  • Inadequate housing, rising crime, failing transport, divisive identity politics - London is being badly served by Sadiq Khan.
SDP candidate Amy Gallagher talks to Londoners about their concerns and about her campaign for the London mayoral election.

I really want to vote SDP at this year's election but nobody is standing in my constituency. Please can you stand a candidate there please, you'd definetly get my, and loads of other's, vote trust me.
The SDP would have greater success in non-metropolitan areas. Go outside London!

Socially Conservative and economically centre or centre left is an ideal position for a political party. I hope these people do well in the election.

Probably in reality matches a lot of the working class. Batya Ungar-Sargon has researched this in the US.

I don't think so, I think they are left on the economy but conservative on issues such as controlling immigration

They want to end mass immigration. So net migration of 50,000 but that's more realistic than Zero because we'll need a transition period of training British kids to do the job shortages. SDP have a better plan for the education system than Reform in order to achieve that so SDP gets my vote. Also I'm traditionally left wing so I agree a lot more with their manifesto than Reform's

They're socially conservative and want a severe reduction in immigration.

How is it possible to be economically left-leaning? You either have both feet firmly planted on the left or you're a wishy-washy centrist.

It is quite a common attitude people have. Perhaps, for example, you believe in renationalisation and greater, more progressive taxation but not introducing legislation regarding the likes of gender reform. One of the reasons the red wall turned blue was specifically people that were socially conservative but econmoically left. For the record it is not my own belief, but I know many do feel that way.

It's a pretty common thing among the populists.

The left isn’t a monolith. My impression is that the SDP is similar to traditional Labour.

@@kevinmcfarlane2752 The original SDP was a rejection of the old Labour party. In the 80s there was the feeling amongst many that Thatcher's Conservative was being too dogmatic in her neoliberalism and capitalism causing a lot of suffering to working class comunities with unemployment, while Labour was too tied to the unions and were too dogmatically socialist to result in economic progress. The original SDP were members of Labour that tried to defect to a more pragmatic middle ground. As the Liberal party already held similar policies a union eventually resulted in forming the Liberal Democrats. So if anything, SDP were more like the traditional Liberal party. On saying that, both the Conservatives and Labour saw that there were votes in the middle ground and so moved in this direction with Major on one side and Kinnock/ Smith/ Blair/ Brown on the other, albeit Labour moved more than Conservatives so there was overal a shift to the right. Traditional socialist values of which Labour were founded have been almost completely removed. Corbyn, a politician from the 80s, tried to go back to some of these values, and look what happened to him.
