Awesome video. Just done a 2005 honda odyssey. I dropped the exhaust flange and removed the end bracket. Gave me enough room to turn the steering rack and remove without dropping the sub frame.
This video was of great help saving time on a 2000 Odyessy. Thank you for the details and tips in very practical sequence! I did not need to totally drop subframe; was able to leave the R frt bolt in, and drop all other attach points. Used 2 floor jacks and 3 ground jack stands. Took about 5-6 hours.
Thanks for the video bro! I just finished installing a new rack and pinion on my 06’ odyssey because your video, i don’t think I could have done it with out this vid!
Great video Bud! I am a tire tech and I want to become a automotive mechanic eventually. By February of next year I will be able to go for my ASE's. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
Thanks for making this video. All Data was saying to remove the exhaust. I'm glad it's not true, because those bolts can break. Unfortunately I have to do it on the floor... pray for me.
My mechanic told me that this what happened with my 2010 Odyssey after I had to replace my cv joints twice I hope this will take care of the noise I'm hearing
Awesome! Thanks for this! I stumbled across your channel and have now subscribed. It's good to see you have quite a few honda odyssey videos. I'll be needing them! Next time I'll buy a Toyota Sienna instead :-)
Sancte Alphonse thank you for subscribing! All the new Toyota products are amazing you would be very happy with any Toyota. Not to knock Hondas I love them to just think Toyota is putting out a better product right now.
My steering is a little loose on my 2006 Odyssey. On bad roads the steering wheel wants to "follow" the wheels a little if you know what I mean. I've had the van now for years and I don't remember it being like this years ago. Could that bracket bushing need to be replaced? I'm not having any other issues with the car and as far as I can tell the rack is not leaking. I did have a leak in the power steering system caused by those bad o-rings but I replaced them and no more leaks. Thanks!
I have a 06 Odyssey Touring and it has like a creaking/grinding sound almost while turning the steering wheel either direction sitting still or in motion makes that sound. During the winter and beginning of spring it makes no noise at all but as soon as it get hot outside it starts doing it again. what do you think could be the problem?
Chad Creech there is a TSB on this problem and fix it very simple. The high-pressure hose going into the pump has a bad O-ring in it sucks air in and makes this noise. To fix it all you need to do is take a 10 mm socket and remove one bolt pull the hose off change out the O-ring and put it back on filling it up the Honda approved power steering fluid.
How to Automotive Thank you. I have seen those videos but no one I found had a video of the sound so I wasn't 100% sure if that was my problem. Thanks a bunch Ill try it tomorrow
I have an extremely similar situation with my 08 Touring! I have been dealing with a mystery noise and it only happens when it is warm/hot out. Mechanics love to laugh when I say that, no one believes me. So infuriating!!! Did you figure out what it was? Mine is a metallic clank. I have a playlist of videos of the sound on my RUclips. I am in for about 1500 trying to chase this problem. Control arms first, now shocks/struts, still the sound. Please help....I am at my wits end. I have spoken to so many mechanics, friends, strangers, FB, YT, Reddit, forums. I am so tired of this noise and not knowing if it is even safe to be driving it. 😖
I see you drop the sub-frame just enough where you can slide out the rack & pinion. It looks like you lower the sub-frame more than enough to cause some damage on top of the engine were vacuum lines, hoses and some electrical connections (etc) can be pulled and damage?
JORGE BOYAS yes I supported the engine so he didn't move just the frame. You'll need lots of Pole Jack's floor jacks jackstands that type of stuff to do this. I also have an Injun waste that goes across the top of the motor that can hold it in place.
How to Automotive Thank you buddy...I got a 2005 oddessy. ..The only thing I wish you could tell us is why you changed it and why one would change the rack and pinion....I replaced my outer rods on 2000 Honda Accord ex. .then took it to get aligned at tires plus...2 new tires...they put the new tires on the back of car not the front...BUT my car still pulls to the right. ...just a little will not go straight. ..so is my rack messed up.....thanks...
KangoKid Kidd most the time you would replace a rack and pinion due to leaking or if the steering is binding. Rack and pinion don't usually make the carpool that could be a camber caster or a tow issue on your alignment. Hondas are very finicky about their toe settings It has to be right on or it will pull. Sometimes a bad tire itself can make a car pull l to.
KangoKid Kidd I don't have any videos on alignments my shop is small and can't fit and alignment rack init. This is something you would definitely need an alignment machine to check
It may be posted somewhere in the comments but I can't see it, so I was wondering if you could tell me what the book labor is on how many hours it takes to do this job?
How to Automotive thank you.. so for a old retired, broken back, disaster mechanic, 8-10 hours.. thanks for the great Video. I was a Subaru / Chevy/Dodge /jeep/Saturn Mechanic .. I always appreciate your videos, show and tell is a FANTASTIC way to learn. . ..
I'm watching this while trying to just get a rack bushing on a '08 nissan quest. i thought it would be an easy job but its turning out to be a nightmare lol.
i just really wish nissan made their rack bushings easy accessible ! this would really help my life lol. thanks for the video its very usefull. i am going to try to take out the whole rack in the morning, hopefully i wont have to drop the frame !!
Had my rack and pinion replaced by repair shop but now engine shuts off when going over large bumps, electricity remains to the car, only noticed because I could no longer accelerate and coasted to a stop. Turning the car off and on again car and engine started like normal. Suggestions?
Would the rack and pinion be causing my steering wheel to be hard to turn to the left but not to the right? I just fixed my low pressure line after it blowing out when it got -20 here, I also replaced the high pressure line before that cuz there was a small leak, but after fixing the LP line my steering wheel is very difficult to turn to the left, like I have no power steering, but it turns to the right just like it should. I’m unsure if this is the issue or if it’s the pump, any help would be great as I’d hate to do this job and buy the parts if it’s not the problem.
@@AntonAtan not sure… timing belt snapped a month or 2 later… rendering the van useless unless I wanted to completely replace or remachine the valves, nope. Sold it for like $600 bucks lol just got a 2014 Subaru Impreza Wagon Sport Premium 5 speed manual, absolutely LOVE IT!
How to Automotive cuz they both have the 3.5 so yeah id imagine it's very very similar. How were the fittings to the rack? We're they a real pain to get at? I've got all the tooling (flared wrenches etc)
Billy C I think on the MDX there's a little bit more room I do recommend using line wrenches for loosening up the lines either crows foot or the lot wrenches themselves
How to Automotive yeah there's nothing worse than trying an open end wrench on a tight fitting. I've got some good flared nut wrenches that always work on brake fittings and such. I remember as an apprentice... Trying to crack tight fuel line fittings. I literally asked my foreman if I could apply heat to them LOL. he looked at me like i was completely insane. Can you imagine if I didn't ask and just took initiative.... Little torch flame to a fuel fitting. Haha the crazy part was I was serious. I didn't even put two and two together.
Gemarl Perry did not remove them out from the car I did unbolted from the subframe. But if you think it's in your way or if it will help you I always say take out what you need.
You should probably explain that if you dont center the rack you're probably gonna need to buy a new clock spring. Great video for r&r minus the fact that you didnt center the rack or explain that you should have the vehicle aligned properly after repairs are complete.

kenneth bourg glad to help and glad to hear everything went well!
Very informative and educational, however my question is what are signs that the rack is bad and needs replacement?
Corae Dread most the time is going to be leaking. Sometimes you’ll have a binding.
Is this the same as for a 2004 Honda Odyssey?
thank you very much
Any way to do this without lowering the subframe?
Thank you for you nice 👍 video who much are the cost to get replacement and the odyssey 2007 ?

Any information on how you identified that the rack was bad? How do you diagnose it is the rack and not the inner tie rods?
Alex McDonough on this vehicle it was leaking fluid from the main seal going into the steering coupler. I need a common symptom would be binding.

Can DIY do this by just jack stand the car? you use three pull jack to support subframe or Rack&Pinion? How DIY use them? thanks a lot!
Joe Cox Yes you can put the car on jackstands in then use the floor jack to jack it up and down.

how much it cost to change the rack and pinion ( part + labor ) . Thanks

how expencive is the labor?
Mauricio Mejia Book is called for about five hours labor. Shop labor rates range from 75 to 120 per hour pending on what airy in the country living.
