Just one comment. As to seat belts in flight, I was on a cross continental flight, JFK to LAX; we were over Nevada where we encountered significant turbulence. The 1st officer told us to fasten our seat belts. I complied. The gentleman seated right beside me scoffed at the command. I didn't say anything, then the real turbulence hit, which resulted in the plane lurching downward very aggressively. The man w/o his belt hit the above compartment. He literally flew upward and gashed his forehead on something and bled like a stuck pig, as they say. He remained semi-conscious while the attendants did what they could. He deplaned at LAX on a stretcher. Need I say more?

Two months ago we hit severe turbulence [reported to ATC] and it was scary! I have 12,000 hours total time, 10,000 of that in Part 121 airline service, and I've never felt a plane tossed around the way our 767-300F was tossed around! This out of the blue on a smooth afternoon. We were 25-30 miles north of a severe convective cell over Missouri, and I thought for sure we were well clear. Obviously we were not! If you have a continuous generalized tonic-clonic seizure for 5-10 minutes or if you have several seizures in short succession, the recommendation is that you may need to consider it as a medical emergency. Then it's up to the pilot. Or if you have a GTCS and injure yourself then it may become another form of medical emergency.

Most passengers had removed their seat belts (It was roughly 2/3 of the passengers that did so), and 2 of them received moderate injuries (I believe one had a concussion, and the other had broke an ankle), several of the others walked off the plane with bruises forming. As a former pilot I had left my belt on and wasn't injured. After that clear air turbulence, most passengers had their belts on. The dude who said you don't really need a seat belt is an idiot.

I remember reading a story about a flight attendant calling 911 while on board a plane because there was a guy on board who she thought was drunk and was flashing a gun around and just acting very strange. The plane got diverted (obviously) and boarded by police who took the man into custody. It turned out the man was a federal marshal and was allowed to have the gun on board. I think he ended up getting fired but I'm not sure. Would be cool if you could do a video on this story.

My son had a meltdown and I keep getting sick. I suffered from migraines, that off set the nausea. One absolute Angel of a FA was right there to help. I don't know how but she knew how to hold and rock my son to get him calmed and had a couple ice packs brought over for me. It was a 4 hour flight but she rarely went far. Within minutes she had my son from meltdown mode to completely enthralled with the mechanics of flight. He is still obsessed with planes and flying and wants to be a pilot when he grows up. He's high functioning and has gotten much better with time. I kept thanking her, she would just give this calming nonjudgmental smile of reassurance. Such a wonderful woman.

Just a side note; when I was first learning to fly, I heard all kinds of rookie pilot jokes. But I have to say my favorite one is, two rookies were flying in a new jumbo 747. Boy were they impressed! Half way through the flight, the pilot came on and said, I’m sorry folks but we just lost our number one engine. We’re in no danger. It’s just going to delay our arrival time. The two rookies nodded and said okay, that’s fine. Fifteen minutes later, the pilot came back on and announced, I’m sorry folks but we just lost our number two engine. We’re still not in any danger, it’s just going to delay our arrival time. The two looked at each other and nodded. Fine, that’s fine. When the pilot came on again, the younger rookie said, if we lose one more engine, we’ll be up here all night!

The pilot descended, then made a turnournd and flew to another airport. Obviously, there was zero visibility and the airport didn't have an automated landing system in place. But he scared the shit out of his passengers in the most funniest of ways.

I am now retired from the airlines. I was a Captain on the 747-400. I am familiar with the FFDO program.
When this program was set in place, there was a lot of opposition by some agencies within the government. Turf issues.
FFDO program is an unpaid volunteer pilot program, they pay for their own ammo, etc. Most people that applied did so because we knew that passengers were getting through security at the time, with unauthorized items and the FFDO program was considered to be the last line of defense to protect the cockpit against a possible hijack.
This program was maligned from the start and got hobbled with SOPs that were impractical and actually dangerous.
Specifically in the area of weapon transport. In other words they tried to torpedo the program. The securing procedure of the weapons at the time was what precipitated that accidental discharge in a flight environment. I hope they changed that after this incident!
They wanted the program to fail!
They covered it up in secrecy.

Your stance on the treatment of facts versus opinions makes sense, for a pilot. As an engineer, I feel the need to remind people that there are lots of grey areas between fact and opinion. (Engineers and scientists work in this grey area, trying to shrink it.) Humans are fallible, even experts and especially authorities. Everything we know is up for debate, and a lot of it is going to change in 10 years. Yes, people should be careful about giving advice on things they aren't familiar with, but it's also important to question what we're told. I learned this lesson the hard way when a glassblowing instructor taught me a technique that led to my hand getting sliced open. I'm just thankful I didn't learn this lesson in a context where my life was at risk.

Remember the Asiana crash in SF? The airplane slammed into a breakwater and cartwheeled through the air hundreds of feet. The only two fatalities were the only two passengers NOT wearing a seatbelt. The seat legs are designed to crumple on impact to absorb some of the impact, and the seatbelt keeps you in place to allow this to help.

    • @samlevine4863
      @samlevine4863 2 года назад +2

The other interesting thing in the final report for the Asiana crash had to do with an exit slide that deployed in the cabin. The slide manufacturer claimed that it deployed because the force on it exceed the design limits. I think it was something like 12 G but the point is that the passengers survived with seatbelts on even though the accident forces might have exceed the design limits. So the conclusion is that the belts are usually not needed but like in your car, you just can't predict when one will save you.

I once was on a Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Seattle when the pilot came on the intercom to say, calmly, that we may have noticed that the plane had turned around and was headed back towards Europe. We might be landing in London or Paris. There was something to do with a volcano in Iceland. They came back on to say that they were heading back to Frankfurt. The plane was met on the runway by ambulances and fire trucks and then the plane was towed to the gate. A new crew came on board and we took off again. When we were over the Atlantic, the pilot came on to explain that the previous pilot had had a heart attack. (Of course there were 3 or 4 pilots on the flight, so there was no danger to those on the plane.) Just before landing in Seattle the pilot came on to let us know that we were the last plane able to leave Europe due to the volcano. All further flights had been cancelled and people were stuck in Europe. It was a flight to remember.

Before I lose the thought I wanted to comment on the "pilots down play" problems in flight. I was flying to Salt Lake City and had a very chatty pilot who, on route from Arizona, tilted the plane left and right to show off his home town, other scenic sites and basically made the entire trip fun. Nice day, sunny, no wind and we were in a descent to land when the plane abruptly accelerated and went skyward. A few seconds later the pilot came on, apologized to passengers, and included the statement "an aircraft was on the runway'".
That is not sugar coating or down playing anything. He was there at the door when we left the plane and most everyone just thanked him for a great landing.

I've only been on a plane a few times, and haven't experienced anything quite as serious as that clip as far as turbulence... but given that the patch we DID hit when I was on the way to America from the UK had us flying at level and then every now and then hit a sudden drop (felt like the sort of drop you got on a rollercoaster) I'm actually glad I listened and belted up.

Hello Pilot Kelsey. While growing up in the 1950s thru the 80s in Los Angeles my father introduced my family to Mike Bates.
He was a plane crash investigator for Douglas Aircraft as well as attending Boeing investigations. He explained why he would
attend both companies investigations..."Both Douglas and Boeing wanted to know what went wrong with their own planes as
well as the other guys. No matter where in the world a plane went down, he would go. He himself had been a jet test pilot in his
early years. One day I asked Mike what is the most important thing for me to do as a passenger. Wear a seat belt..follow the
flight crew and attendants instructions. Don't fly in bad weather.

About six months ago I was on a flight out of Ontario to San Jose California, actually with Vegas to Ontario Ontario to San Jose, in Las Vegas they hold us back for like an hour, because the starter of an engine gave out, that freaked me out I got out of the flight and floor the next one, and when I got back home I realized, what would happen if I would’ve got out of a perfect OK plane, to go on a plane that would’ve met its demise, that was kind of creepy.

Too bad that attitude was dropped after the companies merged and no longer had much domestic competition. (also left a lot of room for airbus to rise, though they aren't any better from a management point, maybe worse as the EU investigators have fiscal incentive to protect their subsidy child.)

And I do find the bit about the investigators curious as well; never heard of it, but then again, corruption happens.

I was on a short domestic flight once where a passenger's heart stopped while the aircraft was on final approach. A nurse attended to him until we landed, then everyone patiently remained seated at the gate while EMS came on-board and took him off ASAP. I later saw him sitting in a wheel chair in the terminal so thankfully he was ok.

Regarding the FFDO, the holster they used was public knowledge so it is ok to mention that the FFDO program insisted on using an absurd holster/lock arrangement and that was involved in the accidental discharge.

Just an observation from a 62 year old. Since you mentioned fashion, it's never really new.
Probably 10 to 15 years ago there was this new fad.
Some teenagers were wearing the slacks that had a strap in the bottom that would wrap around under their feets. It was the new thing, my words not theirs.
My Mom used to wear the same type of slacks in the mid 60's.
My 21 year old Niece was visiting me from the University. I didn't say anything but she was sporting something "new".
A pair of jeans that flared out around from about the knee downwards.
There was even a song out by Derek and The Domino's. It was called Bell Bottom Blues. Yep late 60's early 70's I remember my Sister and Cousin's wearing them. And they were called Bell Bottoms. 😂

In Germany, buses need to have seat belts since 1999 (except city lines), you can be fined if you don't use them, just like in your car. But I guess it's harder to enforce, I can't imagine police stopping a bus and trying to prove that some of the passengers weren't wearing their seatbelts before they were stopped (if they are not too stupid to put them on them while the bus is slowing down..).

I think it’s also cuz some buses have the poles and leather straps that hang from the ceiling for people standing up to hold onto where there’s no more seats available. Riding a full Disney bus after park close and having to stand because three ECVs were loaded on first and took up some of the seating space isn’t fun when you have a sore back and sore feet and you weren’t far enough towards the front of the line to get a remaining seat XD In hindsight I probably should’ve waited for the next bus.

@@patriot692 I obviously should have expressed my self better. I think everybody should wear their seatbelts, I just think too many people won't do it despite it would be better for their own safety, and sadly it's not easy to enforce a rule when you don't really have to fear consequences if you break it.
