It's the spring on extruder!
I really like the idea. Some 3D printing groups are kind of ugly to people asking more or less beginners questions. They forget that everyone was starting at a given time. And they forget as well, that not everyone wants to become a nerd or pro on 3d printing. For your question if this is helpful: of course it is, as well as your offer to post issues on your facebook page. I really appreciate the mix of addressing different levels of users by your channel. Can't wait for more of such stuff.
I totally agree that we need more beginner material. I have been printing for over 2 years now and I feel as though I know a lot now. But I had to learn everything from Google at one point. And it can take along time. That being said if a person doesn't have enough mechanical sense to check things like the hobbed gear for extrusion issues. Probably in the wrong hobby. If its esteps or something software side I totally understand being lost.
Definitely with you on that one! Or they just tell you to get another printer. I got a DaVinci Mini w+ and yes, I know that's not exactly a great printer and the customer suppport is just horrible and underwhelming - At least here in Germany. But I'm a totally noob, I know how to use CAD software, but only as far as it isn't too different from what I used for my architecture studies. The only thing I'd manage to get done if you put a tool in my hands other then pen, pencil or brush is probably getting myself harmed, so I needed one that was pre-assembled. And that one was the only one that our EDV - tech was selling...

Yes! This will be a very helpful series! Often, with facebook groups, you get a lot of contradicting answers and end up more confused than you where to begin with
Please continue series, I feel like a lot of channels have moved off the "basic" troubleshooting stuff. This is actually the stuff I enjoy the most even though I know a lot now there is still more to learn, so please keep it up.

A montage of Joe saying words like veedio would be awesome! There are so many weird issues that can pop up from time to time. The good part is that now a days there's a huge community and people like Joe willing to help. I remember the first video I saw about 3d printing was Jerry (Barnacules) with his Robo R1 and I thought I'm not alone with the 3d printer thing... how far we have come.
This video was amazing and exactly what i needed to stop my printer from flying out a window. cant wait to get home and play with coasting settings and ensuring my z-axis wheels aren't too tight. think this will be a great series. thanks heaps
This is a really good idea, especially the way you are doing this by including explanations as to how and why the printer is misbehaving. I remember starting out (as it was at most two years ago), and looking back I mis-diagnosed almost everything, then proceeded to make lots of mods/changes following various videos and so on, that kind of worked around issues but didn't actually solve the underlying problem. That came back to haunt me later, and I doubt I'm the only person that happens to. The explanation helps people understand what's going on, and so to become able to figure stuff out themselves later. It also helps the user figure out if the particular diagnosis does fit their own situation.
I just ordered my first printer, so I really hope this series takes off :) Good work as usual.

Thanks Joe for sharing printing issues. I think you pointed out my printing problem (nozzle to bed height). I'll re-level the bed and try again. The cable clamps printed fine until the top snap edge printed...then it printed separated strings on all four clamps.
Joe, this was great as are all of your videos but this series will help so many. Please continue these.
Great video Joe and great to see you empathize with new comers to the hobby. Just a suggestion ....maybe create a basic list people should fill in when asking questions. Like machine brand/ name . Type cartesian/ delta . Bowden or direct extruder . Slicer used . Filament used Temps ( bed & extruder) . Together with others i try to help people in the groups on thingyverse . Always amazed when people post ...help my printer doesn't work without even mentioning the type of printer they have. A standardized list would be a great help to those of us trying to help people. I think you'll find that the main reason why people aren't posting enough information is they just don't know where to begin. I've gone through a lot of this myself, where things that are obvious now certainly weren't when I began. There's a lot that can go wrong 3D printing. I know because I've experienced a lot of it. One of my biggest pet peeves is experienced people claiming 3D printing is easy. It's not... not by a long shot, as this video shows.
Keep this series going. It will help smart people with obscure problems as well.
That's great! Please continue this series. I've started printing in August'18 on my Ender 3 and had a lot of issues, that I've mostly fixed with help from such kind of videos. So I think it will help a lot of beginners like me to get better prints. Thanks a lot! P.S. It's cold in Leipzig too :/

I’ve been a subscriber since shortly after I bought my Tronxy P802M and needed a little help learning how to get started. I’ve learned that it’s not only some people online but sometimes people you talk to in person. I told a coworker that has a 3D printer that I had bought one and he started telling me I should have bought a different one, (one like his...) and if I have any problems don’t come to him because he won’t know the answers. Never spoke to him again, but a few months later he quit anyway.

before i got into 3d printing, i watched a months worth of videos on kit building or problems and lots of research to the point when i built my first kit, i knew what to watch for, fix while i was putting it together and what safety things should be installed before i turned it on. my first printer was the CTC i3 clone from ebay, 2nd is the anet a6 which i got a very good deal on and the 3rd the Ender 3. working on building a hypercube evolution now.
Thanks for explaining coasting so I could understand it. Now I know what to adjust to stop all the oozing

I've been printing on my ender 3's for about a year and a half now and didn't know there was a coasting setting in Cura... this is probably the solution for an issue I've had for months now and have been so irritated with. Thank you for making this video and hopefully that works.

When I clicked on this video I did not expect the very first issue to be mine, but yep my extruder gear had shifted itself out of the way; huge thanks!
I have an Anet A8, it was the least expensive useful printer I could find at the time. It has been a very easy printer to set up and troubleshoot, and I am very satisfied, even impressed by the quality of prints I’ve been able to produce with a variety of filaments. I honestly cannot justify upgrading to a more expensive printer unless it is for a larger print bed, which for now the 220x220mm bed it has is still meeting my needs. The software has improved a lot in the year or so that I’ve had the printer, between Marlin and Cura, and that has made it much easier to get improvements in print quality more than anything. I did have to replace the print nozzle because the original one did get clogged and degraded my prints, and it took me a while to realize that was the problem, but after installing a better quality nozzle it is now flawlessly producing quality prints with minimal effort. Another thing I did was buy a wide roll of capton tape for the bed. That and hairspray is all I need to get my prints to stick reliably to the bed and give me a nice surface finish. A good inductive bed leveling sensor is also a great addition I’d recommend, but not entirely necessary if you can take the time to level the bed manually.
This is a very good idea and explain the terms we use in the ed printer world. Everybody starts for zero .everybody needs to learn . The prusa guide is very good to learn if you start printing.
You should create a playlist for these troubleshooting videos, you've already helped me with a few issues, it would be nice to have it all in one spot. Like Netflix binge watching.
Constuctive Feedback: Your troubleshooting hints are valuable and those problems are interesting. The only way for you to improve this video is to reduce the audio background noise. Keep up the good work, I am hooked.
This is a great idea for a series. Maybe you could set some guidelines to help people reporting a problem i.e. Printer type, filament type and brand, printer settings and if needed a small video.

Thanks for the video man. I'm new to 3D printing and have been learning. I haven't encountered any of the issues in the video but it's nice to know so I can keep an eye out for future issues. Because what I've learned already from 3D printing is that anything can happen. Right now I have quality printing down. Now I'm really grinding the wire to get that same quality but shaving down the print time. So far it's going well and I'm loving it. Keep popping out videos!

I like this idea, and not just for the newbies getting into this massively more accessible class of tools nowadays. Honestly, after a few years of taking a hammer to this screw, I still don't consider 3D printing a "learned process", like I do with many other hobbies I've picked up along the way. I know what tiny gaps in the layers are, what spider webs between inner corners could be, sharp bottom surfaces, pillowy top surfaces, bowed corners, and a few other things. Beyond that, maybe? I might have developed an intuition for a thing or two, or I might not have seen anything like it, because those were the issues I encountered and fixed.
Heck, I remember I just about pulled my beard out sorting a PLA clog that made its way to the heat break on my first bot. The advice I got was essentially, "That's going to cost you a bit." To this day, I still think that would've cost me a bit even if I knew a thing or two, but what I didn't know was how to avoid being in that situation in the first place. I knew jack about maintenance, about cleaning between different materials, and that sort of rigamarole. If I didn't know how to just clean my nozzle, I'd probably have dropped my first bot on Craigslist and never built the next two.
You'll certainly help folks starting out, and you might even help out the rest of us eventually by just sharing things we didn't think about.

I had the same issue with the extruder gear and had posted to facebook about it. I believe it is a quality control issue in factory assembly.
The one that was close to the bed might also be indicated by the cog at the top that feeds the filament might make a clicking noise as it tries to push more in but can't so the teeth step over the filament. Have seen the coasting looking faults on some of my prints but because they are utility and don't have to look good I havent bothered trying to sort it out. Now I will look into it. Thanks
I quit asking on 3D printing pages. The first print I did I got a lot of backlash for not knowing the issue. I’ve asked one other question since and though one or two might help there are many that would rather down you. Now that I know more I do try to help where I can but I’m no where as smart as you or others.
I can definitely say that I am wrong many times, but by helping and listening I learn and that’s what I want this series to be all about :)
I JUST got my Anycubic kobra 2 neo set up last night and have printed some benchies, first prints ever.
Having some mild stringing issues, can see the infill on a few prints a tiny bit and it almost looks like the nozzle is dragging through the layers a tiny bit.
I’m just using the preset stuff from the box. Still gotta learn to tweak all this but I’m super excited
I think this is a great video! My main issue with the 3D printing community in general is their reliance on Facebook to convey information. Our family does not use Facebook. We don't have accounts, we don't browse and furthermore, we don't even allow the domain past our router. I'd love to participate in the community, but I WILL NOT use Facebook.....ever.

The spring on my Ender 3 extruder has become weak over time. I printed a shim on my MK3 and it seems to have fixed my under extrusion proplems. :)
At 5:30, writing in pencil first then teaching over it in marker could be a great "cheating" maneuver!

Late to the game on this one but extremely helpful! Just got an ender 3 s1 pro & it works but no bed stick, string curling by nozzle, nozzle drips a bit before printing & what does print has to be slow or nothing & still comes out with heavy lines. Reddit has not been helpful due to the walk out over 3rd party apps and I dont facebook so Im kinda SOL but this gave me things to check. Hopefully it will be an easy fix

Many years later... thank you sir. I just bought my 1st printer and i recieved it 2 days ago. A Qidi x-plus II, and i cant even get through my "printer test model". Ive been trying for the past 2 days to print a simple test print that is pre-loaded on the printer from factory. I have my pla pro from polymaker and the cheap red pla spool sent with the printer... in a dryer. I cant figure it out, but my all of my failed prints completely mess up in the same exact spot, and it looks like the "coasting/posting problem". Most videos that are even for "brand new beginners" talk like you already know all the basics, terms, meanings, parts, definitions, etc etc etc... they use language in their videos like you should already know this stuff, even for a person like me that is only 2 days of experience EVER in my life with 3d printing... or even trying to learn troubleshooting. Thank you very very VERY much my friend.
Great episode. Keep these coming, it's a great way for folks to really understand different print scenarios. Even if you repeat the problem, it's interesting to see slightly different variations of the problem and you explaining it's the same issue.
Would definitely like to see more videos like this. Tom has done it before, but his are live streams and are usually a couple hours so hard to find anything afterwards. Maybe put in the description the issues/problems and the time in the video so people can find it easier.

Fantastic brother! I have/had a couple if these issues I've worked out on my own and watching this video gave me some new ideas to try. Right now I'm currently dealing with little burnt blobs making their way into my prints.
Also, another way this kind of thing can happen is that the bed is way too high to the point the extruder practically cannot push the filament out and would end up grinding the filament during the 1st layer so the higher layers also cannot print properly.
Initially it was a clog, I swapped the nozzle and forget to re-calibrate bed level, that is how this happened if you are curious. Takes a week to figure out ;)
for the issue a 6:40 ish, thats just a spring tensioning issue that is almost universal with the ender 3. I solved it by printing a new tensioner arm and increasing the spring tension.
My main issue with my Ender 3 is that it is impossible to level, the bed is far too warped and the place I got it from is not interested in helping. I even added BL Touch which helped a bit, but it does not compensate for all of the warping as I does not measure the entire bed. I will be ordering a glass plate for it which should hopefully resolve these issues. Thanks so much for your channel.
The last one you showed seems to be closer to the issue I am having. Where it would print really well for the first layer, second then after about the the 3rd or 4th the nozzle would start scratching the previous layers especially at the infill. The walls were perfect and printed nicely. It was almost as if the z axis was not moving up enough after each layer. . For two weeks I was trying to figure this out and I loosened the wheels, adjusted the two nuts that tighten the z screw so they were not too tight and had some play. I made sure the x gantry was level and pretty much readjusted everything I could think of. This problem would not go away. So I had to bring it in for a tune up at a 3d print shop. I know part of the "fun" is solving problems for these 3d printers because it feels so good when you fix something. But two weeks was just getting too frustrating. I wish there were videos or anything on this issue. Most videos, articles I see seem to be a bit dumbed down. I have seen this layer scratching issue so many times in forums but no one seems to give advice on this as these are the actual issues that do happen. The rest of the issues occur because of improper bed leveling and aligning things properly which should be something everyone should get down first and foremost and not that hard to do.

Excellent video Joe! And my own experience is saying your analysis is spot on in these cases, so this would be a good help for the people new to 3D printing. Much better then the FB info given by most. Also first thing i thought with the Ender3 photo that was not extruding well, was the extruder gear, so nice to see that was right :P

The learning curve is steep. There isn't going to be too much genuine help and every little bit benefits all. So the least I can do is support you with a like and a comment. Might even subscribe. Still on the fence about that.
Another thought....it's not that people get upset over "dumb" questions so much as the fact that those seemingly dumb questions could be answered by entering a couple of words in a search box and hitting enter. People like to be spoon-fed information and cannot be bothered to do a little research before posing a question.
Ok so I just did what u told me and that fixed that problem, but now during the middle of the print the extruder stops working/no longer spins and is air printing but I have no clue why. I really thank u for replying cause I look up to so much... plus this is my last issue and need HELP😁👍🏾
I am having a lot of z banding issues on all my printers all of sudden :/ Tevo Tornado, Ender 3 (2 of them), tevo flash, anycubic chiron running right now, and all of them show z-banding. Only exception is on chiron it is VERY regular.

Excellent as usual. I believe someone (hint:you!) could make a lasting contribution to the 3dp community by making a library of simple models which could rapidly diagnose various printer problems. Similar to computer diagnostics, there would be a flowchart of which models to run to isolate various problems. The key here is keep-it-simple. Each model should complete in a few minutes. I think folks would pay good $ for such a library if effective. I would! Thanks for your great contributions.
Man, I have the same issue. Its printing too thin. I changed the nozzle and no changes in Cura. I was about to throw away the printer, then I found this video. Will check the feeder. Thanks
