After Robert Duvall got this part nailed down and in the can in Hollywood Speak it was no longer Kilroy was here of WWII, but rather "Kilgore was here" of the Vietnam era vintage. He wasn't imbued by the character so much as he showed the character conversely being more imbued by Robert Duvall. A cinema Great IMHO. Mike Kirwan - Kenmore, WA

That scene was a fairly accurate depiction of one of the simplest operations that an Airmobile Infantry unit could possibly take part in. It was primarily the work of gunships against a known and observable static target, as opposed to an insertion from which there would be little or no ongoing support without first calling it in. Unfortunately, most of the Airmobile Infantry operations I was involved in fell into the latter category.

In Apocalypse Now Redux, there is a restored scene where they guys from the boat are stealing Kilgore's surf board, and one of the extras who is playing one of Kilgore's guys trying to keep it from getting stolen almost gets knocked into a tail rotor when the board swings into him. A very close call. I can see why there were people with bamboo sticks keeping everyone away from the tail rotors. (2:59)
