- Custom Amp Build | $700 'Marshall' Plexi '69 Lead Amp $700 | Built From Scratch! I Built A Custom Marshall Plexi For $700…. On My Dining Table! Here is the Full Build from scratch! Yep! You read that right…. On my dining table! Lol! Late last year I bought an awesome amp kit from the good people at Modulus Amps. Full disclosure, I bought it with my own money and this isn’t in any way a sponsored video. I opted for the 50 Watt ’69 Plexi Lead as I wanted to create an EVH style amp. Here is the full build - boy was it a blast and it turned out AMAZING! Huge thanks and shout out goes to Stefan Hüther at Redstuff Amps, Bryce Boyd at Epic Amps, and Brad Linzy The Guitologist for the inspiration to build an amp (and Stefan for all of the amazing help and advice!). You can check out the kit at the Modulus Amps website. Enjoy and have an amazing day!!!

Great job Jayster! Sounds friggin amazin on a iphone speaker! I can't imagine what it really sounds like in person! You've definitely got my vote ol' man that's for sure. Peace ✌🏻😊☮️🤙🏻🙏🏻 my very good friend. Dana E💫by the way if you get a extra second visit my latest tracks 🤙🏻peace
I had an original Silver Jubilee combo, but honestly I love my JCM 2000 DSL 100 MORE 🤘!!
I used a 1987 jcm800 for years and it was an amazing amplifier the 2205 50 watt then I went to the dsl 2000 and really loved that as well. ✌
I just love the sound of the amp, its's so full, open and organic. You've done a very, very good job!
Thanks so much Robert! I appreciet it. I so so so love this amp! Its been really amazing to play and you're right - very open and organic sounding. I have a video coming up next week (Jake E Lee tone) and I dialed it in just for kicks (JCM800 is the more appropriate amp for that tone) and it sounded totally amazing! Better then the 800 sound imo. Anyways, have an amaaing day.
Hey Jay , great build video about your last project . Looks beautiful , one can see the craftmanship you did . Sounds like a plexi shoul d, so congrats for doing this !
Jay my friend you are a man of many talents! Great job on building this great sounding amp! :-)
Phenomenal sounding amplifier. awesome work on the head shell too.
Jay, you are one of the best incredible humans on the planet. Watching this just put a spring in my day.
Keep on shredding and stay metal 🤘🤘
Very kind of you Shane 😊 🙏 Glad it brought a smile dude! Have an amazing day!
Great work Jay... That is one of the most 'honest' and comprehensive amp builds & testing I've had the pleasure of viewing.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it 😊 🙏 Have an awesome day.
You da man...Jay....absofreaginlutely fantastic.. always inspirational....God bless.
What a great project! You did an incredible job wiring it, and the wooden case is beautiful!! Sounds killer too 🤘🤘🤘!!
Thanks man! Much appreciated 😊 🤘 Have an amazing day!
Wow what great skills you have acquired!! Not only did you tweak/ modify the amp but you built a great cabinet!! Now you have to do videos playing through that head lol..
😳 I was impressed...👍🤘🔥 Amazing job Bro!
I really loved watching you build this amp. Thanks for filming it, man. Glad you got it sorted out in the end, I think the way you explained the issue with the diagram is bound to be helping people for a long time.
Glad you enjoyed it and it was helpful dude. It was a blast building it! I have another amp in the works too so will be filming that soon as well 😊 Have an awesome day!
This was fabulous to watch, Jay. Congrats on such a sweet amp.
Look forward to hear it in July for Jake Month. Waiting for Darkness would surely sound great thru it.. ha.
amazing jay. great job
Absolutely amaaaazing
Nice job brother!!
Awesome job Jay, sounds epic. Love these 50w JMP type amps!
Thanks so much! And thanks for creating such an awesome kit. 800 is next on the list so I will be back soon 😉 Have an awesome day!
Awesome, awesome, awesome. Amazing work, Jay. No, this is not going to be my next project, hahaha. I did pick up a little MArshall MG10CD in a goodwill for $10, which had a destroyed input jack. I ordered the part and installed it, but that'll be my amp build limit for now. However...I am looking at pedal kits :) I want a super smooth/hot distortion pedal for that little Marshall. Great video as always.
Sounds killer!! Love that Washburn to the right!!
Thanks man! Appreciate it! Love the N4 too 😊 Great guitar! Here's the build video if you wanna check it out -ruclips.net/video/dvakBaVbopE/видео.html - Have an awesome day!
We all need a Jay in our lives, apparently a Stephen too.
You did a phenomenal job building the amplifier and it's sounds amazing. 👌🤘
Thanks Dan - very much appreciated 🙏 Love this amp -its been awesome building it and playing it. Have an awesome day.
I built the same kit from Modulus and I got positive feedback as well, so I had to invert the connection of the output transformer cables to the power tubes. It’s a mistake in Modulus’ layout, they definitely should fix it...
I didn't know you knew about The Guitologist as well! Love that channel too!
It must really be a joy to build an amp from scratch to the end, or also in your case a guitar !!! Being able to plug it in and see and hear the end result is a real gratification! I have to start by learning how to solder with tin first and then something simpler 😜😜. Congratulations, because it sounds incredible and I did not expect less from you !!! 🥇👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🍻
Thanks Jordi! Love love love this amp! Sounds so so good 😊 🤘 🙏 Have an amazing day!
Yes Jay, whether an early plexi or later JCM800, the second 12AX7 (ECC-83 in Europe) is both a gain stage AND a cathode-follower (which drives the Bass, Middle, and Treble controls).
Epic !
Looks good. I would’ve went black on the case, but love the black metal net on the front. 🤘🏼
Just received a Mojotone's 800. Preparing myself for the build, can't wait! I had a real 800 in the 80's and like an idiot, I sold it.
Very very cool! Enjoy building it! I love my Plexi! Its a beast and a half and I'm sure your 800 will be as well! I'm gearing up for my next build in the next few days - Headfirst Wizard MCII - 4 channel amp! Its gonna be a little complex but a lot of fun and it'll be an incredible amp for sure 😊 Have an awesome day!
AWESOME!!!!
I see you're also handy with wood building. I'm also getting my hands dirty with wood building. I'm also planning on doing my own encloser. But first finishing my other projects.... DIY attenuator and a double-cut tele. Enjoy your next project. @@jayguitar
Jay, super sounding amp!! Its awesome to hear you play this. The logo on the front of the amp should be JLP69 - Jay 'Lynch' Parmer! When you start playing like George, my ears light up. So tasty and exotic. By the way, my initials are JLP and I love George Lynch too :) I bet George would really dig this amp.
What a great video ! Thanks for sharing , cheers from Quebec !
Thanks and really glad you enjoyed it 😊 Have an awesome day.
@@jayguitar You too ! 😉
Excelent video. You are very kind and helpful. Thank you.
Much appreciated Andy. Have an awesome day man!
@@jayguitar My kit arrived today so I will be soldering soon. I didn't realise the only instructions were the PDF layout diagram. Not a problem and made a lot easier having watched your video. Thank you. I will let you know how I get on.
Now i want to build one someday….
A SLO clone would be great ;)
I would too build one but my OCDs wouldn't let me... In my humble opion a late 60s 100 watt super lead is the best sounded Amp ever made. Your amp looks killer dude Awesome job bro..
Thanks Sam. Its become my favourite amp right now! Amazing tones every time 😊 Have an amazing day!
That came out so well, what a nice job! There's nothing left to be desired with that tone. I love Marshall amps and own four. A js jvm, a 2203x, 1959hw and the latest, a mint 1990 2210. I've had jubilees and a 30th anniversary and an old super bass but have narrowed it down to these four. I think I'm set now. But would love to play that beauty. Again, super job
Thanks Eric. Really appreciate it. Its an awesome amp - love this amp! Ah cool collections of amps that you have going on! I think a 2204 is another amp that I will likely build later this year or next year (next one is a Headfirst MCII build). Have an awesome day!
@@jayguitar you're very talented. Enjoy!
You should be very proud of that great work. I love the butterfly idea to make necessary tube replacement or future repairs. My only problem with this amp is...its not mine...haha
Definitely am - I soooooooo love this amp! The tone and punch and just insanely good! 😊 Have an amazing day!
1:19:03 furniture builder advice: when you have a base platform like in that cabinet, which will also be subjected to forces (the weight of the amp in this case; it could be the weight of the furniture itself if it were a shelf or something similar) don't put the screws on the edge/end grain of the piece, it's the simplest way in which it can break (it's weakening the resistance of the wood, it only holds "half" the piece) In that case it would be much safer to put the screws from below (perpendicular to the horizontal), or have the hook of that latch secure the entire piece, from below, and not just from the middle of the edge section (the whole weight of the amp will be supported only by half the thickness of that board)
Beautiful amp ! congrats!
Thank you so much for the tips about the cabinet! I really appreciate it. I had not thought about that! It’s been fine so far, and the amp doesn’t get moved around too much, but the amp is heavy and I see your point about the stress/weak point. Have an amazing day and thanks! 🙏🏽
The brown sound came from running the 100 watt amp at 70 watts with a variac. Michael Soldano was given Eddie's Plexi to service when Eddie bought his first 2 Soldano amps. In a interview about this Michael got the amo to his shop and started working on it and he said it was bone stock and when he spoke to Eddie about it and was told that he ran the amp at 140 Vax. Michael said he knew that was wrong if you fired that amp up at 140vac it would have blown the CAPS. So he said once he got the amp service and back together he started with the variac and begun dial down the power and he said it was like magic right at 70 watts the amp became more compressed and the brown sound was there. Afterwords he thought that Eddie had some new 1987 plexis which were wire for 220 and it was those amps that he was taking down to 140. If you ever have chance use a variac with that head and dial it down to 35 watts and you will get that sound out of your head.
Sounds great, where can I find the layout to the modifications you did
🔥🤘🏼🔥
It will get plenty of air to keep cool while those tubes are screaming hot.
What is your favorite bright cap? and why? Thanks! Love your channel
Really good Q! I have a 4700pf (4.7nf) in there right now and it is hardwired - it does the proper plexi thing as its the stock value for the bright cab, makes the amp pretty aggressive and punchy. I have mod planned for the amp though so want to add the bright cap on a switch and have 2 values - the stock 4700pf and either I'll experiment with the second value - between 100pf and 1000pf - to find out which I like as an alternative so I have some variations I can play with. I like the 4700 though. Sounds good in my amp 😊 It'll be an interesting experiment! Have an awesome day!
GREAT JOB! What kind of head grill is it?
Thanks! I appreciate it. Its essentially a car grill 😊 Have an awesome day.
What going on with the red indicator light going bright and dark. Sounds awesome
Hey dude, I wondered about that too - just turned out to be the camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, etc) - they were picking up the flickering of the lamp. Freaked me out initially and then realised it was just the camera - phew! Have an awesome day 😊
Wish I had the money to build one 😔
Thank you Jay. I am continuing with my small box build this evening. Some helpful info here thank you. I am surprised there isn't more info from Modulus. All I have is the colour diagram you have which has errors you have pointed out. Can I ask where you got the other diagram which has a different input config / wiring. A few of my mains transformer wires are a different colour to the diagram and again no help from Modulus. I think I have worked out what is what but there are some unexplained wires on the colour diagram which I do not have. I have a Variac which I might use when the time comes. All the best.
Hey Andy, very cool. I would love to see your amp when its done. The other diagram my friend Stefan sent to me - I have it somewhere but have just switched computers so don't know where it is right now. Yeah there are some minor errors on the modulus diagram - I used different transformers (from Italy) so worked out the wiring also 😊 Its a great amp - love love love the tone! Excellent about the variac too! That will bring the amp into Brown Sound territory. Have an awesome day!
@@jayguitar I did get help from Modulus, I was going about it the wrong way. They prefer to use Messenger which is probably faster than email. Such a great sounding amp. Highly recommend it. All sorted now but thanks.
@@andyracksthecams excellent! Glad they were able to help with it.
DO NOT!! twist your wires or braid them EVAH!! but your Amp build is great, and the music was not to bad. worked out great. loved the sound. thats quite a bit of work ya did, and quite the project, really great video, loved all the work ya did and explaining and making it seem so simple.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Curious to know why you feel that wires should never be twisted? Its very established knowledge in amp building that twisting the heater wires reduces the chances of hum being introduced into the amp's tone. Amp builders have been doing it for decades and for good reason too. You can run straight wires if you're using elevated heaters running at 12v DC to the preamp tubes, like in a Soldano Amp (which I have built too), but for a Marshall style amp where the heaters are at 6.3v the twisting helps to reduce/avoid noise and hum issues. Anyways, have a great day.
@@jayguitar because anytime you twist wired you're causing a resistance in the flow of electricity, which creates a higher amp draw for a poor flow of electricity and overheating issues and a heavier workload on whatever is drawing the amperage. Therefore more overheating and therefore shorter lifespan if I was to build an amp, I would put in a copper plated Shield inside of the wall of some sort or some kind of radio frequency barrier and then I would also Shield my wires to reduce the noise kind of like heat shrink. But I'm sure if I remember right I used to see those braided type sleeves that they would put over wires for that purpose and for heat shielding. But yeah it was quite extensive as to what you did but you made it seem really simple and good which I really enjoyed watching your video
Ah that’s really interesting info and I appreciate you sharing it with me. Thanks. I really appreciate it and I’m glad you enjoyed the video too.
@@jayguitar you're welcome I do electrical work and I've been to electrical School
Your first kit?? Good job, not surprized you had some sticky issues. Marshall amps are complex builds. I'm into fenders more .
hello cool! i don't know english well. what speaker is used in the cabinet?
Hey Alex, the speaker is a 1978 Celestion G12-80 speaker 😊 Its pretty awesome sounding. Have an amazing day dude 😊
Hi Jay, what value caps did you use or the EVH mod and the tone stack mod and how did you connect those?
Hey dude, I used a three way switch and added a 33uf electrolytic on one side and a 22uf on the other side (middle being both bypassed) fo the EVH mod. Hope that helps! Have an amazing day!
@@jayguitar That's amazing thanks for that! And I'm guessing for the tone stack three way switch you had to parallel what is normally the 33k and 500p in a super lead? Maybe put down a larger resistor and smaller cap on the board and then switched in a second resistor and cap in parallel with those? What values here?
@@steakncheddar Yes thats correct - my friend Stefan had sent me a schematic of the values which I will try and find and share with you. Can't recall the values off the top of my head.
hey dude, here’s the tone stack mod - you can download the image from my google drive. enjoy! drive.google.com/file/d/1XhvIq056WlvQXII4405aMsgNi-HG3ZLI/view?usp=drivesdk
hey man real cool vid, i think i will do a similar build, starting with the JMP 69 modulus kit and mod form there. How are you getting on with the amp any advise? Also which transformers did you use? thanks all the best!
Thanks James! Totally ADORE the amp! I have been using it a lot. It is so good! Just used it on the latest video (Frankenstrat build) for Van Halen tone and it was a super star. The transformers came from InMadOut in Italy. Found them on eBay - they don't seem to have much presence there any longer though which is unfortunate as the transformers are amazing. Have an awesome day!
@@jayguitar cool mate, thanks for the info, will do a build next month, will keep you posted on progress! Keep smiling::)
@@jamesturner811 Please do let me know! Look forward to hearing about it!
hey man i rarely if ever leave comments ill hit like cause people ask you to but i really like the way you did this whole thing from beginning to end a lot and a little selfish thing here to not gonna lie i got a question also did i hear you say you did a transformer upgrade and if so what to and why and you very well may have already said theres just always so much going on around here that my vidio watching takes second place you know anyway hope to catch your answer here and the reason why is because i had a crate blue voo doo and they claim 120 watts out of the same exact tubes everyone else claim 100 watts out of and i believe it too because that thing was loud and had huge transformers wish i had never sold it well ok hope to get an answer thanks
Hey Steev, thanks man! I appreciate that 😊 Yes I used transformers from an Italian company called InMadOut Transformers. They used to have a presence on RUclips but have kinda disappeared lately which is a shame because the transformers are fantastic. They might still have a few sets of Soldano SLO spec transformers which may work for you. Worth checking eBay 😊 Hope that helps 😊 🤘 🙏 Have an awesome day!
Awesome job. Got a question about the Miyagi switch. Is this a common Marshall mod? I did a quick Google search and did not find any info on this. I'm going to be building a 2204 amp and planning the mods. Which mini toggle switches do you use? I was looking at some Miniature Toggle Switch 6A 125V AC. I assume they should be ok. Any difference between the 2 pin or 3 pin switches? Thanks.
Hey Craig, its a very easy mod - I don't know how common it is but basically it ties the cathodes of tube 1 together. It is sometimes referred to as the 'One Wire' mod. Yes that switch sounds fine. two pin or 3 pin is fine - just make sure that it is an on-off switch rather then on-off-on which 3 pin switches can be 😊 Have an awesome day!
@@jayguitar Thanks Jay. I had been looking on Amazon for switches but were reading some reviews how the case was melting. I did previously buy some E-Switch 3 pin On-Off-On switches (100SP1T1B1M1QEH) that could probably work. But can you recommend some 2 pin On-Off switches of good quality for amp building?
@@craigyoung4068 something like these would work - amzn.to/3BugwQi - mini toggle, on-off. I usually have a supply of these and DPDT switches around 😊
Jay, which transformers did you use?
Hey dude, I bought them from InMadOut Transformers in Italy - via their eBay store. They had a set for a 50 watt Marshall at that time so I snapped them up 😊 Have an awesome day.
Get a Les Paul and plug in . Plexi and Les Paul gave rock it's balls.
Yes definitely! Excellent combo. Have an amazing day!
evh used 100w
Yeah man,, Leo Fender was famous for substituting what ever was in the bins!
But it ain't PURPLE!
Ha! I did contemplate that.... and there is a hidden touch of Purple on the amp 😉 Have an awesome day!
Thats what you want to hear from a builder, "im not a tech" ha ha, 😢
Haha! Well, at that time I was still learning - first full build that I did. I have picked up a lot since building this one 😊 Still my favourite amp in the studio! Have an awesome day!
