles and better hair care. Great video.
+inquizative44 The Asian and South American hair manufacturers/processors are making profits still on hair wigs/extensions/locks that look and feel like our hair natural and synthetic, they have revamped the market. If all of Us just relied on styling Our Own hair like We did in times past without hair pieces from them they will go broke. Weaves, wigs. extensions of any length/texture are not bad, they are great for people who have hair loss, an acting role, or to do elaborate styles, etc.
As a white woman I just love seeing real Afro hair. I think it's just great and I feel sad that black women feel the need to not show it. I was born in seventies England so I can remember seeing Afro hair before people felt as though they couldn't/didn't want to show it. Grow it back ladies, it's fantastic!
+HomeTeam History hey I was wondering what about dread locks . and men. why do African men slave bald versus Africans in the Americas don't like to be bald. both places are hot and sunny
oh wow! Am very late, but how refreshing it is to see a black man speak highly of their own women instead of degrading us. Thank you and keep up the good work and despite what a lot of people say about black women their are a lot of good black women out here with their natural hair. god bless
KLG83 nat all men disliked black women because i in particular cherish our ladies ,buh only those that believe and appreciates them selves by knowing that the are Africans with many cultures and traditions .
@@SelfimproventandDevelopment Where is the lie, though? Many of us in the diaspora unknowingly reinforce these negative messages to each other regarding our natural feautures. Many of our people are uninformed and don't know this history either. The psychological effects of racism have been passed down for generations.
Remember, guys, this is just snippets of information he is providing us, if you want really detailed information, please, check out the links he provides and do your own research. he can only do so much in a video. Eventually, it is your job to educate yourself. thank you HomeTeam!
Lilia lyod I stand by my response. There is only one race, being the human race. And, everything I said about the melanin deficient population is true. I meant it. And I'm not your "henny". But, thanks for your response.
Not only that African women are the most beautiful among every race. We are naturally beautiful and smart with lot's full of ideas. People are mimicking black people's hair extensions, perfect backside, perfect lips, high chick bones, broad shoulder and also take our inventions and make their own. We are strong survivals too.
currently sitting here taking down braids--- lol. and i did notice that even the wigs and protective styles were all still Afro based-- not straight and european looking.

Just turned 40 & finally did the chop! I had no clue what lied beneath that permed, processed, damage hair.... Wanted to cry at 1st for doing it! Never had my hair this short. Yet, I'm learning to embrace my natural kinky hair now. I want my daughter to be proud of her hair. .So I'm leading by example...
I see you lady 💗 That's an incredible gift you're giving your daughter and yourself. The gift of self-acceptance and self-love. My heart goes to you both.
Gosh! I think it’s crazy you never see photos like these! All theses women are drop dead gorgeous and stunning. It’s nice to see old traditional hairstyles of a culture. In America their aren’t many strong role models of different ethnicities. Even then models and what not straighten their hair, lighten their skin and. Work hard to adhere to In a sense they are trying to copy and mimic Something that’s literally impossible to replicate physically. A good example of this is if you have a pear-shaped body and the standard of beauty was a inverted triangle shaped body. So instead of wearing clothes that was flattering to you you were close that were designed for people with big chests in little hips even though you had big hips in the small chest. I couldn’t even imagine living in a world where you had to mimic textured hair and to need dark back skin. My hair is just not design that way. it’s way too thinns and brittle I doubt it could take all the chemicals they would need to make a curly, dark and thick. I would have to dye my skin. My nose is way too long and I would need surgery. I am way too thin and don’t have beautiful curves. And after I’ve probably got all that done to try to be beautiful I would still like awkward because I would not be flattering my natural looks. Dark is beautiful!!! Textured hair is beautiful!!! Living yourself for who you are is beautiful!!!!.
Ama Ayomide Technically African-Jamaican-American lool, But Labels are only helpful suggestions after all, he’s a proud member of Africa disporia, that’s all that matters:)!
Absolutely right Darkstalker. Even when we were being programmed to think otherwise and couldn't see it ourselves while living in poor conditions...our hair was still in itself..beautiful.
***** exactly! you see i ignored that fool i love our hair & aint shit nobody can say that will make me feel otherwise... usually when people are trying so hard to convince you that something is wrong with you its a reflection on how THEY FEEL about themselves lol sad though
I'm a white Italian man just trying to understand more about Africa since our educational system usually doesn't teach us anything about Africa after the fall of the Roman Empire. So thank you for your hard work!
I love this video. This is proof to bash haters who always say black people can only be mixed in order to have "good hair" or a certain hair texture, nonsense!!! We are so diverse as black people and we come in different shades and hair textures
+inquizative44 "I know, and now realizing why everyone try to demonize them so, (among other reasons) these are people that, other black people and black European mixture probably never knew were there in the world, thanks to media and racism?" From watching this video and seeing the different tribes, hair, and styles just goes to show want black people has been saying all along, is that Africans are brothers and sisters in most cases but they are not all the same as we see through all their different styles ect...
Melissa Murray seriously when i was young in kenya village my mam and relative ladies had long strong hair..when look at some comment here i think poeple should go deep in africa..then see virgin hair wonder.
I loved this! I am in the process of deciding on a dissertation topic and African/African-American Hair is at the top of my list. We are so quick to say that "we have indian in our family" because of the "non-kinky" type hair that some of us have. We tend to think that Africans only have "nappy/kinky/coily/ hair and never tend to think that - our "non-kinky" type hair may have come from our African ancestors instead of the imaginary Native American ancestors. There is so much that we have to learn about ourselves. Thank you!
I admit I was once guilty of that. But have since been illuminated and edified after watching similar videos. It's what we've been taught in the Caribbean for example, given our diverse backgrounds and mix of races/ethnicities. That was, we need to educate our women and men. I have actually gone on a natural hair journey and it's now been a year. I feel so powerful even though I was first daunted, having had relaxed hair from a child.
Also the longer hair he's, the heavier it may get, and thus hair texture changes. Some one who is 4c can go to raise just from immense growth b/c 30 inch hair isn't going to look like 8 inch hair all around your head(for blk ppl) which is why some ppl make think that long-haired blk women are "Indian"
I am a black woman born and raised in France. My parents were birn on small islands in the indian ocean and I do appreciate the messages carried by this channel ...
Beautiful to want to get connected with ur African roots. Let no one make you forget where u come from. AFRICA will always love you. All 54 states of it.
And to think I've been calling it a "pompadour" all this time. When Janelle Monae came out and rocked that particular Fulani style and it started re-trending here in the US, we should have been calling it a "wudabu" (sp. check) but instead, as usual, we like to put French names on everything. Smh.. if you look up the woman after whom the pompadour is named, it is markedly different
Finally seen your face my fellow Pan-Africanist. 😊 I'm a big fam from Egypt. Much love and keep up the great work by telling true Africa history. Gone are the days we believed the lies they told us. It's a moment of ”Awakening”, now it's time to unlearn the wrongs and learn ”Truth”. May God richly bless you and every African on the continent and diaspora.
@Chelsea Love Yes, I AM BLACK. The original Egyptians are BLACKS. You probably don't know the history of how the so-called white people got to Egypt. Most of the whites are of Turkish, Greek, British, Italian origin.
about 50% arabs are muslim. the other roughly 50% are christian. islam is the only true religion. God says in the quran that the only thing that makes anyone superior is how pious he/she is in relationship to God. it has nothing to do with race or nationality in islam. read the quran, it's the truth, and God only judges by your faith and worship/piousness towards Him. so, at least per the muslim people whether white, black, arab, asian or whatever there is no such thing as racism.
@@arnoldsgrorm Are you that stupid? This was a comment meant to praise people for not feeling that they are better than people here n you stupidly are claiming Islam is the only true religion and superior and anyone believing in anything else is inferior? You hv just defeated the spirit of the comment. You fool. Stupid
Thank you this was great. I am so thankful that we are waking up and embracing our beautiful hair! I am a proud 51 year old African American woman, and I wish so much that we had this positive hair movement back when I was a teenager. My friends and I would have enjoyed the wonderful, simple things in life so much more, like playing in the rain, going for walks in the rain with our boyfriends, swimming and not worrying about how our hair was gonna look, actually getting our hair washed more often! I'm so glad this generation won't have to carry those burdens. I no longer carry them either. I love my natural hair! It is a gift from God!
In Africa, hair represented beauty, culture and class. This practice is common among many peoples around the world. In the West(Americas) however, Africans make use of perms because of dislike/hatred for their own hair. Africans on the continent have also adopted this behaviour. They are ashamed of their hair. The natural hair movement exist because women are aware of this issue. Natural hair is beautiful!
I'm a Yoruba man, I think it's about time we stop criticising women and what they choose to do with their hair. Women own their bodies and they have every right to do with their hair as they choose. It's very misogynistic when men are the ones always seemingly prescribing best practices for womanhood. The constant pressures of conformity to status quo is the same exact reason why there is a shift to self determination in all aspects of life (and rightly so) as we're observing today. As Yoruba men, we are inherently tolerant, it's not within our culture to be so against plurality of ways of life, this is what made us great as a people. It's beneath us, to be judgemental. I remember my great grand mother saying to me once, when I asked why Yorubas venerated women, more so than most other cultures, she said "Men may be the heads, but women are the neck, if the neck doesn't allow it, the head will go nowhere.." Synergy/Equilibrium/Balance is the Yoruba way.
@KarlinRex As a Black Woman, I'm glad you said this - the criticism is silly. Advocating for healthy hair practices is not the same as throwing women under the bus for their hairstyles. It would be nice if people would recognize the difference. Hair is not something Black people should be in divided camps over.
Chic Chi Be very careful of the conspiracy theories you expose yourself to. I'm not sure what natural hair has to do with any of what you just wrote, it's not that deep.
KarlinRex is right. If someone wears a relaxer/perm that's a rightful choice! I've worn natural and relaxed its MY BODY. I'm tired of looking at pulled back afro puffs but it's a woman's right to choose what she wants to do with her hair. Would the USA be a better place if most blondes were not box blondes? So stop acting like relaxers and weaves are the oppressors.
Love the lessons. I am Afro-Caribbean-Canadian decent and I wore braided hair to my university class and a professor told me "not in my class" . It became a human Right issue and the professor had to apologized for not to get fired.
History repeats itself with all these beautiful hairstyles from Africa, yet some People from other races try to dominate or claim these hairstyles. They need to know the History before opening their foolish mouths.😊💁🏽❤️📖
You are amazing my brother. glad v to have found this. my dad is from the Bahamas and since I was a little girl he has been trying to get me to focus on African history and the natural hair care for women. I used to just throw him off but over the past 5 years I'm really embracing history and I love it.
Very well done video! I really appreciate this, I just did my AncestryDNA and have confirmed my West Afrikan roots, so seeing homage paid to these women is right on time for me. As a Black woman born in America, embracing our hair is truly a personal journey. I am now -after a 10 year natural hair journey- can say I really love my hair!
I enjoyed your video and I especially took note of the distinction you drew between the wigs, extensions and weaves of ancient Africans mimicking their natural hair textures and modern trends which mimic European and Asian textures. I have been re-naturalized for about 5 years now and I love it! However, I am dismayed at the few options there are for protective wigs and weaves that embrace African hair textures.
+Soraya. Oh really? I googled the people and saw that they are called Bamum?! That's interesting because I know Yoruba women have other diverse hairstyle. Thanks for letting me know.
I'm grateful that you posted this information. Im exhausted trying to convince some African American women of the fact that our hair is diverse. Yes some have straight and wavy hair. We're as diverse with our hair types as we are with our skin tones. #MelaninFierceness
You are right to the core. I grew up in Nigeria. My dad used to take me to the village to spend time with both sides of my grand parents. I saw all these styles. Then I moved to the north of Nigeria where the Fulanis, "Buzus"( middle eastern African) were so popular. Hausas also and more. I lived in those hair styles then. Thank you so much. You did a great job. Will show my grand daughter
great video I cut my permed hair couple days ago, I hate that at first I was nervous going outside without my shoulder length hair but it actually felt liberating and maybe some body seen me outside walking and they got interest to love their natural hair like I am.
Thank you for another great video. I'm just a old white woman that loves any history about all people. I know in this day and age it is a billion dollar industry for black ladies hair here in the U.S.A. On a different note, there is an actress by the name of Grace, I can't remember her last name, but she kept her hair short and I have always thought she was such a beautiful black woman. Again, thank you for the nice video and you do have a nice calm voice to go with it. Take care.
Hello handsome!! Im addicted to your voice right now! Please teach these self hating black men to see the beauty in us instead of running to the Kardashians
Wow, thank you soooo much. I've always joked that no one does hair as black women. IT's fascinating to know that it is actually something that's part of our history n DNA. even tho we were made to hate our hair, if funny how we still have the most creativity when it comes hair. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Thank you!!!! I've been saying this for YEARS..... wearing wigs and hair extensions have been part of our culture for CENTURIES!!! IT'S has NOTHING to do with hating our own hair.....WE LOVE DIVERSITY, (when it comes to hair and hairstyles).
😂 A new hairstyle every week in secondary school (in schools that allow) meaning get you are wearing a different style every week. And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get your hair done! 🙂
Yaaaaaaaaasssssss!!! Come truu Queeeeeensss!!!! Talk about Editorial; I'm seeing quite a few would-be models. I did a fricking fist pump when the Ancient Egyptians and Nubians came up- so many people like to deny it, but they were, and are, in fact, Africans. Those headrests, and those huge wigs probably use to help with cushioning, don't lie! Bless you for this. It's often difficult for some people, even black people, to accept the fact that before slavery most Africans weren't picky-picky 'ead, grunting tribal people who used bone for everything from weapons to jewellery and had no form of "advanced civilization" (no no the Ancient Egyptians weren't *African* they were White- wait no, a Melting Pot- wait no, Middle Eastern! They subjugated the Nubians so they definitely couldn't have been *Black*! Mali who? Benin What? Ethiopian Where?). We had fashion, we had style. From Afros to Braids to Puffs to Pompadours to Twists to Braid-hawks to Fro-hawks and a lot more. We had Hair (capital H) To The Gods! Sometimes literally. We had (have) it goin on! Things like this is what gets me so misty eyed when I see how many Black People are going Natural; we reclaiming our Heritage. Shaking off those shackles of Mental Slavery. Black *is* in fact Beautiful- Undeniably so. I actually wish this was longer- I would have loved to see more Egyptian and South African looks. This short gem was still amazing though. I look forward to looking at more of your work.
I am SO glad I ran across your channel. Definitely a new subbie and sharing this info. I can't wait to check out your website. Thanks for sharing this. A lot of sisters need to wear Afrocentric wigs if they're going to look like someone; immolate yourselves over others. Love it! Keep up the good work Bro. BlackPower!!
THE MORE I WATCH 'HOME TEAM', THE PROUDER I BECOME OF OUR AFRICAN HERITAGE! WHAT DOES BOTHER ME IS, WHEN YOU SEE BLK WOMEN ON T V , THEY ARE ALL WEARING LONG EUROPEAN HAIR STYLES. WHAT HAPPENED TO "SAY IT LOUD, I'M BLACK & I'M PROUD!"??
Thank you for blessing us with that history lesson on hair Im considered Creole from Lousiana Ive been doing black haircare professionally for 22 years. I own and operate a 5 star salon in Houston Texas, Salon Adeaux. Im big on history, and sharing this video will bring me and my clients such joy. Im also very proud of my Ancestors and blessed to have made hair skills. So seeing these beautiful women brings me so much pride and happiness. Blessings love
Your documentaries are so peaceful, so comforting, so educational. I am so glad to have discovered you. Blessings, Nita #knowthyself #rememberyourancestors
HomeTeam History it would be a good idea. I heard many Africans in America have devilized Asante due to their major contribution to the Atlantic slave trade
HomeTeam History My hair is unique amongst my family. It isnt straight or curly but spiked similar to a mixture of east asians and africans. some say its because of my asian ansestry but i dont think that is, i think it is an Asante trait but im not sure?
Beautiful❤..i wish more American women would let their natural hair grow and teach their daughters to love who they are and do the same. I would love to see how it would make a creative comeback.
You are right! He did not speak on men’s hair. For example the Masai men keep their hair long!covered in oils and red mud(not sure how to call it. It’s mostly done in thin like braids and adorned with Masai jewelry..... I miss seeing them now that I am no longer in my country. It’s quite amazing when you see it in person even as a native myself. Mmmh quick thought popped in my head - on the contrary their women shave their heads. When I go back I need to inquire why that is the case lol. I know there’s google but I’d rather get first hand info #menshairtoo 😂
Hahaha...you're from Kenya I bet...I'm Kisii, and my mom tells me that back in the day, in my community, men wore dreadlocks while women had bald heads...well...that's wonderful still ...I love my people...African culture is so diverse, rich and beautiful, it's so amazing...I love my people...
@@Prettywinsn Yoruba land in the olden days, men used to braid their hair in cornrows esp the Sango worshippers- Sango is one of the Yoruba gods, he was the god of thunder...I believe some of them still do it till today
I really hate that hair scale. So many Black people cared about "What grade hair someone had" & now there's an actual guide to grading Black hair. A damn shame.
Knowing the grade helps you know how to take care of your hair. It has helped grow my hair from half inch to 7 inches after the big chop. I buy products according to my hair grade my hair loves it and is growing like crazy i will be at least 14 inches by my bday. So its good information
it isn't for black hair, and it isn't a grading scale. It's a descriptive scale, and it's for everyone. I'm a 2B, for example. That simply describes how tightly my hair curls, and what sort of products should be used on it. It is a tool to help people take care of their hair better, rather than a judgement cast on someone. Since so many people have had their traditions taken away from them, tools like this are important for helping people live healthy lives.
YES, I KNOW THIS ALREADYBUT NONE OF THIS WAS THE ASPECT I WAS REFERRING TOO. NONE OF YOUR COMMENTS ARE THE ASPECT OF GRADING I WAS REFERRING TO BUT THAT'S STILL COOL & OK.
@@latishabrown6911 I get what you're saying and yes it's a tool, a tool that we absolutely should NOT married to. I follow it, but VERY loosely. Its own creator admitted that it was low-key problematic, and there's no denying that.
See how nothing's changed...how many YT videos have we seen with some of these same hairstyles being introduced as "new"styles for those going natural?? Amazing 😉
I always hear about hair in Africa except the southern region😢 Im trying to learn about history of hair where I am from and I was so happy when you brought up Southern African women too👏
Wonderful video! I just started wearing my natural 4c kinky hair almost 3 years ago. I am totally in love with it. I'm thankful for the ladies who dared to explore their natural beauty before me. It takes seeing beauty in others before seeing it in ourselves. I never knew what my real hair was like due to early heat damage and neglect. I subbed and look forward to checking out more of your vids about our awesome amazing powerful and beautiful history.
Fantastic video. Great way to start the conversation and research on this topic. I admit I was once guilty of thinking that African hair was only coily, coarse and kinky. But have since been illuminated and edified after watching similar videos. It's what we've been taught in the Caribbean for example, given our diverse backgrounds and mix of races/ethnicities... We need to educate our women and men. I have actually gone on a natural hair journey and it's now been a year. I feel so powerful even though I was first daunted, having had relaxed hair from a child.
Nefertiti's "wigs" or "hats/crowns" were actually not wigs or crowns but her real hair growing upwards in a hightop fade and a gold alice band on it (in the famous picture of her bust) as well "dreadlocks" inspired by Nubians as you said! Even Queen Kia and the pics you showed... maybe it wasn't "Nubian wigs" that were popular but Black women all doing their hair in the popular Nubian style. All those pictures you showed were not women wearing wigs, it was their real hair. We have just been brainwashed to think it was hats/wigs.
Steven Lee the moral of the story is we as black women can do whatever the fucc we want to our hair. Been doing it since the beginning of time!!!!! If we want or hair if we want weave if we want Braids if we want locks if we want a big ass fruit basket on top of or hair we do that shyt and we will keep on doing whatever we choose to our hair. Facts!!!!
I love this video, but the ending, " love thyself, dont forget your ancestors" amazing and will do.. I cant forget them with a piece of them growing out of my head ^_^ ..that I will no longer cover up .. Thr more you educate yourself on black history the less shame you feel and more empowerment and contentment in who u are is imparted into you :D love these videos.
you can't explain the beauty of the black race to races that has no recognition of what being black even mean..the black race were strong together and will continue to be regardless of all the wickedness that surrounds us...

Not only that African women are the most beautiful among every race.
We are naturally beautiful and smart with lot's full of ideas.

If i knew my hair would be this damaged ,i would have never relaxed it in my teenage yrs. We need to teach our daughters better.
Thank you!
Sindyred I would love to read this dissertation!!! Go for it, Sister!!!!
I feel so powerful even though I was first daunted, having had relaxed hair from a child.
goodluck! 👌👌👌👌💟💟💟💟
This is my topic also for my final project for college. Send me some information I can research on.

Wow not one racist white or Ottoman Turk here ( Arab nowadays), so glad I found this channel.
about 50% arabs are muslim. the other roughly 50% are christian. islam is the only true religion.
Turks are not the same as Arabs.
Nancy Haynes why u so pressed?
@@arnoldsgrorm Are you that stupid?
I remember my great grand mother saying to me once, when I asked why Yorubas venerated women, more so than most other cultures,
she said "Men may be the heads, but women are the neck, if the neck doesn't allow it, the head will go nowhere.."
Synergy/Equilibrium/Balance is the Yoruba way.
+KarlinRex
I'm Igbo, but I still love your response my Nigerian brother.
What about black men hair (no disrespect) but black men hair is largely forgotten but black women need to see how beautiful theyre natural selves are.

You are right to the core. I grew up in Nigeria. My dad used to take me to the village to spend time with both sides of my grand parents. I saw all these styles.

So now how about a history of African male hair? Men have hair too lol.
Timothy Brown lol
You are right! He did not speak on men’s hair. For example the Masai men keep their hair long!covered in oils and red mud(not sure how to call it. It’s mostly done in thin like braids and adorned with Masai jewelry..... I miss seeing them now that I am no longer in my country. It’s quite amazing when you see it in person even as a native myself. Mmmh quick thought popped in my head - on the contrary their women shave their heads. When I go back I need to inquire why that is the case lol. I know there’s google but I’d rather get first hand info #menshairtoo 😂

Pathetic🔥
See how nothing's changed...how many YT videos have we seen with some of these same hairstyles being introduced as "new"styles for those going natural?? Amazing 😉
Thank you much for this educational and highly informative video!! Excellent work!!
Great video. We enjoyed it. Asante sana Home Team!

Most definitely one of your best videos. Keep up the good work brotha
Thr more you educate yourself on black history the less shame you feel and more empowerment and contentment in who u are is imparted into you :D love these videos.
you can't explain the beauty of the black race to races that has no recognition of what being black even mean..the black race were strong together and will continue to be regardless of all the wickedness that surrounds us...
thanks for taking the time to learn and research such tribal and region based hair styles and patterns. much success to you
3:36 - I love that hair style on the left. I have done my locs in a similar style.
