Good job. The "shutter" on the door lock is a dust cover. The "arm" on the door lock is the tailpiece. Back before transponders in the 80's and 90's I had keying kits for almost every make on the road. Things have gotten so much more complex we don't do any mechanical lock work any more. We now just make lost keys and lockouts.
It was a crazy summer for kia and hyundai owners, i worked on 63 vehicles this year. From rekeying ignition cylinders to removing air bag, steering wheel, lock housing. Insurance companies were not having a field day.
How do those hollow plastic part of the key last vs one that glued together and feels solid? Edit, I scrolled down a bit and got my answer of how weaker they are vs a solid plastic handle of those keys
Eric, I am a tech that also works with locks. Most techs won’t even mess with a rekey job like that. It’s a mechanical device like the rest of the car they are working on so why not??? Peace
Did the van already have remote and the owner want a replacement? or did the van not have remote and you created one? If you created one that previously did not exist, can you explain/video that process?
Did you tell the lady that America sued KIA for the problem of this car being too easy to steal and all this work was almost useless and the KIA BOYZ will be along soon to take her car with the new keys cut? OH and America is not going to share any of that money with her. So adding on a remote security system is the next step. Thank you for all the great videos and for keeping it real, cheers.
Why hasn't Kia sued RUclips & other social media platforms for promoting crime. Let them pay through costs as they knowingly committed a crime, prosecute them. Oh wait Dems are in bed with social media companies.
Kia did a poor job on car security how have a 2016 car and it not have a transponder to actually understand if it's a true key and not just cut like a door key they should be sued to the max
That new field is really not for you, because you understand nothing about that. I can say to you the real key code, because you have so nice clear picture from key. Kia, hyundai have anyway ZERO security, so your job is there pointless. Go back to old roots because it suits more for you. That key business, ehhh not for you
That was one of the top car-fixing videos I've ever seen! You either showed all the difficult aspects, or explained in sufficient detail so it was easy to reproduce. I could even modify and apply the procedure to my 2019 Kia Optima plug-in hybrid station wagon.
My 09 Elantra was previously stolen (now recovered) and I’m wondering what the best way is to go back to one key for ignition door and trunk. Today I tried swapping the tumbler from my original damaged switch to the functioning new one but had no luck. I’m thinking about doing a wafer swap tomorrow. Any suggestions?
Swapping wafers is hacky. Honestly man just buy a wafer kit and rewafer the lock. You'll get fresh wafers that will wear evenly with the new key. As an automotive who apprenticed with a locksmith this makes me cringe. For the best results you should use new wafers. Secondly those mfk shells are kinda weak in my opinion. Just stock the correct blank and you don't have the risk of the head coming off. Not trying to be a dick. I'm friends with Oz. You can ask him and he'll tell you I'm not here to troll or bully.
For other reasons we only use OEM or OEM refurbs. We will reshell a broken one though. The reason we try to use OEM is in the past we had call backs or the aftermarket cheapies won't program brand new. We charge accordingly for OEM so we aren't the cheapest but we never get call backs since we stopped using aftermarket. With reshells you still use the factory board and cut a new blade. I also never swapped wafers as I had every keying kit I could buy. New key to used wafers and old key to new wafers is looking for trouble but in a pinch if no other choice people do it. I also installed new springs but that's me. Eric is new at this but a great diag tech too. He will figure it out. I know really good locksmiths who will remove bent wafers instead of replacing them too. Not my style either but they are good at what they do except for that. :)
Maybe you missed the part about her purse being stolen. The owner was really tight on money and the parts dealer wanted $300+ for the new lock cylinders with the keys. It was also going to take 3-5 days for the parts to arrive. I did this job just to help out and she was happy with the result. The locks work great. I could understand replacing the wafers if the lock was damaged and we were repairing it, but this was not a repair and the wafers are still in good shape. Also, these MFK keys from GTL are pretty durable. I don’t use them often. I mostly use them to cut test keys, but they work great either way. I also keep transponder key shells and metal keys in my inventory along with OEM transponder keys. I’ve got quite a selection. Whatever key I choose depends on the job I’m doing. Thanks for watching!

Great content and your willingness to keep learning and adding to your arsenal of skills is on another level. Good job!
Even though I'll never do any key tumbler replacement, I did learn on how the key cylinder works.

Hey I like your videos! Keep going! I have one question, I want to buy a diagnostic device + car key programming and which one would you recommend?

Great video. The owner was wise to have the re-key done.
When did you start doing key work?
I hope things are looking up after the shop ordeal!!

Good question, what about the passenger door???

Just swap the 1, 2 cuts to the 7,8 cuts. I didn’t watch the whole video
You transitioning to full on locksmithing? No more drivability case studies?
I do both. Diagnostic and repair videos coming soon! Thanks for watching!
Isn't key transponder mandated by government since 1999?
I have a 2005 dakota and a 2006 kia sportage with a plain key.....
That's what I thought
2002 Nissan quest minivan... No transponder and I don't want it as well
wow bien video, no tenia ni idea que eso se podia hacer, gracias por tan buen video.
👍
Great video.....lots of information
Thank you for making the video I know you wasn't sure on posting it but I'm really glad you did ty
Good work.
Really great instructional video on how to do Kia ign and door lock work. Programming keys and key fobs is another video in itself.
Yeah, some models require 2 programmed keys to set extra spares to do it manually... Otherwise a programmer is needed 😢
Great job
Thanks

Great Job !!!
Without a scanner he can't do anything
?
No scanner needed for these KIA models
I don't like those transponder keys anyway
Great video very interesting of what take's place.
😊😊👍👍
