The growth models of India and Korea are not comparable because of the size and problems of both countries. Let us leave the discussion of that period because it's easy to do postmortem rather than diagnosis of the disease. Arvind ji and Saurabh ji, please get these problems solved by Modi ji so that the unemployment and other related issues are resolved. In my opinion Nehru thought about that period but the Modi regime is forecasting about the next one thousand years. Please also see the fate of the insolvency act and GST regime. Also my suggestion to Mr Saurabh to engage some economists like Prof Arun Kumar to conduct such an interview so that the book is critically discussed. Lastly, selling assets is not called economic reforms. But what can be done is because in this regime only two economists are recognised and will be followed. You may write any number of books or any amount of discussion, only two persons ideas will prevail.

There are a couple of points that the professor missed : 1. Nehru was influenced deeply by his visit to Russia in the thirties where he saw rapid industrialization under Stalin. The industrialization model of second five year plan was influenced by that. 2. South Korea's success in industrialization has a lot to do with cold war politics where USA not only provided maximum aid to South Korea but also opened its markets for Korean exports.
Adding to your second point, the rebuilding of devastated post war European economy after World War 2 was the result of the Marshall Plan undertaken by the Americans, another economic measure taken to combat the Russians during the dawn of the Cold War.

Not remotely the same, when you see that rural consumption is at alarming levels plus rural real wage growth is negative over the last 10 years. At some point, this Govt. has to drive up rural consumption to bring inclusive growth that Dr Panagariya is talking about - and they can't drive up rural consumptions without direct benefits transfer - at least not in the current economic scene.

What I can recollect of times, and my understaning is based on reflection on ancedotal events that stuck with me, as I was too young. Indira ji was pragmatic, and as stated in discussion wanted to privitise at many times was scuttled despite her intent. Case in point is Vizag plant, but ultimately Pranab Mukharjee prevailed, cement though got privitised. Maruti under R. C. Bhargav was able to create automative revolution starting as public enterprise. An economist has liberty to comment in single dimention, but leader who was running country amongst cold war, had myrid of compulsions and had many dimentions to take care of.....
