Chuck is actually new money. Just because he has a rich dad, doesn't make him old money. Old money needs to be at least three generations old. Bart Bass was a selfmade billionare, it is often mentioned that Bart built himself out of nothing, and he was in fact lower class before. So Chuck is still new money and even his lifestyle reflects that.
I think it's funny that Serena actually is "old money" but she's styled to dress and act more like new money. And Chuck is definitely "new money." Maybe not in his aesthetic, but in the story his father came from nothing (so says he in season one).
No, serena not style as new money , she is the it girl, the fashion icon, who bestfriended haute couture designers. New money wouldnt where vintage ralf lauren dress😂. For Nm, is only luxury, luxury brand. And her approach abt her super exp stuff is soo old money. She never ever blink an eye to lend all girls fr jenny, charlie, or even girl whos uncle yale director. New money? Dont touch my exp stuff! I lock it in security max.
of course Blair is old-money personified, her family on her father's side (Waldorf-Astoria is the Astor family) goes far back as to one of the first families in new york with money, I'm surprised she, and her family aren't richer, or that she didn't have some old grandmother/father that showed up to show how old-money they really were! Like-she should have had some nice family shots on some huge estate like Nate and his old-money family. I don't really think Serena is old money-I feel like her grandfather may have generational-wealth but not as far back to call it "old-money" also much like her mother, I feel like her grandmother cece also married big to get that divorcee cheque, there could be some possibility that she gets her "old-money" from her fathers side since hes supposable a billionare-doctor?? in the book?? Nate is old money like Blair but I think blairs family is older, also I feel he should be richer, since at one point we see into one of his accounts and theres only 100k. he comes from an old, rich family that is very much in the spot light. Chuck isn't old money at all-hes new money if anything, he even states how his father started from nothing and punishes him for having everything in season 1.
From New England and I'm glad someone pointed this out. Chuck and Serena are new money and it actually really shows in both of their personalities and families.
I ALWAYS get stuck in season 4/5 I think I only finished once, I love the first 3 seasons, but for me, after Jenny leaves it's just all over the place. But it's my comfort show, I'm always watching some episode from early seasons while doing stuff around the house/getting ready
Same🙂 even i heard that ed and leighton did not treasure there friendship after 6yrs series.🙁 im sad when i heard that because they should treasure there friendship even they already have there own lives.
As aesthetically pleasing as their fashions are, I feel like I could never be comfortable constantly dressing up for the simplest of occasions and never being allowed to have an 'off day.' I loved a lot of Jenny's and Vanessa's clothes. Even though they're not old money or stargirl types, I feel like I would actually be able to walk around comfortably and not have to suck in my stomach constantly with their style.
I love the fact that they dressed up all the time. As a millennial, I don’t understand how today everyone in the states wears pajama like outfits. Thank heaven in Europe we still make an effort. It shows u respect urself & others in a way too, by putting in effort into ur style.
I think Blair and Nate scream old money/preppy all the time, even when they dress more "casual". Serena is the It Girl, she's a trendsetter, so I think that explains a lot of why she doesn't look old money or new money, she's supposed to be like Paris Hilton (idk) and appeal to different social classes. I would associate her a lot with boho chic as well, as she dresses casual with boho dresses and sandals a lot, colorful accessories, etc. I see Chuck as new money because he has this "try hard" aspect about him, he's always trying to look powerful and respectable, and it shows. He wants people to see how rich he is. I disagree that Nate is the It Boy, no one really cares about what he does, he's just very desired for being beautiful and having a lot of money. He dresses like every rich guy and doesn't stand out, he's not even as interesting as Serena.
love this!! gg perfectly captures the rich nepo kids of the late 2000s even tho i have my likes and dislikes of the reboot i wish they would’ve went and modernized and look at how rich kids are nowadays but do it a unique manner to stand out
I'm watching it again for the 100th time. Blair is my girl ❤. I know she's classist, but I don't care. Lol 🤣. I liked how Blair was always well dressed, but not always "dressed up" unlike Serena. In my opinion anyway. Serena and Chuck are definitely new money. I'll admit that Serena's family money is a lot older than Chuck's, but it's still new compared to Blair and Nate. This show is just iconic, even with all it's flaws, it's truly perfection.
love the video! tho aesthetic wise I would argue blair - preppy (too obvious for old money) , serena - heroin chic (the rich version of it) , nate - old money (more subtle than blair) and chuck - a mixture of the three (which creates the fascination round him)
As far as old money goes isn’t it only Nate really with the Vanderbilts? We don’t know much about Serena’s up bringing her mom grew up in LA (new money) and her dad is a doctor. Blair’s mom is a fashion designer and chucks dad is a hotel buff but we don’t know how long they have had their wealth. Curious.
Actually, Serena appears to come from half-old, half-new money. The old money in the show comes from Lily, specifically Cece (Serena’s grandmother). Cece always had that “disdain” for the lower social classes (never approved of Rufus) that was a common trait in old money types (not as common in new money types especially if their wealth is very recently accumulated, they are more “cautious” in a sense to not tip the scales and fall out of favour with anyone, but Cece never shakes off her prejudices lol so she knows her money is good for a very very long time). And if I recall correctly, she controlled Eric and Serena’s Rhodes (Lily’s maiden name) trust fund (I remember an episode that the two of them discuss getting access to their trust funds earlier than stipulated). In the books (or according to the character wiki pages), the VDWs are Dutch shipping magnates (depending on how far back this goes, this could be new or old money derived but I don’t think it’s ever stated, but I like to think that Serena’s paternal family ran in the same crowd as the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers which I consider to be old money). The Vanderbilts in the show lean more into the “politically powerful family” than they do old money which is not exactly the case for the irl Vanderbilts oops I went off on a tangent. TLDR: I think Nate and Serena are the only ones in the NJBC generically considered to be old money. Chuck and Blair are new money through and through. Disclaimer: I didn’t read the books but I’ve watched the show several times and am quite interested in history so just an analysis!
@@leticiakohyes Chuck is new money, I remember in one of the earliest episodes when Bart bass was telling Lily what he gave up to gain his wealth suggesting he didn’t have it before hand
@@R_S747 Blair’s money doesn’t go enough generations back to be considered old money, and regardless her mother is the one who created generational wealth using her designer brand
I will say that Blair has more of a preppy vibe than actual old money, she played a lot with colors and old money outfits are extremely neutral when it comes to prints.

Charles Bass is Trump. 🤷🏾♀️
exactly, in S2 when blair was hosting a party for the colony club, the old ladies mentioned bart bass being new money in a derogatory way 😂

@@myman2930she kinda goes off on a rant in the show about how well bread she is lol
In the book they mention that the Vanderwoodsen family got rich in the 18th century from owning a shipping company.
In the show, Serena's mother comes from old money, but her father does not.

I adore all these characters' styles, especially that of Blair, Serena and Chuck. The fashion in this show is timeless.
